However, those with devel opmental disabilities still need help after high school. Anne Smith, the executive director of Arc Santa Rosa, Inc., said her organization provides meaningful day activities to the disabled under a mission of independence. “In the 1900s in Florida, the gold stan dard was the farm colony for feeble-minded children in Gainesville,” Smith said. Regardless of the name and how the disabled were treated a century ago, Smith said Gainesville was a long way to go for struggling families who needed help with a developmentally disabled child. Even 30 years ago, Smith said, when her son was diagnosed with autism she was told she should send him to an institution and focus on her other children. She was appalled. She then learned of Arc and they helped. Smith said she joined Arc with a birth to 3-years-old program and after the schools took it over, she joined the board of direc tors, and ve years later became the execu tive director. Smith said through teaching indepen dence skills some members can gain em ployment and even live on their own. Smith said she has a friend in the south of the state who works at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa who, like physicist Stephen Hawking, needs total care. Supported living is the program, Smith said, allowing Arc members to live on their own with help. “Some have Habitat [for Hu manity] homes, although some have had services cut,” she said. AARO RO N LITTLELITTLE | Press Gazette Jasmin Rhea, 17-year-old artist and three-year 4-H member combined her love of painting and the club’s agricultural tradition, Thursday, in a relatively new urban art form called moss grafti. Rhea said she’s never worked on an outdoor project and has only painted with acrylic on canvas until now. The biggest difference she said is waiting for it to grow. Driving down Dogwood Drive, motorists can see the progress on the fence across from the Santa Rosa Christian School entrance. Caskey said owner Sharon Carmichael, 4-H club president, will help by regularly watering the moss and covering it with a tarp to protect it from a forecasted rain. By PAMELA HOLT 623-2120| @pamelaholtpg pholt@srpressgazette.com Sandra Nicely said teachers are tired of not being able to use their creativity in the classroom and she will see to it change will happen. “It has to start with the school board,” said Nicely. She’s a candidate for SRC School Board District 1. Nicely is currently work ing as a bus driver and has for 23 years, ten years in San ta Rosa County. She said she has a heart for children and knows what’s going on within the schools. “I hear children talk about what’s happen ing in the classrooms. I help with homework. I have my nger on the pulse of the schools,” she said. By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com Two documented gang members and brothers from the Pensacola area in volved in a burglary spree, Jan. 14, from Bagdad to Navarre are both behind bars this week according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Ofce. Reports said they kicked in doors in broad daylight and stole handguns, jewelry, high end electronics, and money. According to the report, long-guns, televisions, game systems and other “normal” theft items the thieves left behind. The crimes took place in Janu ary with one brother, Jer emiah Cooler of Pensacola, arrested January 15 while his brother, Shawn Cooler, remained at large until April and was booked this week. Reports said, on sev eral different occasions, suspect descriptions de scribed young adult black males, seen by neighbors and witnesses near the crime scenes. They also reported suspects driving a dark blue Pontiac se dan, reports said. During two burglaries, one in Gulf Breeze and one in Navarre, a neighbor’s surveillance camera caught a dark blue Pontiac Grand Prix. The general consensus among investigators, according to reports, agreed a group of young black males from the Escambia County, Pensaco la area were responsible. After deputies identied Shawn Cooler and his reg istered blue Pontiac Grand Prix, they determined he had an extensive criminal history involving burglary, theft, and narcotic use, re ports said. Reports said Shawn Cooler was already on probation for burglary/ theft with a pending viola tion for a new-law violation, narcotic possession and manufacturing, and not reporting to his probation ofcer. Facebook has endured. I thought the social networking phenomenon would have slowed down after everyone got to look at that sandwich I had for lunch or the family pictures from Dollywood I posted last year. But I was wrong. Perhaps I will post pictures from my upcoming trip to EuroDollywood, which I think is in Louisiana. Facebook is more compelling than intrusive — so far. It gives everyone another chance to sleep with that person he or she knew in high school. How did we survive for so many years without it, not knowing who was feeling “truly blessed” each day, and why? But now there are revelations that Facebook has been monkeying with us. We are the monkeys in their psychological experiments (on 700,000 unwitting users) about whether positive or negative things posted on the site evoke certain emotions. Like the Edward Snowden news, the U.S. media did not nd out about these “mood manipulation” studies, nor did our government. The Financial Times in Europe broke the story. The European authorities who discovered the experiment said they could levy a ne of up to 500,000 pounds on Facebook. With a market capitalization of $170 billion, Facebook responded, “500k pounds? That’s adorable.” Privacy has somehow become an antiquated notion. Facebook and the Internet have ushered in an age George Orwell warned us of in 1984. We are willing, even anxious, to put things our parents’ generation would never tell anyone right on our Facebook page for all the world to see. Technology is marvelous, but it can be used for good or bad. Here in Florida, members of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity were busted for posting naked pictures of co-eds on Facebook. Back in my day, we had to take a Polaroid picture of our naked girls, shake it for ten seconds, then show it to our buddies one at a time. It was labor intensive. Facebook has even become an important conduit for political actions. It hastened the Arab Spring. Obama used it well to spin his weak campaign message. Liberals love Facebook; they use social media to manipulate people of unreasoned emotions to vote for Democrats. They kill the GOP in this Svengali area. I think Romney’s campaign only had a MySpace page. Occupy Wall Street protestors used free, capitalist-created Facebook, Apple iPhone apps, Google and Twitter to organize themselves against capitalism. They loitered in parks spewing their message that life is so difcult because of capitalism, and they were willing to use every free, work-saving invention it produced to prove it. The Internet has been very positive. It has opened up the world to the ow of ideas, more information, and freer markets, primarily because government has not been very involved. But one of the casualties has been personal privacy. Either we accept this, or opt out. We have a climate of unwarranted privacy invasions by our government. With the NSA spying on you, would you rather government or business have your personal information? Government will use it to tax you, harass you, destroy your reputation and send you to prison. Business will just send you coupons to buy those shoes you were looking at on Google. In reality, I am not sure how accurate the information Facebook gets really is. When someone posts that he graduated from Yale, rarely does he mention that it was a locksmith training program. A lot of deception surrounds the Internet and Facebook. We all have real friends and then we have “Facebook friends.” Post that you need a ride to the airport at rush hour and see who will drive you. Those are your real friends. Founder Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook under a cloud of deception. He settled with the Winklevoss twins by giving them 40 acres of Farmville land and a mule. He married a girl I think he stole from one of the Winklevoss brothers. He is maturing; he wears more formal hoodies now. Maybe he will rethink his legacy. To remain a viable business, he has to be trusted. MySpace blew up Friendster. Facebook killed MySpace after Zuckerberg lifted the idea from Harvard friends. Google spies on us and gives our information to the Feds. Twitter and Yik Yak trash talk users. At some point, social media needs to realize that it doesn’t grasp the concept of what a “friend” really is. Ron Hart is a syndicated op-ed humorist, author and TV/radio commentator. Page 4 RON HA rR T The Hart Beat www.srpressgazette.com Saturday, July 12, 2014 A Section O PINIo O N TT he definition of a tea partier Dear Editor, People like Joe Biden have absolutely no clue what drives a person who subscribes to the beliefs of the Tea Party movement. A small paper-back published in 2009 titled Tea Party Revival by Dr. B. Leland Baker, gives a clear and concise look at beliefs and principles that are the core of the Tea Party movement. A Tea Partier believes in: z Individual rights, personal responsibility, and integrity. z Enforcing the enumerated powers of the Constitution; z Expect the president, Congress and the Supreme Court to comply with item No. 2. Many of the administrative agencies of the Executive Branch are unconstitutional, resulting in a bloated federal tyranny. Tea Partiers believe enforcing constitutional, enumerated powers will reduce the size of that tyranny, and cost billion$ less of our tax dollars. Tea Partiers want the U. S. to get out of the U. N. and close our borders to illegal aliens. Want the courts to interpret laws, not make them. They want all elected officials to be subject to the same laws and penalties as the rest of the American citizenry. Tea Partiers are not republican or democrat. Tea Partiers are nothing more, nothing less than patriotic American citizens who want the Constitution enforced. The Tea Party is not a partisan, political party. It is a patriot movement. Dr. B. Leland Baker refers to the party as a revival of the values, principles, and laws set down by our founding fathers. Bill Bledsoe Milton Vote East Milton for courthouse Dear Editor, Concerning the new courthouse location, WEAR Channel 3 News had a great picture of the bottleneck that is caused by U.S. Highway 90 not being upgraded in Milton. But the city wants to build a new building downtown with no consideration of the roads. Just how stupid do they think the tax payers are? The best place to build is the East Milton location. We will vote and we will see if we are as dumb as the city leaders think we are. If the voters will pass a new tax to build a new court house, it will depend on the location and downtown will not be the place. Remember to vote and read the ballot very carefully. MONd D A y Y 11:46 A.m M This is Kenneth. I’m calling about our local representative. He not only does not accept any responsibility for the VA problem now he’s voted against reducing the interest on student loans. Now, in order for him to do something like this, I think the main reason would be that he is receiving substantial campaign contributions from the large banks. If anybody is familiar with student loans, they realize the students are paying excessive interest on these loans whenever they nish college. I think it’s ridiculous. You can go out and buy a car for much less and buy a house for much less interest than you can get on a student loan. It makes no sense to me except that the banks are making excessive money in this student loan asco. TuesdTUESD A y Y 8:39 A.m M This is Raymond. I wonder if you couldn’t put something in the paper for what exactly they’re going to do with the old bridge. One person told me they were going to leave it and make it a bike trail out of it, but they’re driving in pylons and it looks like they’re widening it or something. I don’t know if they’re driving the pylons for the new bridge before tearing the old one down. It would just be interesting to know what they’re doing. Thank you. I was just wondering why, when President Bush ew over New Orleans and didn’t stop, every democrat in the United States had ts because it was just so terrible. He was unconcerned and all that. And now they’ve got a catastrophe on the Mexican border, where hordes of people are coming over and the President refuses to go to look at it, but he’s got all this time in Texas to raise money, and drink beer, and play pool, but he does not go to the border. Local A6 | Santa Rosa’s Press Gazette Saturday, July 12, 2014 AARON LITTLE | Press Gazette Thursday, Arc members baked a cake for a Daniel Young and Betty May Wright, celebrating July birthdays. Cathy, (in the blue jacket next to Ann Smith in the black and white top) said she enjoys learning sign language at the Arc. “My favorite is sign language because you never know when you’ll meet a person who can’t hear,” she said ARC from page A1 Supported employment is an other independence program of fered by Arc. Smith said Arc has a job coach with resources to nd employment. Smith said Arc also has an agreement with the state to provide employees with dis abilities. She said some work at Arc in the garden center or on the litter crew. “If you want to get a job, the rst thing you need to learn is personal hygiene,” Smith said, and so Arc teaches individuals how to brush their teeth and hair and how to do nail care. They’re also given help with reading and work through an individual sup port plan. The Santa Rosa County Extension ofce helps teach cook ing and preparing food like salads and desserts. She said individuals also learn how to shop for healthy food on a budget. Household skills are another segment of abilities taught. Smith said individuals earn minimum wage pay for jobs like mopping. “We had a girl who couldn’t speak a word but she knew what money was,” Smith said, who said she made the hand motion for money. Art lessons are available for Arc members as well. “Art promotes motor skills and socialization. All activities have some kind of goal,” she said. “Ev ery Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m., a group of about 20 musicians play together. They needed space to play so they came here. “A group of that 20 will start coming Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. When someone from the community comes in or they go out, it strengthens the bond with the community. They blossom.” Despite what Arc does for members who are constantly in need, the nonprot organization operates on a minimal budget. Smith said Arc members love go ing bowling at Oops Alley, which costs $5.50 per person, but when members can’t pay, the teachers might contribute out of their own pockets. “We work like school teach ers,” she said. She also said they lost a fulltime teacher due to cuts. Arc members used to take care of Hawkins Recreational Park, dedi cated to the use of persons with disabilities, on Munson Highway just past Carpenter’s Park. “We had to stop Hawkins Park maintenance because the state wasn’t funding enough. We used to do it, 20-25 years ago.” She said somebody vandalized the outlet box, and the park had vagrancy issues. She also said Arc’s blueberry patch has relied on rain since the pump broke. “If not money, I would ask for volunteers,” Smith said. “We need help with the blueberries and volunteers in the garden shop. We need help pruning and doing clippings.” She said Arc also needs help with housekeeping, roong and carpentry and painting, hair care. “We welcome volunteers,” she said. Smith also said dental care is desperately needed. She said it was bad enough, the state of Flor ida added a line item in the bud get, but there’s only so much to go around in the whole state. “A lot [of the disabled] are not trained in dental care so a lot have bad teeth or dentures,” she said. One youngster, Smith said, who came to Arc was never given a tooth brush before. While the June Blueberry Bash gave the Arc some much needed support, Smith said they are in need of so much more. NICELY from page A1 Nicely said when she’s elected she will be in con stant contact with parents, teachers and concerned citizens. “If you don’t have a rela tionship with the people you represent, you can’t do your job correctly,” she said. Although there’s noth ing she can do about previ ous decisions made by the school board, she said one of her main concerns is ad dressing bus safety issues. “The county needs a more detailed description of what transportation rules are in the code of conduct. These are daily issues with constant change,” she said. She said she’s very con cerned about Common Core issue. “The proponents who created the system make it sound so wonderful. But teachers tell me they are restricted instead,” said Nicely. While she said the basic problems with Com mon Core are the tip of the iceberg, it is important to remember the school board is supposed to represent the people in the county. Nicely said hiring local businesses for construction projects when possible is better for county wide eco nomic growth and gives an opportunity for residents to be vested in local needs. “Sometimes the lowest bid is not the best value. Out of state contractors are not vested in our county,” she said. “I have concerns about the school system and my goal is to address all of the issues. The citizens of Santa Rosa County will know they have someone in their cor ner that cares about their children. I’m persistent and will get the job done. I’m all about what we can do to get teachers back to teaching instead of teaching a test,” she said. Nicely said she is known throughout the county as GANG from page A1 and closely associates with his brother, Jeremiah Cooler, 20, as well as others in the Escambia County area with extensive burglary, theft, and narcotic histories. The day of the burglaries, in the south end of the county, deputies located a vehicle matching the description pro vided by a witness to a bur glary in Navarre. Deputies initiated a pursuit through the National Seashores in Gulf Breeze but immediately terminated the pursuit due to heavy trafc, approaching school zones, and other un safe conditions. After judges signed war rants, deputies began to look for Shawn Cooler and his brother Jeremiah Cooler. Both were from Escambia County and were documented gang members, reports said. It was apparent they were also armed and on the run. Twenty four hours after the pursuit, deputies found Shawn and Jeremiah Cooler hidden out in room 216 at the Red Roof Inn on Plantation Road, Pensacola. Reports said witnesses reported Jer emiah Cooler quickly walked to the Wafe House next door, dropped a backpack in the dumpster and entered the restaurant. Deputies found Jeremiah and discov ered handguns, an iPad, and coins in the bag matching the Navarre burglaries and a December, Pace burglary. Several other stolen items were found in Shawn Cooler’s Pontiac as well as another handgun and over 10 grams of cocaine in the hotel room. Shawn Cooler was on the run until April, when deputies arrested him in Escambia County. Both Cooler brothers are in the in custody where they face multiple burglary charges. Escambia County is holding Jeremiah Cooler for Santa Rosa County without bond while Shawn Cooler is at Santa Rosa County jail under a $310,000 bond.

L IFESTYl L E www.srpressgazette.com Saturday, July 12, 2014 B Page 1 Section Every morning, my African Grey parrot Gizmo calls to me from his cage, beckoning me to visit with him and fill his bowl. If I ignore his calls, he will become belligerent and continue to call as he must know it’s annoying. “Mama,” he calls, his voice mimicking my daughter, Emma. I ignore him. “Mom,” he says again, this time like Kristen, my eldest child. After several tries imitating different members of the family, I’ll acquiesce and come to his cage and place dried fruit for a treat and he will calmly say, “Good night, Gizmo,” in his best voice of my husband, Dan, even though it’s 7 a.m. It is my belief my animals know what’s going on and they decide when to behave and when to rebel against their owner’s wishes. They do their best to communicate their needs, even if it seems a bit childish. Conversations with Gizmo always are mystifying. Anyone could be in the midst of a serious conversation in our home and he will add monosyllables at just the right time. For instance, be in a conversation about someone being sick and end the paragraph with “I hope she’s better soon,” and he will say in a female voice, “awww.” If it’s just a typical question someone is asking in the kitchen he will be very agreeable and say, “OK”to whatever is being asked. Hopefully no one is asking for money especially if you have walked out of the room and he answers in your place in your own voice. And the best part yet is if a cellphone is ringing, he will say hello and tell his imagined caller, “He’s not here. OK, ’bye,” although he won’t take a message. Gizmo went through a very difficult transition recently and let us all know he was not pleased with mom going back to work. When I went back to work and he was home throughout the day alone, he began pulling feathers to show his displeasure. With diligence I sprang to action, working hard to find a way to ease his troubled heart. I moved him to a window in the sewing room, just off the kitchen. I purchased a new cage and gave him new toys. We began having longer conversations, discussing the importance of freshly ironed clothing and how tasty dried bananas could be. He’s stopped pulling his feathers and now calls to me in the mornings incessantly. He’s God’s creature with a very intelligent mind and it needs to be challenged. He has destroyed the new toys and believed me enough to try dried bananas but has yet to pick up the iron. PAMELA HOLT Keeping It Simple STILL ON TRACK By AARON LITTLE 623-2120 alittle@srpressgazette.com Away from the crowd of fans, the echoing announcer and rev ving engines, the smell of tires and fuel, down a dirt road surrounded by trees and only a few neighbors lives a racing veteran, Wayne Nie decken Jr. Many racing fans know him as “Junior” not just because he shares his father’s name, but because he shares his father’s passion for racing. Wayne Niedecken Sr. began racing in 1949. Between 1949 and 1964, when he moved to Pensac ola, Niedecken Sr. raced and con sistently won in Texas and Okla homa, as well as races in Shreve port, Memphis, Ascot Park, Calif., and Knoxville, Iowa. After moving to Pensacola, Niedecken Sr. also won the Fiesta 200 at Five Flags Speedway and other titles there. Notable among his wins were the rst and third Snowball Derby. Niedecken Jr.’s record stands for itself, including a combined 10 track championships at Five Flags, Mobile International, and Jackson International Speed way, spanning 35 years of racing. Niedecken Jr. also was the rst consecutive two-time NASCAR Grand American National Cham pion in 1980 and 1981. Niedecken Jr. also has re ceived the “most popular driver” award numerous times, just as his father won “Best Sportsman” by his fellow drivers. “You have to be a clean driver. I try to keep a good reputation,” Niedecken said. “You can’t let people drive your car. Patience and concentration are the two keys. You can’t let people get in your head,” he said. All of this, he does while “shoestring racing.” He said, “We look at pennies hard. We try to race and at least break even. The purses pay to upgrade and maintain the car.” All around, racing is an expen sive endeavor. Three sponsors Niedecken said back his career are Lou Sabh’s Milton Chevrolet, Lifeguard Ambulance Service, Kool Karts and Kool Graphics. Other sponsors readers can nd listed at www.niedeckenracing. com. “Money buys speed,” Nie decken said. He still has two spots on his Pro Late Model for sponsorship, the prime spot being the hood. Although Niedecken said he has no desire to retire, he said he would like to focus on driver devel opment to bring in new blood. One of the last drivers he mentored, he said, was Hal Martin, the Pro Late Model division winner at the Mobile International Speedway in ’07, who’s also raced at Daytona International Speedway and Tal ladega Superspeedway. “They need to be condent,” Niedecken said of new drivers. “At Five Flags, you need condence to run up to the wall and not wor ry about it. You can’t be fearful of it.” He also said he wants a driver to be comfortable and consistent. “The smoothest is the fastest,” he said. Like any teacher, he said, “I want someone who listens well, will apply lessons, and has good feedback.” Niedecken said a new driver must have resources to get whatever equipment he needs. “You always need to control your destiny, which means being self sufcient,” he said. A new rac er, he said, would probably come from go-kart or bandolero racing. So, he said, “The biggest thing is getting used to the weight.” He also said drivers coming from those smaller, more similar cars tend to bump each other on the track. Wanting to train a clean driver, he said those bad habits would have to go. Niedecken said he would like to run some venues he’s run be fore while he’s still aggressive and competitive and with no med ical issues. “When I can’t, I’ll either sell the business or nd a driver with some money.” The next challenges ahead for Niedecken Racing are an August 9 Pro Late Model 20/30 at Mobile International Speed way, the Lee Field Memorial 100 lap later in August, and a return to Pensacola in September for the 100 lap Night of Champions. “We’re looking to win,” he said. “We’ve done our home work. We’ll upgrade all we can and go with the best possible set up.” Junior Niedecken says no to retirement Junior Niedecken said racers tend to get their start in go-kart or bandolero racing. The problem, he said, is go-kart racing tends to have a lot of bumping, a habit he doesn’t like to see transferred to full-sized racing. Niedecken said the car is designed around the driver, so no matter if he or she is a full-sized adult or young teen early in a career, the cockpit will be snug. Niedecken Jr. might have a legendary father, but his own 35-year career is dotted with wins and high placements, with a second place and two seventh place nishes this season at Five Flags Speedway. Niedecken said his father, Wayne Niedecken Sr., taught him everything about building a race car. Niedecken said for 13 years, up until the 1980s, nobody had a radio while driving. Your legacy is missing from the alumni banner display represent ing each class of Panther graduates. When the 2014-2015 school year resumes, the Milton High School Senior Class will be ready to leave their academic and athletic memoirs on their school campus along with a pictur esque tribute of the year of their graduation. The Class of 2015 banner is prepared and currently suspended in a distinguished location of the cafeteria of Milton High School alone. In May at the senior break fast, the seniors will follow the tradition of moving their specially designed banner to the alumni exhibition. “Graduates of Milton en joy visiting the campus and viewing their class banner,” Debby Shepper, MHS fac ulty member said. “They may be on campus for their grandchild’s football camp and stop in for a moment to reminiscence.” “We are proud of the way it has come together,” she said. “We hope that our alumni may incorporate the cafeteria into their reunions and or that end of the year banquets may host their events here.” However, seven class banners are missing from the chronologically designed display. Each class that has previously graduated has purchased the banner rep resentating their graduation year themselves. The ban ners are designed and made locally at Sign Crafters and average about $100.00 to purchase. The classes of 1985, 1988, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 are not represented.
