By LYNNE HOUGH623-3616 lhough@srpressgazette.com An Allentown man who left 18 years ago to join the military is back and leaving an impression on those who meet him. Ray Stetler, 37, lives in a house on land that has been in his family for generations. His grandpa, James Roy Dooley, bought the land the 1940s, near Central High School, where Stetler attended. After serving one year in the Army and 17 years in the Air Force, he is home, having received a medical retirement for two incidents of serious injuries incurred in the line of duty. Once describing himself as good at xing things, Stetler has been busy since his return in November, helping family and working on his hobby one he hopes to turn into a business. I didnt expect this kind of response, but it looks like my hobby is going to be my job, he shared. His job in the Air Force was communications all kinds: land; mobile; radar tracking; voice systems; encrypted voice; cable and antenna. If it allows somebody to talk to somebody else, Ive done it, he said. Ive been trained for ber optics for telephones, encrypted communications. I designed a communications system involving drones, he said. Thats where his hobby comes in. Stetler builds Y copters or tricopters from scratch. Each is a remote-controlled drone and his has a high-de nition camera mounted on top. Hes been out around Milton and Pace demonstrating for people what he is able to do with the device. Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Donna Tucker met with Stetler Wednesdays. She said, Talking to him there are so many possible applications that went through my head in 15 minutes. The Blackwater Pyrates are talking about working with him to videotape the Mardi Gras Parade. She added, On the July 4 Riverfest, people estimate that 40,000 to 50,000 people come to watch the reworks. We are going to have him run up and down the river dur-By PAMELA HOLT623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com The story of the late Kendra Fendt, a Pace woman who died this month from complications of the u and pneumonia just after giving birth to her daughter, caught the heart of a senior at Navarre High School, SGA President McKinney Ferland. The student said she heard the story from the SGA sponsor, Jenna Hughes, who knows the family through her family and church. Ferland began following a Facebook page Fendts father posted, updated daily on the womans progress. When I read how sick she became and so fast, I remembered my mom being sick when she was pregnant with my last sister. It was scary. And when I read her fathers posts about baby Meredith, I was so sad, said Ferland. She said she was concerned about the familys nances when she thought about her husband being at the hospital in Alabama. I thought hes going to need help in paying the mortgage and with all of the new expenses, she said. She has created a power point presentation to present to the student body and named her SGA project, Memories for Meredith, plus a diaper and formula drive begins next week. These efforts will culminate Friday with a fundraising event involving the student body called 1000 in 1. In one minute every classroom will give whatever monies they can to raise $1,000, said Hughes. She explains someone over the intercom will say go and everyone will empty their pockets. Hughes said shes very proud of Ferland as she has much responsibility as being the treasurer of the student body, but is still taking the initiative in helping this family. Ferland said its all for baby Meredith.AERIAL PHOTO BY RAY STETLER | Special to the Press GazetteRay Stetler, tech Sgt. retired U.S. Air Force, is getting a lot of attention this week by demonstrating his handiwork to area businesses, government agencies, and, well, the Press Gazette. According to Santa Rosa County Commissioner Bob Cole, who was able to take the bull by the horns and get the boat removed from both the sound and vandals, said it has been a long process to get the job done. Its out of the water now and no longer a public nuisance, he said. The vessel was taken at the expense of the owner on Thursday to Pensacola Shipyard to stay until disposal, which is the total expense of the owner. Keith Bell ower, general manager of the shipyard said the business is happy to help out, being the story is all too familiar, going back to Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Storms since then have devastated the water front and took a toll on many vessels. Whats happened in the past, people see a 30 ft. sailboat at auction, damaged by storms going for a great price and they make the purchase and dont realize the cost of what it takes to get it back to shipshape. He said hes seen several boats be anchored in Bayou Chico, abandoned, becoming navigational hazards. Cole said during the two years the boat was abandoned, it was sunk and raised several times and caused problems for many. Its just not safe for the people, he said. Avalon and Sims Middle Schools along with Bennett Russell, Berryhill, East Milton Elementary and S.S. Dixon Intermediate schools held drives to collect health and comfort and make Christmas and Hanukah cards items for hospitalized veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital in Biloxi, Miss. Many of the Veterans are from Northwest Florida and south Alabama but the facility is the closest available hospital. The collected articles were placed in Christmas Stockings, made by the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 78. Members of Legion Post 78 and Unit 78 presented almost 200 patients with Christmas or Holiday stockings in December during a visit to the hospital. Most people dont realize the curative effect that actions like this can have on hospitalized veterans, said Ray Goodwin, commander of Post 78, American Legion in Milton. After a long stay in a hospital, especially for injuries incurred while serving in the military a person has a tendency to wonder if anyone really cares. When they are away from friends and family it magnies the feelings and depression. An act of kindness, such as simply providing a small bottle of shampoo can brighten the day of a wounded warrior to a point that unless you have walked in those boots, you couldnt possibly understand. On behalf of American Legion Post and Unit 78, and especially all of the hospitalized veterans you were able to provide health and comfort to, we truly thank God for you and appreciate all you have done for our veterans. The Motto of the American Legion is For God and Country. Post 78 in Milton was chartered in 1919 and I dont think there is a post anywhere that can say they have more community recognition or support for that motto than here in Santa Rosa County.Legion Post 78 says thank youMy mind has wandered to spring lately. Perhaps its the cold and damp seeping into my bones making me think warmer thoughts. Recently, Ive revealed my love for farm and family and Ive received positive feedback from my dear readers. Today, I will reveal a bit more of myself in the fact I love my clothesline. No joke. I love everything about my clothesline. My dear daddy built it out of steel. My daddy can do anything. He was a steelworker and built it for my mother years ago when they lived on my great grandmothers homestead in a little community called Adger, Alabama. He welded the large pipes together and cemented it in the ground. When they moved from the old farmhouse, I inherited his handy work and I watched as he and my husband worked to set it up for my use. It isnt prominently displayed in my yard, (its out by the chicken pen), but I love walking out there during the spring and hanging out my wash the same way women for centuries have before me. Its a very green thing to do. It saves electricity which equals saving money, its healthier for each item of clothing not to be in the dryer, and the clothes smell fresh. Its not just for those reasons I hang my laundry. The clothesline reminds me of how very dear my family is to me as I hang each and every item in a load of laundry. It has witnessed, throughout the years, the growth of my family from diapers to blue jeans and the arrival of my granddaughter when I painstakingly hung her freshly laundered cotton diapers just as I did for my own. Oh, you say, she is so very old fashioned and maybe even simple minded. Indeed. Perhaps I am. But in my own defense, its putting my hands to work and serve which makes me thrive. I think of my mother washing our diapers and hanging them to dry and my grandmother and even my great grandmothers who would hang their kitchen towels and scrub their familys laundry by hand, in the midst of winter even, without the convenience of a front loading washer. Thinking about the time it took to make sure their family not only had clean clothes to wear, but prepared healthy food to consume and served on a beautifully embroidered table cloth which she, herself, created. And washed and spilled jam on, which she made, possibly with strawberries from her garden. Indeed. Serving my family makes me smile, just as reporting the news in my home county puts me in the mindset of doing my very best. For you, dear readers.Clotheslines, past and present PAmeMELA HOLt TKeeping It Simple David Scott Kyer, 72, of Toledo, slipped his earthly bonds to join the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Joyce Goldenberg Hospice in Pensacola, Fla. This enabled the school to be eligible for a literacy grant funded by the Dugas Family Foundation. The donation from the Dugas Family Foundation supports literacy and places books in the hands of students across the Santa Rosa School District. As a result of this generous donation more than 9,500 books were placed into the hands of local students. Each school media center was given the option to use the endowment to provide a book $5 or under to each elementary student attending the book fair through the All for Books program. Additional options were to use the funds to purchase books from the fair for classroom libraries; or to buy needed books from the fair for their media centers. Through the All for Books program, Scholastic matches donated books, up to a million books a year, so thousands of children across the United States will receive books through Kids in Distressed Situations and Kids in Need Foundation as a result of this program. The Book Fair is a vital fundraiser for our schools, but this partnership is doing much more than just raising money for our libraries, this donation has allowed us to work on raising a generation of readers by giving kids: Access to a large selection of books for a wide range of interests and reading levels. Choice: Students will read more when they have a choice in what they read. Choice leads to motivation, which leads to increased voluntary reading. Involvement: Families that demonstrate interest in books and reading help students form lifelong reading habits. Reading Practice: When students are enthusiastic about what they read, they get more practice and become better readers and learners. This family gives generously throughout the Florida panhandle to support many worthy causes. They are huge supporters of literacy and feel strongly that encouraging a child to read for pleasure can enhance their lives. Our partnership will encourage kids to read every day and lead a better life. Democrats plan to demagogue income inequality and the wealth gap for political gain in this years elections. Most of whats said about income inequality is stupid or, at best, ill-informed. Much to their disgrace, economists focusing on measures of income inequality bring little light to the issue. Lets look at it. Income is a result of something. As such, results alone cannot establish whether there is fairness or justice. Take a simple example to make the point. Suppose Tom, Dick and Harry play a weekly game of poker. The result is Tom wins 75 percent of the time. Dick and Harry, respectively, win 15 percent and 10 percent of the time. Knowing only the games result permits us to say absolutely nothing as to whether there has been poker fairness or justice. Toms disproportionate winnings are consistent with his being either an astute player or a clever cheater. To determine whether there has been poker justice, the games process must be examined. Process questions we might ask are: Were Hoyles rules obeyed; were the cards unmarked; were the cards dealt from the top of the deck; and did the players play voluntarily? If these questions yield af rmative answers, there was poker fairness and justice, regardless of the games result, even with Toms winning 75 percent of the time. Similarly, income is a result of something. In a free society, for the most part, income is a result of ones capacity to serve his fellow man and the value his fellow man places on that service. Say I mow your lawn and you pay me $50. That $50 might be seen as a certi cate of performance. Why? It serves as evidence that I served my fellow man and enables me to make a claim on what he produces when I visit the grocer. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page are multibillionaires. Just as in the case of my serving my fellow man by mowing his lawn, they served their fellow man. The difference is they served many more of their fellow men and did so far more effectively than I and hence have received many more certi cates of performance, which enables them to make greater claims on what their fellow man produces, such as big houses, cars and jets. Brin and Page and people like them created wealth by producing services that improve the lives of millions upon millions of people all around the globe. Should people who have improved our lives be held up to ridicule and scorn because they have higher income than most of us? Should Congress con scate part of their wealth in the name of fairness and income redistribution? Except in many instances when government rigs the game with crony capitalism, income is mostly a result of ones productivity and the value that people place on that productivity. Far more important than income inequality is productivity inequality. That suggests that if theres anything to be done about income inequality, we should focus on how to give people greater capacity to serve their fellow man, namely raise their productivity. To accomplish that goal, lets look at a few things that we shouldnt do. Becoming a taxicab owneroperator lies within the grasp of many, but in New York City, one must be able to get a license (medallion), which costs $700,000. There are hundreds of examples of government restrictions that reduce opportunity. What about the grossly fraudulent education received by so many minority youngsters? And then we handicap them further with laws that mandate that businesses pay them wages that exceed their productivity, which denies them on-thejob training. Think back to my poker example. If one is concerned about the games result, which is more just, taking some of Toms winnings and redistributing them to Dick and Harry or teaching Dick and Harry how to play better? If left to politicians, theyd prefer redistribution. That way, they could get their hands on some of Toms winnings. Thats far more rewarding to them than raising Dicks and Harrys productivity. It seems Gov. Scott and his commonly coreless regime has issued the same message: If you like your school, you can keep it. That is all his recent publicity/ campaign message amounts to. First, he was for Common Core (CC). He even placed Bennett in as DOE chief, after Mr. Bennett was red from his Indiana post primarily because he was a staunch supporter of Common Core, and the people of Indiana have been ghting it. Then, Scotts fair-haired boy abruptly left the Florida post for unsavory reasons and later cleared by his cronies in Indiana. After major opposition to CC in Florida, it appears he got the message that to be re-elected, he will have to try and placate the voters. Hence his latest attempt to fool the gullible public into believing he is going to x CC to their satisfaction. One argument is against the testing/assessment process. Just get rid of PARC and all is well. Not so. The real problem with CC is not the test, but the curricula content. Play with the testing but it will not change the globalist indoctrination coming down the pike. (Building Cultural Bridges, Sexuality Standards for K-12, and the controlled-by-D.C. common core Search Engine.) I will always believe that American voters must demand Congress get rid of the Federal Department of Education. It is unconstitutional. Ive been waiting some 40 years for someone to show me the Constitutional authority for the feds to run education. Bill Bledsoe By BARBARA NORRISSpecial to the Press Gazette He marked off the day and placed the calendar safely back inside the foot locker. Before closing the lid, he blew a kiss to each of the smiling faces looking up at him. There was Mom, or Patty-Pat as she was called; his Dad, the best father a son could have; and of course, there was LittleSis, his baby sister. He was so proud of her; she was now a freshman at the local college. He took a moment to kiss his ngers ... and as gently and as lovingly as could be, he placed them on the smiling lips of Betty, his soon-to-be wife. He almost laughed out loud with glee ... the wedding was now fully planned, and in one more week he would be going home! As he knew from experience and training, instincts take over at a time like this. He knew that as their Humvee left the compound, a fear for comrades and self become part of the sensation of not knowing when, what, where or with whom an engagement would occur. Training! Alert! Ready! Response! Action! Conditions! Time! Luck! All were small words, but all were words of great importance. These were words that make a difference ... the difference when going home! His squad was ready! Ready with the provisions issued to them. He was proud of his team, for they were alert, on guard and ready for whatever was awaiting them out there. With the rst incoming raf e shot, they all responded with the actions of well-trained ghting men. He did not hear that nal shot. To his amazement, he felt himself lifting and oating above the bodies of his fallen comrades. Looking around and through the dusty smoke of the ambush sight, he realized they had arrived there at the wrong time. It was then he also realized that another of the words had abandoned them Luck! Luck was the one word he and his comrades could not be trained for, and he knew you were on your own when it came to luck! He knew their numbers had run out! Luck had deserted them. Luck no longer rode with him or with his men! Luck was busy elsewhere! Before long, he and his buddies were zipped inside body bags and own to Frankfurt, Germany; there they were prepared for the long ight home. His soul was saddened in hearing the fears his fallen comrades had about going home under these conditions. These fears being the loss of love, family, a long fruitful life and all those unlived dreams tore at his soul. All this, and much more, was lost! Hearing all that sadness over their loss of life brought more tears to his soul. Then, as the faces of Patty-Pat, Dad and LittleSis oated by, his soul ached to its depth for the pain they were going through. However, it was the harrow and pain he saw on Bettys face that made him scream ... Why? Why is this happening to us? There was only silence! Hovering above, there in the church, he saw Dad, Mom, Betty and Little-Sis walking down the aisle. He saw them sitting down. Then he saw Mom rst pattypat Dads knee and then Bettys. This small jester made his soul smile, for whenever she was happy or sad; Mom would always give you a patty-pat. Once again, extreme sadness lled his soul. Had had told Betty a long time ago, that should they have a little daughter; he wanted her to also be called Patty-Pat. Sadly, this was not to be! Everyone in the church and even those outand-about town knew this was the day he was to walk down the aisle in his dress uniform, take his Bettys hand and together they would begin a new chapter in their young lives. Today was supposed to be their wedding day! Laying there, straightand-proud-as-could-be in his dress uniform, he was dressed-to-the-nines as Patty-Pat always said when he went out on a date. Lying there, he saw family, friends and colleagues march by! He saw their fears! He saw their tears! He saw the salutes! It was then his soul again shouted. Why? Why Dear Lord? Dear Lord above, why? Ever so softly, so softly that he wasnt sure he heard correctly came the reply. Politics. Like us on SANTA ROSA PRESS GAZETTEChristian love is not bigotryDear editor, Mandela believed in God, was not a Christian per his con dante. Surprisingly, admirably Mandela forgave his jailer. So did Corrie Ten Boom, a Christian whose sister died in prison. They were incarcerated for hiding and saving Jews from the Nazis. Atheists and others dont understand the Holy Spirit. He indwells born again Christians. He sheds abroad the love of God in their hearts. He gives them a love for the souls of men, women, boys and girls, not willing that any should perish because of Jesus Christs sacri ce. Christians, beware! Your demonization as haters, bigots, homophobes is accelerating! Fear not. God does not give His children the spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mine! (II Timothy 1:7). In sync with God, we speak Biblical truth like Duck Dynastys Phil Robertson with malice toward none! Mandela and Paul Crouch, TBN founder, died about the same time. God used Mandela to deal with Apartheid. God used Crouch to saturate the world with satellites proclaiming the Gospel and Christs coming again, a happening of eternal value, Americas only hope! The media eulogized Mandela for weeks, never mentioning Crouchs death. The internet carried vitriolic anti-Christian comments about evangelists. Shame on them. It cannot be said of real Christians that no man careth for my soul (Psalm 142:4). FYI, we believe a bigot is one who Believes in Gods Only Truth, Hallelujah! By the way, liberal Supreme Court Justice Kennedy deserves impeachment for his DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) view. So should others in the D.C. administration be impeached! The purpose of World Religion Day is to call attention to the harmony of spiritual principles and the oneness of the worlds religions and to emphasize that religion is the motivating force for world unity. As stated in Bahai scripture: religion should be the cause of love and agreement, a bond to unify all mankind for it is a message of peace and goodwill to man from God, and Religion is the greatest of all means for the establishment of order in the world and for the peaceful contentment of all that dwell therein. Bob feels sorry for the guy. If he didnt remove it by today, he wouldve gone to jail. Its been two years. Now, its his responsibility to have it destroyed. Naybor said leaving the boat in the water for so long is not only a safety hazard but a environmental problem as well. It has to go all the way to the dump, said Naybor, and its taken at least two years and a court order to move it. Bellower said the shipyards past endeavors for helping Escambia county in removing derelict vessels was by storing the boats while in the process of having them dismantled. Stetler not only does videos, he builds the ying machines and sells them for considerably less than what they cost on the Internet. He said he wants to see others get into the hobby including children. Too many kids play video games. Id like to see them get involved in something else and ying model planes is a great way to learn aerodynamics. I want people to see what I see and do what I do. Its really fun for me. He said when he goes to parks to y the tricopter, children run up to him and want to do it too. I let them y a less expensive model with their own controller, but I can buddy mine to theirs so if they get in trouble with it, it wont crash. Stetler says he enjoys learning about and making new things. It came handy in his military career and lead to a major change in the way pilots communicate in combat by giving them access to Voice Over Secure Internet Protocol. A release issued by the US Air Force in 2008 says while on active duty Stetler received a request to correct a communications issue from a help desk because of his reputation for xing things. He used ve hours, a soldering iron and two meters of cable with a total cost of $1 to create the x. The innovation led to pilots tapping into the same resources available in their home units, offering realtime support, meaning direct, fast communication during times when its need most. Now we dont need to get on our keyboard to type our request or take our eyes off the screen, said Capt. Trey Teasley, a Predator pilot with Detachment 1, 46th Expeditionary Reconnaissance and Attack Squadron. We can just talk to the Combined Air Operations Center to receive clearance authority to engage a target or get other updates instead. Stetlers invention caught the attention of Lt. Gen. Gary North, U.S. Air Forces Central and 9th Air Force commander, who paid a personal visit to the staff sergeant, encouraging him to share his creation. I was trying to save peoples lives, replacing a bad system with a better one, said Stetler. He said he never expected to make a big difference. It just kind of exploded on me, just like my work with the tricopter has. Stetler medically retired as a tech sergeant and said hes turning his hobby into a job while he waits for his retirement pay to start. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, January 18, 2014 BSectionNothing on the tubeIm a big television fan. I admit it. Id rather watch television than a movie. I grew up watching Bewitched; Gilligans Island; the Brady Bunch; Perry Mason; Matlock; the Andy Grif th Show; Dark Shadows; the Monkeys ... ha really showing my age. There have been a lot of really good, original, classic television shows. But now, wow. TV is awful. I was ipping channels over the weekend, I was ipping channels last night it is all the same, no matter when you sit down to watch. And most of it is just awful. Lets see ... we have the almighty reality shows. Those are my biggest woe. I dont care what famous people who are famous for being rich are doing. I love Duck Dynasty but when they run the same episodes a thousand times, I turn it off. The new season began Wednesday night and it appears to me they are trying too hard now. Not as funny and it appeared scripted. There are reality shows about pawn shops; tattoo experts; storage unit auctions; repossessing cars; towing vehicles; people who travel around looking in old barns for cool stuff (I kind of like that one); and theres one about a guy who restores old stuff, though Ive never watched that one. Theres a naked survivor show where they drop a man and a woman out in the wilderness at a beginning spot, totally nude. They have to work their way through hostile environments to the pick-up spot. That one is pretty interesting, not because they are naked, but because they are totally exposed to the elements. They are rated on their skill as survivors before they are dropped off, and then again after they are picked up, based on how they perform. Its pretty interesting to see which of the two takes the lead and does the most work to nd food and build a structure. On one episode, they made shoes for themselves because their feet were getting all cut up on the vines and plants. Sometimes they fashion clothing of sorts out of leaves and such. One on episode, they were dropped in the Louisiana bayou. The man was really good at hunting and catching poisonous snakes to cook. That was interesting. Cop shows used to be really good, now they go more for sensationalism and criminal perverts that suspense. I could write better plots in my sleep. There are a couple of sitcoms I really enjoy as an adult, clever humor and funny dialogue. But I cannot have my 11-year-old daughter in the room when they are on because they say things that would have gotten an R rating in a movie two decades ago. Writers seem to think they have to use the word sex a hundred times to make it interesting. Its pretty sad, actually. National news stations are getting more pathetic by the minute. Justin Bieber egged someones house and caused $20,000 in damage, according to CNN, FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC. Interesting story the FIRST TIME we hear it. But the tenth, the hundredth? No so much. And talking heads who sit there and analyze Bieber? You have got to be kidding me. The problem with many nationally broadcast television news programs is they dont work for a living. They take the news they are handed by press agents and try to mold it into something no one else is reporting. Not only is it not working, but they could actually DO good work if they got out in the eld and found their own news. So television, all the way around, is just a disappointment these days. Some of the morning news shows have interesting features at times. Cartoons are always good, if you can nd the old ones. Educational television is enjoyable. The Weather Channel carries some good programs about unusual weather incidents and people who seem to defy nature. I dont have a lot of time to watch television anymore, but when I sit down to look at a show, I just wish there was one on that didnt lower my IQ or put me to sleep or embarrass me in front of my child. www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, January 18, 2014 BSection SPORTSPage 2By BECKY BONDURANTSpecial to the Press Gazette beckysrpgsports@yahoo.com Two Santa Rosa County high schools have had productive girls soccer seasons. Both Milton and Pace have experienced the reward of hard work, challenging practices and quality coaches assisting them. Pace recently defeated rival Gulf Breeze High School 1-0 at Gulf Breeze. Gulf Breeze had previously beat the Patriots, which offered the Patriots some satisfaction for their win. The Patriots winning goal was scored by Hannah Abrams, with credit also being given to goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart for stopping the Dolphins attempt to score. Milton nished its regular-season schedule with a 5-0 win over Escambia High School. We are really improving, Coach Jeff Klug said. This is a great nish for our season because we started this year 3-7. Pace nished its season 11-1-2 and Milton 8-8-1. Both teams are ready for district playoff action, with Pace entering tournament week seeded as the No. 1 team in District 1-4A. The Panthers are also con dent going into district playoffs. We nished the season strong, 5-1-1 in our last seven games, which included a road trip win against Tallahassee Leon, Klug said. Milton is scheduled to face Niceville in the rst night of action. Jenna Wade nished the regular season with 16 goals and 8 assists for the Panthers. Sabrina Bonilla had 12 goals and 9 assists, and Skylar Elsperman had 5 goals and 4 assists. Elsperman had all 5 of her goals and her 4 assists in the last three games of the regular season. It has honestly been a total team effort, Klug said. Goals have come from six or seven players, not one or two. The Panther mid eld is given credit for controlling the speed of the game, as well as the defensive efforts of the team. Goalkeeper Randi Bass is at the top of her game right now as well, Klug said. We have gotten better because every player has accepted the challenge and has improved their personal performance. As both teams contend for a district title, their season improvements are evident and impressive. Special to the Press GazetteImagine for a minute you are out to sea, line wet, with about 150 feet of water separating boat from the bottom. You feel a tug. Instinct kicks in and you want to yank up to set the hook, but you remember that doesnt work with circle hooks, a required gear when shing for reef sh like snapper and grouper in all Gulf waters and in federal waters of the Atlantic south of 28 degrees north latitude. So you gently start reeling it in, hoping nothing eats your catch before you can get it to the boat. Alas, the sh surfaces, but it is too small to keep and it seems to be experiencing barotrauma, a condition that occurs when the gases in the swim bladder expand after being brought to the surface from depth. STOP! The choices you make from here on can greatly impact whether or not that sh you are about to release survives to be caught another day. Do you know what to do? Post-release sh survival should be important to all anglers. The more sh that survive being caught and subsequently released, the more sh there will be in general. This can eventually mean extension of open seasons, increases in bag limits and more successful shing trips. While every situation is different, there are plenty of things you can do to help maximize the survival of sh you plan on releasing, from using wet hands when touching a sh to holding your catch horizontally. Matching your gear to the size sh you are targeting can help shorten the time it takes to get the sh to the boat, which can help a sh survive if released because it will be less exhausted. If your sh is experiencing barotrauma, time is of the essence. Barotrauma can potentially cause injury to the internal organs as they are pushed out of the body (signs of this include stomach protruding from mouth, intestines protruding from the anus, eyes bulging out and bloated belly). There are two main types of tools currently used to help relieve the effects of barotrauma. Venting tools are hollow, sharpened devices (think a syringe without the plunger) that can be used to release the expanded gases. Descending devices, which are used to send the sh back down to depth, also have promise. Until recently, it has been required to have and use venting tools when shing for reef sh in the Gulf, but this requirement was removed in federal waters last year and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) voted to remove the requirement in state waters last November. The rule change should go in effect around the end of the month. The removal of this rule will give anglers the ability to choose the best method to maximize survival of released sh. For example, on a hot summer day, using a descending device might be a better option because you are quickly returning the sh to the cooler water at the bottom. And while venting, when done correctly can help, not all sh need to be vented. Both tools have advantages and disadvantages. Hit a hot spot? It is possible to vent and release several sh in the same amount of time it would take to descend a single sh. Then again, not everyone feels con dent on when, where and how to vent. Going too deep or venting in the wrong place can cause more damage than good. But you also need to know what you are doing when using a descending device. If done incorrectly, the sh may come loose too soon. Descending devices also can require the dedication of a rod, which is used to bring the descending device down and back up again. While both devices can be homemade or purchased and while both are inexpensive, descending devices can cost, on average, slightly more than venting tools. Both devices also come in various sizes, but venting tools tend to generally be smaller than descending devices and do not take up a lot of space in an already-crowded tackle box. Either way, the choice is yours. So shop around, be sure to read the instructions thoroughly and, hopefully, take home a keeper or two. For more on how to make sure your sh survives release, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing and click on Saltwater, Recreational Regulations and Fish Handling.Helping your sh survive helps you Knights of Columbus Free Throw ChallengeCompetition is open to all boys and girls ages 10-14 for the Basketball Free Throw Challenge at 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Milton High School gym.
