But they arent the same programs and resources that were available nearly 35 years ago. AARP Driver Safety has continued to evolve with the times, and as of Jan. 1, 2014, AARP Driver Safety has launched the new and improved AARP Smart Driver Course. Why a new course? A lot has changed since many American drivers rst got their drivers license. The roads have changed. Cars and the technology inside them have changed. Even the people behind the wheel have changed. As drivers, if we dont keep up with those changes we put others or even ourselves at risk. H ow is the AA AA RP P S S mart Driver C C ourse different? The new and improved course curriculum was designed with the participant in mind, and it is different in many ways from previous editions including: A completely new, easy-to-follow format that incorporates adult-learning principles, features readerfriendly print types, full-color pages, an easy-to-follow format, and videos to supplement course content. With 19 areas of customization, the course is tailored to meet the needs of its participants by providing state-specic information that is easy to access and understand. Based on the results of a two-year research study, the course has been adjusted to include a focus on areas where older drivers could benet from additional training, including: roundabouts, pavement markings, stop-sign compliance, and safety issues such as speeding, seatbelt and turn signal use. Then you might enjoy joining the Tour Guide Team at the Panhandle Buttery House. Tour guides are trained volunteers who educate visitors about Florida butteries, buttery gardening, their importance in the ecosystem and their natural habitats. Volunteers will guide groups of mostly children on tours and school eld trips on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays, usually two to three hours at a time. New volunteers are teamed with experienced volunteers, and continue to support involvement by providing new, updated information when needed. The key to being a successful tour guide is attending the free required training course. After completing the course, new volunteers will have the tools and knowledge to extend awareness of these wonderful creatures to our community and visitors. Class size is limited to ensure individual attention and training can be provided, so advance registration for the training is required. The next training class is Thursday, January 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Panhandle Buttery House. The Panhandle Buttery House is located at 8581 Navarre Parkway (Hwy 98) in Navarre Park just west of the Navarre Bridge. For more information about becoming a tour guide or register for an upcoming training class please email grouptours@ panhandlebutteryhouse. org. Johnson, Escambia County Judge, has tendered his resignation from ofce for retirement to be effective Monday, March 31, 2014. Judge Johnson graduated from the University of West Florida with a degree in accounting and then went on to receive his Juris Doctorate at Florida State University. He was elected to the county bench in 1988 and has served the citizens of Escambia County as a county judge for 25 years following approximately 16 years in private practice. The judicial nominating process will begin in the near future, at the conclusion of which Governor Scott will appoint a new judge to the bench. Escambia Judge Thomas E. Johnson resignsIm one for change. Adjustments to big changes have always been ne with me. Perhaps its my optimistic attitude, maybe its my genetic make up Im not sure why but its exciting to do things differently in a big way. Move to another city, take a different job, start a new hobby, be challenged by a new sport, all of this is great. Challenging. Exciting. Im a rose colored glasses person. But its going a bit too far when Im too busy to make a pie crust. Just sayin. When one has an idea about oneself, and circumstances change to bring about a different ideal, it can be tough to roll with the changes (quoting REO Speedwagon). Images form in your mind as to the way things should be and when this fact changes, it can disturb the psyche. Within 2013, my youngest graduated high school, my granddaughter celebrated her rst birthday, I became gluten and dairy free, I started a new sport, I went back to work full time, my daughter got married, I sort of have an empty nest, I got a dog and two goats, and all of this is just ne. Im terribly, wonderfully happy with all of these changes. But things are not ne when I dont have time to bake. Baking is sort of like therapy for me. Its a slice of life Id rather not do without. Put a rolling pin in my hand and a dusting of our on my counter and Im in heaven. I love the smell of freshly baked bread and even though Im now gluten free, this is something Ive done for my family for twenty years. My grandmother taught me to bake bread over the telephone after I left home. She painstakingly explained how to activate yeast and exactly how to knead the dough to elasticity. When Im baking, I concentrate and create. Its like Im in the zone. My baking revelation came about recently when I had to purchase a pie for a get together instead of taking the time to bake it from scratch. Staring at the pie in the plastic and aluminum container caused stress for me. Its symbolic of time I no longer have, time I took for granted to serve my family. Carving out the time to do these things will happen because although I thrive with change, I do not want my standards to be lowered. If Im going to consume empty calories, they will be worth the weight, so to speak. This is my new year resolve. Keep on rolling.Roll with the changes PP AmeMELA HOLt TKeeping It Simple

LocalSanta Rosas Press Gazette| A3Saturday, January 4, 2014The incident began when complaints were received about two men causing a disturbance inside McDonalds on Gulf Breeze Parkway about 11:20 p.m. Reports state Hammett and another man, Carl Hobbs, 33, Milton, were sitting in a car outside of the restaurant when of cers arrived. Of cers said Hammett was belligerent and began screaming obscenities about not driving while being questioned. Of cers reported he seemed intoxicated or on drugs. After questioning Hammett, Of cer Debbi Lewis was struck in the chest and face with the back of Hammetts hand, while he held onto his sandwich. When Hammett was told he was under arrest by a second police of cer, Sgt. Mark Lyster, the man again grabbed Lysters arm cutting his forearm with an unknown object, according to reports. Police said Hammett was thrashing around and forcefully pulling away, making it dif cult for the of cers to take him into custody. One of cer spotted a knife in the suspects back pocket, reports said, so the of cers took him to the ground to gain control. Hammett was kicking both feet to keep from being put into the police car, police said. Once inside the car, Hammett continued to thrash and kicked the windows inside the vehicle in an attempt to break them out, according to reports. Lyster advised the ofcer transporting to take Hammett straight to the Santa Rosa County Jail. While crossing the Garcon Point Bridge, reports said Hammett continued resisting and kicking, causing the of cer to call for back up twice and stop to restrain the suspect. Police said Hammett was tied with a belt around his legs but broke free. Of cers said they placed the man in leg irons to prevent him from having leverage to kick out the windows of the car. At the jail, Hammett continued to be violent with booking deputies, reports note. Once in his cell, Hammett rammed his face and head into the cell door and window while screaming obscenities. Police said while inventorying Hammetts car for removal from McDonalds property, numerous items were found in the vehicle. Included in those, a empty Crown Royal Bottle in the trunk, along with an empty box of Fat Tire Ale, and empty bottle of Sam Adams. Other alcohol items were located, along with what appeared to be Spice, several burnt marijuana cigarettes, a small plastic baggie with a white powdery substance that tested positive for meth, and an open orange and blue pill capsule of Vyvanse containing white powdery substance; and a silver pill container with a green residue inside. Hammett was charged with battery, resisting an of cer, damage propertycriminal mischief, disorderly intoxication, dangerous drugs, two counts of drug possessions, marijuana possession and possession of drug equipment. He was still being held on a $42,000 bond on Friday. Cleveland said the majority of the horse population is well cared for; however, there are a growing number of horses who suffer from neglect, abuse or abandonment. The SRCHAC mission was to provide the county with volunteer help and nancial assistance needed to assist in the handling of horse welfare issues, improving upon the welfare of the almost 14,000 horses in Santa Rosa County. In 2013, the SRCHAC aided 45 horses with grant funds from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and also aided 42 horses requiring additional assistance from grant funding and matching funds with the Unwanted Horse Coalition Inc. Cleveland said the majority of assistance went toward hay, vaccinations, emergency medical and dentistry, emergency euthanasia and gelding (castrations). Other avenues of assistance with SRCHAC were education through free public seminars and clinics, educational information and resource brochures. Cleveland said some of these programs will continue to remain available through the website or email. She said during the seven years the councils existence, education about equine wellness increased. She is still very interested in keeping this aspect going. The opportunity for SRCHAC to provide low-cost clinics for dental care, blood test, castration and vaccinations provided for participants will unfortunately no longer available. HORSE from page A1 FIGHTS from page A1By PAMELA HOLT623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com Santa Rosa County is on the cutting edge of solar technology, according to vice president of business development of Compass Solar Dan Gardner. Gardner said 60-70 percent of the companys business is within the boundaries of Santa Rosa County. Compass Solar has sold solar systems throughout the country, being a federal, state, commercial and residential solar contractor. He said in the beginning of his dive into solar energy, the cost of putting in a solar energy system was substantial. However, recent changes in competition and consumer interest brought the cost to more reasonable measures. Financing the cost over 20 to 30 years would bring your kilowatt hour to 5, he said. As more people go solar, the community could have a lower cost of living. As more people become interested, the cost has come down dramatically. A solar electric systems photovoltaic (PV) residential system installed two years ago cost $27,000. This year the same system installed cost $16,000, he said. He explains his residential customers are not getting off the grid completely. Only people in extreme, remote areas do that, he said, but people with the solar system installed in their homes are still connected to the grid, but if the grid fails, you can utilize your system as a generator. It will provide continuous power with a battery back up, even at night. While the grid is still working, he said, the solar PV system will provide power to minimize your bill from the electric company or have a credit applied to your bill. Santa Rosa County is rapidly moving toward being a green county, he explains. Santa Rosa County Commissioner Jim Melvin said hes encouraged to hear more county residents are moving toward green technology. He said he is looking at green technology for the county and is very interested in changing over to energy ef ciency. Gardner continues to say most of the work theyve performed in the county is residential work, including solar electric systems photovoltaic (PV), solar pool heaters, solar water heaters and solar attic fans. Gardner said the county should be proud of what theyre doing, getting involved and bringing the county towards an environmentally conscious community. Gardner said Compass will be traveling in February to the Dominican Republic after being selected as one of 35 Florida companies to join Governor Rick Scott on an Enterprise Florida TEAM Florida trade mission to Santo Domingo. He said because energy prices are high throughout the Caribbean, solar energy is a great opportunity. Mini grids are like small solar farms. When an island country installs a mini grid the government will not have to pay the large amount of cost to set up a utility plant, said Gardner. He continues to say a $100 electric bill here with traditional electricity would be a $300 bill in an island country.SRC moving toward solar technology SPECIAL TO THE PRESS GAZETTESolar electric systems (PV) installed will provide power to minimize your bill from the electric company or have credit applied to your bill. Sat. 12:44 p.m.This is Roy from Pace. I just read in an older edition of the SRPG Dec. 11 about a man that said he was the oldest living WWII veteran in SRC and hes 94. Thats all well and good. There is an older one whos name is Buford Plant. Hes one year older, hes 95. Mr. Lassiters age is 94. Its only a year, but I just thought Id bring it to your attention. Thank you very much.Sat. 5:11 p.m.This is for the editor. I know you have to watch what people say in the paper. But we leave our names so where people can talk back and forth. If we cant do that... the speak out is the only reason I get the paper. If you have to decide what we say and tell us what we gotta say ahead of time, I dont think we need the Speak Out column or the paper. Thank you. Editors note: Allow me to clarify. We are talking about hurtful comments targeting a speci c person. Referring to another persons Speak Out comments is not a problem. It is the ones who have issues with a person and want to use the Speak Out line to publicly humiliate them or continually argue about the same issue, saying the same things repeatedly. Thank you for your comment and please keep calling in.Sat. 8:39 p.m.I just want to say about the young man from Gulf Breeze who killed his mother. I see in the news he was by himself. I just wonder whether or not he has family or friends or co-workers who can help him. Hes only seventeen. I know if he killed his mother its very wrong. Remember his age. He needs help. If he has family, father, aunts, cousins, a close friend, case worker. All of those people who come from another country who receives help. We have one of our own who needs help. I think, please share how we can help him. Or if he can get help himself. I know Sheriff Hall is very kind. Thank you, this is Maria in Milton.Sat. 9:08 p.m.This is Gary. I just want to say thank you to the East Milton Fire Department and to the paramedics who came out to help my elderly neighbor who fell in her home and broke her hip. They were very kind and gentle and caring. They were very professional, the people who came out and took very good care of her. They deserve a pat on the back. Thank you.Sun. 12:33 p.m.I love hearing that Jesus is still performing miracles. The one about the woman with the blood clot, I get chills. Glad that someone is doing more for the animal shelter, Im praying it will one day it will be a no kill facility. Lynne, I love your articles. Keep it up. God Bless. It was the year of lies that nally revealed the true Obama. His ObamaCare sales pitch, If you like your insurance, you can keep your insurance, period a lie. Saying before the election that the Benghazi disaster was caused by a YouTube video a lie. Claiming that the NSA is not collecting our Internet and phone records a lie. And denying that the Obama administrations IRS was targeting Tea Party groups for special scrutiny a lie. Yet there is also humor in a look back at 2013: 1. Obama denied knowing anything about all the scandals. The hardest part of his lying was making folks believe Joe Biden was the mastermind behind the deceptions. 2. Joe Biden, who looks like a guy hosting a seminar on condo ipping, was sent to Asia on a goodwill trip this year. Well, that was what he thought. He was actually sent out to get lunch at Panda Express for three days in a row. Biden has done more to dispel the notion of white supremacy than any politician before him. 3. Obama wanted to invade Syria but could not get any allies to go along with him. England wanted to use economic sanctions and Germany an embargo. France wanted to use arrogant sarcasm. 4. After stopping the U.S. invasion of Syria through his diplomacy, Russian President Vladimir Putin was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. I like his chances. If his game plan holds true to form, Putin plans to have all the other nominees killed. 5. Gay marriage is now legal in 17 states; voters were swayed by that Liberace movie. Gays are on the way up, which is good, and that also helps explain all the new brunch places opening for business. 6. The royal baby was born last summer and was formally welcomed by Great Britain with a ceremonial 21-gun salute. There is one thing we know for sure: babies love loud, repetitive gun re. Buckingham Palace did not reveal the babys gender until early summer. That went so well they are thinking about revealing Camillas next summer. 7. Auburns Gus Malzahn out-coached Alabamas Nick Saban to win the SEC championship. Coach Malzahn is so loved by male Auburn football fans that it makes Duck Dynastys patriarch, Phil Robertson, uncomfortable. 8. The NFL had issues early in the year. More than 25 players were arrested, culminating in the Patriots Aaron Hernandez being charged with murder. Football players are always looking to break records; sadly, it looks like they are trying to break O.J. Simpsons. 9. After a Baltimore Ravens game, police arrested a stripper who pinned a patrons coat jacket in her car door and dragged him for ve blocks. This was voted the worst lap dance in Maryland history. 10. Concussion issues still plague the NFL. Dolphins linemen Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin had a careerending hazing drama. The only positive thing about that is neither will remember it in ve years. 11. Hillary Clinton dodged testifying on her role in Benghazi by saying she fell and hit her head. Her staff jokingly gave her a helmet upon her return to work, marking the second Clinton in Washington whom others insisted wear protection. 12. I like Mayor Rob Ford for two reasons: he is funny and I dont live in Toronto. Obamas favorability rating fell to 37% while Fords climbed to 50%. The only conclusion? Obama would have been better off smoking crack than pushing ObamaCare. It takes a awed leader to sink that badly in the polls when neither drugs nor hookers are involved. 13. Edward Snowden helped Americans realize what the NSA is doing to us. He ed to Russia for asylum, which is like going to Ireland to get sober. It turns out our own government is our creepy stalker. Stalking is when a couple goes out together for a fun night on the town and only one of them is aware of it. 14. Our government, which cannot get a website working, can somehow collect personal emails and texts from all of us. These are the same folks who allowed a murderous, psychotic, impostor sign language interpreter a foot from our President. The schizophrenic guy said he heard voices in his head; apparently, one of them told him he does not know sign language. 15. Catholics elected an open-minded and very popular Pope. He has reached out to young people in a new way for the church, one that is not followed by a con dential court settlement. 16. While the Pope pivoted progressive, parts of the GOP continue striving to ban gay marriage, enforce sodomy laws and outlaw abortion because, as we know, Republicans goal is to get intrusive government out of our personal lives. 17. George Bush remained low-key in retirement, spending time painting. He said he is having fun, then remarked, Not Bill Clinton fun, but just normal fun. I started an online petition to President Obama on Change.org as I have been laid off since 2008, age 55, ran out of unemployment bene ts in 2010 and been homeless since then. Between my age, being homeless and long-term unemployed, I have not been able to get another steady job. Let us encourage our government to reward employers who gives a homeless person a job. She loves Alabama football. She enjoys going to teen night at church. She likes animals and her favorites are monkeys. Christa does average work in school but she would benet from parents who would actively encourage and support her studies. Christa is cautious regarding her feelings about adoption. She says she wants a nice family who dont yell and who will understand her need to move slowly while getting to know them. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, January 4, 2014 BPage 1SectionI think I have the afterChristmas, daughter-left-to-goback-to-Africa, still cleaningup-tinsel, havent-carried-thewrapping-paper-trash-out-to-thecurb-yet BLUES. It comes every year, this big letdown after the holidays are over. Its January now and life will slowly get back to normal, except everyone is broke from buying gifts they couldnt afford and everyone needs to lose a few pounds after eating food they really shouldnt have been eating and massive amounts of it at that. Its cold and rainy and dreary outside. Despite temperatures below freezing this week, we wont likely see any snow urries, unlike our northern friends who are about to get slammed by Hercules. My childhood bestfriend from Indiana posted this long weather warning for what they can expect up there this week. The cold, ice and snow are going to set records that havent been broken in decades. After living in Florida for more than 40 years, I cannot remember being trapped inside a house for days or weeks at a time because of the cold. I have been thinking about it and I really cant recall what we did to kill time. I cant remember much of anything except, I guess, trying to stay warm. I think we played bored gamesI mean board games. We ate. Seems like mom baked for us. Popcorn. We had popcorn. As an adult, I havent experienced what it is like to watch snow blowing sideways, creating huge snowdrifts, since I was a child. I do remember what it feels like when icy frozen snow slides up your leg when your boots go through the crest of the drift. I remember what it feels like when that same snow slides back down your leg and into your boot. Theres a saying people like to throw around about how you cant really appreciate the good unless you experience the bad. I think Floridians are spoiled by their warmer temps and fun on the beach in January. We need some snow to make us appreciate what we have; big giant snowdrifts blocking our doors. We need to depend on our neighbors for wood to burn to keep our houses toasty. We need to look out the windows and only see whiteness. My dad was an air conditioning and heating man. In 1974, he took our family, ve kids in a station wagon, in September just before winter arrived, and drove us to Sunny Tropical Florida, near Tampa. Bah-hum-bug. I hated Florida. I despised Florida. None of my friends were here. Gone was everything familiar, including corn elds that grew right up to the edge of our yard. I missed the smell of burning res and re places. The beach and hot feet on concrete replaced the cool weather and leaves changing. Nothing was normal and I seriously longed to go home. Dad opened a business on Anna Maria Island and xed air conditioners instead of heaters in the below-zero freezing winter temps. He was successful and we lived on the Island for a very long time. The original phone number we had in 1974 still exists it was still working at his house when he died of cancer in 2012. As time passed, I got accustomed to Florida and it became my home. I think about the military families here in this area and about the children who move around a lot. They seem well adjusted and happy. I was not, for a long time. I think if I could have one wish, just for me, (one of those sel sh wishes where you dont consider anyone else) I would move back home to Indiana and nish the next half of my life there. Sounds nice, but something tells me with Dad gone and everyone grown, it would never feel the same. I dont know if that is true or not, but I hope one day I get the chance to nd out. In the meantime, heres to another year in the Sunshine State. Jus gotta nd my umbrella. But for a lot of us, leasing a large chunk of property is just not nancially feasible. So Im here to tell you that you dont need a large tract of land if your small hunting lease is in the right spot and you manage your herd correctly and let the young bucks walk. My wife and I lease a little patch of woods less than 30 minutes from where we live and work. Its barely 20 acres but has provided us some nice hunting over the past couple seasons. So weve made our little lease as good as we can make it. Weve got corn and soybean feeders and mineral rocks out. We hire a good friend to bring over his tractor, and we plant cool-weather and warmweather food plots twice a year. Theres a ock of turkeys on the property and a small deer herd. Were familiar with the deer that use the property because of the game cameras we have out and from what we see with our own eyes. This season, we decided not to shoot any does during the archery and antlerless deer seasons because we want to increase our herd. There are a few young bucks, including a 6pointer, which weve seen and passed on because we want to give them the chance to grow another year or two, giving us something nice to go after in the future. But there were two nice, mature 8points that we have seen on camera for the past two years, and those were the only two deer that we were going to target this season, unless some other mature bucks showed up. The dominant buck in the herd, however, was a 4.5-year-old 8 point with a heavy and very symmetrical rack and a white patch of hair between his shoulders. Thats the deer I set my sights on. We named him Blaze a ne Florida buck. During one short, afternoon sit, there was a steady, northeast wind, perfect for our favorite tree stand. I had only about 45 minutes to hunt before dark. Soon as I settled in, two does stepped out of the woods and into the food plot followed, by a spike. It was the pre-rut period, and we were seeing more deer activity, especially bucks, during daylight hours. Things looked promising. I enjoyed watching the three deer graze on oats, wheat and rye, and I heard the turkeys y up to roost at sunset. The does were still upwind but started acting strange, and one of them put its tail up and started blowing. They all ended up running off.
