From Staff ReportsOn Christmas Eve, a domestic violence incident in Gulf Breeze left a mother dead and her teenage son in jail, charged with rst degree murder after stabbing her to death, according to ofcials with the Santa Rosa Sheriffs Ofce. Brandon Aydelott, 17, Gulf Breeze, has been charged following a confession to investigators during an interview, reports say. His mother, Sharon Lynn Aydelott, is listed as the victim. SRSO investigators say the suspect had Special to the Press GazetteOn Monday, the Santa Rosa County Sheriffs Ofce responded to an armed robbery call the Navarre Tom Thumb on Highway 87 in Holley. The time of the call was about 6:30 pm. Just moments before, a white female entered the store wearing a black cap, gloves and sunglasses. Armed with a handgun, she demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk complied and handed over cash. The suspect was apologetic to the cashier and stated Im sorry, Merry Christmas and exited the building. The suspect was in the store for about 15 seconds. Deputies arrived and began their investigation. K-9 also assisted in the case. Something horrible just happened. There is no one nearby who feels their pain; their house just burned, they just lost a loved one, they were a victim of a crime...they need an ear to listen. Trauma Intervention Programs Inc. (TIP) is a national non-prot organization founded in 1985. It supplies volunteers to support emotionally traumatized citizens immediately after tragedy strikes. Charlie Batson, crisis team manager for Santa Rosa and Escambia counties, said TIP volunteers provide emotional support when it is needed most, right after the tragedy happens and before the victims support system arrives. Batson says when rst responders access the situation they will call the TIP dispatcher for assistance. We are part of the rst responder team, he says. When a tragedy happens, TIP volunteers shoot for a 20minute response time. They arrive on the scene, receive a brieng from a rst responder and sit with the victim in need. We provide whatever they need, Batson said. Tissues, water or answers. If they have lost a loved one and cannot pay for a burial, we give them contacts to agencies who can help. We give them the information where they can make the call. We do this to empower them. We match them with the appropriate agencies to meet their need. Answers to questions are vital to their state of mind, he said. If their question is, Why did this happen? our answer is We dont know why this happened, but were here to listen, he said. TIP volunteers wait with the person they are helping until Red Cross arrives and/or their support system like family or friends, he says. After a foreclosure following difcult nancial situations, Meadows found himself without a place to live. He said he met his future landlord, Paul Qualls, while working at a restaurant and told him about being desperate. Meadows said he was shown a mobile home and signed a rental contract with Qualls, despite the fact the mobile home was in disrepair. Meadows claimed after talking it over with the landlord, the pair agreed Qualls would be responsible for repairing the mobile home, bringing it to the point of being safe and livable. Meadows said the work was never completed so he began withholding his rent checks to force repairs. Meadows said the oors were soft and damaged to the point his child fell through, and holes were big enough that light from the outside was visible. The hallway toilet was not in the oor, and the bathroom tub and kitchen sink were not connected to the septic tank. Qualls said he agrees a verbal contract was made, however, he remembers it the other way. Qualls said the renter was going to pay less rent and do the repairs himself. The disagreement led to the Meadows family eviction the day after Christmas. Qualls will end up repairing the hazard, according to Florida Department of Health Director Mary Beverly, Milton ofce, after a complaint was led with her agency. Qualls said the mobile home was livable when Meadows moved in, although cosmetic repairs were underway. Qualls said during inspection, oors and septic tank were ne. We did a walk through and looked at everything. They were desperate, he said. Beverly said a complaint about the property was led with her ofce on Dec. 13 because of the drainage issues with the bathtub and sink. She said the landowner will be required to deal with the issue in 2448 hours. We try to work with people, Beverly said. But with public nuisance issues there is a very short turnaround. Qualls said hes not a monster and doesnt want to have to throw anyone out. Theyve not made this easy for me. LocalSanta Rosas Press Gazette| A3Saturday, December 28, 2013 By Anita BreedingSpecial to the Press Gazette The Blue Star Marker previously located in the Hwy 90 median in front of Whites Appliances has been removed by the City of Milton and moved to its warehouses for restoration. It will be returned to its original location and rededicated in an appropriate ceremony in June 2014. Morning Glory Circle of the Milton Garden Club has been pursuing this project for several years and with the new landscaping program taking place on Hwy 90, it was the perfect time to clean up marker and the area around the Blue Star Marker. Blue Star Markers were originated in the mid-1940s in the Northeast to honor all service members and was adopted as a project of the National Garden Clubs. Today, Blue Star Markers can be seen all over the country sponsored and beautied by local Garden Clubs to honor the country these men and women have fought for. The Milton marker was installed and dedicated in the mid 1960s by the Milton Garden Club. The Mayor and Milton City Council have wholeheartedly supported the Milton Garden Clubs efforts to refurbish and return the marker as a renewed tribute to our service members. Through the cooperation of Mr. Gerald Ward, Milton Public Works, and Mr. Lee Worthington, City of Milton Landscape architect, the dreams of the Milton Garden Club are coming to fruition and will soon be back in its original location. If you or your organization would like to contribute to the rebeautication of the Blue Star Marker or desire more information, you may contact Anita Breeding, 623-9034.Blue Star Marker is part of restoration Mothers Against Drunk Driving and law enforcement agencies are hoping people will see red this holiday season as a reminder not to drink and drive. MADD Northwest Florida has given approximately 300 red ribbons to the Pensacola Police Department to be given away to motorists to display on their cars during the holiday season. MADDs Tie One On for Safety red ribbon campaign is in its 27th year. By displaying the red ribbon on vehicles, drivers are to be encouraged to plan ahead and designate a nondrinking driver. MADD Northwest Florida knows that it takes more than just a few people making safe choices, so we urge our local residents to lead by example and spread the message of planning ahead for a designated non-drinking driver, said Marylin Dorsey of MADD Northwest Florida. Were honored to join with our local law enforcement agencies to Tie One On for Safety and to help make our communities safer during the holiday season and year round. The ribbons are available at no charge around-the-clock from the Desk Sergeants Office at the Pensacola Police Department, 711 N. Hayne St.MADD red ribbons at Pensacola Police DepartmentBy PAMELA HOLT623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com Theres something about the change of the calendar year which prompts most people to join a gym, get organized, save more money, quit smoking, spend more time with family and meet someone new and fall in love. New Years resolutions begin at the stroke of midnight and though most will not own up to having made one, about 50 percent of people set goals for themselves with high hopes of carrying them throughout the year. When asked on the Santa Rosa Press Gazette Facebook page, four responses were: Cruise rst thing... then Ill work on the others... buy a house, lose weight... the others responses listed survival, a new president and to be more patient. Reports show people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who dont make resolutions, although only 14 percent of people over 50 years old achieve their resolutions each year. Do they last? 75 percent of resolutions are maintained through the rst week, by spring 68 percent who made resolutions have broken them and only 46 percent of resolutions are victorious past six months, with a sad 8 percent of people succeeding with their goals. Experts say most resolutions are self improvement based and if you want to keep your goals in the forefront, the secret is persistence, not perfection.Be persistent about New Years resolutions I recently came in contact with two different people and after much introspection and listening to both sides, I wasnt sure who or if either were telling the truth. To be honest, I wondered if the truth was somewhere in the middle, or within the midst. Watching the television recently, I came across a show which actually said it was okay to tell a lie sometimes, and sometimes it is even best to bend the truth to save someone elses feelings. Honesty today is a character trait which can sometimes be considered ambiguous at best. As humans, were all hypocritical at times and I am no different, but like our mothers always say, honesty is the best policy. My daddy says a mans word is his bond and he also told my brother to have a firm handshake. Be that as it may, it works. Lets put this in perspective. When asked a direct question, do you always answer honestly or do you answer accordingly to what you think youre expected to say? If the question is about fact or philosophy, do you cater to what you consider the politically correct answer or do you always speak your mind and heart? Do you seek truth or validation for your own preconceived notions? Truth corresponds with reality, by definition, and if we were to take it to the next line of reason, we get what is real is true and whats true is real. Even a child knows whats true and whats not, therefore, he knows when hes lying. Ask any two year old child who is caught in a cookie jar after being told to stay away, (with visible crumbs around their mouth), did they eat a cookie and see if you get the truth. Probably not. Most children know the difference but choose to answer with what is the easiest course to keep from being disciplined. Consider the theme of Shakespeares Hamlet which speaks to mans need to face the ugly truth even when its unpleasant, and especially when its within our own self. We humans dont like to see our own dishonesty or lack of integrity. Yet, we must deal with it or the truth becomes our perception of reality instead of steadfast honesty. So, its best to admit when our hand is in the cookie jar. Even if its difficult, its the right choice. To be or not to be... that is the question PAMELA HOLTKeeping It Simple

ROSEMARY BEACH, FL Its an alltoo-familiar story of government incompetence, waste and fraud. Virtually unreported until his sentencing, John Beale, the Environmental Protection Agencys (EPA) top paid employee and its global warming expert, got 30 years last week. He pled guilty to bilking taxpayers out of nearly $1 million by not showing up for work in a comical pattern of lies that went on for years. For one stretch of 18 months, he did not set foot in the EPA building (named for Bill Clinton). Wow, Al Gore cannot get any respect the environment was kinda his thing. When he reports to prison next year, it will mark the rst federal gig for which Beale has actually shown up. To get out of work, this front man for the Obama administrations man-made global warming narrative pretended to be a secret CIA agent. His boss, Gina McCarthy, the woman with short hair and sensible shoes who is now running the EPA, bought Beales story for years. Beale did not go to work, lied about being a CIA agent, billed hundreds of thousands of dollars of fraudulent expenses to the EPA, lied about having malaria to get a handicap parking spot for a job he did not go to, and said he had been in Vietnam. All lies. Who does he think he is a U.S. Senator from Connecticut? And what other elaborate frauds did he fabricate to advance his own interests? Instead of working, Beale spent time at his vacation home on Cape Cod reading and gardening. The Princeton-educated Beale said he fabricated those stories because of his need to engage in excessively reckless, risky behavior. We all know how risky gardening on Cape Cod can be. For his ne work, Mr. Beale was paid $206,000 a year plus bonuses actually awarded by the EPA. He also ew, mostly in rst class, and stayed in the most expensive hotels. He once ew to London at taxpayer expense. A coach ticket would have cost $1,000. Beales rst class ticket cost us $14,000. He billed us $57,000 for trips to California to visit his parents. All were gleefully paid for by our EPA. Beale got caught when he retired with an elaborate gala on a yacht. Two years later he was still drawing his EPA salary, and no one in government questioned it. How could he be getting paid and not be doing anything? How could he be drawing a check from the EPA and a check from the CIA? How could he be retired two years and still be receiving full salary and bonuses? Why do we taxpayers still put up with this? The EPA assured us the agency has put in place additional safeguards to help protect against fraud and abuse related to employee time. Well thats all I need to hear; case closed. Do you know what that means? More bonuses for EPA watchdogs. Is it any wonder that skyrocketing regulations cost us $1.8 trillion per year, or 11.6 percent of GDP? Keep in mind, Beale is the architect of our governments climate policies espousing man-made global warming. It is Obamas dream to return this country to what it was 10 thousand years ago: an Arctic landscape with glaciers in the Mississippi River. For anyone willing to pay attention, this EPA debacle, along with the ObamaCare train wreck, serves to illustrate why expanding government does not work. They also explain why Obamas favorability ratings continue to plummet. In fact he has hit rock bottom so often that his EPA needs to investigate him for fracking. Marked foreverDear Editor, My trouble began in the year 2013 at the age of 6. I was tagged at school as a sexual predator and suspended under national policy of zero tolerance because the schools are run from Washington D.C. Locals dont have the ability to handle their own schools it seems. Gee whiz, all I did was kiss a little girl and, sorry if I upset anyone, Im just a little boy, dont you know? Now here it is in the future and Im all grown up, but the past still haunts me. One day I walked into Uncles Mall of Zero Tolerance. I did the natural thing I thought and slipped a quick glance at a pretty woman. Suddenly Uncles zero tolerance security SWAT team jumps me and throws me on the oor. They arrest me for sexual harassment. Now in the New Amerika, komrad citizen, the penalty is mandatory life in prison under Uncle DCs zero tolerance laws with no shame even, but shame on you, America!Asa McKeithenMiltonReverse racismDear Editor, The 2008 U.S. Presidential election gave America its rst African-American President and an old topic, being racism. We all hear the racism topic, but it is abused by left-leaning Democrats. When you are elected to any public of ce, you are there to represent equally all Americans regardless of skin color, yours or theirs. Presidential policy will incur criticisms regardless. Normally, the louder the criticism the more unpopular the policy. Not being able to criticize U.S. policy because of presidential skin color is reverse racism and is just as bad as racism itself in government because that is how dictatorships are born. Calling someone racist for criticizing policy is ludicrous. That is what happened to the Republican Party in the House of Representatives. The more they fought against Obamacare the louder the racism chat got. Now we are all racists, AfricanAmericans included, chatting bad law. Barack Obama said a lot of good things while campaigning problem is he has done the exact opposite of what he said. If I wont do business with someone who has lied to me why should I treat Barack any different? If it was an unintended lie then he will correct it to the peoples satisfaction. If he doesnt correct it then it was an intended lie thus the reason for my disdain for the man. It is not his skin color but his character!Steven M. King Milton Politicians can be progressives, liberals, conservatives, Democrats or Republicans, and right-wingers. They just cant be dumb. The American people will never elect them to of ce. Lets look at it. For years, I used to blame politicians for our economic and social mess. That changed during the 1980s as a result of several lunches with Sen. Jesse Helms, RN.C., which produced an epiphany of sorts. At the time, I had written several columns highly critical of farm subsidies and handouts. Helms agreed, saying something should be done. Then he asked me whether I could tell him how he could vote against them and remain a senator from North Carolina. He said that if he voted against them, North Carolinians would vote him out of of ce and replace him with somebody probably worse. My epiphany came when I asked myself whether it was reasonable to expect a politician to commit what he considered to be political suicide in a word, be dumb. The Of ce of Management and Budget calculates that more than 40 percent of federal spending is for entitlements for the elderly in the forms of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing and other assistance programs. Total entitlement spending comes to about 62 percent of federal spending. The Congressional Budget Of ce estimates that entitlement spending will consume all federal tax revenue by 2048. Only a dumb politician would argue that something must be done immediately about the main components of entitlement spending: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Senior citizens indignantly would tell him that what theyre receiving are not entitlements. Its their money that Congress put aside for them. They would attack any politician who told them that the only way they get Social Security and Medicare money is through taxes levied on current workers. The smart politician would go along with these peoples vision that Social Security and Medicare are their money that the government was holding for them. The dumb politician, who is truthful about Social Security and Medicare and their devastating impact on our nations future, would be run out of of ce. Social Security and Medicare are by no means the only sources of unsustainable congressional spending. There are billions upon billions in handouts going to farmers, corporations, poor people and thousands of federal programs that have no constitutional basis whatsoever. But a smart politician reasons that if Congress enables one group of Americans to live at the expense of another American, then in fairness, what possible argument can be made for not giving that same right to other groups of Americans? Making a constitutional and moral argument against the growth of handouts would qualify as dumb. Lets examine some statements of past Americans whom weve mistakenly called great but would be deemed both heartless and dumb if they were around today. In 1794, James Madison, the father of our Constitution, irate over a $15,000 congressional appropriation to assist some French refugees, said, I cannot undertake to lay my nger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents. He added, Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government. In 1854, President Franklin Pierce vetoed a bill intended to help the mentally ill, saying, I cannot nd any authority in the Constitution for public charity ... and to approve such spending would be contrary to the letter and the spirit of the Constitution and subversive to the whole theory upon which the Union of these States is founded. Grover Cleveland vetoed hundreds of congressional spending bills during his two terms as president in the late 1800s. His often stated veto message was, I can nd no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution. If these men were around today, making similar statements, Americans would hold them in contempt and disqualify them from of ce. Thats a sad commentary on how weve trashed our Constitution. Walter E. Rick Scott and FWC announced today will be the last freshwater license-free shing day for 2013. With families already together for the holidays, this will be a great opportunity for loved ones to head to Floridas freshwater bodies and try out those new rod and reels they got during the holiday season. These license free shing days are a great way to promote the Sunshine State, while supporting our communities that rely on shing, Scott said. According to the American Sportshing Association, Florida had 1.2 million non-resident anglers visit the Sunshine State in 2011, the next highest state was Michigan with 347,029 visiting anglers. Although no shing license is required, all other shing and boating rules and regulations still apply (see MyFWC.com/Fishing for details). Beginning in 2014, there will be eight license-free shing days that will fall on the same weekend days from year to year. This will allow anglers to plan shing trips in advance and businesses and nonprot groups to create events around these shing license holidays.PAMELA HOLT | Press GazetteThe ribbon cutting ceremony of the June Ates Arena was a success. The new facility is named after local 4H leader and horse enthusiast June Ates. The arena is a venue providing for agricultural needs with heavy equipment, outdoor events, car shows, festivals and emergency needs, should they arise. Santa Rosa County District 2 Commissioner Bob Cole, the Santa Rosa county Fair Association, the Tourist Development Council and local equestrian community were instrumental in the creation of the arena, which is 300 feet by 205 feet. The project is estimated at $1.23 million from District 2 recreational funds. Today is the last 2013 freshwater license-free shing day Ates Arena grand opening

LocalSanta Rosas Press Gazette| A9Saturday, December 28, 2013to do anything. Hes done more harm than good, Qualls said. He accepted the condition of the residence when he signed the contract. What he should have done is let us do our job. Qualls led an eviction notice with the courts on Nov. 18, citing lack of rent payment. Each month includes a $10 a day late fee, even though Qualls said the lease cited a $15 a day fee, making the total $4,362.50. Qualls said twice he gave the Meadows a 30-day extension on eviction because they told him Meadows wife, Carrie, was waiting for a disability settlement from Social Security. A Santa Rosa County ordinance states unsafe or unsanitary buildings are illegal. Section 12-1 in the county code said all unsafe buildings are declared a public nuisance and shall be abated by repair and rehabilitation or demolition. However, Robin Leverton, administrative assistant to Randy Jones, Santa Rosa County compliance investigator, said codes involving unsafe buildings and homes are enforced by complaint. We will not proceed with a case if someone is living in it, she said, referring to demolition. The Florida Bar Association (FBA) states under Rights and Duties of Tenants and Landlords the landlord is required to provide a t and safe dwelling, citing specic description of what that entails. The FBA continues to say the tenant has the right, under certain very aggravated circumstances caused by the landlords neglect, to withhold rent. This can only be done when the landlord fails to comply with an important responsibility, such as providing a safe and habitable home in compliance with local housing codes. Before rent is withheld, the tenant must give the landlord seven (7) days written notice of the problem so the landlord can x it. Additional specics are provided in Section 83.51 of the Florida Landlord Tenant Law in Chapter 83. Randy Jorgenson, AICP planning manager for the city of Milton, said abatement cases are difcult, and it is not unusual for a county or city to enforce these ordinances by complaint. He said it is unfortunate because it could lead to a landlord to become a slumlord: a person who preys on a person in a desperate situation. Meadows said he and his family have made other living arrangements following the Dec. 26 eviction with sheriffs deputies. Court records report the eviction case is closed. The victim succumbed to the wounds on scene. Her body was found by responding reghters with the Midway Fire Department with a large kitchen knife still stuck in one of her eyes. Investigators report the victim died inside her home, near the front door. Blood was found around her body, furniture and smeared on the front door. Reports say her hands suffered defensive wounds, and she had a large cut on her neck. The suspect reportedly ed the scene after the stabbing. Deputies found him about three hours after he left. Deputies say the suspect was staying at a residence nearby where they found his vehicle. Law enforcement ofcers surrounded the home and tried to make contact. Brandon Aydelott surrendered without incident, according to reports. Reports say Brandon Aydelott apparently had dried blood on his wrist or hand, but nothing on his clothing. The suspect was taken to the Santa Rosa County Jail, where he confessed to the murder, according to reports. The investigator wrote the 17-year-old was calm, appeared to be emotionless, other than giving a small smile a few times during the interview. A witness previously told investigators Brandon and his mom had been ghting for a couple of months, saying Brandon had moved out of his mothers home. On Friday morning, Brandon Aydelott remained in custody, held with no bond. EVICTED from page A1Volunteers are encouraged to fade away once their assistance is no longer needed. This keeps emotional bonding from happening between the volunteer and victim. A volunteer is trained to make only one follow-up phone call if needed to help them keep from getting attached, said Batson, although it does happen. Our job is to bridge the gap, although sometimes (victims) do call back, he said. TIP volunteers are always needed. Within Santa Rosa County, Batson said they have 14 people who are available to meet this need. Within the tri-county area there are 35 volunteers. Volunteers are trained with a 10-day course to be certied. He said the classes are offered twice a year with 35 hours of instruction. There is a $30 taxdeductible registration fee required to attend. Once a person becomes a TIP volunteer, they serve three oncall 12-hour shifts. During the shift, the volunteer can go about their business, but once a call comes, they drop what theyre doing and respond. Batson says volunteers come from all walks of life: housewives, retirees, college students. They need to be good listeners, and sympathetic, he said. Call 934-6654 for more information. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, December 28, 2013 BPage 1SectionSpeak Out and prayerI have two subjects Id like to address today. Im going to start with something involving our editorials and Speak Out column. If you are unfamiliar with Speak Out, it can be reached at 6235887. You can call this number anonymously to leave a thought or an idea that we will consider running in the newspaper on our Opinion Page. Most people do leave a rst name, but that is up to the caller. Theres been a growing trend both in the Speak Out calls and in some editorials we are receiving. People are arguing their opinions against speci c people through the newspaper and in some cases there has even been name calling. As editor, I have decisions to make regarding what gets published and what does not. I do not want to be accused of censorship, but the truth is people are repeating themselves and some of these topics have been going on for a month or two. I want to make it clear to those people involved in this particular disagreement and others in the future if you address people by name and insult them Im going to delete your entire call in to Speak Out and your letters to the editor. Prejudice exists in our society. We know that. It comes in many forms toward many different kinds of people. Do you think Ive never been discriminated against because Im a woman? I have. And as a child, we didnt have much in material items. I was bullied by a speci c rich kid when I was a young teen who STILL wont accept my friend request on Facebook. Ive certainly seen it happen to others. Perpetuating that hate through our Speak Out by repeated calls lled with insults and just plain mean comments is over. If you guys really want to talk it over and argue, go meet for a cup of coffee and have at it, but get off the Speak Out line. You are wasting the papers time and your own. Leave Speak Out for new topics and I dunno maybe something POSITIVE. Thats all I want to say about that. The second topic is my own personal Christmas miracle. I told you last edition I began going back to church. I have been dropping prayer requests in the offering bag, as the minister suggests. Ive been asking the church to pray for someone suffering an addiction for ve years. Lives were destroyed over this addiction and I became a crusader for the children who were victims in this battle. I have been praying, the church has been praying and right before my eyes, this person has stopped using drugs. Now, dont be naysayers and tell me hes going to backslide and hes lying and just wait, hell start using again. Ive already been through of all that. What I am telling you is that, in faith, I am actually seeing his clear eyes, better decisions, and a reemerging personality that weve all missed during this period of insanity. Hes funny again, helpful, smiles a lot more, and is not trying to borrow money every ten minutes from everyone he knows. Hes not hanging out with the wrong people. Hes more focused on the right people. Im nding myself in a cautiously optimistic place in time. I have been through the relapse with him so very many times but this time Ive enlisted Gods help. By doing that, I nd I have someone to lean on who can actually change the situation. That leaves me free to believe. I dont have to fret and worry about whether there will be a relapse. I am free to smile and be supportive. Its being handled. LYNNE HOUGHWoman on the Edge TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS! TRAINS!
