Deputy Marshals from Tallahassee, Panama City, Tampa and Pensacola worked with Sheriffs deputies from the ECSO TAC Team and arrested 93 wanted felons in a street-level sweep dubbed as Operation Reindeer Games. The Task Force identied approximately 120 of Escambias more dangerous fugitives who were wanted on various charges including murder, attempted murder, sexual battery, assault, armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, strangulation, possession of rearms and other weapon offenses as well as numerous narcotics violations. At the end of the week, the population of Escambia County Jail swelled as a result of the multi-agency fugitive roundup and others found themselves in local jails in Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties; as well as other parts of Florida and Alabama. Of the 93 criminals who went to jail, 12 fugitives surrendered to jails after learning they were being sought on warrants. They are looking to the public for assistance. Earlier this month, Sheriffs ofcials say they started receiving calls involving burglaries to residential homes. These were primarily in the Pace area of our County, around the Pea Ridge area. During these events, forced entry was made into the homes by breaking windows and or doors. The burglaries were primarily committed during daylight hours, while residents were at work. Items taken ranged from jewelry, guns, and electronics to wrapped Christmas presents. There have been around 12 burglaries, all of the cases of which are open at this time, although ofcials say some may be unrelated to this specic group. More Sheriffs attention has been given to the affected areas by utilizing additional patrols and specialized units. Detectives are also working on several leads at this time. Since these burglaries are during the day, investigators are asking citizens to be more observant to their surroundings. If anyone observes suspicious activity, they are urged to call the Santa Rosa County Sheriffs Ofce immediately at 983-1100.By PAMELA HOLT623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com As children, we were told stories about Goldilocks and the Three Bears with Goldilocks eating the bear familys porridge and sleeping in their beds. In Goodnight Moon, we read about a picture of three bears sitting on chairs. Not to mention Pooh walking about with Piglet and talking about honey pots. However, when theyre rambling through your garbage and moseying about on your patio, they dont seem so friendly. They can be a dangerous nuisance to your family, your pets and themselves. Recent numbers portray an exponential growth in black bear population in Santa Rosa County. After dwindling to as few as 300 bears in the 1970s, the Florida black bear population has bounced back to more than 3,000 bears today. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported a dramatic increase in bear reports for Santa Rosa County. From 10 calls in 2002 to 386 calls in 2012, thats an increase of a 40 fold change. According to the FWC, reports of bear calls by zip code show 72 calls in 2013 in 32583 which covers Avalon-Mulat, East Milton, Garcon Point area and Midway. There were ve reports in Milton, 32570 and one in 32571, Pace. Navarre lists the most reports in the 32566 area listing 167. Santa Rosa County Commissioner Bob Cole said not By PAMELA HOLT623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com Opinions about unrestrained power in the federal government were one focus at the Santa Rosa County Delegation meeting held earlier this week. Florida Representative Doug Broxson, R District 3, Representative Mike Hill, R District 2, and Senator Greg Evers, R District 2 presided over the meeting. Local citizens gathered to converse state issues and legislative priorities. However, three local residents on the agenda, Sam Mullins, Carl Hudgens, and Thomas Rogers, made their case to stop the abuse of power by utilizing Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Article V provides a method by which the States may propose and ratify amendments to the Constitution without approval by the Congress, the President or the Supreme Court. When thirty-four States rst agree to a proposed amendment, and subsequently, thirty-eight of the States authorize the amendment, according to Article V, the modication becomes a part of the Constitution. Senator Greg Evers, R-Baker led a bill SB 480 on December 6, authorizing the Florida Legislature to establish a Commission on Federalism, assessing federal laws and determining whether laws passed in Congress are within the agenda of the Constitution and determining if an evaluated federal law violates the principle of federalism, specifying what sources the commission may rely on in an evaluation of federal law. Regarding the current circumstances within the political affairs of the country, Evers said he agreed with Mullins that the government should not rule from the top, but from the bottom. Mullins said having the people come together to check the power of the federal government will stem the tide. He referenced Senator Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, ling a measure known as a memorial, asking Congress to convene a convention to consider Constitutional amendments to impose restraints on federal spending; setting term limits for members of Congress; and put greater limits on federal powers over the states. Mullins encouraged the delegation to support Evers endeavor in SB 480. He mentioned on December 7 that 100 lawmakers from 32 different states gathered in Mount Vernon, Virginia, to discuss organizing the Article V convention. Thomas Rogers said we are dependant on the strings of the federal government power. He said its time the states take back power and say no to the Locals discuss Article V SpSP ECIa A L TO THE PRESS GaGA ZETTEA bear takes down a bird feeder full of seed. EEXTRaA NNEEDS FOR TTOYS FOR TTOTSFrom Staff ReportsOfcials with Toys for Tots, United Way Santa Rosa say the program has been a great success for Christmas season this year collecting new toys for less fortunate children. People have been generous, said Kyle Holley, United Way. Hundreds of toys were given out on Thursday in Milton. Holley said during the toy drive, theyve found another great need: diapers and non-perishable food items, like canned goods, to re-supply the local food banks. Drop-off points for those items are the United Way Ofce, between McDonalds and Wendys on Hwy. 90 in Milton. And in front of the Pace/Pea Ridge Wal-Mart a U-Haul truck is available for drop off donations or contributions. The truck will be there for several more days, Holley said.By Mari KruegerSpecial to the Press Gazette news@srpressgazette.com The Milton woman behind pedicuresafety.org often nds herself awake in the middle of the night, sleepless from pain caused by a 2010 pedicure mishap that left her feet with permanent nerve damage. Many of the homes built by Chautauqua visitors including the Hall of Brotherhood (1909) are still standing in DeFuniak Springs. Debolt has published and spoken widely on the history of the Florida Chautauqua, as well as the American Chautauqua movement, and how DeFuniak Springs became the cultural center of Florida, propelling the state from the 19th Century into the 20th Century. He is a frequent speaker on topics of West Florida history and genealogical research. The restaurants new front porch features a hog wire fence and inviting rocking chairs for patrons to use while waiting to be seated. The new owners are Mike Thomas and Bob Page. The restaurant was named after Mikes father Grover with the T standing for Thomas. They took over on August 28 of this year. The walls were painted and the oor was sanded and re-stained. Televisions were added in the river room, so named because Mike is a big advocate of canoeing and kayaking. Local artists work is on display throughout, with some of it being for sale. A mural and muck of the artwork was done by Donna Renee, who gave the pig inside a new look with a Floridian shirt done in a paper mache process. The kitchen as been updated with new equipment. Jewel Page, Bobs wife, is in charge of local store marketing. She said Plant it Green did the landscaping out front. There are two new palm trees, one on either end of the building, with azaleas, palmettos, and sea grass planted all along the front porch. Pine straw was used as mulch to keep the weeds down. Grover Ts was completed and opened on Oct. 28. Simon Courtney is the manager at Grover Ts. Congratulations on your new business and for the landscaping. The Milton Garden Club applauds your efforts. The Milton Garden Clubs award to a homeowner in December (Pictured on bottom) goes to Joe and Emily Schulze of 6469 Berryhill Road in Milton. The Schulzes are actually renters. Their son-in-law and daughter, Gary and Ellen Otto of Chicago, bought the house in May as a future retirement home for themselves and are renting it to Joe and Emily because they knew the house would be extremely well taken care of. Joe and Emily moved in on June 1 of this year and have spent most of their efforts on the inside which was in terrible condition. Professional cleaners and painters had to be hired to make the place livable. The inside looks lovely now. The outside has been cleaned up and has hanging ferns on the porch and a Christmas swag on the front door. Along the front are creeping juniper, sago palms, and liriope. Even though Emily is waiting till spring to get out and start planting, they have made such a difference in their neighborhood that one man across the street was inspired to trim his bushes. The Garden Club says thank you to Joe and Emily for caring enough to change the look of your street for the better. The very public execution of Comrade Jang Song Thaek, the uncle of North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un, reminds us of the brutal nature of dynastic power and what totalitarian Communist dictators do. Lil-Kim Jung Un inherited his evil dictating business. Before he died in 2011 his dad, Kim Jung Il, bequeathed the job to his youngest son, passing over Uns older brothers Kim Jung Tito and Kim Jung Jermaine. Per the state-controlled news agency (MS-North Korea), Kim Jung Un had his uncle killed for unwillingly standing up from his seat and halfheartedly clapping when Kim Jung Un was being honored. It came out later that Un felt his Comrade Uncle Jang drank and womanized too much. In American politics, that gets you a plum Senate committee chairmanship; in North Korea it gets you shot. Thats the Dear Leaders job. Jangs wife, the sister of Kim Jung Uns dad, was spared and maintains her role in the Workers Party. Some say she green-lighted the execution, which is always quicker and more conclusive than a divorce. Earlier this year, Lil Kim received special envoy Dennis Rodman to his country. Kims advisors live in such fear they could not bring themselves to tell Un that Rodman was not President Obama. Shortly thereafter, Lil Kim knocked up his girlfriend (I think her name is Kim Kardashi Un), which is not surprising since he had just spent a week hanging out with an NBA player. Uns fatherhood became public when the child was born and it looked like him. But to be fair, all kids born there look like him. Rodman fits the pattern for Un, where the bizarre is the norm. Un did invite Rodman to return to North Korea, hopefully for good, so Rodman can teach the state basketball team what he knows about winning: pass the ball to Michael Jord-Un. In addition, Bill Clinton went to North Korea in 2009. My guess is a city named Pyongyang sounded compelling to him. He did bring back two young women journalists. Imagine that. North Korea has been under communist rule since the 1940s. There is little electricity, free health care (but no one can see a doctor or get medicine), and the government starves its people and tells them what they can eat. It is as if Obama had been running the country for twenty years. Kim Jung Un will have his scientists killed if they cannot figure a way for him to take a bubble bath with his medals on his chest. The Wests willingness to ignore the inhumanity in North Korea has served to embolden its despotic leader. South Korea does not want Un removed from power for fear of having to deal with an influx of 24 million North Korean refugees. Tribalism and faux Communist brotherhood keep China from doing anything, while the U.S. dances a delicate dance with China on human rights. It is like you know your landlord is beating his wife and kids, but you owe him so much back rent you cannot pay that you are afraid to say anything or he will start eviction proceedings. The plight of the people of North Korea under command-and-control rule should be educational to anyone paying attention. Man will always want to control others by any means necessary. It can be done by a Communist dictator or by religious fanatics, like in Iran. It can also be done slowly, via populist politicians who engage in class warfare and give people health care. It never ends well for a country. Embarrassed by its dysfunctional Communist economy, Un said that his country has developed a smart phone. It turns out the phone was built in China and shipped to North Korea. In fact, when you ask the Siri a question, it turns you in to the police. To further control the citizenry, there is no Internet in North Korea. Men actually have to go to strip clubs and buy drinks if they want to see a woman naked. Those concerned about the regulators, czars, ObamaCare and heavy-handed government measures need not worry. Jay Carneys North Korean counterpart said that there was a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers Party of Korea at which Uncle Jang was found guilty of crimes that day, and executed that afternoon. So it sounds like he got a fair hearing. Ron Hart is a syndicated op-ed humorist, author and TV/ radio commentator. What a heartwarming column on your co-workers miraculous recovery after three months hospitalization. And getting off kidney dialysis con rms our awesome God is still performing miracles contrary to what I hear about John McArthurs book, Strange re. God Bless your co-worker, Tracie, the angel whom you mentioned. Her faithfulness in visiting and daily praying for the patient re ects Christs everlasting love and mercy !Tuesday 6 p.m.Hey, this is Dennis. Tonights mega jackpot is $636 million. I wonder how much money was taken in by the lottery agency for this jackpot. I can only guess. 6 to 12 trillion dollars? Whatever the amount which no one tells us. No one tells us. Who gets this excessive amount of money? Im sure some goes to the state and education, but who pockets most of the rest of the money? I wonder. Wed. 1:17 p.m.I say East Milton for the new courthouse. I encourage everyone to call in to the newspaper and call your county commissioner and tell them East Milton. From what I hear most people think East Milton is the only place because of the high number of trips the Sheriffs Department making, taking inmates to and fro. We know that to be a de nite factor of where the courthouse will be. It will save the county money the closer to the jail it is. Anyone else needing to go to the courthouse, let them foot their own bill. Thank you.Wed. 2:04 p.m.This is Joyce. I was at the Redneck Christmas Parade this year and I thought it was wonderful. The man in the paper who states there are too many rebel ags at the parade, remind him they are Confederate ags, not rebel ags, and if he doesnt like it, dont go to Chumuckla, stay away from the parade. The parade has been going on for 18 years and its about time someone does something silly. Editors note: To Jeff about the fence at Hickory Hammock Rd. We are told the fence has been installed to keep wildlife off the highway. It was paid for by the State of Florida, Florida Department of Transportation.By Glenn Mollette A lot of people have given up. My father fell off a barn when I was about thirteen years old. He cracked his vertebrae and missed about six months of work. There was no unemployment insurance, or federal relief money. Everything became very lean as life was put on hold in hopes of better days. By Christmas my father was getting around on crutches. We had a Christmas tree but I dared not ask for anything for Christmas. I knew we didnt have any money. On Christmas Eve we had a family gathering and we had food to eat. There actually was some exchanging of gifts and my mother handed me a small wrapped box. I was shocked. I anticipated nothing. Opening the present I found a simple watch. I would guess it cost eight to ten dollars at the most. It might as well have been a Rolex. I was so surprised and couldnt believe my parents had bought me something for Christmas. I dont know how they did it. A couple of months later my father was back to work and times became better as we hung in there and survived dif cult times. The Christmas gift is stuck in my head as being one of the all time best. The gift was simple but great. Most of us know about a dif cult time in life. Weve all been there in some way. Maybe you are there now. Possibly your heath is not so great and you are hoping for better days. You may be unemployed and you dont know how you are going to pay all the bills. Often life is never exactly as we had hoped or planned. Every year of life is a little different and if you are reading this you still have hope. One of the keys to a better tomorrow is hanging in there today. Its easy to give up. Life can be discouraging. I heard an old preacher say one time, The test of those who love God most are the ones at their post, when all the others have walked away. Today... hang in there and remember what Christmas is about, 1... Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2: 10 11. Glenn Mollette is an American columnist read in all fty states.Where is the bipartisan supportDear Editor, Rep. Van Hollen has partisan support for release of Mr. Gross held in Cuba. His wife, Judy, is courageously ghting for his release every day. Where is the bipartisan support and presidential concern for the release of American pastor Abendini suffering in an Iranian prison? His wife and two little children are courageous too! Theyre awaiting action from our administration silent, uncaring, heretofore! Speaking of Iran, the recent deal Kerry negotiated is a joke! Anyone attempting a nuclear deal with that ungodly nation is foolish! Rouhani and Ahmadinejad before him are bound to execute the Ayatollahs goal, To wipe Israel off the map! Sanctions work, but should not be lifted or altered, period! Thank God, the Living God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is alive and well! He is ready and able to insure Israels existence. He protected Israel at least three signi cant times in history, Hallelujah! Iran is lying, stalling for time and still continuing their development of nuclear capability! God bless us all as only He can.Chrys HolleyMiltonLoves Baby of the WeekDear Editor, A few weeks ago, the Press Gazette was contacted by Robert Wolfe and was informed that the birth announcement of Julia Elizabeth Wolf was never printed. They gather together and talk about the administration, policies, laws, and the rising national debt amongst other issues sharing their perspectives on how to move toward a proactive change. They call the meeting Constitution and Coffee and anyone can come and join in the discussion. On Tuesday evening, I attended the local delegation meeting and to my surprise, I recognized the names of three men of whom I met at the coffee shop on the agenda to speak to the delegates. They each spoke eloquently about a practical avenue to change the current situation within our country, which they refer to as Article V in the Constitution. They also made reference to the Federalist Papers. Without going into the nuts and bolts of Article V, I must say I am very proud of their efforts towards making a change in the country. It is one thing to complain about the circumstances in life, but its another to come forward and do your best to fix it. These men may be biting off more than they can chew, however, at least they are sinking their teeth into the Constitution and saying they want to get back to the way the government was intended to be: by the people and for the people. These men and those they represent, being proactive with their time and efforts, are producers. It takes a fair amount of courage to stand up for what you believe, and take a position regardless of the opposition. My hat is off, fellows. You are patriots. PAMELA HOLTKeeping It SimpleHome town patriots WANTED from page A1ty were included in the sweep: Ausherman, Brandon S.; 22; arrested for violation of probation-burglary, 4 counts; and grand theft auto; and escape. He was arrested on 12/9. Carter, Richard G. In just four days over 120 warrants were served, three rearms seized, over 1000 grams of various drugs and $240 in counterfeit bills were conscated, a stolen car was recovered and three active meth labs were shutdown. This sweep is the latest but not the last one as a part of Sheriff David Morgans objective to crackdown on violent offenders with the help of the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force. The shared goal is to try and help make the people in the community feel safer. The sweep was by in large successful because of the assistance of Special Deputy Marshal Task Force Ofcers from Escambia, Bay, Leon, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton County Sheriffs Ofces, Panama City and Tallahassee Police Departments, Florida Department of Corrections and Special Agents from the ATF and FBI. work. The workshop is full of dolls she found inexpensively at thrift stores. She sanitizes them, washes and dries their hair, places plastic shoes on their feet, and adorns them in gowns and outts. While she works, Howell thinks about the children who will play with the dolls. So far, shes donated more than 600 to the Pensacola Ronald McDonald House. Im helping people in pain, and Im in pain, Jenney said. Thats what got me doing this. What do you do at 4 a.m.? More pain medicine? No, thank you. Then you become a zombie. Jenney was awarded $2 million this fall in a lawsuit against Regal Nails, a salon chain with more than 1,000 stores nationwide. But three and a half years of doctor visits and copayments seeking pain relief had nearly ruined the Howells nancially. Testimony at the trial estimated the cost of her care over the next 19.5 years at $600,000. And the Howells home needs renovations for Jenney to continue to live there, especially once shes forced to use a wheelchair. Thats why pedicuresafety.org so is important to Jenney. She wants people who hear her story to be aware that even a simple pedicure comes with risks. Many people are aware of the risks of staph infection or fungus, but unlabeled chemicals can cause serious risks as well. Be aware of your surroundings and what the chemicals are, Jenney said. I didnt know it was a chemical. I thought it was a lotion. She didnt tell me we were putting a callus remover on. Nobody said, Heres a chemical. Make a decision. Jenneys 2010 pedicure at Regal Nails in Milton in honor of her 44th wedding anniversary left her with stinging, searing pain. That pain, it turned out, would never go away. What shed thought was a lotion was actually an unlabeled, caustic, chemical callus remover. And instead of the recommended 45 seconds, it stayed in contact with her feet for over 25 minutes, then another 20 minutes when her feet were on a towel contaminated with the stuff. The nerve endings in Howells feet were permanently damaged, and she still experiences constant, burning pain. She likened it to running across hot pavement barefoot, with no relief. Rounds of pain medication did nothing to relieve Jenneys pain, and she lay awake night after night, unable to sleep. She visited nearly a half-dozen doctors until Dr. David Fairleigh at the Gulf Coast Pain Institute nally found something that helpeda surgically implanted spinal stimulator. It took away about half her pain, Jenney said, but that relief comes at a cost. The device requires a battery pack implanted in her backside, and it must be surgically replaced every few years. She charges the pack with an external device, and a small remote adjusts the pain relief. She cant drive a car, get an MRI, or go through x-ray machines with the device. I feel like a robot, Jenney said. Ive tried everything known to man, and the only relief I got was from this surgery. Im just trying to live my life now to help others. Just days after the disastrous pedicure, Jenney went to the salon and showed them her blistered, peeling feet. Employees at rst said theyd help her, but eventually she was advised to retain a lawyer. As of press time, Regal Nails attorneys had not returned calls requesting a comment. She was left on an island, in that they had turned their backs on her, said Dan Stewart of Stewart Law Firm, Jenneys attorney. Now theyve won her case, but Jenneys pain is far from over. To get the word out about pedicure safety, Jenney shared her story on Anderson Live in February. Also on the program was an expert witness for Jenneys trial, Dr. Robert Spalding, a podiatrist and author of Death by Pedicure. The amount of money she received from this isnt going to take care of her issues, said Dr. Spalding in a telephone interview from his practice in Chattanooga, Tenn. He described her pain as persistent or intermittent, whether walking or sitting on the couch. The spinal stimulator is necessary for Jenney to walk or put weight on her feet. The decision associated with this is a learning tool for the industry, he said of the trial results. Dr. Spaulding coined the term salon microtrauma for salon-associated issues he saw repeatedly in his clients after pedicures. He said cosmetology schools may teach that as long as theres no blood, theres no harm, but thats simply not the case. Those most at risk are people who are least able to ght off resulting infections, he said, like paraplegics and those suffering from lupus or diabetes. They may have compromised immune systems or lack sensation in their feet to know when theyve been injured. If theyre going to be seen in a salon, they need someone with advanced training, Dr. Spalding said, and recommended asking a physician for salon recommendations or referrals. Dr. Spalding is president of the Medinail Learning Center (MCL), which promotes education and safe and effective nail care practices for nail technicians, podiatry assistants, salon owners and podiatrists (medinail. com). Jenneys case, he said, was a clear lack of communication and training, but unfortunately, he hears salon horror stories on nearly a daily basis. Shes got a lifetime nightmare, he said. Frank Howell, Jenney Howells husband, is a retired principal who spent 22 years working in Escambia County schools. The two met as military brats at NAS Whiting Field. Jenneys father was an ofcer and Franks was enlisted, but despite living on opposite sides of the base, the two managed to fall in love. Now they have two daughters, two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. She puts on a pretty good front, but shes in pain all the time, he said, standing just outside their workshop. Later, it may not be so good. I know whats coming. Its not going to be pleasant. But you know, its sickness and health. We were very pleasantly surprised when the jury did value her life. Thats what the trial came down to. Regal Nails admitted the fault was theirs and initially offered a $100,000 settlement, but the Howells had already spent more than that seeking medical help. They stepped out in faithfaith in God, faith in their attorney, and faith in the jurorsand went to trial. Ill tell you what, without God I couldnt have done any of this, Jenney said. I would like to thank the jurors for being so considerate. The compassion they showed me was remarkably from God. I dont know how to explain it. I was truly given something that would make my life easier. Jenney also pointed out that if Dan Stewart hadnt taken her case, or if she didnt have Franks support, she would have given up long ago. Then, what happened to her might happen to someone elsean unacceptable option for Jenney. Because in the end, Jenney felt the main story wasnt even about her. Though unused to talking about herself, she shared her story to help others. It gives me satisfaction that somewhere, somebody else is getting help, she said. And thats my whole goal: not to criticize, but to make people aware of this chemical. For more information, go to http://pedicuresafety. org/Home.php. PAIN from page A1only is the issue coming up regularly with his constituents, he expects bears to be on the next commission agenda. He also recalls two separate workshops within the last year regarding bear encroachment. He said FWC needs to have a better plan than the current educational presentation. Im tired of the same old song and dance. Give us a solution before a child or even an adult is mauled. The bears are becoming familiar with people, their babies are not foraging. Theyre learning to eat from trash cans and chicken coops, said Cole, We are actively pursuing measures to be taken. Our people need to know this isnt Yogi or Teddy. They are wild animals. Information regarding bear contact offered from FWC points out bears are driven by their need to eat, so anything easily accessible that can be consumed is a potential bear attractant. Also, one can of garbage will surpass calories consumed in one days forage. Educational guidelines from FWC teach the most important step to keep bears away from human population is keeping garbage out of their paws. By doing so, it keeps the animal in the forest foraging instead of pilfering. A bear desensitized to suburbia becomes a bear losing his fear of humans, placing both the bear and people in danger. Without this fear, a bear can become bold and demanding, causing his chances of induction into relocation less likely to be a success if hes captured. Cole agrees with the difculties in relocation and also with the states reluctance to selling tags on bears. He said by lowering the bear population responsibly, it would keep their growth under control. He said, People dont have a problem selling tags for alligators, theyre ugly. Bears look cute and cuddly; but if issuing tags is a solution, it should be looked at. While Cole realizes his stance may be unpopular, he said it may be the only option to be proactive with the population problem. Santa Rosa County growth is not the issue. Our growth pattern throughout the last ten years isnt the issue. The boarders where the bears are coming from were not the areas of booming suburbia. Its a bear population problem. BEARS from page A1monies given to the states with stipulations to federal programs. Hudgens explained later if and when Article V is complete, and thirty-eight states have ratied any or all proposed amendments, those ratied become a part of the constitution and supreme law of the land. He explains if Congress neglects their constitutional duty to cooperate with the process, or acts to obstruct the stipulations of Article V, the Federalist Papers and historical experience declare the political and legal principle that dictates, when the end is prescribed, the means are to be provided. He said should Congress intend to hinder the process, the States may decide to proceed on their own volition and pass the amendments by the standards provided in Article V. Hudgens. He continues to say considering the States hold the power to pass amendments without the approval of Congress, the states also hold the power to create amendments by those same Article V standards, to provide criminal charges for congressional members who obstructed legitimate constitutional provisions. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, December 21, 2013 BSectionJust askIve been working on my relationship with God. Started going to church again on a regular basis. I began taking the grandkids and my young daughter as well. There is something about walking through the lobby of a church and being greeted with smiles and nods that is refreshing. Sometimes when Im there I think Wow, everyone here is nice and welcoming. Yeah, I know. A duh moment. Where else but church would you expect that to be true? Truth be known, it is refreshing. I, personally, have been dealing with a person who has problems that cause him to steal and lie and generally waste his life. It is exhausting to face that person every day. It wears on my mood, at one point it even made me into an angry woman. I was resentful and nothing seemed normal anymore. Addiction does terrible things to a person. Its very clich to hear Just say no. It was a national campaign at one time in an attempt to keep kids off drugs by preventing them from even starting. I think drugs and alcohol sneak up on a person and once they have him/her, the struggle begins. The person using may not be struggling, but everyone around him/her is. Their judgment is off, you cant trust them. Their drug demands their attention or it will hurt them, physically and mentally. So we on the outside nd ourselves scratching our heads and not knowing what to do. Ive been praying a lot for the person in my life who had the addiction. I asked God to reveal Himself to this person, hoping if God can get his attention, he will change and get better. So, an older woman we all know had a heart attack a week ago. She was at Sacred Heart Hospital, in surgery. Something miraculous happened. I got my information secondhand, from the addicted person in my life. He called me to tell me the story. This lady who had the heart attack was in surgery. She had a blockage. The surgeon made an incision in her arm, into the artery to do the procedure, and the blood clot in this womans body, right in front of the doctor, passed into her heart, back out, through her body and ew out of the artery that was cut. It ew across the room. Projectile. The doctor told her family it had to be God because he had never, ever seen anything like that before and never heard of it. The lady is ne and home, recovering. I told the addicted person Id been praying for him and maybe this was Gods way of letting him know He is there. I was told, I know Hes there. So I told him it might be a good time to ask God for help in his life. He told me, I think Ill give him a rest rst, after this, referring to the heart attack healing. I laughed and told him, Hes been waiting to hear from you. He can handle it. I hate to say it, but I often wait until I have no other answers, THEN I ask God for help. He really wants to hear from me rst, not last. I am nothing without HIM. People can argue and say there is no God. But I know there is and that my life is much better when Im in sync with Him. There have been two other healings of people in my life. Our co-worker who was hospitalized for three months is off the respirator, dialysis, and is out of the hospital after we were told shed never leave. The other is my aunt whose body was lled with cancerous tumors a few weeks ago, but after prayer, they were all gone. Church is not for everyone. But God is. Pray from where you sit, even if it is to just say, Help. Hes listening. Such a rivalry is fun as well as productive in the development of young adults to develop the skills to perform at their best level, accept defeat and handle victory humbly. Both Pace and Milton always put forth their best effort when they compete against their nearest and biggest rival. Pace and Milton played a close battle on the court at Pace. Pace defeated Milton by four points, 43-39. When the half-time buzzer sounded and both squads went to the locker room, the score was 23-17 Pace. At the start of the fourth quarter, Pace had even widened the margin to 39-23. However, the fourth quarter saw Milton regroup and outscore the Patriots by 10 points. The Panthers had a fourth-quarter scoring rally of 14 points, and Pace nished the quarter scoring 4 points. The fourth-quarter Patriot performance, however, had enough edge to keep Pace on top to win. Paces Simmons led the night for both teams with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Basketball wasnt really an option for Central junior Zac Wright; when it is in your blood, it is automatic to pick up a basketball and learn to dribble, pass and shoot. Zac, the son of Eddie and Keristen Wright, was born hearing the magical sound a basketball makes when it bounces on a true hardwood court. My Dad and my Mom both played basketball in high school, he said. Both parents have stayed involved in basketball with their three sons, coaching youth basketball leagues and high school squads. Basketball provides stress relief for me; I enjoy it, Wright said. When I am on the court, it feels as though I am just playing a game. I forget that there are people there watching me. I am just out there playing the game. Wright, a junior at Central High School, is involved in the schools student organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes, plays basketball for the Jaguars and participates in a Pensacola-based travel basketball team, The Pensacola Elite. Wright is considering playing baseball for the Jaguars this spring; however, it is a dif cult personal decision for a young man who is used to having the much larger diameter basketball in his hands on a daily basis. This season, Wright accomplished an achievement that places him in the club by scoring his 1,000th career point. He was unaware of what he had done until the day after the game. Coach (Tony) McDonald told me the next day after the game, he said. It means a lot to me but I am fully aware that I am part of a team that I cant play without. Central Coach McDonald has watched Wright develop and grow. He has played varsity for me now for his third season, McDonald said. Wright will probably nish his career at Central High being in the top ve all-time career scorers. McDonald shared about the differences one must consider when truly evaluating career records; many years ago, the average basketball season was 32 games. Now the season has been reduced to 25 regular season games, which re ects a huge difference in comparing records from past years versus current results. Wright gives a lot of credit to those who have inspired his play, his parents and Coach George Norton. Coach Norton is the real deal, he said. He coached both my parents, and he knows a lot about basketball. He is such a great Christian role model, a leader and knows way more than I do about the game. Wright talks openly about his game, sharing that he sometimes has dif culty keeping a level head when he is in a tough situation. I care so much about the game that I just get mad at myself when I dont play as good as I should, he said. I want my basketball skills to get me into college and I would really love to make money playing basketball one day. Wright said he would love to win the district championship this season and knows what he and his team need to do to achieve that. I need to improve during pressure situations, and with my ball handling, he said. As a team, Central competes in a very tough district with competition from Paxton, Laurel Hill and Malone high schools. The Jaguars are also challenged because of the age and experience of the players on their team; they do not have any seniors on their roster. However, next season, there will be ve seniors on the court for Coach McDonald, ve who have played together for many seasons. It is going to be emotional, Wright said. We have all played together forever. It will also been an emotional experience for Coach McDonald as he continues to produce quality athletes who reset school records and who, as in Wrights case, join an elite group of athletes who had the amazing ability to put the ball in the hoop time after time. As Wright talks about his love of the game and for his school, he giggles as he thinks back to some games that really made him proud to be a basketball player, We beat Bethlehem two years for our homecoming game and once at theirs. I am so proud of that, and winning at homecoming. Wright will have the opportunity to participate in one more homecoming game his senior season, and he will have the opportunity to place his name in the record books of Central High School.By BECKY BONDURANTSpecial to the Press Gazette beckysrpgsports@yahoo.com The only thing that could clearly identify the areas best football seniors representing high schools from Northwest Florida was the helmet on each individuals head. The best of the West and the best of the East combined for the annual Subway All-Star Football Game. The West defeated the East, but not before memories were created for both teams, new friendships formed and even some past individual rivalry calmed. They all had one goal as they united for practice and then to play in the Pace High School Football Stadium for their family, friends and potential colleges. Each team, East and West, wanted the distinction to not only play during the allstar game but to be able to boast that they had played for the side that won. The East team practiced at Navarre High School, and practice for the West was at Pensacola High School. Seniors from Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties were divided and placed on a team depending on their high schools regional location. This traditional game has become very popular among all high school sports seniors. It is fun, relaxing and provides one last potential dream for each participating athlete. That potential is the opportunity to really compare ones athletic abilities to another side by side during the numerous practices held to bond the rival schools into one team, to become acquainted with opponents that you have competed against and to display talents for college scouts. Several area standout football players chose not to participate in the allstar game. They are multiple sport athletes and remained devoted to their winter sport, basketball. Their winter sports squads had games that con icted with the all-star game. The West won 28-18. The West took the early lead 212 but saw the East battle back and made it an exciting football game. The MVPs for the East squad were offense, Garrison Floyd from Choctaw and defense Thomas Forte also from Choctaw. West Squad MVPS were Offensive, Tay Samuel from Tate High School and defensive, Rocell McWilliams from West Florida. Representing Milton High School: Curtis Busby, defensive line. Drew Manning, safety. Corliss Waitman, kicker. Michael Hicks, defensive and offensive tackle. From Pace High School: Tyson Kee, cornerback/wide receiver. Austin Harris, guard-defensive tackle. Shayne Crawford, tight end-defensive tackle. Jay High School: Tate Upton, quarterback-defensive back. Ashton Dennington, wide receiver, Brandon Boutwell, outside linebacker.
