On Feb. 15, 1952 the Illinois National Guard was activated and was deployed to Camp Cook, Calif. Since I was a professional painter, I was giving the job of resurfacing the Mess Halls dining room tables. One person on my detail was from Mt. Vernon, and since I had no ones address to write to, he gave me a list of names and addresses of girls he knew. One of the names was Georgia Ards. I continued corresponding to Georgia while I was at Camp Cook, Calif. I was given two weeks leave before being shipped to Korea. While on leave I called Georgia, to meet the girl I was corresponding to. I made a date with her to meet her. We spent the evening at a drive-in movie. I asked Georgia for another date and she accepted. While on this date with Georgia, I asked her if she would marry me. To my surprise Georgia accepted my proposal. I gave Georgia an engagement ring and we both agreed to wait until I returned from Korea before getting married. I returned on Sept. 18, 1953. I picked Nov. 1953 for the wedding and Georgia picked the 22 of November for the day of the wedding. I guess you could call this a whirlwind engagement and wedding. Our rst child was a boy. We named him Marlin II. He was born on June 20, 1955. Three more children were added to our family: Steven L. born Nov. 18, 1957; LaJaunti D. (Bracken) Lowery (divorced) born on July 13, 1962; and Lisa D (Bracken) Schoeld, born on Dec. 13, 1963. Both girls were born on Friday the 13th. BREATHE EASIER By PAMELA HOLT850-623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com As of Nov. 18, the East Gate hours of operation at Naval Air Station Whiting Field have been reduced to 5-8 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gates will no longer be open on weekends or holidays. According to Jay Cope public affairs specialist, the hours of operation of the gate will remain until further notice. I understand this is inconvenient for a lot of people. This isnt a choice anyone wanted to make, but in the current operational and nancial environment, we need to be prepared to sacrice some of the conveniences we took for granted. The hours of operation were chosen based on the times of greatest usage to limit the impact as much as possible, said Capt. Matthew Coughlin, NAS Whiting Field commanding ofcer. NAS Whiting Field houses around 3,000 personnel, any given day, counting active duty, reservist and contract personnel. PAMELA HOLT | Press GazetteNAS Whiting Field is reducing hours at the East Gate. Whiting reducing gate hours By: PAMELA HOLT850-623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com Are you sure you can eat that? Diabetics hear this question from the person watching them ll their plate and also inside of their head when no one is around. So what is diabetes and how does awareness help? In simple terms, diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, none at all, or cells are desensitized and no longer responding to insulin the body produces. Because so many Americans have diabetes in some form (pre-diabetes, gestational, type 1, type 1.5 or type 2), everyone knows someone close to them who is dealing with the disease. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the disease effects 25.8 million children and adults within the US; 8.3% of the population. There were 1.9 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older in 2010. Diabetes is a well known disease. Ofcials say education in key. However, the ADA says myths are still oating around:MMyth 1Eating too much sugar can make you a diabetic. Fact: This is simply not true, according to Halee Heath RD, LD, clinical nutrition manager at Santa Rosa Medical Center. She says if you have a healthy pancreas, it will do its job. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics, and other unknown reasons; type 2 is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors. If you have the genetic pre-disposition for type 2, your doctor may give you pointers for changing your lifestyle to stop progression, such as limit or stop drinking soda or sugary drinks, and increase exercise.MMyth 2 Diabetics cant have sweets. Fact: If eaten with a healthy meal plan with exercise, sugar can be consumed by people with diabetes. Heath says education always comes into play when learning about a healthy meal plan. We (at SRMC) never say a diabetic cannot have any type of food. We teach how to budget your meal plan. Whereas you can have a half of a candy bar or a piece of cake if you want, says Heath. MMyth 3 Eating a piece of meat is the same as eating a piece of bread. Fact: Each food group affects the body differently. Heath says education about how digestion works is very important to a person with diabetes so they know if a type of food will change their blood sugar. Peanut butter is an excellent example. Some patients think peanut butter will raise their blood sugar. It cant. Its a protein. If they eat it with chocolate or on a cracker, its the carbohydrate accompanying the peanut butter thats the culprit, says Heath.November is Diabetes Awareness Month United Way of Escambia County is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). LocalSanta Rosas Press Gazette| A5Saturday, November 23, 2013 By PAMELA HOLT850-623-2120 pholt@srpressgazette.com A tentative deal struck Nov. 13 between the Santa Rosa County School Board and the Santa Rosa Professional Educators includes a 3.6995 percent pay raise for teachers and $800 for support personnel, said Santa Rosa County Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick. Wyrosdick said once the union approves the agreement and the final vote at the Dec. 14 school board meeting, teachers and support personnel will see an increase in their pay by February. The cause of delay, he said, is that the change in financial statements is not computerized but is a hands-on process. Rhonda Chavers, Santa Rosa Professional Educators chief negotiator, said the previous negotiating sessions were difficult. Mostly, the negotiations were about the rightful division and intent of the governors posed teacher allocation funds an additional $4.234 million given to Santa Rosa County district. Chavers said the SRPE worked to get the best settlement, given the districts dire financial and fiscal management appearances. She said the SRPE was misled at the table about the pay delay, and the district representative (Steve Ratliff) on several occasions reminded us that we should consider settling in time for the salary increases to be distributed in the December checks. We discussed at length last Wednesday that we would pull together the information and institute the vote prior to Thanksgiving holidays in order to give payroll time (10 days) to make the necessary adjustments to reflect the increase on the December check distributions. Wyrosdick said hes excited to reward employees selfless service to the children of Santa Rosa County. He said education across the board has obstacles that arent just financial right now, including the upcoming Florida Common Core state standards February implementation. He said he agrees with parents and individuals concern in the increasing amount of government interference at both the state and federal level. We need to make (educational) decisions locally, he said. There are numerous occasions where this has happened. At the heart of common core is a rigorous set of standards to require our students to think critically before college and career, Wyrosdick said. It is also important to know what our businesses are demanding in the workforce. He said critical thinking, working with a group, gathering amalgamate information over different subject areas, and leading a project are what industry is looking for in capable employees. Up until now, he said, students have suffered in this area by having to choose a, b, c, or d. He said the meticulous effort in common core will bring our students toward the goal of critical thinking skills that were lost over time. Wyrosdick said these standards are good for student. If you want local control and your local school system says these standards are good, lets move on.Teacher pay raises tentatively approved; nal vote Dec. 14 TIM WYROSDICKSanta Rosa County Superintendent PENSACOLA TIDESSS aturday: 12:36 a.m. high tide 1.32 feet, 6:21 a.m. sunrise, 10:45 a.m. moonset, 11:53 a.m. low tide -0.05 feet, 4:48 p.m. sunset, 10:07 p.m. moonriseSS unday: 12:59 a.m. high tide 1.18 feet, 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 11:21 a.m. moonset, 12:08 p.m. low tide 0.04 feet, 4:48 p.m. sunset, 11:00 p.m. moonriseMM onday: 1:04 a.m. high tide 1.00 feet, 6:23 a.m. sunrise, 11:55 a.m. moonset, 12:15 p.m. low tide 0.16 feet, 1:29 p.m. 3rd quarter moon, 4:48 p.m. sunset, 10:29 p.m. high tide 0.83 feet, 11:54 p.m. moonriseTuesday: 6:24 a.m. sunrise, 12:04 p.m. low tide 0.29 feet, 12:29 p.m. moonset, 4:48 p.m. sunset, 8:26 p.m. high tide 0.82 feet, Wednesday: 12:49 a.m. moonrise, 6:24 a.m. sunrise, 11:17 a.m. low tide 0.39 feet, 1:04 p.m. moonset, 4:48 p.m. sunset, 7:45 p.m. high tide 0.93 feetNN AVARRE BEACH TIDESSS aturday: 6:20 a.m. sunrise, 9:10 a.m. low tide 0.24 feet, 10:44 a.m. moonset, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:06 p.m. moonrise, 10:58 p.m. high tide 1.31 feetSS unday: 6:20 a.m. sunrise, 9:27 a.m. low tide 0.36 feet, 11:20 a.m. moonset, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:59 p.m. moonrise, 11:21 p.m. high tide 1.19 feetMM onday: 6:21 a.m. sunrise, 9:30 a.m. low tide 0.48 feet, 11:54 a.m. moonset, 1:29 p.m. 3rd Quarter moon, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 11:06 p.m. high tide 1.04 feet, 11:52 p.m. moonriseTuesday: 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 9:25 a.m. low tide 0.59 feet, 12:28 p.m. moonset, 4:46 p.m. sunset, 6:05 p.m. high tide 1.04 feet, Wednesday: 12:47 a.m. moonrise, 6:23 a.m. sunrise, 9:14 a.m. low tide 0.67 feet, 1:02 p.m. moonset, 4:46 p.m. sunset, 5:40 p.m. high tide 1.17 feetEE ASt T BAY TIDESSS aturday: 1:19 a.m. high tide 1.58 feet, 6:20 a.m. sunrise, 10:44 a.m. moonset, 1:09 p.m. low tide -0.06 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:06 p.m. moonriseSS unday: 1:42 a.m. high tide 1.41 feet, 6:21 a.m. sunrise, 11:20 a.m. moonset, 1:26 p.m. low tide 0.05 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:59 p.m. moonriseMM onday: 1:47 a.m. high tide 1.20 feet, 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 11:54 a.m. moonset, 1:29 p.m. 3rd Quarter moon, 1:31 p.m. low tide 0.19 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 11:12 p.m. high tide 0.99 feet, 11:52 p.m. moonriseTuesday: 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 12:28 p.m. moonset, 1:22 p.m. low tide 0.35 feet, 4:46 p.m. sunset, 9:09 p.m. high tide 0.99 feetWednesday: 12:47 a.m. moonrise, 6:23 a.m. sunrise, 12:35 p.m. low tide 0.47 feet, 1:03 p.m. moonset, 4:46 p.m. sunset, 8:30 p.m. high tide 1.11 feetBLACKw W At T ER TIDESSS aturday: 2:15 a.m. high tide 1.58 feet, 6:21 a.m. sunrise, 10:45 a.m. moonset, 1:39 p.m. low tide -0.06 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:06 p.m. moonriseSS unday: 2:38 a.m. high tide 1.41 feet, 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 11:21 a.m. moonset, 1:56 p.m. low tide 0.05 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:59 p.m. moonriseMM onday: 2:43 a.m. high tide 1.20 feet, 6:22 a.m. sunrise, 11:55 a.m. moonset, 1:29 p.m. 3rd Quarter moon, 2:01 p.m. low tide 0.19 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 11:53 p.m. moonriseTuesday: 12:08 a.m. high tide 0.99 feet, 6:23 a.m. sunrise, 12:29 p.m. moonset, 1:52 p.m. low tide 0.35 feet, 4:47 p.m. sunset, 10:05 p.m. high tide 0.99 feetWednesday: 12:48 a.m. moonrise, 6:24 a.m. sunrise, 1:03 p.m. moonset, 1:05 p.m. low tide 0.47 feet, 4:46 p.m. sunset, 9:26 p.m. high tide 1.11 feet Tide RREpPORt TPace High School Band, and personal coolers will be allowed. Yes I have smoked crack cocaine It was probably when I was in one of my drunken stupors a bold admission from Torontos Mayor Rob Ford, the most straightforward politician in the business of politics today. Its too bad Chris Farley is not around to play him in the movie. What he is saying is: Media get it right. I am not a coke head I am just a pass out/blackout drunk. Nothing to see here, keep moving. What happens in a drunken stupor, stays in a drunken stupor. We all know that. What part of drunken stupor dont you understand? This is such a toxic political scandal that Obama has already denied knowing anything about it. Clearly Rob Ford, like most politicians, is a camera-craving narcissist. He is one of the few world leaders who feels our NSA does not watch him enough. But he has not harmed anyone except himself. In fact, Mayor Fords actions while smoking crack have been less damaging than what Obama has done to us while stone cold sober. ObamaCare was a fraud, sold to the American people by lying. It will cost millions of families their health insurance, and others will be forced to pay more if they can get their old insurance back. Bernie Madoff did not damage as many people with his fraud as Obama has. At least Mayor Rob Ford cut costs for taxpayers in his city, reversing years of overspending. He apparently has gotten some crack cocaine off the streetsand into his body. If Canada had an ill-conceived war on drugs, as we do in the U.S., hed probably ght for Colombia. Ford has issues. But to be fair, after a long day, stuffed into his suit, apologizing, ribbon cutting and presenting visiting movie stars with the Kilo to the City, who wouldnt like to unwind with some crack cocaine while in a drunken stupor? The Mayor admits that his behavior is embarrassing, but no one goes to prison for being an embarrassment. Otherwise, Joe Biden would currently be serving three to ve years in jail. Hollywood and the NY media elite do not view cocaine use as much of a problem; rather, its more of a networking opportunity. They downplayed allegations that Obama sold cocaine in college. I viewed it as a positive; at least it means he had some business experience. If Obama sold drugs, its safe to say it was not via a website he designed. Obama has correctly asked his DOJ to reduce jail time for crack convictions. Federal prisons are lled with minor drug offenders, and Illinois jails are lled with ex-governors. The biggest threat to Mayor Fords health is that he overeats. After a long day of apologizing, he devoured 4000 calories of food in one meal at a local eatery. Even more troubling, the bus boy is missing. Doesnt crack cocaine make one thinner? He must cut his cocaine with Canadian bacon. By all accounts, the rotund Rob Ford is a good man to have on your side politically (but not in a small canoe). On Monday, the Toronto City Council stripped Ford of most of his powers. Those are two visually troubling words you dont like to hear together: Ford and stripped. If you can be accused of crude language, sexual innuendo, pill-popping, drinking at work, and bringing a hooker to an of ce St. Patricks Day party and still cut taxes and fees, then kudos to you. Id vote for Charlie Sheen if he would balance the budget and reduce the role of government in our lives. Fords popularity increased during these scandals. People seem to like candor, lower taxes and fewer regulations. Rob Ford has done a good scal job of making government less costly. People will look beyond some boorish personal behavior; in some small way, this explains why Chris Christie is popular. Contrast him with our president, a debonair huckster, a nely tailored empty suit who always blames others. Obama raises taxes, wastes our money and incompetently manages our bloated government. He has already sealed Fords fate by telling the people of Toronto, If you like your mayor, you can keep your mayor period. So its just a matter of weeks until Ford is replaced with a more expensive mayor of Obamas choosing that no one likes or wants. The only sensible location is at present location of the old one. I recall back in the thirties, and forties downtown Milton was at its peak. Any, and everything a person wanted to buy (if you could scrape up the few dollars it cost) was available in downtown City of Milton.. We love the convenience of paring paces at the front door of the building we enter; we are a busy, busy people, too busy for our own good! With the many convenient Branch Of ces in the County, there is no need to build a huge courthouse, but a complete one with large courtroom, and all of ces, that pertain to business of serving the citizens of Santa Rosa County ef ciently.. A drive through window like most banks have these days would be extra nice (If possible). The courthouse down town Milton, is the only thing I believe will prevent it from becoming a ghost town. Those of us, who love our little town, dont want that to happen!Sincerely,Marion Cumbie Dear Editor, Attention Mr. Johns: First of all you have every right to voice your opinion on any subject you choose. This is America! Second, you appear to be a very angry man because you feel that because of your color/ race/gender you have been discriminated against by almost every profession imaginable. That is very hard to believe! Youve mentioned bankers, mortgage institutions, airlines, railroads, ships, the court system, the post of ce or wherever you got your passport from, colleges, printers, cable TV, whoever grants food stamps, insurance companies, the federal government, churches, judges, lawyers, teachers, store owners, and job owners. Are you telling all of us that you have been discriminated against by all these institutions and the reason was of your race/color or gender and I quote, most of the times, have to be dealt with a white person and not all white people have a heart for people of color. Last time I checked a color chart, white was a color! If so, you may want to seriously look in a mirror and do a self examination! It may not be entirely their fault. Your article reminds of me of a divorcee that has been married and divorced several times and each time it was the spouses fault. They never took part of blame for anything, it was always someone else. They also believe for some strange reason that they deserve better, whether they worked at the marriage or not. To your knowledge, are there any books in print today that make jokes about People of Color? Probably not going to nd any because that would be discriminating. However as a child and even into my adult years, books have been published making fun of Polish, Irish, Blondes, and Italians indicating they were stupid or drunks or dirty and I dont remember anyone every getting upset with those books or jokes. Race my friend is a two way street ... and we, as humans can hate each other or we can learn to just get along. There will always be those to dislike people for their color, gender, ethnicity, weight, hair color, eye color or being bald and that sir is a fact, however I believe that those are a small group of people. In my opinion your article does nothing to bring people together, instead it drives the wedge deeper and causes nothing but hurt and discontent. Based on your article Im going to assume that all this discrimination was here in West Florida ... if this is the case maybe you should nd somewhere else to live, where you can be happy.Respectfully submitted,Michael Sheftz Pace Florida GUEST EDITORIALLooking past ThanksgivingBy Glenn Mollette The rst Thanksgiving was surrounded by lifes hardships. The early settlers were bombarded with extreme weather, hunger, sickness and death. Those who had survived believed the best they could do was to stop and give thanks. Too many throughout America are looking past Thanksgiving. Either we dont want to think about it or we are looking to black Friday, Christmas or just trying to get through the year. The aggravations of the world often drive us to feeling beaten down and we become bitter and resentful instead of thankful. When we live with gratitude our lives are more peaceful. Gratitude is a great stress reliever because we are looking to God and thanking Him. A thankful life is a healthy life emotionally and physically. In Gratitude we focus on the positive instead of the negative. We focus on the giver of life and not everything that is wrong with life. How well we know that life is lled with suffering. Tornadoes destroyed towns throughout the Midwest last week. Thousands of people were devastated. One evening news sound bite was a woman in tears saying that she and her husband lost everything but they clung to each other because they still had each other. In the middle of losing everything they were grateful for each other. The Philippines were almost wiped off the map because of the most horri c typhoon ever recorded. Those people are suffering. We dont want pain and suffering. Yet, its almost impossible to live very long without experiencing both. A man in the Bible by the name of Job lost everything. He lost his children, his entire wealth and his health. Job suffered and lost everything. His wife told him to curse God and die. Job looked to his creator in spite of circumstances. He never lost his sense of gratitude toward God even in the blackest hours of his life. He said, Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him, Job 13:15. In his last years of life Job ended up with more than ever before. Gratitude was the beginning step to a new life for Job. You may not feel life is going your way. Stop and give thanks. Giving thanks is often the rst step to better days. Glenn Mollette is an American columnist read in all fty states.Wednesday 12:17 p.m.This is Jim in Milton. Dr. Herb Sadler, blesses us again by preaching this Sunday, at our 10 a.m. service. Be sure to bring your family and friends to hear a very important message. Come and share good food and fellowship at the cafe, before the service at 9 a.m. The sermon, titled Love Like Youve Never Loved Before! is based on Matthew 22:35-40 Wherever I travel, it is always so sweet to return home. The following Sunday, Dec. 1, is Advent Sunday, and I return home to preach. My heart is lifted at the thought of coming home to Bagdad United Methodist Church, after a long journey. Advent prepares our hearts and lives, for the coming of our Lord Jesus, as a poor, third world baby, and as the Son of God, our Savior; to enable us to live abundant lives on earth and glorious lives in eternity. We shall sing wonderful Advent and Christmas carols together. We shall share in Holy Communion, as the Lord graciously comes to us, in the Sacrament. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, the Waterfront Rescue Mission (WRM) will be selling meal tickets to give local area citizens an opportunity to give for those who have no home in which to lay their head. Meal tickets are available for donations at the WRM Bargain Center. James Robbins, retail services director for Waterfront Rescue Mission, said its hard to believe but people dont seem to know there is more to the Waterfront Rescue Missions Bargain Center. He says people come in and browse the store or give donations but when asked, theyre surprised to nd out we feed and shelter homeless people. We serve 800-1,000 daily meals at our three campuses every year. We have 250 graduations per year and have an 18-month to threeyear recovery program. Fifty percent of funding for the Mission is provided by the WRM and the recycling ministries, Robbins said. There is no single answer or an easy explanation that leads a person to homelessness, Robbins said. Factors include mental illness, drug or other substance abuse, divorce, nancial hardship, loss of job or reduction of hours and bene ts, personal or family tragedy. Wasnt it John Bradford who said, There but the grace of God, go I? In 2012 WRM served more than 243,000 meals; provided 87,000 nights of shelter including respite care; provided 9,500 hours of individual counseling; provided countless articles of clothing and furniture; provided job skills and educational opportunities at Pensacola State College and George Stone Center. Meal ticket for the holidaysCurrently, Christmas tree displays of Waterfront Rescue Missions meal tickets are located at the Village Inn in Pace, Drowsy Poet Coffee Break Cafe in Pace, Milton First Assembly of God, WRM Bargain Centers in Milton, Gulf Breeze, Cantonment, Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola and Foley and the Apple Market Grocery in Pensacola. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, November 23, 2013 BSectionBlowin in the windMy hometown of Kokomo, Indiana, was hit by two F2 tornadoes on Sunday. News reports in Kokomo say 60 homes were destroyed, 20-30 businesses, and 32 people were injured and only ve were hospitalized. Thank God. When I was ve, the Palm Sunday tornadoes came through Kokomo. (Google it.) Residents there are saying the damage compares to the 1965 tornadoes. Thanks to Facebook, Im in touch with childhood friends and my dads family who still live there or close by near Sharpsville. Everyone is okay, but wow. My mother is here in Milton now and Ive had a more of a chance to ask her questions about my childhood. Ive asked her to con rm things I remember. So far, Im spot-on with my memories. We talked about the tornado and though I recall my dad going out into the pre-tornado storms in 1965 to get baseball-size hail, Mom says the biggest tornado passed just blocks from our home and we slept through it. I nd that shocking. Im very weather-conscious these days and have my cell phone set up to alert me if bad weather comes close to my home. One problem I have with childhood memories is knowing how long we lived in a certain area or a speci c house. I can remember a lot happening at the house on Webster St. where the tornado passed near. It was at that house I learned to tie my shoes. I also burned my hand on a hot baking pan. I hid my green beans in my shoe at the dinner table so I wouldnt have to eat them. Mom just told someone that story the other day. I never did like wearing shoes, but I do like green beans now. My dad popped corn the oldfashioned way in that house you know, on the stove with oil in a pan. He was testing the rst kernel and he raised the lid. The corn popped, ew in the air and came down into the front of my shirt. I laugh now. I mean, what are the chances? Mom said she still feels bad about that. Its OK, Mom. I also fell on the back step and busted my chin open. Mom just told me the other day that my chin popped open. It wasnt cut. It split. Yuck. I remember the doctors stitching my chin shut, and how afraid I was. Giant lights and someone holding my arms down. As a result of that memory, I have avoided stitches for my children. When my second son fell in the tub, he was two at the time, and busted his chin open, I put a butter y band-aid on it and rocked him until he stopped crying. No stitches. Of course, when my youngest son ran a go cart into the back of a parked cement truck and only saved himself from decapitation by putting his hand out and trying to duck, he split his chin open. That one required several stitches and an x-ray of his arm. Not broken. I didnt know he was on a go cart until he called and said, Um, Mom, I think I need to go to the hospital. Thirteenyear-old boys rarely say those words, so I responded in haste and then almost fainted when they stuck a needle in his chin at the emergency room. Im at the end of my column today and I cant leave without saying, My daughter will be home from Africa tonight! (Saturday) If you should run into us while she is in town, out to lunch or running around, dont mention that Ive been writing about her in my column. She hates that. By MARI KRUEGERSpecial to the Press Gazette news@srpressgazette.com Dingaling dingaling! The triangle was three-year-old Josiah Valarezos rst choice at his Kindermusik class. His mom, Melissa, held it while he rang it gently. Melissa kept time, tapping a wooden block. Working with my kid instead of sending him off to something was very intriguing, and watching him grow and interact at home now is really interesting, Melissa said. Hell nd beats in music or on TV shows. It really sticks with him. The focus of the weeks class was trains. A handful of kids and their parents practiced varying tempos like a train mightchugga chugga chugga chugga Fast! Slow! Fast! Slow!listened to train whistles, had story time about trains, even passed through a teacher-tunnel as they pretended to be trains. Kindermusik is a musical learning program for children that started in 1978. The curriculum is geared toward every aspect of development: reading, quantitative spatial and temporal reasoning, social, physical and creative development. It couches all that in music, said Jana Ellis, who teaches the class along with Monica Hatch. Every class is based on the development of kids at certain ages. Its geared toward reaching your whole child. Im coming at it from an education background. The educator in me is going, Yeah, this is a good thing! Ellis, a Milton native, taught in the Santa Rosa County school district for 10 years before home schooling her daughters. Hatch and Ellis rst discussed the idea of bringing Kindermusik to the Pace/Milton area around the New Year, while the two were shopping together. They began their certi cation course in the spring and nished in June. Its been a real blessing so far to get to know the families we have, and see them growing in con dence with their young children especially, because some of them are brand-new moms, Ellis said. I just see the wonderful changes in my heart as I interact with these families, and I am so blessed by it. Im really enjoying it. A typical class begins with a welcome song. Kids use instruments to explore different parts of music, like tempo or volume, and the group sings together. After story time, calm music encourages snuggling before more games. The class alternates activity with focus, ending with a goodbye song. Then I usually give everyone a stamp, because I cant let them leave without knowing how wonderful they are! Ellis laughed. For Hatch, her passion lies with babies. More than anything, she wants to encourage new parents that everythings going to be ne, and give them tools to bond with their babies that she found useful with her own children. When I was a young parent and I had a young baby, I didnt know what to do with my baby. Kindermusik gave me those tools. It helped me bond, really, with my baby, and thats what I want to share, Hatch said. Im seeing a lot of parents dont realize the impact they can make as a parent, doing the activities we do in class. Theyll start to see a change in their child, how they react, how they respond. Hatchs step mom has 16 years of Kindermusik experience and has a thriving music program in Houston, Texas. Hatch loved taking the classes with her own children. Even babies can bene t by having their ne muscles tuned, Hatch explained, and they listen better because they have learned how to listen. As for Ellis, shes seen in her own home how musical instruction can improve learning in other areas like math, science and literature. She watches her children recognize complex patterns, ebb and ow. What I see in the future with this is, children growing in every way and just having been a small part of that, she said. We really believe in this program. I really feel like this is something that is so bene cial for families. It gives them a chance to play and bond. Were trying to look at this as a way to minister to families, and use this as a way to just love on families in our city. Kindermusik meets Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at First United Methodist Church at Chumuckla Highway and Church St. Hatchs Wiggle; Grow class for 2and 3-year-olds is 9:30 a.m. Tuesday; and Ellis Laugh and Learn class for ages infant to 7 is 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays.
