CORRECTIONA photo and caption published on Nov. 13 in the Press Gazette contained incorrect information. The Veterans Thunder Poker Ride on Saturday, Nov. 9, was not sponsored by AMVETS Post 1292 as stated. The ride for the past three years has been coordinated and sponsored by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, a group of veri ed combat motorcycle enthusiasts that are organized under a 501(c) to support veterans causes. Almost $1,500 was raised to support the Vets Rides to Clinic program, according to organizers. We apologize for the error. Special to the Press GazetteA kidnapped teenage girl was rescued after cops with the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force kicked in the door of a residence on Dogwood Drive on Tuesday night. Phillip Thomas Nussey was taken into custody after a multi-state hunt. Of cials with the Task Force say they captured Nussey who is being sought by law enforcement in Arkansas for kidnapping a teenage girl who is believed to be his niece. Late Tuesday evening the U.S. Marshals in El Dorado, Arkansas contacted the Marshals Task Force in Pensacola requesting their help in locating fugitive who was believed to have abducted his niece and thought to be heading toward Milton where he has ties. The Marshals in Arkansas advised the Pensacola Marshals to be on the lookout for a 1998 White Ford Crown Victoria, the car reportedly that had been used to abduct the young girl. The Task Force was provided with information on some addresses but were unable to nd the car in this area. Task Force Of cers then eventually gured out Nussey had a former girlfriend living in Milton; but were still unable to locate him. This morning at the East Milton Recreational Park and Santa Rosa Fairgrounds at U.S. 90 and State Road 87, the United Way and the Santa Rosa County Health Department will be distributing 40,000 pounds of food. Food is being handed out by Farm Share, AmeriCorps and SWAT, Students Working Against Tobacco. United Way volunteers will work to break down the nutritional food into manageable packages, from palettes delivered by an 18-wheeler coming from a Quincy warehouse. We are thrilled to have this chance to practice supply distribution at the new covered arena in East Milton, said Kyle Holley, development director for United Way. This gives us the chance to serve others just as we would from this facility post-disaster. Please refer families that you know are in need and send them early, there is a lot of food coming, but it is limited, said Julie Burger, AmeriCorps. The Santa Rosa County Health Department is focused on both promoting better nutrition and access to healthy food, as well as smoking cessation. Families will be served on a rst-come, rst-served basis after visiting anti-tobacco counselors and service providers. We are thrilled with the growing trend we see in area schools and parks of lower tobacco use, said Robbie Leggett with the health department. Together, we can change behaviors that make us a healthier safer community while lowering state health care costs. The food distribution will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or while food lasts at the Santa Rosa County Fairgrounds, part of East Miltons Park off Bobby Brown Road in Milton. To gain access, turn as if driving toward the sheriffs of ce, then make the rst immediate right. The only documentation needed to receive food is proof of Santa Rosa residency: a drivers license, utility bill, etc. For more information, call Holley at 712-8788. Natasha Wall said a man has been calling her home repeatedly this weekand telling her he is from Microsoft and she has a computer virus. She said he told her if she does not take care of it, it will spread. Wall said the man has a strong foreign accent and is difficult to understand, but persistent. My son talked to him the other night, but he had no idea what he was talking about, so he hung up, she added. When Wall contacted the sheriffs office, deputies pointed out the man has no access to her computer or he would not keep calling. They also suggested she get the word out in case others are getting similar calls. A phone number shows up when he calls, but it says name not found. The Sheriffs Office said he is probably rerouting his calls, making them untraceable. Wall pointed out that there is really nothing the man can do unless he somehow gains access to her computer, but she wants others to know about the scam attempts. Marshall is the primary advocate for children who end up in foster care because of unhealthy home environments and works through Families First Network, Baptist Health Care and the Florida Department of Children and Families. When a suspected unhealthy environment is called in to 1-800-96ABUSE, a protective investigator is dispatched, and many times the children are uprooted and protected by authorities. Families are worked with to ensure the childs well being, but many times it is necessary to place them in foster care. The worst situations, Marshall said, are the instances when young, 2to 3-year-old siblings are dropped off by family members who no longer will care for them. Many foster families will not care for siblings, and they have to be separated, rst by family and then separated from each other. For more information, call Marshall at 453-7777. BREATHE EASIER KIDNAP from page A1checked the home of the ex-girlfriend on the 6500 Block of Dogwood Drive and found the Crown Victoria parked outside. Around 11 p.m., Marshals and Task Force Ofcers from Santa Rosa, Escambia and Walton County along with a K9 unit from Santa Rosa County converged on the home, but no one inside would open the door. Ofcers said they broke the door open and found Nussey hiding in the bathroom. The 38 year-old man was arrested without any further problems. The missing girl along with his ex-girlfriend was found inside unharmed. Nussey faces charges in Arkansas for the abduction, and is allegedly a suspect in sexual molestation cases in both Arkansas and Virginia, said ofcials. He may also face charges in Santa Rosa County for kidnapping, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest. He will remain in the Santa Rosa County Jail until he is extradited back to Arkansas. According to reports, the car was impounded and may be treated as a crime scene. Last year, U.S. Marshals say they led task forces arrested more than 123,000 fugitives of which over 86,000 of them were state and local fugitives, nearly 4,000 were homicide suspects and more than 5,000 of them were violent gang members. As well, among that number of arrests more than 12,000 of them were were in the street. He told Tindell the girls would not move out of the road so he could pass. He opened his door and asked them if they wanted him to nd their parents. Tindell said the girls ran into the house and repeated what the man said to their relative, who contacted police. The girls thought the man was trying to take them with him. The man, who remains unidentied, said he went home and thought nothing of the incident until he saw news reports describing him and his vehicle as an attempted abductor. He then called Milton Police to explain his side. Tindell said his department was thankful for the news reports because they probably never would have discovered the truth unless the man had become aware police were looking for him. Nearly 8,000 people saw the report through the Press Gazette Facebook page in less than 12 hours. The report of the incident was posted on the Press Gazette Facebook page within one minute of being reported to police. No further investigation is being conducted. Pensacola Police began warning citizens about two weeks ago to watch for the CryptoLocker Ransomware computer virus. A report of the virus in the Santa Rosa/Escambia area was made on Oct. 29. In each case, opening this .ZIP le will activate the virus. When a persons computer becomes infected, the virus will seek out the computer users personal contacts list and e-mail itself to others. This particular virus is extremely destructive because it securely encrypts all of the computer users personal les. Once these les are encrypted they can only be opened with the use of a private key. By Chris JadallahThor: The Dark World, was not a victim of the usual Marvel, sequel curse. Marvel, in past years, has always proven to let us down with its sequels. Thor 2 not only proved this curse wrong, it also out did its predecessor. This lm was lled with some wonderful moments from the cast, unusually great pacing, and just like all Marvel movies, stunning visual effects. This lm was a subject to quite a bit of hype from Marvel lm fanatics. Does this lm live up to all of this hype? I will have to say no, but it was still an above average super hero lm. Thor: The Dark World is the sequel to the rst Thor lm that was in theaters in 2011. The plot follows Thor as he protects his planet, Asgard, from an ancient race of aliens. These aliens are disturbing his planet as well the Nine realms, one of which being earth. This of course is how Jane, Natalie Portman, is introduced back in the lm. Up to speed? Good, great, grand, wonderful. Chris Farley The rst round of applause will have to go to Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Loki is Thors brother and usually, sometimes, kind of his enemy. Hiddlestons performance was captivating. Any time he was on screen your eyes were glued onto him. Every gesture and breath was watched closely and revealed subtle brilliance in his character. Loki paved a way for you to hate and love him at the same time. This of course, is the perfect formula for any infamous villain. Chris Hemsworth as Thor has been a great decision from the start. He embodies Thor and carries the role like no one else. He once again was in great shape and never misses a beat. I cant imagine what being a God in a lm does for your ego and everyday life. Throughout my reviews and including this one, I mention pacing. What is pacing in a lm? Let me explain. When I refer to pacing in a lm, I am talking about how the lm ows from scene to scene. Does it keep your attention from scene to scene and all the way to the lms end? Or does it stake three ten minute dialogue scenes side by side? These are things lmmakers should be concerned with. A simple rearrangement of scenes or emotional intent of the scenes can really carry your attention and reward you for doing so. Yet again, I say all of that just to say that Thor had a great sense of time and pacing throughout the lm. It grabs you attention, develops the characters (somewhat) and carries you from scene to scene. Unfortunately, the lm loses its steam toward the end. The ending is rushed and doesnt match the climax that was being built. If the ending had a voice it would say, Ok! We are here! Thanks! Now were done, bye! My other big complaint is the character of Thors father, Odin. For some reason, I cannot connect with his character. The lm does not allow me to care about him really at all. Besides the fact he is related to Thor, whom I do care about. This particular aw in the lm bothers me quite a bit. Overall, Thor was a great lm. I do not think it deserves all the accolades I have seen around, but I do not think it deserves some of the negative attention either. They are some really special moments in this lm. Those who have seen the rst Thor lm and The Avengers will really appreciate this lm. This lm has the ability to bring you to tears, make you laugh, and surprisingly enough, engage your mind. Despite its weakness, I do recommend a viewing of this lm. I rate this lm 7 out of 10 Mighty Hammers of Thor.Thor has more in store It wasnt the best movie Ive ever seen, but I really enjoyed it. Andrew Breen I liked how the story continued from the Avengers and original Thor. Jeff Mistrick I wish the lm was more character driven then spectacle driven. Brett Gayman

LocalA4 | Santa Rosas Press Gazette Saturday, November 16, 2013Special to the Press GazetteIt was three months ago that veteran Health Care Executive Tommy McDaniel came to Milton to assume the job as administrator of Santa Rosa Health & Rehabilitation Center. And although McDaniel is a Kentucky native, he feels that his 25 years of living and working in Florida makes him eligible to be considered a Floridian as well. Working most recently in Tallahassee, he says he feels pretty familiar with the Northwest Florida area and nds Milton one of the most friendly and progressive places to live. He was born and raised along the banks of the Kentucky River until he was 21 years old. He attended the University of Kentucky, and after graduating he ultimately chose a 28-year career in health care administration, 25 years of which have been spent in Florida. McDaniel and his wife, Susan, will celebrate their 30-year anniversary in December of this year and are planning something memorable to celebrate it, perhaps a Disney Cruise, he said. By his own admission, there have been a few somewhat lean times while growing up, but one of those occasions is more important than all the rest. This was when he met his wife Susan in Ridgecrest, North Carolina where he was washing dishes at the Baptist Conference Center. And he noted that it was during his volunteering at a facility Susan worked at that he became interested in the health care eld. McDaniel says it has been a happy 30 years, during which he and his wife have parented three children who have given them two wonderful grandchildren. He and his family have always cultivated strong spiritual values, and he says hes proud to have been an Ordained Deacon since he was 19 years old. His commitment, he said, was to efciently manage and provide the best care possible for the Santa Rosa Health & Rehabilitation Center facility and its residents. He said he has spent a great deal of time getting used to the Milton community and its civic affairs. He has secured membership in the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce and the Milton Rotary Club so far and will expand his participation in other community affairs as his primary responsibilities permit. The 110-bed Rosa Health & Rehabilitation Center and its 143 employees provide long-term care and rehabilitation services for residents along the Gulf Coast with the aim of being a premier provider of quality-focused care, one resident at a time. Its emblematic of the continued wussi cation of America. Incognito was asked to push teammate Jonathan Martin in order to make him tougher to help the team win. The bully-ee, Martin, left the team after his teammates left his table at lunch. Its a junior high school-like stunt, not cause for national hysteria. Speci cs are thin. Granted Incognito looks like he should be shing off a bridge, but dont jump to conclusions. The left automatically blames Incognito because two things are in play here: race and sports. (1) Incognito is white and therefore a racist. (2) Football is brutal, involves money and there are winners and losers based on merit; therefore, it is bad. So the media immediately do a beat down on Incognito. Just because the left has not put much thought into the allegations does not mean you shouldnt. Lost in the incremental political correctness taking hold in our country is the fact that we are becoming soft. Kids getting eighth place trophies for participating and misplaced praise for every little thing they do have turned these self-absorbed Xor Y-generation kids into complete pussy willows, way over-self esteemed. We have a prime example in the White House now who acknowledges no faults of his own and who only blames others. I was hazed as in football, in my college fraternity, and at Goldman Sachs. Hazing served a purpose and was usually done because they like you. It takes effort to haze, and guys generally only put forth such effort on those they want to make better. Its odd but it is a guy thing. Women shower each other with fake shallow compliments; guys kid you about your weaknesses. Which identi es problems and allows you to get better? My dad was a drill sergeant at Parris Island. Soon Marine drill sergeants will have to ask politely, through their attorneys, vetted by human resources, if recruits will drop and give them ve pushups. Human interaction is complex, and it is not for us to judge its subtleties. The offensive language both Incognito and Martin used is how they talked. I wouldnt use it, but rap songs are worse. The First Amendment applies, even to football players. Incognito was the best friend Martin had on the team. He felt toughening Martin up was in his and the teams best interest. How do you think that happens in the NFL? It is certainly not in a sensitivity workshop led by a Birkenstock-wearing gluten-free college psych professor. Some have alleged Martin might be gay. If true, I can see how he would want to stay in the closet. It might cause him locker room problems, and guys would stop spotting him in the weight room. More gays in the NFL would be great. It would mean fewer out of wedlock kids and more production value with end-zone dances. Thankfully, you can be who you are in America. In San Francisco you can see parades full of men being who they are. But NFL locker rooms are not Elton Johns Oscar partiesalthough Sir Elton would like that theme. Hazing in the NFL is as old as shooting up a night club and ling for personal bankruptcy right after you retire. Crime in Oakland is so bad that the Raiders hired the Johnny Cochran Firm as defense coordinator. Crime is one thing; hurting someones feelings is another. After the Manti Teo imaginary girlfriend episode, the NFL asked draftees their sexual preference. Most answered frequently. Then they stopped the practice. Maybe a better way would be to have the players list their favorite movie actors. Most would probably name John Wayne or Bruce Willis. My guess is Martin listed Ned Beatty. Football is violent. Its not a sport unless someone obliterates a tendon so loudly you can hear it in the stands. Braving a long line at the $9 beer stand in 35-degree game day weather gives them the right to call players cowards. It is odd, but thats how it is with some spectators. Where does the locker room culture end and the PC world begin? Given the trajectory of Americas current litigious and pansy-like culture, we need to err on the side of manning up. Ron Hart, a libertarian syndicated op-ed humorist, award-winning author and TV/radio commentator can be reached at Ron@RonaldHart.com or visit www.RonaldHart.com. RON HARTThe Hart Beat Every day we are bombarded with images, articles, studies, and ads about the latest and greatest things that can make us healthier; a new diet plan, nutritional supplements, exercise equipment. One day coffee and red wine are good for you, the next day they are not. It is hard to keep up and sometimes it can be overwhelming; especially when so many of these things come with costs. You might feel that you cannot be healthy if you do not have the money to try all of the things we are told will make us healthy. It doesnt have to be that complicated. We can all make smart and simple choices in our lives to improve our health without spending money on the latest health fads. But it all starts with one thing, motivation. If we are not motivated to be healthy we are likely not to make healthy choices. Once we have the motivation to make healthy choices we need to recognize where we can make changes to improve our health. Cant afford a gym membership? That is ne; you can take a walk around your neighborhood and do exercises in your own home that dont need any equipment. Do you eat out for lunch every day? You can start packing a lunch or even think about healthier options when you do eat out. In most cases, preparing your own food is not only healthier but saves you money. Is it time to do your grocery shopping? Make sure you eat a healthy snack before you go to the store. If you shop on an empty stomach you are more likely to make impulse buys which include junk food because you are hungry. You can also park further away from the store entrance to get some exercise in as you walk to and from the store. It is also a great idea to have some healthy snacks accessible such as almonds or an apple. When you get that mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack attack you have something besides a candy bar from the vending machine to hold you over. Everyone should also be aware of resources in our community that can help educate us on good health and well-being. These resources are available year round but there is an event coming up where you could visit many of them in one stop. On Saturday, Nov. 16 there will be a Tobacco Free Farm Share food distribution at the Santa Rosa County Fair Grounds in Milton. This event is free and residents in Santa Rosa County can come and receive fresh and nutritious food and learn about health and well-being from community partners. Some of the groups that will be there are the Community Drug and Alcohol Council, Healthy Start, Area Health Education Council, Students Working Against Tobacco, and the Department of Health to name a few. Food will be distributed on a rst come, rst serve basis between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. with a valid photo ID. The event is expected to be able to serve over 750 families in Santa Rosa County. This Farm Share event will be a great opportunity for many in the community to begin making healthier choices in their lives. But you do not have to attend the event to make a commitment to living a healthier life. Dear Editor, State Licensed daycares in the state of Florida have the opportunity to be on the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Child Nutrition Programs. Some of our state run day cares choose not to be on the program. I dont think they should have the option. I would like for every child care program to establish this into their facility and acknowledge the great nutritional bene ts for every child in their day care program. Facts supporting the need are that our children suffer from childhood obesity from poor eating habits due to parents jobs and busy schedules of both parents and children. They depend on us for their breakfast, which we are happy to be a part of this for them in knowing that their day is getting off to a nutritious start. We also have strong statistics that the diabetes 1 and type 2 need help to manage this disease and having such a well-balanced diet can contribute to a childs health and well-being. Floridas Child Nutrition Programs, as you well know, offer the Food Pyramid, where the child is served nutritious meals and snacks throughout their day to offer them the nutrition and energy they need to learn and grow. I also feel as director of our center that sometimes our meals are the only nutrition some children may get to carry them throughout their day. Knowing that some of our child care centers can refuse to participate in this very important program supporting better health and nutrition is very upsetting to me.Linda Diane Lansdon Director MiltonSome child care centers refuse participation in nutrition programs Nov. 11 This is Maria. Does that mean if I travel 10 miles per hour over the speed limit Ill get arrested? Id like to find out about this. LocalSanta Rosas Press Gazette| A9Saturday, November 16, 2013Special to the Press GazetteThe Milton Garden Club has given the Community Pride Award for a business to The Shoppe at Berryhill at 7605 Berryhill Road. The owner, Anne Norton, managed the shop for three months before becoming the owner in August 2013. Her son, Richard Baker, and her grandson, Donnie Baker, help out by working in the workshop also located on the property. Anne uses crushed glass from Green Up Milton on Park Avenue as mulch in her gardens. Beside the steps on either side going up to the porch are pretty little bushy plants with tiny lavender trumpet owers called mona lavender, which attract butteries and hummingbirds. There are roses, lantana, hollies, lilies and tradescantia. Tradescantia, also known as spiderwort, was named for John Tradescant, who served as gardener to King Charles I in 1600s England. It has a threepetal blue ower that only lasts for one day. However, it will ower from March through August. The seeds were brought from England to New England by settlers in the early years of our country. The seeds escaped, and in selfseeding, moved all over the country. Anne keeps her wandering Jew in a pot so that in the hottest weather she can move it into the shade for part of the day. Anne has begun to make a buttery garden on the back corner of the building. She has planted weigela, purple coneower, purple angelonia and more tradescantia. Right now, there is only one crape myrtle on the property, but Anne is going to be planting more by the driveway. Hanging from the porch are several asparagus ferns. In one comer of her garden is a pretty piece of garden art, a white metal heart with a smaller heart suspended within it. Anne and her son trimmed the trees, cleaned out underneath them and used fertilizer spikes to bring the dying trees back to health. The resurrection ferns, which grow on the trees, are air plants, meaning they get their nutrients from the air and the tree bark. They can lose up to 97 percent of their water and then rehydrate when it rains and bring themselves back to life, hence the name resurrection. They were even taken on a space shuttle mission to study its resurrection in zero gravity. Green Up Milton donated seven azaleas to Anne, which she planted on the side of the workshop. Thank you, Anne, for beautifying your corner of town. The Milton Garden Club salutes you.Homeowner awardThe Community Pride Award for a homeowner goes to Bill and Betty Jo Leach of 6506 Oakcrest Road in Milton. When the Leaches moved in six year ago, the yard was overgrown with bushes and trees. A big tree was leaning over the house, and the day after signing papers of ownership, Bill had it cut down before it could fall on his new home. He then proceeded to clean up the yard, bring in good dirt and plant grass. Aloes grow in a galvanized tub and a wooden planter. Bill said these large aloes all started from one small plant. The dark purple of wandering Jew is in a pot by the front door and also by the mailbox. In the shady section of the front yard on the west side of the driveway, where grass refused to grow, Bill puts clippings from the wandering Jew, which seem to thrive there. He lines this area with cinderblocks sitting on their sides, which gives him small planters to start his baby plants. A couple of century plants live in the front yard. The name is misleading, as they only live 10 to 30 years. The owers of the century plant can grow up to 26 feet tall, but after owering, the plant dies. During its life, the plant sends out many new plants, which can wind up in the grass or other ower beds. A person must be careful not to touch the needle-like spikes, especially the one on the end of the leaves, which can pierce right down to the bone. Taking inspiration from the widely popular competitive cooking show Chopped, Sodexo is hosting Santa Rosa County School Districts rst Chopped Competition from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Milton High School, 5445 Stewart St. in Milton. Representative Doug Broxson, R-Midway, Sheriff Wendell Hall and Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick will battle it out in two cooking rounds with mystery ingredients found only in Santa Rosa County school cafeterias. We are thrilled to support to MANNA Food Pantries and sponsor this worthwhile event in Santa Rosa County, where more than 23 percent of children are at risk of hunger, said Sodexo Nutrition Director Leslie Bell. It is a great way to raise awareness and highlight some of the talented students and leaders of Santa Rosa County. We would love to see this become an annual event. Culinary teams from local schools also will compete in a dessert round. The audience will sample each dessert and vote for the Peoples Choice award. All winning dishes will be placed on the school menus. The event will feature prizes and a special guest appearance by Food Networks Chopped Grill Master Champion and BBQ Pitmaster Ernest Servantes. On behalf of Sodexo and Santa Rosa District Schools, we look forward to the friendly competition and an opportunity to give back to our community, Wyrosdick said. May the best chef win! MANNA Food Pantries is in need of additional donations to aid in their effort of alleviating hunger in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Last year, MANNA provided food to 10,004 people through our two pantries in Santa Rosa County alone, said DeDe Flounlacker, MANNA executive director. We also partner with the school district to provide weekend food through the Backpacks4Teens program, giving over 1,000 backpacks to homeless students last year. Events like Chopped help us to provide much needed food to the hungry. I am very happy to participate in this very worthwhile event to help those in our community that need our help, Hall said. I am also competitive and cannot wait to show my competition how to cook, but I do admit that I will have some good help. Each person is requested to bring three nonperishable food items to the event. Most needed items include peanut butter, individually packaged breakfasts, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned fruit and canned dinners. With the holidays approaching, we should all remember those in our community who are less fortunate, Broxson said. I encourage everyone to contribute to this worthy cause, and I relish the opportunity to compete against Sheriff Hall and Superintendent Wyrosdick. Sodexos support of the Santa Rosa County Chopped Competition aligns with the companys commitments to local communities, wellness and the ght against hunger. Its work with schools supports achievement by providing expert solutions that improve the quality of life for the students, staff and communities it serves. Sodexo does this by designing, managing and delivering services that keep people healthy, safe and productive while also enriching the learning environment. The Leyland cypress is actually a hybrid that dates back to 1845, when Christopher Leyland planted a Monterey cypress and a Nootka cypress near each other on his estate in England. In their natural habitats, the two never grow closer than 400 miles. But suddenly near each other, they cross pollinated, forming the sterile hybrid now known as Leyland. In the very front near the road are the most beautiful hibiscus in shades of yellow, pink, orange and salmon, all planted in a long wooden planter with bark mulch to control the weeds. In the back yard are azaleas, camellias, a large Japanese maple, a Chinese plum, which owers in the fall and winter and then hits in the spring. Confederate jasmine twines along the fence separating the front and back yards. Congratulations, Bill, for a job well done. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.comSaturday, November 16, 2013 BSection Tough LoveI rst heard of tough love when I was in my twenties. I thought to myself, I will be that kind of parent will always do what I have to do to make my child strong. Wow. Its a great idea, and Im sure it works in many cases, but there is a reason they call it tough love. It is really dif cult to do. I have a grown child who simply did not follow the easy path in life. By easy path I mean, stay out of trouble, get a job and stick with it, pay your bills, get married before the kids are born, buy a house, no substance abuse ... etc. It was simple when I was inexperienced to think life is black and white. You do it right or you dont. You make good decisions or you dont. What I have found is life is extremely grey. Choices are sometimes done without the conscious decision to make them. No forethought at all, it seems at times. What began as my child wanting to help someone has ended up nearly destroying him. It has taken over ten years, but that is what happened. He was young and nave when he thought he could save another person. Now Ive been forced to put my beliefs into action. I had to use tough love and make very conscious decisions in order to make this child understand Im not playing the game anymore. This is painful. My child is hurt and angry. I am hurt and angry. Even as a parent who is making decisions that will, in the end I hope help my child, I am furious at the deceit, the thefts, the outright lies. As a parent of course I love this grown child of mine more than life itself, but I have to walk away and turn my back because I am vulnerable to him. I see the eight-year-old who wanted to ride his skateboard off the roof of the house, with those bright blue eyes and hopeful expression. What I need to see is the grown man with his bright blue eyes and hopeful expression and realize he has to do this himself. I cant rescue him any more than he could rescue the person he met ten years ago. Thats a hard lesson for me. As an empowered woman and a mother who dedicated her time, heart and soul into her children ... it is excruciating. I know people reading this column today who are going through a similar situation may not be dealing with their child. It may be a sibling, a niece or nephew, a spouse or even a parent. It could be a friend. When I was growing up, I associated love with warm fuzzy feelings of comfort and trust; understanding and compassion. What I know now is love has many faces. From holding the hands and arms of a child down while a doctor lances an infected wound to turning my physical back to my grown son its all love. They may not see it right now or understand what they do see, but the end result is hopefully the same. The wound will heal and a better, healthier person will emerge. Nathaniel Thomas, Alex Morris, Elijah Reed, Bryson Snowman, Chase Piscottia and Olivia Weekly, along with Coach Amy Wolfenden, will be participating in the FHSAA State Swim Prelims and Finals at the Sailsh Aquatics Center in Stuart. Seeded rst in the state competition, Thomas is undefeated this season. He is also the district and regional champion. Thomas has shattered two school records. He participates in the individual 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Senior Alex Morris will compete as an individual in the 100 backstroke and join his teammates on both relays. Reed, Snowman and Piscottia will be joined by Thomas and Morris in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle medley. These guys have put countless hours into their sport, Wolfenden said. Their families, as well as each athlete, take a lot of pride in their sport, and it shows. Practice for the swimmers and coach is a sacri ce of time and funds. The team practices at the University of West Florida, and each person relies on his own source of transportation. Joining the male swimmers will be Olivia Weekly, who nished rst in regional competitions in the 100 butter y and second in the 50 freestyle. Weekly has reset the Pace school record in the 200 individual medley. It is exciting to see what the next chapter is for these athletes Wolfenden said. They are getting attention from colleges, some of which are Division I schools. Wolfenden is not a stranger to the swimming and the demands of it. Basketball is my whole life, said Burklow, who is also a member of the National Honor Society at Pace High. Burklow broke and reset three school records at Pace this past basketball season. She reset the former record of the most steals in one game with 11, most steals in a single season with 168 and most assists in a single season with an impressive 217. Varsity girls basketball coach Kenny Hughes said Burklow is an awesome player, She works very hard in the gym during and also out of season. Burklow participates in year round travel basketball for two coaches she admires a lot, Binky Martello and Hugh Reed. Reed has worked with Burklow since her sixth-grade school year and has been a great source of encouragement for her. Aware of the level of intensity she exhibits on the court Burklow humorously said the hardest part of the game is slowing down. I have to keep my composure so that everyone slows down when we need to change the tempo of the game. Hughes said she makes good decisions on the court. She also recalls one of her best memories was during her freshman season when she chunked the basketball from the halfcourt line. I threw it over my back and it went in! Burklow said. Both Burklow and Coach Hughes are looking forward to this coming season. Burklow has been a big part of our team for the past few seasons, Hughes said. Santa Rosas Press Gazette| B3Saturday, November 16, 2013BECKY BONDURANTSpecial to the Press Gazette beckysrpgsports@yahoo.com Need a recommendation letter prepared for college, a job or the military? Need a friend when you have a family member in crisis? Need a good laugh or a lesson about what real life is going to be like after high school? Who will ll that role in the Santa Rosa County school system? Coach Robert Freeman has held that position and been respected by so many since 1970. In 1970, after graduating from the University of West Florida with only one objective on his heart, Freeman went to work in his beloved Santa Rosa County school system. He embarked on his 44-year-long journey at Gulf Breeze Elementary School and on the football eld at Gulf Breeze High School. I knew in high school what I wanted to be, Freeman said. I attended Jay High School, where I was provided a strong foundation in what a teacher and coach should be. Hes has been faithful to that ingrained foundation. He has achieved more than he could have possibly expected of himself when he rst entered college in 1966. Now as he retires at the end of this school year, his absence will leave an immense void in Pace High School, where he has worked since 1979, and all of the Santa Rosa County school system. Freeman, who was a recipient of the esteemed Admiral Shugart Award, which is presented by the Pensacola Sports Association at their yearly scholar-athletic banquet, speaks sensitively about what he is the most proud of as he reminisces on the past. When the boys who played for me drop by and they have developed into great dads and productive citizens, that is what makes me proud. I have won a few games along the way, and I remember a few losses, but to stop and realize that I had some part in inuencing just one young person is enough, he said. I always tried to remember to teach and coach with the child in mind. And the lists of those children after what will be 44 years of teaching and coaching go on and on. Many of those very children are now using the same philosophies Freeman conveyed into their lives right here in Santa Rosa County as adults and educators. He is the reason I became a teacher and coach, said Navarre High School Assistant Principal Tim Short. Coach Freeman has had a profound impact on many young men during his career, especially me. He has molded much of what I do as an educator, coach, and administrator. He teaches work ethic, a sense of pride in whatever you do, infused humor, coached and mentored, as well as made Pace High and Santa Rosa County a place where young boys were transformed into proud men. In 1982, Freeman was the rst person Short sought in his own personal time of need, when Shorts father was diagnosed with cancer and then again when he lost his father. His interest in me as a person, player, coworker and friend made me realize the impact one can have on young people, Short said. Freemans alma-mater Jay High Schools Principal Brad Marcilliat remembered how Freeman hired him in 1984 at Pace High School. I was a young guy, new to coaching. There were many of us new pups. I am a better person just knowing him. He has a true heart for kids and is such a great motivator. Marcilliat said Freeman is the real thing and shared his personal recollections of Freemans pre-game speeches and how he has an amazing ability to build excitement in the boys. He is a master of story-telling, he said. Frank Lay, retired Pace High School principal, spoke about all the responsibilities Freeman incurred as athletic director. He is hands on and is always up to date on all the FHSAA guidelines. He looks at every child as a student rst, he expects grades to be a priority then he molds them into the whole athlete. Lay gives credit to Freeman for numerous sports being established at Pace High, for nding funds to assist the programs and for making his own life simpler when he was principal. Assistant principal for the Patriots Herb Cannon accentuated the passion Freeman has for everything he does. He has such enthusiasm for every student, every athletic program and Santa Rosa County. Cannon said. After all these years he is an icon. Former Pace boys basketball coach George Norton counts Freeman as a good friend. He will help anybody, anytime. He is well respected and is an example of strong Christian character, he said. For Assistant Superintendent Joey Harrell, words cannot give an accurate testimony of the man Freeman is. Harrell, as did so many others, played football for Freeman. He was molded by him and now is honored to have his own son play for him. Freeman taught me so many life lessons. He would not allow us to quit, and today I have even more appreciation for him as my own son is developing into a young man under his leadership, Harrell said. I just wish I could play for him one more time. Harrells son, freshman Mac Harrell, played on Freemans current ninthgrade squad. Freeman and that particular group of boys ended his career with a win against Milton. The Freeman legacy will not solely be remembered for creating The Bennett C. Russell Hall of Fame at Pace High, for coaching football as well as track and eld, for teaching drivers education or for the wins or losses. It will be immortalized based on the numerous observations that paralleled anothers remarks without anyone being aware of it: loyal, reverent, character, caring, positive and genuine, to quote only a few. Freeman shares his heart in what he truly believes. Anybody can be a teacher or a coach. One must always remember that they are teaching a human being, and that there is more to teaching than just presenting subject matter. You have to ignite a hunger for life and for learning. As one former player as well as current coworker expressed, to be truly called a coach is something that must be earned. Coach Robert Freeman has earned that endeared designation. 2077822 Gun ShowFebruary 23rd&24thFt.WaltonBeach FairgroundsFREE PARKINGConcealed WeaponsClassSat/Sun11amor2pmFloridagunshows.comSat9-5Sun10-4 November 16th&17thPensacola Fairgrounds BECKY BONDURANT | Special to the Press GazetteAbove, a Pace player passes the basketball to get in position for a shot.
