Page 8 TheSanta Rosa PressGazette Saturday-August 25 / September 1,2012 By BILL GAMBLIN 377-4611 |@SRPG_Bill sports@srpressgazette.com Milton football is looking forward and in 2012 hopes the past few seasons are far behind them. After a couple of rough season,Milton challenged late for a playoff spot under first year head coach and former Milton player,Chafan Marsh. Marsh led the Panthers to a 4-6 mark in a very competitive District 1-6A against the likes of Pensacola High,Pace High, and Pine Forest. Now Milton is ready to make an even bigger challenge in 2012. While the Panthers have been known for their running game, it could be the passing game that will give opposing coaches fits. Milton will feature two Division 1 comittments on the offensive side of the ball and a new quarterback who has been turning some heads in practice. Iasiah Jones, who committed over the summer to Florida State Universty, will be joined by University of South Alabama committment Dejon Funderburk. Funderburk played at Washington High School last season and transferred to Milton High School over the summer. Throwing the ball to these two deep threats will be senior Cody Lowe. “Cody has been doing a real good job this preseason and is really impressing me,”said Milton head coach Chafan Marsh. “We have two outstanding recivers which should change the way other teams will have to play us this season.” Another change is the fact that Marsh and the Panthers this year boasts 11 returning starters, six on offense and five on the defensive side of the ball. These numbers should help to make up for the losses of Michael Suggs, Preston Rich,Bryce Simpson, and Paul Young. The biggest return on the defensive side of the ball is the return of junior DeMichael McQueen. McQueen, who was injured last season in a auto accident, appears to be ready to take over the leadership of the defensive side of the ball he established as a sophomore. “DeMicahel is a leader and we realized that early on last season,”Marsh said. “When he was hurt you could see the affect on our defense in the beginning. “During the season they matured and I think with DeMichael’s return the defense will be even better.” The biggest thing for Milton during the spring drills and summer is how the intensity has returned to practice. "We have a great bunch of kids, but last year we tried to improve by leaps and bounds," Marsh said. "We have been going through a transformation. "The kids have bought into this and they are ready to enjoy the fruits of their labor." For the Panthers there is no rest this season as they start off 2012 on the road against the Crestview Bulldogs. Then in week three they will travel to face Fort Walton Beach, their second Distrct 2-6A opponent of the season before opening a stretch of three consective district games staring with Pensacola High at home on Sept. 21. “I learned the old school way when I played in Milton and then that continued when I was at Southern Miss,”said Marsh, who graduated from Milton in 1987. “The only way I know to do things is to work my tail off and take things one week at a time. “That is the way I was raised up.” If Milton does like they did last year, their post season hopes could hinge on the last two games of the regular season, which will be at home in 2012. The Panthers will host Pace in the ‘Battle for the Bronze Helmet’on Oct. 26 and close the season out against Pine Forest, Nov. 2.Panthers set to prowl 2012 Milton Panthers Football ScheduleAug.31at Crestview7:30 p.m. Sept.7RUTHERFORD7:30 p.m. Sept.14at Fort Walton7:30 p.m. Sept.21PENSACOLA7:30 p.m. Sept.28at Escambia7:30 p.m. Oct.5at Tate7:30 p.m. Oct.12GULF BREEZE7:30 p.m. Oct.19at W ashington 7:30 p.m. Oct.26PACE7:30 p.m. Nov.2PINEFOREST7:30 p.m. Marsh

Page 21 TheSanta Rosa PressGazette Saturday-August 25 / September 1,2012 By BILL GAMBLIN 377-4611 |@SRPG_Bill sports@srpressgazette.com Jay High School’s football team has a completely new attitude. The goal, besides contending for the district 1-A title, is ‘perfect effort’in Jay. "No one is perfect," said Jay head coach Kent Smith. "We are not trying to be perfect, but we are emphasizing perfect effort by every player on every play. “We don’t have any more talent, but the kids are getting use to our system” With 10 seniors on the roster, leadership should not be come an issue in Jay as they have seven returning starters including Ricky Cofield in the backfield. Other returners include Jason Knight,J.D. Atkins, Brent Collins,Tyler Lowe,Colton Williams,Tate Upton, and Cody Smith. Smith took a team that went 0-10 and finsiehd up at 73 in his first year as the head coach of the Royals. As he has laid this foundation for 2012,Smith is talking more than just football to his players. “We have done a lot of different things as far as team building goes,”Smith said. “Besides practice and camps, we varied it up during conditioning and went to the creek like I did when I played at Jay. “We went to the sand bar and did some running and other conditioning for about an hour and a half each day.” While the heat has been a problem, another problem the Royals have been facing in the afternoons has been the thunderstorms. “We have not gotten to practice with pads on as much as I would like to,but we will be ready for when the season starts.” As the schedule breaks down for Jay,it shoudl prove to be quite an interesting 2012 season. Monroe Day School will be the final game of the season this year for Jay as they replace the Flomaton spot on the schedule. Another change this season will be the ‘War on Highway 4’,which moved from the last game of the season on the schedule to week number eight,Oct. 19. With the loss of players like Sammy James,Cody English,Joe Lambeth,Connor Weeks,Hayden McCaskill, and Quinton Garcia the Royals are changing things up a little when it comes to the offenssive side of the ball. Last season the Royals operated out of the Pro-I offense, but this year could challenge some Jay opponents as they are switching to a two-back shotgun scheme. This year is no different as the Patriots avenged their two earlier season losses to Pensacola High and Niceville in the playoffs to win the Class 6A Region 1 title. Now with some new faces in key positions Pace is looking to challenge yet again for another title in District 1-6A. “I just want them to play hard, play together,be physical, and play as a team,”Lindsey said. “All I can ask them as a coach is to give me their best.” With the likes of Pensacola,Pine Forest, and Milton in your district you have to set the bar high and aim even higher. This year the Patriots will start a new quarterback in Brice Moore. Moore,a senior,is not new to the position. Last season, when starting quarterback Devon Varney was suspended for one game, Moore led Pace in a victory over Niceville on the road. “Brice is a leader and a winner,”Lindsey said. “He is the ultimate competitor. “No one wants to win or succeed more than he does.” Lindsey knows this is an important trait for the quarterback position due to the amount of pressure, which comes with the position. “Brice leads by example and this is his chance to lead this team.” Moore is not going to be alone in helping to lead the Patriots offensive as he has a major weapon in fellow senior J.C. Curry. Curry battled through some injuries last season and did a yoemans job throughout the season. “J.C. is at 100 percent,”Lindsey said. “He played through some injuries last season, but he looks ready to go for this one,”Lindsey said. While everyone looks ready to go,Lindsey did keep everything in perspective as the season gets underway. “We are getting better,”Lindsey said. “We are improving on our technique and conditioning daily. “We are no where near midseason form, but neither is no one else at this point.” If there is one concern offensively for Pace it has to be who will replace Patrick Maddox, who was the Patriots receiving threat last season with just over 1,000 yartds. “Patrick was a great player,”Lindsey said. “We have been working hard and our receivers are coming along. “You just don’t replace a player like Patrick, but our receivers are reday to step up and do the job.” While Pace prepares for another season it is almost like a post-season battle just to make it out of District 1-6A. “Our district is very tough and possibly one of the toughest in Florida,”Lindsey said. “With Pensacola,Pine Forest,Milton,Tate, Escambia, and Washington it will be wide open and anything could happen. “I tell the kids it is what it is and for them to play within themselves. All you can ask them to do is to try not to win it by themselves.” Team is a big key for Lindsey and it is something he has stressed for many years. While no one player is bigger than the team, the Patriots do have a big weapon on special teams in Ryan Santoso. Santoso this summer was selected to play in the UnderArmor All-American game this coming January after beating out roughly 500 kickers at a camp in Whitewater,Wisc. “Ryan has really matured this summer,” Lindsey said. “I can tell a difference in him and how he handles himself. “He has developed a lot of composure and seems to feel real comfortable as a kicker and punter.” Lindsey feels that some games could come down to special teams, especially when the Patriots get to the district schedule. Pace will open district play on Sept. 21 when they host Pine Forest with another key matchup coming on Oct. 5 when they host Pensacola High. Prior to that Pace will trave to Niceville fpr a game on Sept. 7. Lindsey

Cody has been doing a real good job this preseason and is really impressing me,said Milton head coach Chafan Marsh. We have two outstanding recivers which should change the way other teams will have to play us this season. Another change is the fact that Marsh and the Panthers this year boasts 11 returning starters, six on offense and five on the defensive side of the ball. DeMicahel is a leader and we realized that early on last season,Marsh said. When he was hurt you could see the affect on our defense in the beginning. During the season they matured and I think with DeMichaels return the defense will be even better. The biggest thing for Milton during the spring drills and summer is how the intensity has returned to practice. 21. I learned the old school way when I played in Milton and then that continued when I was at Southern Miss, said Marsh, who graduated from Milton in 1987. The only way I know to do things is to work my tail off and take things one week at a time. That is the way I was raised up. If Milton does like they did last year, their post season hopes could hinge on the last two games of the regular season, which will be at home in 2012. The Panthers will host Pace in the Battle for the Bronze Helmeton Oct. 26 and close the season out against Pine Forest, Nov. 2.Panthers set to prowl 2012 Milton Panthers Football ScheduleAug.31at Crestview7:30 p.m. Sept.7RUTHERFORD7:30 p.m. Sept.14at Fort Walton7:30 p.m. Sept.21PENSACOLA7:30 p.m. Sept.28at Escambia7:30 p.m. Oct.5at Tate7:30 p.m. Oct.12GULF BREEZE7:30 p.m. Oct.19at W ashington 7:30 p.m. Oct.26PACE7:30 p.m. Nov.2PINEFOREST7:30 p.m. Marsh

Page 21 TheSanta Rosa PressGazette Saturday-August 25 / September 1,2012 By BILL GAMBLIN 377-4611 |@SRPG_Bill sports@srpressgazette.com Jay High Schools football team has a completely new attitude. The goal, besides contending for the district 1-A title, is perfect effortin Jay. "No one is perfect," said Jay head coach Kent Smith. "We are not trying to be perfect, but we are emphasizing perfect effort by every player on every play. We dont have any more talent, but the kids are getting use to our system With 10 seniors on the roster, leadership should not be come an issue in Jay as they have seven returning starters including Ricky Cofield in the backfield. We have done a lot of different things as far as team building goes,Smith said. Besides practice and camps, we varied it up during conditioning and went to the creek like I did when I played at Jay. We went to the sand bar and did some running and other conditioning for about an hour and a half each day. While the heat has been a problem, another problem the Royals have been facing in the afternoons has been the thunderstorms. We have not gotten to practice with pads on as much as I would like to,but we will be ready for when the season starts. As the schedule breaks down for Jay,it shoudl prove to be quite an interesting 2012 season. Monroe Day School will be the final game of the season this year for Jay as they replace the Flomaton spot on the schedule. Another change this season will be the War on Highway 4,which moved from the last game of the season on the schedule to week number eight,Oct. I just want them to play hard, play together,be physical, and play as a team,Lindsey said. All I can ask them as a coach is to give me their best. With the likes of Pensacola,Pine Forest, and Milton in your district you have to set the bar high and aim even higher. This year the Patriots will start a new quarterback in Brice Moore. Moore,a senior,is not new to the position. Last season, when starting quarterback Devon Varney was suspended for one game, Moore led Pace in a victory over Niceville on the road. Brice is a leader and a winner,Lindsey said. He is the ultimate competitor. No one wants to win or succeed more than he does. Lindsey knows this is an important trait for the quarterback position due to the amount of pressure, which comes with the position. Brice leads by example and this is his chance to lead this team. Moore is not going to be alone in helping to lead the Patriots offensive as he has a major weapon in fellow senior J.C. Curry. Curry battled through some injuries last season and did a yoemans job throughout the season. J.C. is at 100 percent,Lindsey said. He played through some injuries last season, but he looks ready to go for this one,Lindsey said. While everyone looks ready to go,Lindsey did keep everything in perspective as the season gets underway. We are getting better,Lindsey said. We are improving on our technique and conditioning daily. We are no where near midseason form, but neither is no one else at this point. If there is one concern offensively for Pace it has to be who will replace Patrick Maddox, who was the Patriots receiving threat last season with just over 1,000 yartds. Patrick was a great player,Lindsey said. We have been working hard and our receivers are coming along. You just dont replace a player like Patrick, but our receivers are reday to step up and do the job. While Pace prepares for another season it is almost like a post-season battle just to make it out of District 1-6A. Our district is very tough and possibly one of the toughest in Florida,Lindsey said. With Pensacola,Pine Forest,Milton,Tate, Escambia, and Washington it will be wide open and anything could happen. I tell the kids it is what it is and for them to play within themselves. All you can ask them to do is to try not to win it by themselves. Team is a big key for Lindsey and it is something he has stressed for many years. While no one player is bigger than the team, the Patriots do have a big weapon on special teams in Ryan Santoso. Santoso this summer was selected to play in the UnderArmor All-American game this coming January after beating out roughly 500 kickers at a camp in Whitewater,Wisc. Ryan has really matured this summer, Lindsey said. I can tell a difference in him and how he handles himself. He has developed a lot of composure and seems to feel real comfortable as a kicker and punter. Lindsey feels that some games could come down to special teams, especially when the Patriots get to the district schedule. Pace will open district play on Sept. 21 when they host Pine Forest with another key matchup coming on Oct. 5 when they host Pensacola High. Prior to that Pace will trave to Niceville fpr a game on Sept. 7. Lindsey
