What brought you to Santa Rosa County? A. I have always given credit to Pace resident Tom Cathey. A job interview with him as a Senior at the University of Florida resulted in Champion International offering me a position out of college, which was located in Monroeville, Ala. Now my husband, John & I met on the job and were married in 1999. He grew up in New York: the one located on either side of Chumuckla Highway, so Santa Rosa County became home. The districts purchasing card is like a credit card, and allows administrators to make general purchases when needed. The district has had the card since 1998 through SunTrust Bank, and since then, it has given back over $343,000 in rebates to the district. It works very similar to a rewards card, said Jud Crane, the director of purchasing and contract administration for the district. We get a percentage back for every purchase we make. That percentage is 1.35 percent. Over time, the percentage rate has risen because of the amount that is being spent on the cards. Most administrators are given the cards to buy of ce supplies or other miscellaneous items for their school that are under $1,000. Its limited to $5,000 a month per cardholder, and its closely monitored, Crane said. We look at every invoice that goes through and it is regularly audited and monitored. Crane said that the purchasing card has virtually eliminated the need for a district warehouse. This will, most likely, take several more weeks. During that time, those needing to visit us can get to the Press Gazette from Highway 90. Enter between Culpepper Insurance and Regions Bank. Park alongside our building. The entrance is on the Elva Street side. Were sorry for the inconvenience. Speak OUT If you have a short comment you would like to make, call the Speak Out line at 623-5887. Longer comments are better suited as a letter to the editor. Wednesday, 5:57 p.m. Yes, this is Bobby. I was reading about the 12 and three acres on Dogwood Drive to build a county courthouse. That sounds good, but the way they usually build, theyll fill the 12 up with buildings and sidewalks and trees and stuff. They might end up with one or two acres to park in. It seems like every time they build some type of building they never leave enough space for parking. Thank you. Wednesday, 4:02 p.m. All I ever see on the Gazettes Opinion page are two far-right columnists (Williams and Hart) unfairly and dishonestly beating up on Obama, Democrats and liberals ... and an occasional anti-Obama cartoon. How about balancing the page up a little with a left-wing liberal or progressive column? Or if thats too much to ask, maybe at least someone whos unbiased, non-partisan, objective, honest, balanced and fair. Itd be a refreshing change. Wednesday, 3:22 p.m. Hey this is Paul. I was reading Wednesdays, May 2, Speak Out. My comment today is how would he like that if it read, let your men keep silence in the churches and its not permitted under them to speak? But they are commanded to be under the obedience of the law. And if men will learn anything, let men ask their wives at home. Where its a shame for men to speak in church. I thought that might be a little refresher. I read the bible daily. It was interpreted by human men, and if you want to go by the bible word for word Mr. Jay, you are living in sin yourself. Tuesday, 1:49 p.m. I wonder what would be done with the burnt out remains, the shell of an abandoned house fire that happened here on Galt City Road. Surely there has to be some kind of a county law that details the clean up of such an eyesore. I myself wrote to Bob Cole for some possible help and guidance. Owner cleanup has to be in order. And also to my neighbors: How about your help in this matter please. Signed John.

In January, George McCormick, who has led to challenge Wyrosdick for the superintendent position, submitted a complaint alleging Wyrosdick violated various provisions of the Florida Elections Law. McCormick was told in a letter from Eddins of ce, Based upon this review, we have determined that the majority of your allegations are without merit and fail to establish evidence that any crime was committed. McCormicks original charges against Wyrosdick included a litany of allegations all found to be without merit except three: In two administrative meetings, assistant chief state attorney Greg Marcille noted there were no political discussions, but that there was a voluntary meeting held in which Wyrosdick announced he was running for superintendent of schools. A Dec. 6, 2011, email from Linda Gooch, a secretary. Marcille notes that, while the email was sent by Gooch on her personal computer, it used her ofce email account. Two emails were sent by Avalon Middle School Principal David Sigmrnjak as well as a voice message left by Sigurnjak on King Middle School Prinicipal David Gunters school telephone. These emails, note Marcille, were sent to Santa Rosa County Administrative Staff Association board members involving petition cards. The investigation involved interviewing 20 witnesses, reviewing numerous documents and researching applicable laws, Marcille notes. Its a good feeling to have this behind us, Wyrosdick said. There are other pressing areas of education that need our attention This investigation turned out exactly (as) I thought. I knew what I had done as a candidate and was con dent I was operating in the con nes of the law. McCormick, on the other hand, had different feelings. If I had done this, McCormick noted, I would have been red, but since (Wyrosdick) is the incumbent, he gets a freebie. How Mr. Wyrosdick is not held to the same law, I do not understand. Insuf cient evidence against Wyrosdick Its a good feeling to have this behind us. President Barack Obama and Wall Street occupiers, along with their allies in the mainstream media and on college campuses, have maintained an ongoing attack on high-income earners, people they call 1-percenters. Listening to their deceitful demagoguery, you would naturally think of them as 99-percenters, but youd be dead-wrong. Last week, MSN Money posted a report titled The richest counties in America. According to the report, residents of those 15 wealthiest counties have median household incomes that are double the national average. Three of those counties have a median income of more than $100,000. The report goes on to say, While many Americans struggle to nd jobs, balance their budgets and get by with less, some folks are living high on the hog. Lets look at some of those counties. Loudoun County, Va., has a median household income of $119,540, making it the nations richest county. Virginias Fairfax County is next, with a median household income of $103,010; the median price of a house is $507,800. Third is Howard County, Md., where the median household income is $101,771. These three richest counties have seven nearby highincome neighbors, which include Arlington and Montgomery counties. The nations richest counties are close to Washington, D.C., where people come to do good and wind up doing well for themselves. These 1 percenters are not wealthy rightwing Republicans; they are Obamas liberals. How can one tell? It turns out that seven of the 10 wealthiest counties in the Washington area voted overwhelmingly for Obama in 2008. These liberals portray themselves as 99 percenters when they are really 1 percenters. Theyre simply running a deceitful rope-a-dope, aided by the mainstream media, on the American people. During last years Occupy movement, truly seedy-looking characters camped out on the streets and in the parks of several of our cities, causing millions of dollars of property damage. They committed robberies, thefts and sex crimes. Some of their lowlife acts, such as defecating and urinating in public and on police vehicles, were lmed. These people also portrayed themselves as 99 percenters. It turns out that they werent that at all. Will Rahn, deputy editor for The Daily Caller, wrote an article titled NYC arrest records: Many Occupy Wall Street protesters live in luxury (Nov. 2, 2011). Nearly 1,000 protesters were arrested in New York between Sept. 18 and Oct. 15. Police collected information on each arrestees name, age, sex, criminal charge, home address and in most cases race. The median value of the homes of the arrestees was $305,000 a far higher number than the $185,400 median value of owner-occupied homes of the rest of us. Ninetyve of the arrestees lived in homes valued at more than $500,000. Those who rented paid a median rent of $1,850 per month. Of the 984 protesters arrested, at least 797 are white. One Occupy Wall Street protester arrested presumably, if you listen to the mainstream media, penniless and from a bluecollar family lived in an $850,000 home in the nations capital. Recall that while on the campaign trail, Obama promised, We will stand up in this election to bring about the change that wont just win an election but will transform America. Along with progressives, who formerly called themselves liberals, Obama wants to transform America into a European-like socialist nation. The Occupy protesters and their useful idiots in the media and on college campuses proudly display signs and banners revealing their preferences and af liations, such as Communist Party USA, Democratic Socialists of America and Fight for Socialism. The American Nazi Party has issued an of cial endorsement of Occupy. The movement is also supported by White House leftist allies such as the Working Families Party, the Service Employees International Union as well as most other labor unions ACORN, the New Party and the Democratic National Committee. During the forthcoming elections, we can be assured that these people will do all they can, including violent protests, to help Obama have an additional four years to continue his transformation of our nation. Questioning security My question is why would a sheriffs deputy have all this equipment in their homes without proper security? You go on vacation, leave what may be a lot of government issued high powered rearms and classi ed documents in your home in a relatively unsecured area with no safe? These guns and documents should have been taken back to the sheriffs of ce and secured. This is a high breach of department security. Of course maybe they thought there was no crime in Santa Rosa County. This is bad management. Joel Miller Milton, Fla. Its not a secret anymore When is a secret not a secret? Our once proud Secret Service agents are no longer the top cops in the United States. A few of them got caught in Columbia literally with their pants down while the taxpayers were paying them to protect the safety of the Commander in Chief and president of the United States. Seems they solicited female prostitutes to share sex with them in their hotel rooms for which, We, the taxpayers were paying. These secret agents had only departed from their family lives a few days before and they could no longer resist temptation. They apparently thought any trysts with the local Columbian beauties would never be noticed. Speaking of noticing, Ill bet their wives at home took notice. Does anyone out there believe this was the rst time this type of behavior has taken place by our Secret Service agents? Does anybody believe that these ten agents who were caught are the only ones fooling around with women while on location protecting our president? My best guess would be no, and this was probably known by many throughout the agency. When one of the agents failed to pay his prostitute the agreed upon amount for her services he thought he could get away with it, but lo, ladies in her profession expect cash not promises. She not only screamed foul, but did it loudly and her screams were heard by many. So, what is the solution to this problem? We could dismiss the Secret Service agency and call in the United States Marines. The agency could also replace all the male agents with gung-ho trained women. Noah Belew Gulf Breeze, Fla. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR MINORITY VIEWPOINT S HARE YOUR OPINIONS www.srpressgazette.com Saturday, May 5, 2012 A Page 8 Section O PINION MINORITY VIEWPOINT Walter Williams By Rep. Matt Gaetz and Sen. Don Gaetz A person is justi ed in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat if he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. Chapter 776.012, Florida Statutes The shooting death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Thankfully, our Constitution leaves it to a jury of twelve citizens, not a gaggle of cable news demagogues, to decide whether a crime was committed and, if so, who committed it. After all, our system of justice exists to resolve the tough cases not just the easy ones. While motions are led and trial dates are negotiated in the prosecution of George Zimmerman, the medias obsession has shifted to Floridas Stand Your Ground law. Riding the extreme rhetoric of Al Sharpton and encouraged by the concerns of Attorney General Eric Holder, anti-gun groups have already declared that law guilty of murder and sentenced it for repeal by the state legislature. As two legislators who will vote on the issue, we want Northwest Floridians to know where we stand as we approach what is sure to be a well-orchestrated, wellnanced attack on the Second Amendment. Assuredly, there are very few laws on the books so pure they cant be improved. In fact, much of our effort in Tallahassee has been to repeal bad, unnecessary, burdensome laws. But it wasnt the fault of Chapter 776.012, Florida Statutes, that Trayvon Martin is dead. If Zimmerman claims a Stand Your Ground defense, that still doesnt make the law wrong. Claims are made in court every day. The court, not the media talking heads, decides if those claims are valid. Without question, the Legislature should stand its ground and defend good law in the face of self-serving, over-hyped rhetoric from the far left. In 2005 when Stand Your Ground was enacted, Florida was one of only a few states that required a victim to run rather than stand his or her ground when attacked by a criminal while using deadly force. Before Stand Your Ground, Florida law favored the attacker. Consider an elderly woman in a dimly lit parking lot or a college girl walking to her dorm at night. If either was attacked, her duty was to turn her back and try to ee, probably be overcome and raped or killed. Prior to Stand Your Ground, that victim didnt have the choice to defend herself, to meet force with force. Calls to repeal Stand Your Ground are anti-woman. Imposing a duty-toee places the safety of the rapist above a womans own life. In fact, until Stand Your Ground was passed, criminals were suing victims because victims, in protecting themselves, were allegedly using excessive force against the criminals. Stand Your Ground simply says, if you have a right to be somewhere and if youre not breaking the law, you may defend yourself to prevent imminent death or bodily harm. You dont have an obligation to do so. You have the right. Those who use every tragedy as an excuse to water down our right to keep and bear arms are already exploiting Trayvon Martins death for their own purposes. In the legislative debate that is sure to come, we will remind them that Stand Your Ground is not a rightwing over-reaction. It was passed by a bi-partisan majority of the Florida Legislature. We will remind them that Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith, while a state senator, was one of the sponsors. Most important, we will remind the critics and the cynics why this law is necessary, who it protects, and if it were repealed, whose side the Legislature would be taking in that dimly-lit parking lot or that darkened college dormitory. Sen. Don Gaetz and Rep. Matt Gaetz represent Northwest Florida in the state legislature. The senator lives in Niceville. His son, an attorney, resides in Fort Walton Beach. Standing up for Stand Your Ground WORD from page A1 They havent. I cant afford a vacation anyway. Pamela Sanders Not really. It has affected my driving and where I go, but not my vacation plans. Keller Perdue No. I dont make vacation plans. I run to Atlanta a couple of times a year and consider the price of gas to go there, but it hasnt stopped me yet. Joyce Hildenbrandt Yeah it has. I havent take a vacation in the last two years. John Jernigan De nitely. I am trying to get to Panama City and with a V-8 engine what gas I can afford doesnt get me very far. Otis Myers Not really. I usually go on vacation of some sort every couple of years. Vicki Ramey

Sports SIDELINE UWF welcomes new womens coach Yelton By BILL GAMBLIN 377-4611 |@SRPG_Bill sports@srpressgazette.com Jeff Mullahey never gave up on his basketball dream, and that dedication has paid off. On Wednesday, the Pensacola State College guard signed a scholarship to play basketball at Troy University. This announcement will rejoin Mullahey with his former teammate at PSC and Pace High, Justin Wright. Mullahey, a 2010-11 Academic All-American for the Pirates and 2012 All-Panhandle Conference honorable mention, ended up sitting out his rst season with the Pirates after graduating from Pace. Yet the desire did not leave the former high school point guard. A lot of hard work has paid off, Mullahey said. Since I rst got to PSC, I have gotten a lot stronger and better, or I wouldnt be going to play Division I basketball. When PSC head coach Pete Pena took over the program, there was a lot of concern for Mullahey, who was promised a scholarship by former PSC head coach Paul Swanson. Coach Pena gave me a new chance, and I had to do what was necessary to take advantage of it, Mullahey said. I have worked on my shot, since I know I am not a point guard, and I am ready to do what I need to do to succeed at the next level. The night before he made his announcement of cial, Mullahey went back to his old school guy and worked on his shot even more. He is very persistent, said Pace head coach Carl Pippin, who attended Wednesdays announcement. He at times has an obsessive compulsive disorder and will keep going over and over the same thing. Last night at school he came by and shot three to fourhundred shots. Pippin is all smiles at the idea of Mullahey shooting the basketball. I wanted him to shoot in high school, and he wouldnt, Pippin said. He is a very unsel sh player to the point when I called a play of him, instead of shooting the ball he would pass it. That is when I kept running the same play over and over again until he shot it. But I can tell you he is a tremendous defender. Even though Mullahey was more of what some might call a manager his rst year at Pensacola State, Pena noticed what he was doing off the court. By BILL GAMBLIN 377-4611 | @SRPG_Bill sports@srpressgazette.com A small community soccer program showed its successes by honoring three of their own who will be going on to play soccer in college. Austin Fryar, the rst male from Futbol Club of Santa Rosa to sign a college scholarship, joined fellow Milton soccer players Laura Nelson and Emily Kaelin, who were honored by Futbol Club of Santa Rosa. So far in 2012, FCS has seen ve of its players sign college scholarships. This is where our players can be in two, three, four or six years from now, said Louie Sahin, who is the director of Futbol Santa Rosa. These players have been with us a long while and have exhibited a great work ethic and attitudes. Fryar said he was kind of surprised to be the rst young man at FCSR to get a soccer scholarship when he signed with LaGrange College in Georgia. This is a breathtaking moment for me, Fryar said. I was expecting Robert (Saville) or Jacob (Breland) from the U-18 team to sign before me. They are awesome soccer players and have helped me so much. While he prepares for college soccer, Fryar will always cherish the honor bestowed on him Monday as the rst male to get a scholarship as a product from FCSR. This has been the best experience of my life, Fryar said. It will be something I will remember for a long time. Kaelin, who will play soccer at Berry College in Rome, Ga., and Laura Nelson, who has signed with Darton College in Albany, Ga., are looking forward to advancing their careers to the next level. It is a proud moment for me, Kaelin said. This is a great feeling, and to get this opportunity after all the hard work we have put in as a team is something great. We are not the ashiest team; we are a blue collar team and work hard. Nelson is looking to make the biggest move of the three former Panthers who played at FCSR, as Darton wants her to move from the defender spot to mid eld. They want me to go from being a defender to playing mid eld next season, Nelson said. I feel that will be a big step for me, but I am willing to take the change. Klug and Sahin both noted that though there is a huge rivalry between Pace and Milton in many sports, they have combined at the Chumuckla Soccer Complex to develop not only as individual players, but as a soccer program as well. This is proof these young people can play together and work together, Sahin said. We have players from both teams. But the key is team and while teaching them the game we are developing some outstanding young people as well. Futbol Club of Santa Rosa recognized Laura Nelson, Austin Fryar and Emily Kalin for their success in the program and moving on to play soccer at the college level. All three Milton seniors developed their skills in the FCSR program under the direction of Louie Sahin and Milton head coach Jeff Klug. The Pensacola State College guard will rejoin former Pace grad and Pirate teammate Justin Wright, who played at Troy this past winter. LIFESTYLE www.srpressgazette.com Saturday, May 5, 2012 B Section May 3 National National National National National National National National Day of National National National Prayer Page 1 By MATHEW PELLEGRINO 393-3669 | @SRPG_Mat mpellegrino@srpressgazette.com Without prayer, we have no hope. Those words came from Milton Mayor Guy Thompson as he spoke to a crowd of about 100 on the front lawn of the courthouse in downtown Milton Thursday afternoon. The visitors were there to fold their hands and bow their heads for the 61st observance of the National Day of Prayer. The theme for this years prayer day was One Nation Under God, and the message stood true in a lot of peoples minds. We cant get too much prayer, said Nell Morris, a Pace resident who drove to Milton for the annual event. Morris said she tries to come every year to the National Day of Prayer because, like many, she said, people need it. We need to pray for all of our leaders, and I come out here in support of that, Morris said. Clouds threatened the ceremony, but it didnt stop speakers from praying for government bodies, churches, school of cials and local law enforcement. Others like Ginger Hobkins said the event sends a true message to what the county and the nation needs as a whole. A lot of people dont realize it, but we need prayer in our lives, Hobkins said. These people are here because they believe in God and have the graciousness to pray for others. Thompson agreed with Hobkins as he stood in front of the audience before looking west to the courthouse agpole to say the pledge of allegiance. I depend on people praying for me, Thompson said. Just like they depend on me to pray for them. The National Day of Prayer was established in 1775 by the First Continental Congress, but it was not fully established into law until 1952 by President Harry Truman. Over 35 years later, President Ronald Reagan amended the law and designated the rst Thursday of May as the of cial National Day of Prayer. The ceremony in Milton was one of hundreds that were held around the nation on Thursday. Helen Pentecost, a Milton resident said she had been coming to the National Day of Prayer in Milton as long as she can remember. Im glad we are praying for our nation, Pentecost said. During the ceremony, the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the government were represented as well as military and local government bodies. You are a faithful God and Your mercy endured forever. You have promised to bless the nation that trusts in You. Our currency proclaims In God We Trust, but in our culture, we are far from You. In the words of the prophet Daniel, We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. We come before You once more, seeking Your forgiveness and mercy. You, O God, are our only hope. Hear our prayer and, for Your honors sake, shine Your face upon this nation. Give our leaders the desire to seek Your wisdom and the courage to follow Your guidance and watch over the men and women of our armed forced as they sacri ce for the cause of freedom. We give You thanks for all You have done for us, and we earnestly pray that You will help us become, once again, a nation whose God is the Lord. In the name of Your Son, and our Savior, we pray this prayer. Amen.
