50+ Pace fire hydrants found useless

By LYNNE HOUGH
Press Gazette Staff Writer
More than 50 fire hydrants
in Pace don't work.
A report carrying that infor-
mation will soon reach the
hands of Pace Water System
board members, according to
Donnie-. Wadkins, Pace

Volunteer Fire Department
Chief.
Two men hired b\ the Pace
Water System (PWS) and the
Pace Fire Department (PFD)
have been all over the area,
checking and documenting the
condition of hydrants. It's part
of a countywide effort to track

pressure and maintenance on
fire hydrants.
Wadkins says Pace Water
has been working diligently
reith the fire department to,
repair hydrants as soon as it is
made aware of damage.
"As we find them, Pace
VWater is doing everything it can

to get them repaired," Wadkins
notes.
.The dysfunctional 53
hIdranms are documented in the
report. Additional intornixion
was received Thursday and will
soon be added, \Wadkins says.
The number could climb close
to 70 hydrants.

The topic of fire hydrants
has been on the minds of coun-
ty leaders since, a Pace fire in
October revealed a h\drant N as

says it will be adopting a "zero tolerance" policy for would-be DUI motorists during this time.

Law on watch for impaired revelers

Colonel Chris Knight,
.Director of the Florida
Highway Patrol (FHP), says the
FHP's statewide traffic enforce-
ment plans for the upcoming
New Year's holiday are set.
FHP says it will implement
"zero tolerance" enforcement

and hazardous violations
throughout' the state. Troopers
will place special emphasis on
aggressive driving, DUI, speed,
and safety restraint violations.
The Patrol is also remind-
ing the public about the risks of
walking and bicycling in.-close
proximity to traffic. Prudent
interaction and adherence' to
laws by motorists, bicyclists,
and pedestrians would prevent
many of the deaths that occur
each year on Florida roadways,
officials say.
The New Year's holiday
period will begin at midnight
tonight and end at midnight,
Monday.
Last year, 40 people were
killed in 35 traffic crashes dur-
ing the 72-hour Christmas holi-
day period. Also, 29 people
were killed in 29 traffic crashes

United Methodist Church
smelled a little too much
like...skunk.
Recently, the church family
found itself dealing \\ ith a fam-
ily of another type: skunks liv-
ing beneath the century-old
building of worship. Again.
Cecile Penton, long-time
Pineview member, removed
several skunks from beneath the
the church, and her o% n home.
"The problem has hap-
pened for years. We remove
thenen and they just keep coining
back." says Penton.
Penton pulled one striped
animal I'rom the site recently.
'.'What was happening,"
says Penton. "When \ou played

floor, the animals wouIld spra\

in the church."I
Penton says the church
hired a trapper, but he only
picked up two from underneath
the building.
Mark Criffield, Northwest
Region Nuisance Wildlife
Biologist at Fish and Wildlife
regional, office says the main
concern about people trying to
rid ihernsel\ es of a skunk prob-
lem is the fact skunks are rabies
carriers.

According to reports, a'
skunk's individual territory\
may span 30 to 40 acres, mak-
ing dens in shallow'burrows or
hollow logs. In urban territo-
ries, skunks den beneath build-
ings, decks, dumps and wood-:
piles. They are capable of bur-
rowing a den a foot or so under-
ground, with. ,%ell-hidden
entrances. They, like warm,
dark, dry and defensible areas.
Crawl spaces under a building
like Pineview fit into the cate-
gory.

She mentions having to
board up the crawl space open-
ing underneath her home to
keep them from burrowing.
Penton says she's caught so
many of the stinky critters her
*.son, Aubrey, played a trick on
her.

K-9 catches knife-wielding man

By LYNNE ROUGH
Press Gazette Staff Writer
A man who allegedly told his victim
la%\ enforcement officers "would have to
shoot him" to stop him was stopped by
fang rather than firearm, according to
deputies.
Santa Rosa Sheriff's officials
responded to the 3800 block of
Rockwood Road in Pace just after 4 p.m.
for an aggravated battery/assault call.
When they arrived, a woman told

About that smoke...

Did you choke on the smoke?
A thick cloud blanketed the area
Thursday. Residents were wondering,
'Where's the fire?'
The answer?
The Santa Rosa County Division of
Emergency Management says Eglin Air
Force Base conducted a 2,300 acre
"controlled bum" resulting in a series of
phone calls to County dispatch.
Santa Rosa is working with. the
Florida Division of Forestry and the
contractor performing controlled bums
for Eglin to offer advance notice to citi-
zens in future events which may cause
the public similar undue concern.

deputies Johnny Lewis Cloud had been
at her home, threatened her with a knife,,
and hit her in the face with his head.
She alleges Cloud told her law enforce-
ment would have to shoot him before he
went to jail. Deputies say they discov-
ered there were two active warrants for
Cloud from Escambia County-one for
aggravated assault with a deadly
weapon, and one for aggravated stalk-
ing.
Cloud ran into the woods, still
armed with a knife, according to
reports. The Sheriff's Office K-9 was
called to the scene and began to conduct
a search, while other deputies set up a
perimeter.
Officials say Deputy Adam
Teichner, along with his K-9 Kai,
tracked Cloud into a wooded area near
the home where he refused to show his
hands to the deputy. The K-9 was
released by the deputy handler and
apprehended Cloud, "causing minor
lacerations to his shoulder and head,"
according to sheriff's officials. The
knife was found on the man.
Cloud was arrested and charged
with aggravated assault and resisting an
officer without violence and held at the
Santa Rosa County jail on no bond.

"Everyone will want to- skate that
beast," says Dexter Simmons, 1lth grad-
er at Milton High School. Simmons
says he believes more skaters will come
into Milton because it's the only skate
park in the local area.
"I'm glad it's here because it'll help
keep me out of trouble," he jokes.
Another skater, Zack Gray, also an
11th grader at Milton High-holds his
board and says he thinks the City will
actually save money in repairs.
"Skaters will tear up any place with
stairs-and it costs the city more
money," reasons Gray.
Bradley Merrell, owner of Beyond
Boards, a skateboarding store in Milton,
says he thinks people will come from
Tallahassee and beyond to seek a good
place to skate.
"People around here go as far as
Tallahassee already," says Merrell.
"This park will have a snake run, pool,
and a small hub for those who like to
skate street."
According to city officials, the skate
park is still on schedule for opening
around the first week of February.
Milton has been working toward its
goal of a skate park for 10 years now.
The concept was a "dream" of
Councilwoman Pat Lunsford who got
the idea from a youth during her original
campaign.

Correction
Two vehicles that crashed
last week, killing one woman
and injuring two men, hit head-
on, according to the Florida
Highway Patrol (FHP).
Early initial reports indicat-
ed both vehicles-an 18-wheel-
er and a pickup truck-were
traveling westbound. However,
the FHP says the pickup truck
was traveling eastbound on the
inside lane of 110. The truck,
reports say, struck the semi-
tractor trailer.

buried some underneath the
grass. By the time I went out
with,my gun, he had brought it
tolme-it was a stuffed skunk."
But Criffield says if a per-
son is having a skunk problem,
the best thing to do is hire a
licensed trapper to remove the
animals.
"There are regulations on
live trapping and the animal
will spray when caught in a trap
and picked up to move," says
Criffield.
So, experts suggest keeping
an eye on the den-when the
animal leaves the area, block
the entrance and exit with.
something like chicken wire.
As landscapes change in
rural areas, says Criffield, it is
not surprising the population of
animals like skunks will dwin-
dle, or relocate to areas where.
they are considered to be more
of a nuisance.
"In an area with a lot of
growth, where a field that was
once a pine forest becomes a
subdivision, people can expect
to come into contact with
skunks-or other wildlife for
that matter," says Criffield.

water systems.
Brad Baker,, Emergency
Management Operations Chief,
says a letter went out to all the
water utilities in the county. It
requested details from each. sys-
tem regarding the date of the
the last system-wide hydrant

test, what the fire flow ratio is
(the amount of water expected
to be produced during an emer-
gency), and the physical loca-
tion of the hydrant.
Baker says the information
is needed to update Emergency
Management computers.
Pace Water System and
Pace Fire Department were
already one step ahead of the
game-working together to
identified problem hydrants for
repair. Hydrants in Pace which
are painted bright red and yel-
low have been checked and
deemed in good working order,
according to Wadkins.
The report says, the reasons
for the 53+ hydrants being out
of service are as far ranging as
the locations:
On Live Oak Lane, a
hydrant was hit by a bus and
needs an extension; at Hamilton

Bridge Road and Oaktree
Drive, the hydrant was hit and
is leaning over; the one in the
4700 block of Keyser Lane has
a steady leak; several are par-
tially buried; at West Spencer
Field Road and Cooley Drive,
the hydrant is buried by a large
rock; some are covered with
debris; many are missing caps;
and a couple have no water
going to them. The one at
Bagwell Rd. and Fawnwood
Drive has been named a "dead
h\drant."'
Wadkins says this report is
exactly what Pace Water
System and his department
wanted.
"We're finding the prob-
lems," he notes. "They're fixing
them."

The Florida Highway Patrol
says Chase T. Harris died at the
scene of the crash on
Chumuckla Hwy. He was a pas-
senger in a 1999 Chevy truck
driven by Corey Scott
McGowen, 20, Pace.
Troopers say the accident
occurred at Chumuckla Hwy.
just north of Ace Lowery Rd.
right after midnight.
The truck was traveling
southbound on Chumuckla
Hwy., reports note, when it
drifted onto the east shoulder of
the roadway. The driver over-
corrected, Troopers-say, caus-,
ing the truck to "rotate clock-
wise with its right side leading."
After flipping three times,
Harris was partially thrown
from the truck. It landed on his
upper body. He was pro-
nounced dead at the scene by a

A study of nearly 3,000 Italian men found a direct relationship *' ,,
between cholesterol levels and prostate cancer risk. Men over the Y I
age of 65 with prostate cancer were 80 percent more likely to have
high cholesterol, compared with men who did not have prostate cancer. Men under 65 with prostate
cancer were 32% more likely to have high cholesterol. The researchers note that male hormones
that play a role in prostate cancer are synthesized from cholesterol. Howe\ er. the relationship could
also be indirect, since the dietary components responsible for increasing a prostate cancer risk i such
as high-fat meat and dairy products also tend to increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood-
stream. The same steps that lower cholesterol may also lower prostate cancer risk. (Ann Oncol.
2006 Jun; 17 (6): 1014-1017.)
A new study shows that sovbean products ma\ reduce breast cancer risk. A meta-analysis con-.
ducted at John Hopkins School of Medicine examined'the combined results of 18 prior studies on
soy exposure and breast cancer risk published between 1978 and 2004. The anal sis found that
among all women, high soy intake lowers breast cancer risk by 14%. The protective effect was par-'
ticularly strong for pre-menopausal women. Many factors play a role in breast cancer incidence,
including late age at fulltime pregnancy, early menarche, obesity, lack of physical activity, alcohol
consumption and other nutritional factors. Soy consumption during childhood and puberty may
also play a role in reducing breast cancer risk. (J Nat'l Cancer Inst. 2006 APR 5; 98:459-71.)

Milton grounds Bayside 76-71

0 Pace's Justin Wright scores

33 in Pats third win of season

By BILL GAMBLING
PG Sports Editor
NAVARRE - Milton got
their holiday tournament season
off to the right start with a 76-
71 win over Bayside Academy
Wednesday.
The Lady Panthers (8-5)
took advantage of some big
runs in the first and fourth quar-
ters as they held on a late rally
for the victory, as the Lady
Panthers only know one speed
when they are on the court and
that is all out.
"The girls rush up and
shoot at times," said Milton
head coach Chuck Douglass.
"But overall I thought we had
several good shots and missed a
couple of lay-ups."
Milton didn't miss much
after they got rolling in the first
quarter as they used a a 14-2
run to go from trailing Bayside
13-8 to a 22-15 first-quarter
advantage.
Early on in the second half
the Lady Panthers built their
lead to 10 points on a couple of
occasions in the third quarter,
but Bayside would not go quiet-
ly.
"They are a good basketball
team," said Douglass. "We
haven't played or practiced in a
week, but they did an excellent
job kicking the ball back out.
"But we, are playing our-
selves back in shape and I feel
we will do a little better as the
tournament goes along."
Milton saw their five point
lead at the end of the third quar-
ter, 56-51, quickly disappear
when Bayside's Alex Calametti
hit a three pointer to make it 56-
54 in favor of the Lady
Panthers.
That is when Milton
responded with a 10 point run
to build a 12 point advantage,
but Bayside made a push in the
final two minutes as the Lady
Panthers started fouling for
some reason as Bayside went
on a 13-2 run.

During the run Bayside
went six-for-six from the chari-
ty stripe forcing Douglass to
put his starters back in.
Milton finished the night
with three players in double fig-
ures led by Meredith Pastucha
with 22 points as five of her
baskets came from beyond the
three-point arch.
Centraya Nettled poured in
20 points; while Tantela
Williams turned in a double-
double with 11 points and 13
assists for Milton.
Thursday saw the Lady
Panthers drop their game to
Mosley 63-50.
Williams led the Lady
Panthers with 16 points while
Nettles added 11.
The Lady Dolphins were
capable of matching. Milton in
speed and presented another
problem with their post game.
"Mosley has a real good
post game and have a couple of
good shooters," said Douglas.
"Another problem we have is
that we are not a real patient
ball club.
"It is something we work
on in practice, but is just might
not look like it."
Milton closed out the
Navarre Beach Classic Friday
night against Daphnie (Ala.).
In boys action Pace posted
their third win of the season by
defeating Carter High School in
the Carter Classic outside of
Gatlinburg, Tenn., on Thursday.
The Patiiots defeated
Carter 83-68.
Sophomore Justin Wright
led the Patriots with a whop-
.ping 33 points as four Pace
players ended the night in dou-
ble figures.
Sean Cassell finished the
night with 16 points while Ryan
Hanks and Aaron Munoz fin-
ished the game with 14 and 10
points respectively.
Offensively the Patriots
erupted as they led Carter 55-35
at halftime.
