Let the shopping begin:

The games are over, the family's gone, the turkey is all dried out...

Ready, set, shop!
Santa Rosa retailers are tak-
ing note of the passage of
Thanksgiving and looking for-
ward to a strong season for bar-
gain hunters.
According to some, the
Christmas shopping tradition is
changing. Historically, retailers
set up , for the day after
Thanksgiving as the largest
retail day of the year, some even
partake of Tylenol before the
day begins.
"Not so anymore," says
Wade Allen, owner of Hall's
Hardware. Allen believes

Local satellite servers ate
"flooded with calls"-cus-
tomers switching from
Mediacom, Santa Rosa
County's cable provider.
They are reacting to state-
ments "crawling" across the
bottom of their screens as they
watch WEAR TV.
Channel 3 belongs to
Sinclair Broadcasting, which is
currently negotiating with
Mediacom. Sinclair wants
Mediacom to cough up a per-
month/per-subscriber fee in
exchange for the rights to carry
WEAR's programming..
Dan Vogt, owner of Dan's
Satellites, Highway 90 in Pace,
says the deluge of calls is
almost .like a hurricane has
come through.
"Everyone is worried
they're going to lose their
favorite channel," says Vogt.
Vogt represents both Dish
Network and DirecTV-both
of which have just re-negotiated
with Sinclair and are "locked
in" to the rights to carry WEAR
for "quite some time."
Nick Jackson, Marketing
Specialist for Escambia River
Rural Services in Jay, says his
firm has also received many
calls because of the television
'screen ticker.
Mediacom's editorial state-
ments, airing to cable sub-
scribers, ask for understanding
and for viewers to stay with the
local company. While describ-

Despite storms, insurance rates, county growing

By LYNNE HOUGH
Press Gazette Staff Writer
The name of this county is
synonymous with growth.
Santa Rosa County was
named the second-fastest grow-
ing county in Florida by
Florida Trend Magazine.

In every section of the.
county, new subdivisions are
cropping up. Businesses are
being built on most main thor-
oughfares.
Those who drive the roads
of Santa Rosa County know
what it means to be caught on
Hwy. 90 in Pace or Milton at

rush hour. Even trying to travel
west on Hwy. 90 from East
Milton in the afternoon can
mean a wait with the sun glar-
ing into the eyes of drivers.
But what does it mean in
numbers?
Santa Rosa County is 1,017
square miles. In 1990, the total

hopes to grow four-fold

The Santa Rosa Education
Foundation, (SREF), along
with Take Stock In Children,
have an opportunity to receive
$200,000-if they can raise
$50,000 by December 31.
Since qualifying for the
"TurboCharge Challenge"
.Award, SREF was one of eight
out of Florida's 67 counties to
secure grants in what officials
term an "extremely spirited"

competition, which began in
September.
Officials for the program
say Santa Rosa's successful
.application calls for dramatic
expansion of the local program
by increasing the number of
Take Stock scholars from the 35,
enrolled at the end of the 2005-
06 school year to 164 scholars
by the 2009-10 school year.
The grant committee decided to

Taminco assumes Air

A meeting, was recently
held to bring together commu-
nity and organizational leaders
to meet the executives of
Taminco.
Taminco finalized an agree-
ment with Air Products to
acquire its higher amines and
methylamines business. This
will include the three operating
units at the plant in Pace-and
facilities in Louisiana and
Brazil.
Cindy Anderson, Executive
Director of TEAM Santa Rosa,
celebrates a world leader in the
amine industry choosing Santa

local leadership.
SREF Executive Director
Kyle Holley says it's exciting
the foundation grew more last
year than any other in the state.
He continues to say, although
Northwest Florida is usually
ignored, most now have to take
notice of the tremendous
growth and challenges of large
development in the local area.
"It's a great opportunity to
raise $200,000 because of such
growth," says Holley. He clari-
fies by explaining, by matching
state funds to the $50,000
raised the group will have gar-
nered a total of $100,000, plus
TurboCharge will throw in
another $100,000, bring the
total to $200,000.
Angi Brown, Program
Director of Take Stock in
Children, says the program is
trying to find 42 more individu-
als to donate $1,000 because
the program has already
received $8,000 toward the
goal.
"But we'd love for someone
to consider donating a whole
scholarship-$5,000," says
Brown.
She explains it has to be
"new money" from a "new
donor" for the donations to
qualify in the program. In the
end, says Brown, once the goal
is met, 20 more children will
have college scholarships.
She says the grant will help

those calling Santa Rosa
"home" topped' 141,750. The

Remodeling current
schools and repairing those
with structural concerns or out-
dated facilities remains a prior-
ity, according to school offi-
cials.
The growth in student pop-
ulation is resulting in plans to
remodel and convert rooms at
existing schools. While the five-
year plan awaits approval on a
state level, county School
Board leaders continue to keep
the future demands in sight.

Syndrome X

Syndrome X is insulin resistance, a condition that involves a"
decrease in the sensitivity of the body's cells to the action of
insulin. This syndrome was discovered by Gerald Reaven, M.D., a
researcher at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Reaven
describes Syndrome X as a little known metabolic disorder in
which insulin loses its ability to move glucose into specific cells. . ,
Dr. Reaven believes 60 to 75 million Americans have Syndrome X
and most are unaware of this serious problem.
The "cluster symptoms" are high blood pressure, increased
triglycerides, and decreased HDL (good cholesterol), high glucose
levels and obesity. More serious diseases can develop from
Syndrome X, which is why Dr. Reaven believes early diagnosis ' :
and treatment is crucial.
Highly refined carbohydrates such as sugar, cereals, snacks, pizza, breads, and soft drinks are
just some of the foods that wreak havoc on our bodies by introducing unnaturally high levels of
sugars into the system. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains do not have the same affect
as does highly processed grains.
Researchers suggest that drug therapy may not be the best choice of action for Syndrome X.
Because the disease is believed to be a direct result of nutritional deficiency, people should start
with a diet low in carbohydrates to restore nutritional balance, avoid foods with refined carbs, trans-
fatty acids, margarine and partially hydrogenated foods.
Nutritional supplements such as Alpha Lipoic Acid, Co Q10, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Chromium,
Magnesium, and Zinc all play a vital roll in insulin production. Herbs such as Milk Thistle, Bitter
Melon, Fenugreek, and Stevia can also play a role in recovering from Syndrome X. Maitake
Products, Inc. has a Syndrome X complex formula you may want to try.
Because Syndrome X is defined by several symptoms, careful diagnosis and personal evalua-
tion is very important. Consult with your family doctor because not all Syndrome X people require
the same treatment.

MILTON HIGH

PANTHERS
- # I

It seems that Natalie Nicole Holler is the per-
fect student: outgoing, optimistic, in Honor class-
es, Senior Board, and Parliamentarian of
Student Council: she is a well rounded and pop-
ular student at Milton High school. With an
athletic, aerodynamic frame and a low center
of gravity, she is the perfect build for a
cheerleader.
When she was little, her family lived in a
neighborhood with two different families. She
has woods on one side of her street and
water on the other,
offering natural seclusion, and even 17 years
later she lives in a small neighborhood, only
populated by six families. It was in the neigh-
borhood that Natalie was
destined to find her best friend; Miss Erin
Grace, also a senior at Pace High School.
Natalie's parents have been happily
married for 23 years and as Natalie herself says,
. "I guess I was kind of sheltered." From growing up
in such a small place, she has remained a very fam-
ily-oriented person over the years. She is introverted,
individualized, and very anti-drama. and her parents
always taught her the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as
you would have them do unto you." Because of this teach-
ing, she is and always has been against the labeling of others
and she likes people who pave their own path.
Natalie's hobbles include: shopping, cheerleading, and being with her boyfriend, Dustin, but also
fishing, swimming, surfing, and just being active In general. And though she Is part of the "Myspace gen-
eration." she calls herself "the worst Myspacer-EVER "
One of her funniest memories Is when, as a freshman cheerleader, she was doing a shoulder sit
at a game with a fellow cheerleader. The other
cheerleader performed too early, and she rolled off in front of everyone. Another story that makes her who
she is Involves Hurricane Ivan. Living next to the water, her house was flooded. She and her family left
with one suitcase full of clothes and returned after everything calmed down. Going through this life-alter-
ing experience made her more fully realize to love her family and to appreciate all of the small things.
Through all of the complexities that make Natalie who she Is, It Is no real surprise that she was
crowned Milton High School's 2006-2007 Homecoming Queen, and if what has been revealed In this pro-
file is any indication, she rs a very deserving person and will do very great things in her future.

For the third year-in a row, the Class of 2008's Powder Puff Football

after the'seniors put away the Sophomore team, the Classes of 200/

two minute half time, that Was abbryiated to get in as much playing
'time as possible before t-hreateriing weather moved in, play resumed
only briefly before a clap of lighting ended the contest as rain poured
down 'on the-teams and fans alike. The' Soggy conditions failed to
.sa.apen the 'spirits of the C,lass of 2008 team.
This, team ,has .been. coached since .their inception during their 9th
grade: year' by. alumni Jim Waters,', youth, minister of First Baptist
Church, and Bob Lowe, First Baptist Church administrator. Joining the

Community Pride Winners

Brenda Nixon is shown in front of her store, Nixon's, 5061 Dogwood Drive. Nixon's won the November
Community Pride award. Nixon's always has superbly trimmed landscaping. The holly shrubs out front
were selected so they will never outgrow their location. The azalea blooms are spectacular in the spring
and everyone enjoys the large potted weeping.Youpon shrub that sports cheerful white lights year round.
Nixon's will be celebrating its 30th year in Milton.

Super Specials

The Milton Garden Club presented the Community Pride Award to Jerry and Pam Mitchell who live at
6616 Ravine Street, Milton. Jerry and Pam Mitchell grew up in Milton and always admired the home-
even when it was held by the previous owners. Pam, who lived only two blocks away remembers the
home's garden filled with large ferns and caladiums. Last year the Mitchells bought the 73 year-old
Spanish style house. Unfortunately they closed on the house shortly before hurricane Dennis hit. An
immense oak tree which fell on top of the house during the storm caused considerable damage. The gar-
dens required a total reworking as well. Undaunted, the Mitchells completely restored both the house
and gardens. (Submitted photo)

It has been proven in the past that when a few people
actually trust & believe the promise of God, that God
will come among that people and do great things.

We're not perfect. We just believe God wants to do
something, and we are experiencing that something!

If you are out of church, thinking about joining, never

By BILL GAMBLING
PG Sports Editor
Jeff Purvis has seen misfortune end his racing career but he will
never forget winning what he considered one of the most important
races he was ever in - the 1995 Snowball Derby.
"I had that race won so many times," said Purvis, 47, from his home
in Clarksville, Tenn. "But we would have some kind of break down.
"I didn't want to quit running it until I could actually say I had won
the Snowball Derby."
And Purvis was not fibbing about how important the race was to
him.
In 1988 Purvis made his first appearance finishing third in a car
owned by James Finch to Ted Musgrave and Rick Crawford, the fol-
lowing year he posted his worse finish ever in 21st.
When Purvis won in 1995 he defeated Crawford, who won the
Super Late Model race in 1989 and is currently driving in the
Craftsman Truck Series.
"l995's win \\as a big in for me." said Pun is. who was -
drit ing to a late model race at the Talladega Short Track w hen he '
suffered his second major injuai "I had aliwa.s heard about the

more than an thing else.
"'\\hule "e w would be running the short track AU-Pro "
Series I would start %%ork on building mni Derby car three to .-
tour months before the race." '
The fact that Pur is has quit racing doesn't mean he -
has quit follow ing the sport. '
"I still follow the derb ." said Punr is. t ho onl\ missed 4 -- W
the race once between 1988 and 1996. "There is something
ven special about that race that catches mi interest."
There is something special about this race. whichh has i

carrying his race car blew a front left tire crossing the median, struck
and oncoming car, and burst into flames.
Riding in rig with Purvis were his wife, 15-year-old son, and
crewmembers.
"When you have a wreck with your family, that scares you," said
Purvis. "Health wise now I am doing real good, but I am still sore.
"I am not back 100-percent, but I am back to work at my business.?
The injuries he sustained in this wreck included another broken
neck and he also broke his back.
His wife sustained knee injuries.to her PCL and MCL.
Despite his love for racecars the accidents he has recovered from
have taught him a lesson will never forget.
"Racing has been good to me," said Purvis, who has driven for
Bobby Allison, Rick Hendrick, Morgan-McClure, and even the late
Neil Bonnett. "It helped me grow my business and offered me
several opportunities.
. b.u "So I can't look back and ;sa anything negative,

said Pun is. "II orn for him, but I ha'e to admit I

there to support him."
And does that mean another Pur is

Man's Best Friend Can HelD You Fiaht Arthritis

Did you know that the family dog could be the best thing to happen to your health? A brisk walk with your canine companion can help keep you and
your dog fit and can relieve some of the aches, pains and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.
More than 20 million Americans have osteoarthritis, also known as OA. OA is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by the breakdown of
joint cartilage, with bone eventually meeting bone. Many of the disease signs, symptoms and treatments are similar in both pets and people.
"With proper diet, exercise and medical treatment, mobility can be maintained and arthritis pain reduced," says Dr. John H. Klippel, president and
CEO of the Arthritis Foundation. "This means that your twice-daily walks can help to keep both you and your pet fit while alleviating pain and reduc-
ing swelling."
Early morning stiffness is a common sign of arthritis. While the temptation to rest in order to avoid aggravating the condition is strong, exercise actu-
ally helps - keeping joints lubricated and strengthening muscles and cartilage. The stronger the muscles and tissue are around joints, the better they
will be able to support and protect those joints - even those weak and damaged by arthritis.
Exercise will help you and your pet: AI
 Keep your joints flexible.
* Keep muscles around the joints strong.
* Prevent further deterioration of bone and cartilage.
* Improve your ability to perform daily activities. )

Improve your overall health and fitness by
energy - helping you sleep better, making
and controlling your weight.

your heart stronger
