The Frostproof Chamber of
Commerce as named Tony Sackett
and Marti Michaelis as their 2011
Man and Woman of the Year.
The pair were honored Thurs-
day during the chamber's annual
dinner.
"This man of the year consis-
tently puts others before himself,"
noted last year's Man of the Year,
John Alexander, who introduced
this year's winner. "He is dedicated
to his family, friends and commu-
nity. He continuously pours many
hours of volunteer labor back into
its businesses and schools."
Sackett was active in the Ben
Hill Griffin Jr. Elementary and
Frostproof Elementary PTO's,
and his involvement in Frost-
proof Middle Senior High School
included sitting on the School
Advisory Council and Parents
Advisory Council as well as being
a dedicated volunteer for Project
Graduation.
He has coached Little League
sports, including soccer and
softball, and served on the board
for youth ball, spending countless
hours in the concession stand.
Alexander noted that Sackett
served as the Sunday School direc-
tor at Emmanuel Baptist for many

years.
"When a church member quali-
fied for a Habitat for Humanity
home, he volunteered to assist
with construction," Alexander
added.
Sackett has also served as a
volunteer for Relay for Life, and
this year is serving on the event's
organizing committee.
He is a current member of the
Frostproof Chamber of Com-
merce, sitting on the group's
board, and has been instrumental
in bringing new business into the
city: Alexander also noted Sackett
has been employed in the same
job for more than 30 years, where
"he has served the members of
the community in both large and
small matters any time of the day
or night."
"I did not expect to get this, I
really didn't," Sackett said. "I'm
honored. Some of that stuff he
said I forgot that I did, but that's
just what I do."
His wife, Sandi, whom he
thanked, was a previous winner of
the Woman of the Year Award.
Michaelis is a native of West
Chazy, N.Y., and recently retired as
a paraprofessional from Frostproof
Middle Senior High School where
she played a vital role in getting
Soccer established as a sport.
"She also single-handedly

reinstituted the Rotary-sponsored
Interact Club and served as its
sponsor for many years," noted
Carol Hill, last year's Woman of the
Year, noting her longtime involve-
ment in a number of school and
youth issues in the community.
"Many students have our Wom-
an of the Year to thank for helping
them with college applications,
letters of recommendation and
numerous other things involved
with coming successful after high
school," Hill noted. "She gave of
her time selflessly to help anyone."
Michaelis has been married for
more than 30 years and has two
children, son Matthew, who is an
officer in the United States Coast
Guard, and daughter Sarah, who
serves in a guidance capacity at a
prestigious university in Washing-
ton, D.C.
She studied at Houghton College
and State University of NewYork at
Plattsburgh.
"I've got to say, I'm totally
shocked," Michaelis said. "It takes
me back about 20-years, when soc-
cer started here. I was told 'never
in this football town,' but here
we are. We have all the wonderful
sports for our kids. That's what it's

Barbershop tradition will live on

barbershop tradition alive in Frostproof.

Back in September Junior
North, Frostproof's barber for
nearly 50.years, decided to close
up shop and retire. The depart-
ing North stated, "It's about time
to slow down and smell the flow-
ers. Sit back and enjoy life."
After North's announcement,
Wesley Wise advised that the
Chamber of Commerce "was
hoping to find a replacement for
North's Barbershop" at 17 Wall St.
in the Ramon building.
North's retirement was her-
aided as the "end of an era." But
then Wise and the Chamber of
Commerce came through. The
Barbershop, a hometown institu-

tion of nearly 80 years, since it
first was opened by Jake Wise in
the 1930s, was to continue in the
same location.
A father and son partnership,
Jimmy Lebron Si. and Jimmy
Lebron Jr., will be the new ten-
ants and are working hard to
make sure the era does not come
to an end. The barbershop is
being restored with a "retro"
look befitting its location in the
recently restored 1920s Ramon
Theater building.
The Lebrons have made an
effort to keep and refurbish
whatever equipment was left
from the old barbershop, while
using modern conveniences

VIEWPOINT

Counties playing rigged game

Reeling from years of budget cuts, unfunded man-
dates, moving regulatory targets and micromanaging
from Tallahassee, Florida's counties last week issued
a defensive list of priorities for the 2012 session of the
Florida Legislature. Not surprisingly, the list adopted
by the Florida Association of Counties is heavy on
preserving home rule, securing funding for infra-
structure and services and minimizing legislative
attempts to pass through more costs to local govern-
ments, employees and communities.
The FAC launched a preemptive strike against
another tax hike on public employees in the form
of a second increase in contributions to the Florida
Retirement System.
The Legislature already passed a 3 percent payroll
tax hike on teachers, police, firefighters and state
workers earlier this year. A bill has already been filed
in the House of Representatives that would reduce
retirement benefits for new hires.
With Gov. Rick Scott itching to cut the state's corpo-
rate income tax to make the state even more reliant
on regressive sales taxes, public employee salaries
and benefits have become a favorite source of funds
for tax cuts.
Despite the rising cost of providing health care for

A journalism professor at Florida
State University was fond of telling his
entry level students that you had to
write a million words before you could
consider yourself a writer.
From time to time, I have tried to fig-
ure out how long it took me to write my
first million words. It is a fool's errand.
I figure I have written about 5,000
columns in my career, and Dad wrote
more than that, starting fresh out of
college, continuing even during his two
years in the Army in World War II, until
a series ofTIAs (mini-strokes) when he
was well into his 80s finally took the
keen edge off his writing ability.
I regret that I didn't read all of them,
but of the thousands that I did read,
one always stood out in my mind. It
was written at Thanksgiving in the early
1960s.
Adding to the poignancy of the mes-
sage is that this was during a time of
crisis in his family, including the slow
and painful death of his father from
throat cancer.
Dad Loyal Frisbie died on Dec.
5, 2004, at the age of 89, but that inspi-
rational Thanksgiving message is time-
less, and I enjoy rereading it each year
at this time. Perhaps you will too.

Unless you are a turkey you have
much to be thankful for at this Thanks-
giving season.
If you are reading these lines; you
have eyes to see with, and an education
to read with.

Our Viewpoint
Florida's poor and elderly, the Florida Association of
Counties anticipates the Legislature will seek more
cuts to local health departments via staff reduc-
tions. The FAC did throw its support behind moving
health departments toward a managed-care program,
similar to what has been done with Medicaid. While
the counties may be OK with this, it strikes us as a
big win for health insurance companies offering such
plans at the expense of actual health care services to
low-income Floridians, children and the elderly.
The effect of such paper-shuffling for dollars will
be bigger holes in health care services that must be
plugged by charities and volunteers, such as free
clinics offered in Polk County. Not only has Florida
failed to come up with a comprehensive health care
solution, the strategy now seems to be getting away
with providing as little health care as possible without
losing federal Medicaid money.
One of the challenges for counties in dealing with
Tallahassee is how frequently and radically state
policies and programs change from year to year.
Infrastructure funding is a prime example. First, the
Legislature passed a "concurrency" law that required

you, you have ears to hear with and a
mind to think with.
The past year may have been a sad
one for you. There may be deep trou-
bles on the horizon ahead. Still, there
should be much room in your heart for
thankfulness.
If you lost a loved one in the past year,
you know that they are now past pain
and sorrow... and that God has so ar-
ranged the Universe that your own grief
at the loss is less as the days roll by.
If dark death sits at your door wait-
ing for a critical illness to take its toll in
your household, you do have the loved
one with you for yet awhile.
Money matters may be causing you
concern.
If you could afford to buy this news-
paper, or if you know you will be able
to feed your family today and tomor-
row and the next day, there are millions
of people in this world who will find it
hard to believe anyone could have such
good fortune.
It's possible for the time being you are
in such pain that it is a monstrous effort
for you to move around.
If you are able to rise from your bed

developers to build or pay for schools, roads, parks,
public safety facilities and more to meet new de-
mand. Last year, it essentially did away with concur-
rency (and the rest of the 1985 Growth Management
Act) by transferring to counties the power to require
such infrastructure contributions, but stacked the le-
gal deck against them by putting the burden of proof
such work was needed on the counties. Florida's
return to historical growth rates will lay bare the folly
of this approach. Ready, set, sprawl.
The FAC wants the Legislature to allow counties to
use a combination of local impact fees and the "pro-
portionate share" process used by the state Depart-
ment of Transportation to cover infrastructure costs.
FAC members have been falling over each other to
scale back impact fees, so the new authority they are
seeking is already hamstrung by short-sighted local
decisions.
We expect the Legislature to ignore the FAC's re-
quests. That's not because they are unreasonable, but
because the driving principle of the controlling party
is to dismantle government.
Short of that, making it as inefficient and unre-
sponsive as possible serves to reinforce that principle
and win new converts to an ignoble cause.

or chair and walk, there are people in
hospitals throughout this land who
would gladly exchange half the years
they have left to do as much.
Please believe me, I would not for one
moment belittle your troubles, what-
ever they may be.
I know that your troubles weigh
heavily because they are yours, and you
must live with them, hour by hour, and
day by day.
It is only human for each of us to feel
that our burdens are heaviest. But per-
haps you can join me in this thought:
As I catalogue my own difficulties and
look about me, I don't find anyone with
whom I would wish to exchange miser-
ies.

My own are familiar to me, and
manageable, and I am grateful that I
am alive in God's world, where there is
cause for thanksgiving in every sun-
beam and every raindrop, where every
new dawn brings promise of hope and
faith for a brighter tomorrow.
May God's love for his children awake
an echoing love in all our hearts.

(S. L. Frisbie is retired. One year ago, in
his Thanksgiving column, he said he was
thankfulfor the opportunity to continue
writing a column, and for friends who
said they enjoy reading it. And he closed,
"I hope I have the grace to quit writing it
before you quit enjoying it." That has not
changed.)

BARBER: Tradition carries on

FROM PAGE 1A
to enhance rather than replace older
equipment. For instance, you have the
retro ceiling fan common to the era, yet
there's an unobtrusive air conditioner
that hums quietly in the background
when needed.
The Lebrons are longtime area resi-
dents from the next town south, Avon
Park.
Lebron Jr., who grew up in the area,
at one time trained under Frostproof's
Coach Maddox and is quite the a
Bulldog fan. The mascot is also being
incorporated into the retro d6cor of the
barbershop.
The Frostproof Barbershop will actu-
ally be run by Lebron Jr. with Lebron Sr.
coming in to help part-time.
"Jimmy has actually been in the bar-
bering business longer than I have," the
father said. "He brought me into the
business," an interesting story you can
inquire about on your next visit to the
barbershop.
Now even though Lebron Jr. may
have "Jr." after his name, he's anything
but a junior barber. Lebron Jr. is a Mas-
ter Barber, which is the highest rating
you can have in the barbering industry.
He can and does cut any type of hair in
any style. He is even qualified to teach
barbering, if he so chooses.
It all started when as young man,

ARTIST
FROM PAGE 1A
place his art work on the back burner
for a while, but he never lost his love of
painting.
Taking art classes in different col-
leges, MacMillan became very good
in many methods of painting. Travel-

Lebron Jr. accompanied his father to
the barbershop. The aromas, the me-
chanical chairs spinning around, going
up and down, the sound of the buzzing
clippers and clicking shears were all
enticing.
To Lebron Jr., there was even more
enchantment: the barber himself and
how he manipulated the shears, the
comb and the clippers to create a
masterpiece from what once may have
been a tangled mess.
Lebron started cutting hair at-15
and with the exception of a stint as a
corrections officer in Okeechobee, he
hasn't stopped since.
"Some people need a drink or ciga-
rette to relax, this is all I need," says
Lebron Jr., waving his clippers in the
air.
"Going into business is scary," but "it
helps when you have a good support
system. My family and I spent many
nights into the wee hours brainstorm-
ing," he recalled.
He said he couldn't have gotten
started without the help of his mother
Nilsa, cousin Pritelie and girlfriend Liz
who all helped with the design and
decoration of the business.
"Liz also designed and procured
the business cards, website and email
address," he said. "And of course, my
father, the guiding force that started the
ball rolling, keeps a watchful eye on the

ing from city to city doing art shows
became very difficult for him and so he
placed his works in a studio and started
teaching students.
"I love to paint the old-fashioned way
as much as possible, from a subject or
from my imagination." he said.
At 65, MacMillan is retired but still
going strong in painting and displaying
his art work, along with teaching.
MacMillan's art is on display until

finances and won't let me fail."
The Lebrons are not just commuting
business people. They fully intend to
get involved and become a part of the
community.
As for the future, Lebron Jr. believes
in the benefit of sports for young
people and wants to sponsor a team.
As for the business, he-has two chairs
in his shop now and wants to expand
to three chairs, with as many barbers.
The shop itself is meticulously clean, as
is the remodeled bathroom. Depending
on the time of day and/or the mood,
there may be a television playing in the
corner or there may be music playing
in the background.
Lebron Jr., in keeping with the retro
atmosphere, is planning on setting up
a couple of game tables for checkers
or perhaps chess for customers while
they're waiting.
Lebron Jr. is relatively young, but he
has an "old soul." He can and will con-
verse with anyone of any age. He com-
municates easily with young children,
teens and young adults, and just as
easily with older adults. Also, everyone
gets treated with respect and courtesy.
A sign of the times: A young mother
came in with her two young sons,
about 5 and 6 years old. At one time
the barbershop was primarily a father-
son experience; now it is just as likely
to be a mother-son or grandparent-son

Dec. 16.
His goal for his art show is not only
to sell paintings and showcase his
style of artistry, but to promote the Art
League so more young and older artists
will join and enhance their skills and
talents.
"Frostproof is the kind of community
you dream of." he said. "The library
was very friendly and accommodating,
allowing me to display my art."

experience.
No matter, the barbershop is still
a youngboy's place of wonderment,
unique aromas, magical chairs that go
up and down and spin around, buzzing
and clicking sounds as hair disappears
from your head and falls ever so softly
to the floor.
The young mother commented that
she was so glad that they were going
to have a full-service barbershop here
in Frostproof (all types of hair and
styles). Now she wouldn't have to go all
the way to the hair salon at the Lake
Wales Walmart. That's good not only
because of the additional expense (gas
and haircut cost), but it seemed every
time she found a stylist that she and
her boys liked, more likely than not the
next time they went, the stylist was no
longer working there.
There's more to being a good barber
than just a lot of training. The barber
knows how to moderate, officiate, and
stimulate conversations. He answers
the phone all the while moving around
the subject, sculpting a head of hair,
never missing a beat. Watching a Mas-
ter Barber is like watching a dancer or a
great boxer in the ring.
It all seems to be done so effortlessly.
The shop will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday through Saturday. For infor-
mation or an appointment, call (863)
873-0564 or (863) 443-9390.

the kids. That's why I volunteered my
time."
Just earlier that day, she had taken a
group of students to The Groves nursing
home in Lake Wales to deliver holiday
cheer.

A refreshing treat
PHOTO PROVIDED
Nothing refreshes like a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice. And thanks to the Frost-
proof Lions Club, those at Flywheeler Park earlier this month were able to enjoy just that.
For those who didn't want juice right there, they could also buy a bag of juice oranges, as
Don Forsythe, left, decided to do. Lions Club members on hand were Dick Armbruster and
Ernest Respress.

Bulldogs playoff stay is a short one

Berkeley Prep too much for Frostproofto contain

By BRIAN ACKLEY
: NE\ S \R'FROST PROOFNEW'S.NET
Berkeley Prep is known as a volley-
ball power, having won their 15th state
championship in that sport Thursday
,night.
At this rate, the football program
might not be far behind.

head down to drive for a little extra yardage
against Berkeley Prep Friday night in Tampa.

BRONIN

The host Buccaneers won their 1 Ith
straight game of the season last Friday
night in dropping Frostproof 41-6 in
the Bulldogs first playoff appearance in
three years.
Berkeley Prep scored touchdowns on
each of its first three possessions, and
was never threatened.
Each team's first possession of the
night set a theme that played out much
of the evening. Berkeley Prep took the
opening kickoff, and largely on the legs
of prized senior running back Nelson
Agholor, covered 60 yardsin just six
plays, with Agholor accounting for the
last 39 on runs of 25 and 14 yards for a
7-0 Bucs lead just 2:07 into the game.
Frostproof, meanwhile, went three
and out, and got off a short punt that
left the hosts starting their second
possession at the Bulldog 38. Agholor
converted a 4th-and-3 at the 31- with a
12 yard burst up the middle, and two
plays later quarterback Destin Nichols
found Christian Hardegree on a cross-
ing pattern from 17 yards out to put
Berkeley Prep up 14-0 with still 6:02 to
go in the first quarter.
A better punt after another Frostproof
three and out on its second possession
Sdid little to stem the Agholor onslaught.'

PLAYOFF
FROM PAGE 12
However, on a first down after Jake
Smith has picked up nine yards on a
4th-and-2, quarterback Zack Jenkins
threw an interception to end any pos-
sible threat.
One of the Bulldogs brightest
moments came a possession later,
sparked by a defensive stop on a
fourth down play by the Bucs deep in
Bulldog territory.
Not so surprisingly, Jake Smith ripped
of a 56-yard run to the Berkeley 20. The
touchdown was saved by, also not too

.to

Smith was one of the few offensive bright
spots, ripping off a 56-yard run late in the first
half, setting up Frostproof with a first-and-
goal, which unfortunately they could not
convert.

surprisingly, Agholor who caught Smith
from behind. Smith bullied ahead for
12 more on the next play to set up a
first-and goal at the eight, but four
running plays later, they turned the
ball over on downs after not getting any
closer than the five.
Frostproof's best moments of the
game came on their opening posses-
sion of the second half, holding the
ball for 16 plays and more than seven
minutes, only to see the drive stall at
the Berkeley 10. Smith had runs of 20
and seven yards on the possession,
and after picking up seven yards on a
second down play, was stopped for es-
sentially no gain on his next two carries
to end the threat.
Agholor ended any suspense two
players later, hitting paydirt on a 77-
yard run, to put the Bucs on top 28-0
late in the third quarter.
In the final minute of the third, Chris
Williams scored from 30 yards out to
increase the margin to 34-0, and he
added another score from eight yards
out early in the fourth to push the score
to 41-0, meaning the rest of the game
was played with a running clock.
Smith, who always plays hard regard-
less of the situation, scored on a 43-
yard touchdown run with 12.4 seconds
to play to provide the Bulldogs with
their only points
Frostproof finished the year at 5-6.
Agholor came into Friday night
averaging just under 150 yards a game
rushing and a with a total of 29 touch-
downs scored. The Berkeley defense
had only given up an average of seven
points a game this year, and pitched
four shutouts in the regular season.
He finished the game with 270 yards,
the vast majority of those in the first
half.
The Bulldogs did not complete a pass
in the game, fumbled three times, and
had one pass picked off.

PHOTOS BY K.M. THORNTON SR.

This wasn't exactly a common site last night in Tampa as Jake Smith stops Berkeley Prep running
back Nelson Agholor. Agholor, considered one of the nation's top running back recruits, scored
two touchdowns in the first quarter as the Bucaneers raced to a big early lead.

Unemployment

rate falls sharply

ByJEFF ROSLOW
JROSLOW @ P'OIKCOUNTYI)EMOCRAT.COM

The drop in October's unemploy-
ment figures was encouraging news
in the view of state officials and in
Polk County.
Stacy Campbell-Domineck, presi-
dent and CEO of Polk Works, said
the 0.7 percent drop in Polk from
September's figure shows modest
growth here, but added, "Our com-
munity still faces challenges in our
economic recovery, yet Polk Works is
encouraged as our unemployment
numbers continue to decline."
Florida's unemployment rate in
October fell to 10.1 percent, its low-
est level in 28 months. The
11.3 percent rate in Polk County
shows a decrease of 1.4 percent-
age points from the rate the county
posted in October 2010. Last month
the unemployment rate for Polk

County was 12 percent.
However, that is still higher than
the national average. The Polk
County rate was 1.2 percentage
points higher than the state rate
of 10.1 percent and 2.8 percentage
points above the national rate of
8.5 percent.
In the county, three of the 10
major industry groups gained em-
ployment over the year. These were
trade, transportation, and utilities,
which is up 800 jobs; education and
health services, up 400 jobs; and
leisure and hospitality, up 200 jobs.
Total nonagricultural employ-
ment in the Lakeland-Winter Haven
metro area was 192,100. The total
nonagricultural employment de-
creased by 0.7 percent over the year,
compared to a statewide increase of
1.3 percent, Polk Works reports.
In a labor force of 271,195, there
were 30,511 unemployed Polk
County residents.

LaChance is often

in the right place

at the right time

By DIANE NICHOLS
DrICHOLS @POLKCOUNTYDEMOCRAT.COM

While he doesn't wear a red cape or
have a giant "S" on his chest, many would
consider Polk County Sheriff's Detention
Deputy James LaChance their personal
hero. Besides showing great courage
and dedication to helping those in need,
LaChance has a habit of being at the right
lace at the right time and has a knack for
saving lives.
Originally from Canada,
LaChance, 44, became a
U.S. citizen and joined the
Marine Corps. After serving
his new country, he started
his career with the Polk
County Sheriff's Office in
LACHANCE June of 1995 as a detention
deputy for the county jail.
In 2006, he was transferred to the Trans-
portation Division which put the deputy
in close contact with several people who
needed help. It was then that it became
apparent that LaChance wore more than
his uniform and badge ... he sprouted the
wings of a guardian angel.
On Dec. 8,2008, while driving down
State Road 60 on his way home from work
in his personal vehicle, LaChance spotted
an overturned truck lying in a ditch. After
calling 911, the off-duty deputy inspected
the truck and found an unconscious man
in the driver's seat.
He performed a sternum rub on the
man which brought him back to con-
sciousness and then covered him with a
blanket. As the next few minutes ticked by,
waiting for help to arrive, LaChance stayed
by the man's side keeping him stabilized
and coherent. That day's brave act earned
LaChance the Meritorious Service Medal.
On Nov. 17, 2010, while returning to
Polk County on Interstate 75 in the PCSO

detention transport van, LaChance saw a
man erratically jumping in front of vehi-
cles on the interstate in what looked like
an attempted suicide. LaChance stopped
and quickly met with the Florida Highway
Patrol officer on scene who asked the
deputy to help subdue the man before he
injured himself or anyone else.
The endangered man's father joined
in with LaChance and the FHP officer
in trying to ward off disaster along with
the assistance of other law enforcement
personnel who appeared at the site. The
man was successfully captured and trans-
ported to a medical facility under the
Baker Act with no harm done to himself
or the many motorists on the interstate.
This act of courage led to LaChance being
awarded the Medal of Valor.
LaChance was named PCSO Detention
Deputy of the Year in 2007 in recogni-
tion of three separate incidents that year
during which the deputy stopped to assist
motorists who were injured in vehicle
crashes, and for providing medical care
and support until EMS arrived on scene.
The badged crusader had yet two
more opportunities this month to step
in and save the day. On Tuesday, Nov. 1,
LaChance was en route to Miami for a
prisoner transport.
He stopped in Jupiter to put gas in the
van when a swarm of Jupiter police patrol
units pulled into the parking lot. Officers
began trying to converse with a family
who appeared very upset, but clearly
there was a language barrier.
After one of the officers got on his radio
asking if anyone could translate French,
LaChance, being from Canada and fluent
in French, assisted the officers in com-
municating with the family. He soon
found they had their purses, luggage and
passports stolen after leaving their car
unlocked at the gas station en route to
Miami to board a cruise ship. Once the
statements were taken, LaChance stayed
to assist the officers with writing reports
and documenting information before
continuing on his way.
Two days later, LaChance would not
only once again be at the right place at
the rifht time, but he would now have

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd gives James LaChance a Medal of Honor Award in 2010.

the opportunity to save yet another life.
At 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, the deputy
was conducting a prisoner transport
from Avon Park Correctional Facility to
the Lee County Jail. While traveling the
interstate, he spotted a group of people
yelling by a body of water where a ve-
hicle was upside down, submerged up to
the car's tires. LaChance pulled over and
immediately jumped into the waist-deep
water and tried to rescue the people
inside. When nothing worked and the
doors and windows wouldn't budge, the
deputy shouted to the crowd around
him to get into the water so they could
all turn the car right-side-up. With the
help of a dozen men, the mission was
accomplished.
The car was filled with murky water
making it impossible to see the victims
inside, so LaChance busted a window and
found a screaming woman and a man
who remained unresponsive. LaChance
urged others to help him drag the man
out, then cleared the lifeless man's airway
and administered CPR until he began to
breathe. He then stayed with the man
until emergency responders arrived.
Once all was said and done, LaChance
got back into his van and continued on

to Lee County where he changed into dry
clothes and went about his business as if
it were just another day.
"Throughout my life, I've always been
blessed this way," said LaChance. "Even
when I was in the military in the Marine
Corps, something happened where I
probably shouldn't be here today. I was
scheduled to fly out on a helicopter escort
and for some reason I ran late and missed
the takeoff. Minutes later the copter
crashed and everyone on board was
killed. I honestly can't explain it."
Sheriff Grady Judd has hailed LaChance
as being a true testament to what an
outstanding deputy should be, saying
he never hesitates to go out of his way to
help others, even in the face of danger.
Despite such recognition and a
personnel file filled with accolades,
LaChance seems humble and is the
first to say he doesn't consider himself a
superhero at all.
"I just do what anyone else would do
when faced with these kinds of situa-
tions," said LaChance. "I know I've been
lucky and do seem to be where I'm really
needed for some reason but I only
wish this magic spell would help me to
pick the winning lottery numbers."

Frostproof girls princess for some prom goers
Fr. ro girl s s -

By GEORGE FRANICEVICH
NEWS@FROSTPROOFNEWS.NET
in the small town of Frost-
proof Kirsten Scarborough,
a young wisp of a girl, mild-
mannered, and unassuming,
perceived a "social injustice" in
her high school.
A "social injustice" she deter-
mined to correct even if it meant
mobilizing an army of volunteers.
Those volunteers, who for lack of
the space to list them all individ-
ually, shall from here on, forever
be known as "Kirsten's Angels."
In these austere times, Scar-
borough and her Angels through
.a vehicle known as the "Princess
Project" are providing a bright
shining ray of hope. Hope for
those high school juniors and
seniors, who due to the expense,
are being economically excluded
from attending their high school
proms. .
The cost of the tickets, tux-
edo, corsage, and limousine is
prohibitive. But the cost of the
prom gown, which often exceeds
$300, may be the biggest stum-
bling block of all.
The "Princess Project" was
born when Scarborough decided
that her fellow students were not
going to forgo this right of pas-
sage and miss their prom simply
for economic reasons.
With the help of family,
friends, and the support of the
Frostproof Middle Senior High
School's teachers, she started
to collect "gently used" prom
gowns and other accessories.
Nancy DeMarco, Frostproof's
Tile One Facilitator, as well as
Scarborough's Princess Project
coordinator, consular, and con-
fidant explained that Frostproof
Middle Senior High School is a
Tide One School, which means
that it has a high percentage
of students from low-income
families, who could use this help.

DeMarco has made arraige-
ments for storage of the gowns
and other attire at the school.
"Teachers will be protecting
the donated gowns in their
storage areas," she said" At
this point, she said, "contribu-
tions of dress iacks would be
appreciated."
Now just as important as
what liss Scarborough and her
Angels are doing, is how they are
doing it. There are no forms to
be filled out or probing ques-
tions to be answered, nor any
drug tests to be taken.
"There really is no criteria. If
the girls feel that they can not
afford a dress or just want to pick
out a dress from The Princess
Project, we leave it up to them
to decide if they would like to
participate," Scarborough said.
"We don't ask if they can afford
to buy a gown."
Last year The Princess Proj-
ect collected over 300 gently
used prom gowns and put on a
fashion show highlighting all the
dresses, purses, shoes and other
accessories they gathered.
This year, as was done last
year, the dresses will be dis-
played on racks, by size. Also dis-
played will be the purses, shoes
and other donated accessories.
"Students from other schools
are always welcome to attend
the event, with the stipula-
tion that Frostproof students
will have the first choice of the
items," she added.
Last year Scarborough visited
high schools within Polk County
plus Avon Park High School in
Highlands count, which she
visited two or three times to give
their students chance to partici-
pate. Also the Princess Project
supplied gowns to Fort Meade
High School for some of their
girls to try and wear.
Scarborough relies heavily on
the willing help of her family.

For instance her mother, Tina,
and her mother's friends, many
of whom are teachers at nearby
high schools spread the word to
students that may be interested
in participating in the Princess
Project as a donor or as someone
in need.
Her Grandmother, Beverly
and her Grandmother's friends
provide mending, tailoring, or
other fixing that the donated
items may require. The men in
the family do the heavy lifting
and her brother Ryan, when
not lifting, last year acted as an
escort for the models and may
be drafted again this year. Then
there are the aunts, uncles,
cousins and nieces, all joining
together and doing everything
from modeling to cleaning.
Last year, Lakeland's Keiser
University helped by publiciz-
ing the Princess Project on their
website which brought in an
additional 30 gowns that they
donated.
Kirsten's mother tells about
"the anonymous donor who
donated $2000 for "guy" related
costs (tuxes, tickets etc.) so that
the boys wouldn't be left out."
Donations came from the
Good Shepherd Thrift Shop
in Lake Wales and Frostproof
Care Center, as well as a box of
dresses from the students at
Lakeland's George lenkins High
School.
Howell & Thomhill Law Of-
fice, and Fields Huston Cadillac
Buick acted as drop-off points
for donated items.
Angelique's Bridal donated
30 pairs of new shoes. Alady
donated some beautiful beaded
handbags from the 30's and 40's.
The date for this year's Prin-
cess Project fashion show has
not been set yet. At this time
Scarborough is recruiting vol-
unteers and seeking gowns and
other donations. She also hopes

From left, Kirsten Scarborough, Marisol Espinoza and Chloe Cash show dresses
they have designed. Marisol and Chloe have jumped on board this year to
give Kirsten a hand.

to expand the Princess Project
into the neighboring counties of
Highlands and Hardee, as well as
throughout Polk County.
One of the Kirsten's Angels
who wished to remain anony-
mous put it best, when he
said. "If there's one thing weve
learned in the past few years, it's
that it only takes-a few people
in key positions to destroy what
the multitudes have built, but,
it takes an army to rebuild the
good that was destroyed".
So who is Kirsten Scarbor-
ough and Awhat does she do
when she and her Angels are not
out "Spreading the Good"? Well,
she plays soccer and tennis.
She's a member of the fellow-
ship of Christian Athletes. She's
an honor student and attends
college classes in addition to
her high school classes. And last
but not least she's a member of

the Future Farmer's of America.
Note: she keeps cows over at her
grandmother's place.
As for her future, she hopes to
study law at Stetson University
to specialize in agricultural law.'
SThose cows are going to be well
represented.
In addition to prom attire,
shoes, purses and accessories,
the Princess Project urgently
need clothing racks. Also any
cash donations would be greatly
appreciated, because they would
help defray the costs of such
things as tuxedo rentals and
tickers,.etc. Remember, all dona-
tions are tax deductible.
Anyone wishing to donate or
in any way help out the Princess
Project may contact Frostproof
Middle Senior High School's
DeMarco at (863) 635-7809 or
Kirsten and hermother Tina who
can be reached at (863) 635-5084.

Antonio is a regular kid

7-year-old with brain condition leads normal life,

mom says others may unknowingly have condition

Chiari Malformation.
It's a lengthy-sounding diagnosis
for such a small boy.
But Antonio Nicolas takes it in
stride. Regardless of the piece of bone
removed at the base of his skull, his
favorite things are still baseball, soc-
cer and recess.
And in spite of his Mom's concern
and self-described "over protective-
ness," she lets him be what he wants
to be: a regular kid.
Chiari Malformations are structural
defects in the cerebellum, the part of
the brain that controls balance. When
the indented bony space at the lower
rear of the skull is smaller than nor-

mal, the cerebellum and brainstem
can be pushed downward.
The resulting pressure on the
cerebellum can block the flow of
cerebrospinal fluid (the liquid that
surrounds and protects the brain
and spinal cord) and according to
The National Institute of Neurologi-
cal Disorders and Stroke, can cause a
range of symptoms including dizzi-
ness, muscle weakness, numbness,
vision problems, headache, and
problems with balance and coordina-
tion. Surgery to remove bone at the
pressure site is often required.
Seven-year-old Antonio, a student
at Hillcrest Elementary in Lake Wales,
suffered symptoms for three years
before he was diagnosed with Chiari.

ground in Lake Wales. In spite of his serious condition, Chiari Malformation, Antonio is "a regular
kid," according to his Mom Jerri.

a little less painful.
Thinking back to
the onset, Anto-
nio's first symp-
tom was a scary
one, mom Jerri
said. Antonio,
then in Pre-kin-
dergarten, passed
out at school
around 1 p.m. and
did not awaken
until 9 a.m. the
next morning, in
the hospital.
"It appeared to
be a seizure," said
Jerri, and the mys-
terious symptoms
struck again and
again.
"The pain would
be so bad he'd beg
me to help him
stop it," jerri said.
"It still makes me
cry to remember
that. I felt so bad
that I couldn't
help him."

Antonio Nicolas, a first grader at Hillcrest Elementary School in Lake
Wales, doesn't let his rare neurological condition, Chiari Malformation,
slow him down at all. His hobbies are soccer, baseball and recess. His
mom, Jerri, wants to get the word out about Chiai, thinking there may
be some who have not been properly diagnosed.

nervous system.
After Antonio's surgery, the fam-
ily met with the first grade class at
Hillcrest to explain the seriousness of
his condition. With the bone miss-
ing, there could be no rough horse-
play, there could be no bullying, no
hitting. "The school has been great,"
lerri said. A teacher at Hillcrest has
the same condition, rare though it is.
Although the surgery helped, Anto-
nio still has frequent pain in his legs,
from his hips down, Jerri said, which
put him in a wheelchair for about a
month. You won't hear him complain,
though. "He missed so much school
last year because of the surgery and
trips to the doctor, that he had to be
held back," lerri said. "And he loves
school, so if he's hurting, he won't
always tell us."
How does he cope with the pain?
"I just think about something else,"
Antonio said.
Rafael and Jerri Nicolas have two
daughters as well; Kellee, 10 and
Diana, 9. Although it siblings of a
seriously ill child sometimes feel
ignored or resentful, it's obvious from

the giggles and wiggles of these three
that they are all about fun.
As they make the rounds of the
playground equipment at "Barney's
Dream" park, one would never know
what the family.went through for
three years.
Jerri feels, however, that she.needs
to get the word out about Chiari
because many people with symptoms
don't know what they have, or have
been.misdiagnosed. The disorder is
sometimes genetic and sometimes
caused by trauma. In Antonio's case
they are not sure which, because a
neighbor struck his head hard with a
golf club when he was a toddler.
There are three subtypes of Chiari.
Medications may ease certain symp-
toms, such as pain. More than one
surgery may be needed to treat the
condition.
There are a number of websites on-
line with further information which
can be called up by typing "Chiari
Malformation" into the search area:
"I go online every day, and learn
something new every time," Jerri said.

Gas reduction has no effect on energy supplies

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am in my
80s and have a problem. I had a car
accident three years ago. Since then, I
pass gas most of the rime, and I can't
hold it in. I am very embarrassed to go
out of the house .
Please tell me what causes it, or what
I can do to prevent it. Anon.
ANSWER: Flatulence, the passage of
rectal gas, occurs 10 to 20 times a day
for almost everyone. Some of that gas
comes from swallowed air. Eat food
slowly to lessen the chances of getting
air into the digestive tract. Most of the
gas is due to the fermentation of foods
by bacteria in the colon. A few illnesses
are associated with excessive flatu- ,
lence celiac disease and pancreatic
insufficiency being two examples. The
pancreas supplies enzymes to digest
food. Without those enzymes, bacteria
digest the food. I can't implicate the car
accident as a cause.
Make a few adjustments to your
diet. I'll name foods that are the most
troublesome. Don't eliminate all of
them at once. Pick two or three, and
keep them out of your diet for two
weeks. If you don't note a reduction
in gas by two weeks, start eating those
foods again and eliminate three others.
Milk products, including cheeses and
ice cream, fruits and carbonated bever-
ages are three foodstuffs to eliminate in
trial one. After two weeks, if there's no
whiff of change, go back to eating those
foods, and stop eating beans, peas and
pastas. Ifa third trial is necessary, get
rid of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
Brussels sprouts and lentils are other
gas producers. If you note that you are
gassy after particular foods, then erase
them from your diet.
Have you tried Gas-X, Phazyme or

Beano? Do so.
If all this comes to naught, other
options are available. Flat-D Innova-
tions, Inc. makes a pad that is inserted
into the underwear to absorb gas. The
toll-free number is 866-354-0056 and
their website is www.flat-d.com. The
Under-Tec Corporation makes different
products that soak up gas. Its toll-free
numbers 888-433-5913 and its web-
site is www.under-tec.com. If you have
no computer, surely a friend or rela-
tive does. You can see pictures of these
products online.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother
had severe abdominal pain. I called
an ambulance. When the paramedics
arrived, she started gasping and closed
her eyes. They said she had a seizure
and went into cardiac arrest. In the
emergency room, the doctor said she
probably had a ruptured aortic aneu-
rysm. The death certificate said she
had a myocardial infarct (heart attack).
Which do youthink it was? D.J.
ANSWER: If an autopsy was done, it
will provide the definitive, answer. Any
tests done in the ER also would help
make a diagnosis. The severe abdomi-
nal pain suggests an aneurysm. The
pain of a heart attack can be felt in
many places, not just the chest. It can
be centered in the abdomen. I have to

go with the death certificate. The doctor
who signed it must have had evidence
for the heart attack cause. You might be
able to contact him about his reasons
for believing that.
The booklet on heart attacks ex-
plains their cause and their treatments.

check or money order (no cash) for

printed name and address. Please allow
four weeks for delivery.

joint in my foot. Just by stepping on the

foot when getting out of bed, I broke
two bones. I've been a diabetic for 45
years. Information is deeply appreci-
ated. L.M.
ANSWER: A Charcot joint is one that
has been damaged and deformed be-
cause the nerves to that joint no longer
bring pain signals to the brain. The
foot, therefore, doesn't make adjust-
ments that it would make if it felt pain.
Repeated trauma to the joint and bones
promotes fractures and distortion of
the joint and bones. Diabetes is usually
the cause of the nerve malfunction. No
medicine restores the foot to health.
Braces and splints, however, stabilize
the foot and make it more functional.

USF gets $60 million more to study diabetes

By RICHARD MARTIN
ST. PETERSBURG TIMES
The University of South Florida added
to its already-impressive tally of dia-
betes research dollars on Monday with
the announcement it has received two
more grants totaling nearly $60 million.
The grants come on top of the more
than $400 million USF has received in
the past decade most of it from the
National Institutes of Health to study
diabetes, a condition that afflicts more
than 23 million Americans of all ages.
No other research institution has
received as much NIH funding for type 1
diabetes as USE said Jeffrey Krischer, di-
rector of the university's diabetes center.
"It shows we have the best science,

the best leadership," said Krischer,
whom many credit for bringing in the
sizable grants.
The first grant announced Monday
was a $3.5 million award from the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,
which will be tsed for a study examin-
ing whether early diagnosis and treat-
ment of the disease results in better
long-term outcomes for patients.
The second, a $55.9 million grant
from the NIH, will help continue USF's
participation in an ambitious study
of more than 8,000 youngsters from
around the world who have been identi-
fied as being genetically at higher risk of
getting the disease.
The Environmental Determinants
of type 1 Diabetes in Youth, or TEDDY,

study began several years ago with the
screening of more than 250,00( new-
borns in six countries, and eventually.
identified 8,000 babies who would be
followed for 15 years.
Diabetes is a disease in which the
body fails to produce insulin to prop-
erly control blood sugar. Most people
who have it have the type 2 form of the
disease, which is often associated with
obesity.
But about 5 to 10 percent have the
more serious type 1, for which the cause
is unknown.
"Our goal is to prevent people from
getting it," said Dr. Stephen Klasko,
dean of the USF College of Medicine.
"And I think we're closer than ever to
that."

The $3.5 million grant from the Juve-
nile Diabetes Research Foundation was
the third grant the national group has
awarded to USE and the largest to date,
said Carolyn Boos, executive director of
its Tampa Bay.chapter.
"That's a testament to the incredible
work that they're doing there," Boos
said.
USF officials announced the grants
during a ceremony to mark the official
opening of the school's new diabetes
center, a 10,000-square-foot facility
in the Carol & Frank Morsani Center
for Advanced Healthcare on campus.
Among those in attendance were
several university trustees, U.S: Rep.
Kathy Castor and Tampa Mayor Bob
Buckhorn.

Tips for people with diabetes

By WARREN RICHARDSON
CORRESPONDENT

As the old Andy Williams' song goes, "It's-
the most wonderful time of the year," unless
you're a type 2 diabetic. That bountiful sup-
ply of aroma-tempting food and eye-beck-
oning desserts is like a Las Vegas craps table
to a gambling junkie. But that shouldn't
prevent people with type 2 diabetes from
sitting forlorn on the sidelines while family
and friends enjoy the feast.
According to the U.S. Office of Disease
Prevention and Health Promotion, there are
some simple tips to ensure people with
type 2 diabetes can'enjoy the holiday feasts.

Have cut-up vegetables with a low-
calorie dip for a snack before the big
meal.
Limit the portions of starchy veg-
etables like potatoes, corn and peas and
instead eat non-starchy vegetables like
green beahs, Brussels sprouts and carrots.
Keep portions of foods high in sodium
or saturated fat (like gravy) small. If
possible, try to avoid saturated fat.
Fill half your plateiwith vegetables
and fruits. Choose nutritious foods like
turkey and whole-grain bread for the rest.
Leave room for your favorite foods.
For example, if stuffing is your favorite,
plan to skip the mashed potatoes.

by The Polk County Democrat, The Fort Meade Leader,
The Lake Wales News and The Frostproof News.
A number of local businesses participated in
-this year's event. Customers registered there for the
drawings held on Monday, Nov. 21, and one lucky
winner was drawn from each location. Each winner
received a $15 giftcard from Publix or in Fort Meade,
from Fowler's Grocery, so even vegetarians could buy
Thanksgiving feast food.
Winners in Lake Wales were: Allstate, Harry
DeCosey; Cash Connection, Bronson Wolford; Lake
Wales Chamber of Commerce, Shirley Hall; Batteries
Plus, Troy Kipe; Lori Drapers, Martha Evans; Rent King,
Carole Williams; We Elderly Care, Rickie Settle; Rogers
and Walker Gun Shop, Zachary Sharpe; and Dusty's
Camper World, Raymond Couture.

It is important to understand warning signs.

The symptoms of a stroke include: sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, sudden trouble speaking
or understanding conversation, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or
loss of balance or coordination, and/or sudden severe headache with no known cause.

If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1, and ask to be taken to Florida Hospital.

The rt Meade leader

The Lake

The Plk County Democrat
Welcome to our new and improved newspapers. We have been working hard during the
past few months to bring you more local news and a more attractive product. Our staff
had made several improvements that I would like to share with you.

A SECOND DAY OF YOUR HOMETOWN PAPER
We now publish our paper every Wednesday and Saturday. That means you can keep up with
Polk County news twice a week and the news you receive is much more timely.
MORE POLICE AND GOVERNMENT NEWS
It is now easier to tell how safe our community is and where crime is being committed.
MORE COMMUNITY DISCUSSION
We have added columns from our city manager, local government watchdogs, the chief of police and civic leaders.
Your hometown paper is striving to be the marketplace for local ideas and commentary.
A SEPARATE CLASSIFIED SECTION TWICE A WEEK
We've added a classified section with employment ads, garage sales and other categories
to make shopping for those hard to get items even easier.
FREE CLASSIFIED ADS
If you have an item to sell and the cost is less than $500, you don't have to give us a dime. They are absolutely free.

MORE LOCAL SPORTS
We have expanded (almost doubled) our local sports coverage. We have been hard at work working
with local coaches and sports organizations and we now have drastically increased the number
of photos and sports results we publish each week.
THE BEST BUSINESS AND SERVICE DIRECTORY FOR POLK COUNTY
Looking for an electrician, lawn service and painter?
Our business and service directory is full ofbusinesses who can fit the bill.
We are proud of our recent improvements but know that there are many things to be done.
We would love to hear from you with your ideas.
If you think there is something we could do to improve our product, give us a call. I would love to hear your ideas.

Sincerely,
Jim Gouvellis
