On Dec. 11, family, friends and colleagues of Madison Police Sgt.
Nathan Curtis gathered at the department for a lunch in honor of his
years of fine service, and to wish him a safe and prosperous move to
San Diego, Cal., where he will be joining Homeland Security's Immi-
gration Customs Enforcement (ICE) unit.
"It's something I've always wanted to do," Curtis, a 13-year veteran
with the Madison Police Department noted. "I feel like the Lord is call-
ing me to do this, so I've got to do what's in His plan,"
Curtis has always aspired to work at the federal level of law en-
forcement, a commitment demonstrated by the arduous two-year
process he encountered en route to the Homeland Security position.
Even as far back as the beginning of his education at North Florida
Community College, and later progressing through the acquisition of
his law enforcement certifications and bachelor's degree, Curtis was al-
ways building for this great opportunity.
Each of his progressive responsibilities, from investigations to serv-
ing on the Madison Drug Task Force, was a stepping-stone for Curtis.
So now with wife Shannon, and daughters, Savannah (5), Sydney (3)
and Sadie (three months), Curtis has gone west with the best wishes
and prayers of a grateful community. In additional recognition of his
achievements, Madison Police Chief Rick Davis presented Curtis a
plaque and a handshake for a job well done and to congratulate him for
the great work yet to come.

Stones Landing On

The Ground

Where Was the man, I have often asked?
Was he in the crowd of accusers, hiding behind self-
righteousness' mask?'
"He who is without sin among you," the Master in-
toned,
"Let it be he that casts the first stone."
The accusers looked at the words written in the sand,
Were the words written sins that applied to each man?
The thoughts and intents.of their hearts had been re-
vealed,
Sins brought to light that darkness thought it had con-
cealed,
"Where are those who seek to condemn you," the Mas-
ter asked,
"There is no one," the woman answered, the hour of
judgment passed,
"Neither do I condemn you," the Lord gently said,
"Go and sin no more," by the Lord of all her soul had
been fed,
Too many times, there are those who think they do no
wrong
And want to see others standing before God's white
throne,
They want to see God punish them through the lake of
fire,
But don't realize how close they are to their own fu-
neral pyre,
I must admit so many times that I have indeed been
wrong,
But so many now seem to want to throw the first stone;
When they pick up the stones and Jesus writes in the
sand,
I wonder where their stones may actually land,
Will He write the words, "Lies, stealing, and self-right-
eous pride,"
Will those guilty of the sins run and hide?
Will their rocks land with a thud upon the grass,
As they see their own hearts unmasked,
Where are my accusers, I now stand and ask,
Are they hiding in the church behind self-righteous-
ness' mask?
Listen closely, what is that sound,
Is it the sound of stones landing on the ground?

Rails To Trails Is Not

Just Fun, It Is Life
Dear Editor:
I feel I must write this letter to express my disap-
pointment with a recent decision made by our county
commissioners in regards to the proposed completion of
the Four Freedoms Trail. I taught Physical Education in
this county for 35 years and personally witnessed the
steady decline in the health of our students. While I
have no percentages to quote, I saw the weight of many
go up to the point of obesity I also saw an increase in the
incidence 6f diabetes and hypertension. I know that all
this leads to major health issues in years to come. The
one best prevention we have available to our population
is exercise on a regular basis. By providing the means to
exercise we are also providing the means to correct
some of the aforementioned health problems and pre-
vent these problems for future generations. I feel that it
is imperative that we encourage all people to get in-
volved in some form of exercise and the Rails to Trails
program is a golden opportunity to do so. Therefore, if
you are interested in seeing this project completed I en-
'courage you to call your county commissioner and ask
them to approve its completion.

New Year
Well, folks, the holidays are over once again, at least
for a month or so. Wal-Mart is already stocking shelves
for Valentine's Day.
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas despite the
economic crisis and had a chance to get together with
family and friends. To ring in the new year 2009!. Our
family seemed to have a wonderful holiday season; es-

N-E-W Y-E-A-R
New Year brings a time for change, we look forward
to making resolutions and starting anew. Alice Henne-
man, Extension Nutrition Specialist in Nebraska shares
a new way to express Happy New Year, so I thought I
would pass it 'along.
H-ealth Make health a priority this year. Health
should be more than the absence of disease read on for
ideas.
A-ttitude A positive attitude may not be a cure,
however, thinking positive can help you deal with mis-
fortune, make the most of your situation and help you
enjoy life more.
P hysical activity -.The U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services 2008 recommends adults get 2 '/
hours of moderate physical activity each week. A great
way to do this is to begin a walking routine. Think
about adding some strength training exercises and al-
ternate days. between walking and weight lifting.
P -eople -- Numerous studies indicate social net-
works, whether formal (such as a church or social club)
or informal (friends), make people less vulnerable to ill
health and premature death. Be wary, however, of social
support that drains you through people being too de-
manding or encouraging you to engage in harmful be-
haviors.
Y our body -- Schedule physical checkups as need-
ed: eyes, teeth, mammogram, a general physical, etc.
Regular routine screenings play an important role in,
your health and well-being.
N -o! -- Rather than adding a time management to
your list of things to do. Consider starting a "don't do"
list. You may discover doing less than can bring more
enjoyment to your life. Especially if doing less allows
you to spend time doing niore to contribute to your
health and happiness and that of family and friends.
-E at healthy MyPyramid.gov recommends: "To
move to a healthier weight, you need to make smart
choices form every food group. Smart choices are the
foods with the lowest amounts of solid fats or added sug-
ars: for example, fat-free (skim) milk instead of whole
milk and unsweetened rather than sweetened apple-
sauce. Also, co der howhfood was prepared. For ex-
ample, choose skinless'bake: d icken instead of friend
and choose fresh fruit instead of a fruit pastry'
W isdom -- Take time to listen to your own body.
Rather than set your goals based on how fast other peo-
ple walk or jog, how little sleep others can get by on or
how much someone else eats, concentrate on what
makes you healthy
Y our hands The Center for Disease Control and
Prevention recommends keeping your hands clean to
prevent the spread of infection and illness. Wash your
hands often with soap and water for 15-20 seconds.
E nough sleep Working too much and sleeping too
little takes a serious toll on people's lives. Cut back on
other activities rather than cutting back on sleep may be
more effective in enhancing the quality of your life.
A void portion distortion -- Rather than worry so
much about "what" you eat, consider "how much" you
eat. Downsize your portion sizes. Serve food on small
plates. Eat from plates and bowls rather than packages
and bags, so you see how much you're eating.
R eading material Consider the source before
starting a new drastic diet or exercise plan. Beware. of
a promise for quick, drastic results, or plans that rely
solely on testimonials or statements.

Love of Madison

Iamblins
Christmas is always wonderful, isn't it? Though
we go through the hustle and bustle pre-Christmas
time of wondering if we're going to get to the big
day with our sanity intact sometimes, we always do
and we love it. And how we love the family gather-
ing, the big feast, Santa's presents and the fun. Most
especially the delighted squeals of the children as
they tear into the pretty packages which St.
Nicholas left under the beautifully decorated tree.
And a perfect Norman Rockwell scene is displayed
in the loving smiles of the watching parents. After
all, Christmas is for children-- originated by the
birth of the Christ \Child and that should never be
forgotten.
I hope all of you enjoyed Christmas as much as I
did. Though no small children were present, my
three "babies" came "home for Christmas" and were
there for three days. We had a wonderful time. Most
of the family had spent Thanksgiving together at
Joan's in Atlanta so we had a family reunion then.
I know there are many people with big hearts, es-
pecially during Christmas, but also during all times
of the year and I want to thank the following special
people who so generously helped me when my hot
water heater decided 20 years was long enough to
work. I came back from Atlanta and had no hot wa-
ter and no money with which to replace Old Faith-
ful, so I called Progress Energy only to find out I had
to be on their program for 30 days to be eligible.
Then I called Elaine Hartley of Senior Citizens who
immediately put the wheels in action to help me and
another client.
To make a long story short, the Glen Friths of
Studstill's gave two hot water heaters for two ladies
who badly needed hot baths! Rev. Rich Quackenbush
and 'theICAN Christian Organization paid for the
plumber, Wesley Thompson, who was kind enough to
install mine as soon as it was available which was
way late evening after his working all day. He also
called to see if it was okay the next day. I can't thank
all of these people enough and hope to repay them
some how some day.
Here's wishing to everyone a happy and prosper-
ous New Year!' .

on. Miracles were for others, she could not show,
fear, and no one would know if she could help it,
how bad it really was.
But what this mother didn't know was how mir-
acles work. Like a gentle waft of pine needles and
cinnamon scented cheer, miracles have a way of'
floating above one's head. They drift then settle,
reaching those that feel their power.'Starting out as
a gentle whisper, they grow and take on a life of
their own, becoming stronger forces than those they
combat. Miracles survive.
Not many knew this- mother's plight, and of
those that did, not all let on. They saw her needs and
were gentle with her pride. Phone calls were made
and angels gathered. The Miracle began to grow,
quietly at first until it gained strength enough to
move the boulders that had fallen in her path. It
grew until it was strong enough to overtake her
sense of guilt that she must undo'all the sorrows she
had somehow birthed. It grew until it was strong
enough to reach her and her girls in the world she
meant to close them off from. It grew and grew and
grew.
SA miracle happened to a
single mother this

Christmas, just one in many trying to make-her way,
on the path of life. Angels in the community
watched and smiled as without a need for credit and
honor they did what they saw must be done to help
one woman remember why she came to Madison.
They did not ask for honor or acknowledgement,
these angels brought forth the miracle out of love.
These angels have names that cannot be mentioned;
yet they know who they are just the same.
A single mother, newly implanted and starting to
grow in Madison watchedas what she thought could
never happen, did. A community came together,
reaching out its heart and hand, sweeping her and
her girls on a wave of Yuletide. A tree was decorat-
ed, presents given and little ones' eyes lit with the
joy of the season. There was food on the table and
love all around. A single mother,, scared and stub-
born, had battled, lost, and sought her own way out
of the darkness. Because of angels, she slept well

A Madison man was arrested for retail theft on Fri-
day, Dec. 26.
According to a Madison Police Department report,
Patrolmen Reggie Alexander and David Myers were dis-
patched to a store at approximately 1 p.m.
Upon the officers' arrival, witnesses said that Allen

cups of ice and had two empty cups. He was told that he
would have to pay for the empty cups. He paid for all

McCollum Calls On Local

Governments, Law Enforcement

And School Districts To Make

Enhanced Sunshine A

New Year's Resolution
Attorney General Bill McCollum today called
on local governments, sheriffs and school dis-
tricts to make government transparency their
New Year's Resolution and to commit to providing
enhanced access to information before Sunshine
Sunday in March.
In a letter sent to Florida's sheriffs, county
commissions and school boards, the Attorney
General reminded local leaders that with ad-
vances in technology, government in the sunshine
can be as easy as uploading information to public
websites.
"As Florida is a national leader in providing
public access to government records, merely re-
sponding to requests is no longer sufficient in
light of the technological advances which make it
infinitely easier, cheaper and more efficient to do
so," wrote Attorney General McCollum. "Open
government is not only good government; it is the
right of the tax-paying public."
The Attorney General encouraged government
and school officials to immediately place on their
websites the email address and phone number for
their public records points of contact.
Additionally, the Attorney General asked the
government leaders to have their contracts and
current budgets posted online in time for Sun-
shine Week, which starts on March 15. 9.
To ensure that open government remains a top
priority in the state, the Attorney General also
asked the sheriffs, county commissions and
school boards to ensure their staff members re-
ceive proper training on Florida's Sunshine Law,
and he announced that the Attorney General's Of-
fice is currently working on an enhanced website
and online training resources -.easily accessible
and free of charge to assist local governments.
The training materials should be available over
the next few months.
More information about the Attorney Gener-
al's open government initiatives is available on-
line at: http://myfloridalegal.com/sunshine.

Needy Families Bring Christmas Cheer To Hundreds

By Michael Curtis
Greene Publishing, Inc.

Madison County Board of County Commissioners to
hear Needy Families of Madison County get approved
as the Recycle-4-Charity program recipient, they were
visibly moved. That sentiment, however, was taken to
whole new heights when the group got to see the fruits
of this labor of love.

kets and soaring gas prices, many people found them-
selves in need more this year than ever before. Needy
Families of Madison County had an outpouring of love
and generosity from those that could give so the chil-
dren of our county would have a joyful Christmas."
On Thursday and Friday, Dec. 18-19, an amazing,
286 families picked up toys and books for 714 children.
The tremendous undertaking was a team effort and or-

Christ's if you are saved is because of what: is beneath
you, your spiritual foundation. What is beside you, the
Hold Spirit. What is with you, Resound soul. What is be-
fore you, Gods Provision. What is upon you, Gods
anointment. What follows you, Gods goodness and mer-
cy And what is beyond you, Heaven.

Oct. 30 marked the
close of another exciting
season of Madison Acade-
my soccer. Approximately
45 first through fifth
grade students participat-
ed in this year's program.
Students were divided
into three divisions: the
4K-5K division, the first
through second grade di-
vision, and the third
through fifth grade divi-

sion.
Following group
warm-ups, students
would divide into teams
within their divisions
and participate in a gruel-
ing 45-minute match up.
This year, concessions
were sold by the eighth
grade class during each
game, with the proceeds
going toward the upcom-
ing eighth grade trip to

Washington, D.C. The
concession stand was the
highlight of many of the
younger players' evening.
The season ended
with a player and family
cook-out and cake auc-
tion. Madison Academy
would like to thank the
many individuals who do-
nated their time and re-
sources to help make this
soccer season a success.

NFCC's Debbie Bass Thanks Senator Davis

For Her Fight For Women's Rights

Bass Is Keynote Speaker At Luncheon Honoring
Senator Helen Gordon Davis

North Florida Com-
munity College's Dis-
placed Homemaker Pro-
gram Coordinator Debbie
Bass was a keynote speak-
er at a recent luncheon
held in Tampa, Oct. 16,
honoring Florida senator
and women rights activist
Helen Gordon Davis.
Davis has been a champi-
on for women's rights
since the early 70's.
After starting Flori-
da's first women's center
in 1971, Davis went on to
lobby for the Displaced
Homemaker Act and the
Marriage License trust
fund for spouse abuse
centers.
Through her contin-
ued dedication, she en-

couraged legislature to
allow pregnant students
to remain in school, and
later provided support
for maternity and pater-
nity leave for state em-
ployees.
"Senator Davis, you
could not have possibly
known the far-reaching
effects of the visionary
legislation you sponsored
in the mid-70's that estab-
lished the Displaced
Homemaker Program,"
said Bass during her ad-
dress at the luncheon.
"Now, over 30 years and
thousands of women lat-
er, these programs are
still serving women over
35 who have been
through life-changing sit-

uations like divorce, sep-
aration, welfare depen-
dence, or widow-
hood. Thanks to you,
these women now have
opportunities to reenter
life more fully equipped
to be primary breadwin-
ners. The skills, educa-
tion and support they re-
ceive in our programs
around the state enable
them to move forward
with confidence."
Davis was the first
woman elected from Hills-
borough County to the
Florida House of Repre-
sentatives in 1974. She
was reelected for six con-
secutive terms. In 1988,
she was elected to the
Florida Senate.

New ACA Sports Awards Procedure

By Fran Hunt
Specialfrom the Monticello News
Aucilla Christian Academy Principal
Richard Finlayson announced last week
that the ACA procedure for awarding
their young champion athletes each year
has changed.
In the past, both varsity and junior
varsity football players received awards
for best offensive player, best
defensive player and most valuable play-
er shortly after the end of the .
season, while athletes in all other sports
were awarded during the annual Sport
Banquet, held at the First United
Methodist Church Fellowship Hall every
year.
"Due to the size of the hall and the

numerous athletes and their family mem-
bers, this year, all junior varsity athletes
will receive their awards after each par-
ticular sport during the regular school
year, rather than at the banquet, and the
varsity football players will-this year-
receive their awards during the banquet.
With the changes in mind, the junior
varsity football players receiving awards
this year are Hans Sorensen, best offen-
sive player; Jared Jackson, best defensive
player; and Bradley Holm, most valuable
player.
Finlayson said he, the coaches and
staff send congratulations to these fine
young athletes for their fine performances
during the season and their representa-
tion of Aucilla Christian Academy

A New Year's wel-
come to all Capricorn
shepherds, Aquarian
bearers and Blue Moon
believers. Committing
herself to a fresh start,
this month's Ice Moon
isn't as cold as she may
appear, as she is the
bearer of Father
Time's little babe.
Ringing in 2009, this
year has an unusual
amount of full moon
fever and may just
shed her extra light in
some extraordinary
ways. Happy new year,
and may all bright
dreams begin to become
reality.
January looks to be
starting out briskly this
turn, with temperatures
rising and falling like
stars in'a crisp winter sky
As celebrations for the up-
coming year are planned,
resolutions are being
made and improvements
implemented. For those of
the garden variety, it may
be a bit too nippy still to
start budding beauties, but
tending those already
there is the order of busi-
ness. Shrubs must be
pruned and bedded bulbs
tenderly covered to keep
them from feeling the
sting of Frost's bite.
"There's really not
much you can do with
grass," says Hugh Sherrod
of Hugh's Lawn Care &
Tree Service. "Rye grass
maybe does a little better
than the others, but they
pretty much all die down.
It's the flowers and fruit
trees you want to make
sure you cover in case the
temperatures drop. Or-
ange trees, any plants that
are, not in pots, cover. Any
that you can, take inside."

Shimmering as if in antic-

new year, this one com-
plete with a Blue Moon as
an upcoming grand finale.
This time next year, the
rare becomes reality, when
this two-and-a-half-to-
three-year occurrence
falls in December. Steeped
in legend and lore, gazers
can see the.moon made of

Elias was born on a farm near
Spencer, Mass., in 1819 and moved to
Boston at age 18 to find work in a machine
shop. This is where he began tinkering
with machines.
The, machine which made him a leg-
end in his own time could do the work of
five men, or shall we say, five women,
since it was the women who used his ma-
chine.
His invention was the sewing ma-
chine. His name was Elias Howe.
Elias was the first American to re-
ceive a patent for the type of sewing ma-
chine that's used today, although many
changes have been made to his original
version. He received U.S. Patent #4,750 in
1846.
The story of how he came to invent
the sewing machine is interesting. While
working in a mill on his father's farm,
Elias overheard someone say that "anyone
who can invent a practical sewing ma-
chine will be a very rich man." So he set
off to do something which drains the bank

accounts of many men-he got married.
But it was his wife who provided the
inspiration for Elias' invention, as she
took up sewing to help support the family
Seeing her sew inspired him to build his
first sewing machine.
Sometimes the person who invents the
product isn't the one who is able to capi-
talize on it. For example, RCA became syn-
onymous with radio and TV in the early
1900's, yet RCA didn't invent either radio
or TV Likewise, Isaac Singer's name is the
one that became synonymous with the
sewing machine, even though Isaac Singer
didn't invent it.
But Singer did make some important
improvements to Howe's hand-cranked
sewing machine. Singer's version includ-
ed the up-and-down motion as well as the
foot pedal, known as a treadle. Singer's
version was also the first one to succeed
commercially.
In 1854, the courts ruled that Singer
had infringed upon Howe's patent. As a re-
sult, Singer had to pay Howe a $25 royalty

for each machine that he sold, making
Howe a very wealthy man. He earned
more than $2 million between 1954-1967,
which was a huge amount of money in the
mid-1800's. It was enough to make him the
fourth wealthiest man in America (by
comparison, the fourth wealthiest man in
America today is worth $18 billion). Howe
donated some of his money to equip
Union soldiers in the Civil
War, and he also served as
a private in the war.

Isaac Singer became the first inventor
to mass-produce sewing machines while
his business partner, Edward Clark, in-
vented something just as useful as the
sewing machine. Clark created the world's
first installment plan, which allowed their
customers to pay a portion of the total
price on a weekly basis, rather than hav-
ing to pay for a new machine all at once.
