of Strength
It's not hard to find
God's presence in Francis
of Assisi, Vincent de Paul
or Mother Teresa. These
holy people touched
many lives and are world
figures.
But God works also in
the lowly and hidden, as
God did in the little village
of Himlaya, tucked in the
cedarrich mountains of
Lebanon.
There, Boutroussieh
Ar-Ray6s was born to
poor, .devout Maronite
Catholics.
Her mother died when
Boutroussieh was seven.
At 11, she already worked
as a maid to help support
the family.
At 18, she entered a
community of teaching
sisters where she was
called Sister Anissa. She
lived a quiet life teaching

in Suffering
young girls for 18 years.
In 1871, her community
merged with another that
had a similar charism.

By Joseph Rayes,
O.F.M.

Each sister could
choose to join the new
community or enter a
cloistered community. At
39, Anissa chose the
cloistered Baladite Order.
She took the name of her
deceased mother, Rafqa

Archbishop Chacour. He is
quick to admit that he. has

him. For example, one
group actively responsible
for providing subsidies for
student scholarships and
building projects is the

the help of former U.S.

he was having trouble
getting a building permit for
the high school Archbishop
Chacour decided to visit
Baker, who was then U.S.
Secretary of State. It was
just after the Persian Gulf
War in 1991. He simply
went to his house and
knocked on the door. The
secretary's wifel Susan,

Now a college senior

she spends free time
coaching Muslim girls.
And she's sharing her
experiences to help give
them the confidence to
follow in her footsteps.
As more covered
Muslim girls take up
competitive sports, Bakri
and other supporters say
it's time to get beyond
merely allowing the hijab
- or traditional Muslim
headscarf worn for
modesty and help
make those wearing it feel
welcome.
"It's not like
accommodating for one
person anymore, it's a
group," Bakri says.
Experts and advocates
say the number of Muslim
girls wearing the hijab on
the court, track or field is
rising because girls are
growing more

comfortable pursuing
mainstream activities
while maintaining
religious traditions.
Similar patterns are being
played out in other areas
with large Muslim
populations.
"They don't see the
barriers," said Edina
Lekovic, spokeswoman
for the Los Angeles-based
Muslim Public Affairs
Council. "They take it for
granted they can play in
competitive sports ... and
work out the clothing
issues at the same time."
Even so, Bakri and
current Fordson players
say they've heard trash-
talk that goes beyond the
usual on-court chatter -.
calling them terrorists,
telling them to go back to
their own country.
Bakri said some
coaches and referees have
questioned whether she
could play in a scarf and
sweat pants, relenting

their shelves are stocked
with identical staples:
sugar, rice, tomato paste,
tuna, pasta, yogurt, milk,
honey, white cheese, tea,
the odd frozen chicken
and a variety of
vegetables pickled in
brine. Food is acquired in
modest quantities, on a
daily, if not meal-by-meal
basis.
With the prices of basic

skyrocketing, there's only
one type of nourishment
average Egyptians can
afford in plentiful
quantities: bread, round
loaves of mostly wheat
flour called aish baladi
(local bread). Some
government subsidized
loaves are produced daily
and sold for less than one
US cent in the early
mornings, with a slightly
larger, four cent version
available throughout the
day. One of the world's
largest wheat importers,
Egypt consumes 14 mmt
(million metric tons)
annually, accord- ing to a
United States Department
of Agriculture report, and
is obliged to import half
that amount, most of it
destined for use in aish

Even the price of the

ubiquitous bean sandwich
has risen enough to make
people whose monthly
salary averages less than
think twice about buying
them. The cost only other

of rice, pasta and lentils)

making it less accessible
than before.
Egyptians average just
six grams of meat per day
annually), mostly served
during religious feasts.
Chicken, once favoured
over red meat for its lower
cost, has become
expensive due to
recurrent outbreaks of
Avian Flu. Egypt is one of
the hardest-hit countries
worldwide. Not only was
the flourishing local
chicken industry virtually
decimated, Cairenes who
raised chickens on their
roofs as an additional
source of income, or for
an occasional special
meal, were forcibly
obliged to stop.
Bread provides the
single largest source -of
calorie intake for most
Egyptians, and is the
centrepiece of every meal.
Indeed, the chewy discs

Mid-life Changes
God writes in crooked
lines and tosses us about
until we are where God
wants us to be. Rafqa was
serenely happy in .her new
home. She did the daily
chores of cloistered life
with a joyful spirit.
We are reminded of St.
Thkrese of Lisieux and
her little way, doing
ordinary things

extraordinarily well.
One sister who lived
with Rafqa at this time
stated, "During my stay
with her she was simple-
hearted, happy in every
situation; she had no
temper... was never angry
or disturbed. Nor did
anyone become angry
with her. We all agree she
became a saint because of
her good-heartedness."
But what is the cost of

study in her living room -
when he asked her what her
group was studying. It was
the Sermon on the Mount.
He then asked her what
language they were using;
of course, it was English.
"I pity you, but good
luck" said the Archbishop,
who knows 11 languages

remark puzzled Mrs. Baker,
so she asked if he could

this Bible passage better.
For the next two hours
Archbishop Chacour sat in

Islam is a religion of law
and acts to its very core.
The five duties become
the road of Muslim
salvation. Orthodox
Muslims structure their
lives around them
according to a series of
dos and don't by
revering and adhering to
the traditions and the law.
The Pharisees are very
much analogous to
Muslims. They were
captivated by the tyranny
of a legalistic
commitment. They were
convinced that the
ceremonial law and the

tradition of the elders
were meritorious and the
only way to
righteousness. Jesus
called them blind
