Southern Federation President

The Legacy Continues

ALSAC, which was
established five years
before St. Jude opened, is
now the third-largest
health care charity in
America, conducting
more than 30,000 events

Thomas family members entertained convention guests at the Hafli Dinner on June 22, singing
their rendition of "There s Nothing Like a Dame." Pictured here (L to R): Tony Thomas, Marlo

with the support of more
than one million
volunteers. This support
has enabled St. Jude to
rewrite the medical
textbooks on childhood
cancer, helping to

improve the survival rate
for childhood cancers
from less than 20 percent
to more than 70 percent.
And Danny's promise that
financial concerns would
not affect treatment has

been honored: no family
ever pays for treatments
.not covered by insurance,
and families without
insurance are never asked
to pay.

Dear Federation
Family and Friends:
Shortly, my Presidency
of the Southern
Federation will end. It's
been a remarkable and
memorable year of
renewing old friendships,
making new ones and
conducting the business
of the President.
As Janet and I have
visited clubs throughout
the Federation (we are
planning to visit over 30
cities this year), and as we
are about to celebrate our

Federation President
Irv Schwary
76th annual convention in
Houston, I have found the
Federation to be a strong
viable organization. But

Federation doesgot come

Over recent weeks
several dozen Lebanese
politicians have slipped
away from their homes in
and around Beirut to fly
off to Paris, Amman,
London or some other
foreign bolt-hole,
affywhere to put some
distance between

themselves and the
assassins they believe are
stalking them.
The jumpy politicians,
all of them from the anti-
Syrian camp, are not the
only ones getting out.
There's a haemorrhage

Algeria's Energy
Minister, Chakb
Khelil, announced on
30 April that his
country planned to
boost its annual gas
exports by one third to
83m cubic metres from
2010, half of it LNG.
He said that two LNG
gas projects, each with
a capacity of 4.5m
tons, would be
operating by 2011-12.
Both are being
financed by Algeria's
national oil company,
Sonatrac, which cut its

debt by $500m in 2006
and posted annual
revenues of $54bn.
Alexander Rahr, a
Russia and energy

Jameal A. Kahalley'
1922-2006

Jameal Kahalley was
born in Bay Minette,
Alabama to Assed and
Lydia Kahalley. He was a
first-generation American
and was the youngest of
seven children. His
parents, brother, and
sisters were regulars at
the Southern Federation
conventions each year,
but the 1950 convention
had a profound impact on
Jameal. That year, he re-
turned from his
convention experience
with such enthusiasm he
founded the Lebanese

American Club of
Mobile, as we know it
today. Not only was he
the first president of the
local club, but he was the
first Mobilian to serve as
President of the Southern
Federation of Syrian
Lebanese American
Clubs. Those who
remember the 1953
convention say that his
mother, Lydia, cooked for
weeks in preparation for
entertaining in their
presidential suite. Until
the time of his death, he
was the most senior living
past president.
Jameal married Sondra
Boykin in 1960. They
were married 45 years
and had three children,
Laura, Diana, and Paul.
They have four
grandchildren: Bess,
Kate, Scotty, and Wes.
"Papa"' adored his

Convention speakers highlight
legacy of ALSAC St. Jude
Outreach Director Marlo Thomas

I. The church will not
convert the world.
According to scriptures
the church is not to win
the whole world to Christ
not to rise to a position of
world influence in social,
economic and political
life.
2. The church will be
united to Christ. The
figure of the church as a
virgin has been used
previously 2 Cor: 11 :2
and in Revelation. Her
union with Christ at the
marriage of the Lamb is
foretold. This can only
mean that she will be
brought unto the most
intimate relation with
Christ). The idea of
fellowship and of co-
ownership are involved in
the conception Rom 8:

.

Rev. Frea Massaoni

3. The church will
reign with Christ as his
bride. She will be at His
side and share in His
authority in His world-
wide kingdom on earth.
Rev 1:6 She will even
have a part in judging of
angels I Cor:6:3. Having
suffered with Him in the
day of His glorification II
Tim 2. It is said that His
servant shall reign forever
and ever Rev 22:5. Not

The Pauline Year (June
29, 2008-June
29,2009)invites us to recall
the genius and sanctity and
zeal of the Apostle of the
Gentiles. Pope Benedict
XVI encourages us to
recall and to imitate what
he taught.
The perennial power of
Paul
How did Saint Paul do
it? What did he speak,
write, and do to attract som
many to Christianity? He
was a dynamic evangelizer,
the premier apostle of the
Good News. Sitting in a
pew, or participating in a
Bible study circle in the
third millennium, it can
still be difficult to fathom
the grace, the meaning he
loaded into his letters. But,
promise biblical scholars

On the occasion of the
50th anniversary
--ALSAC, St. Jude
National Outreach
Director Marlo Thomas
spoke to the crowd at the
2007 ALSAC National
convention about her
father's legacy. Here are
excerpts from that
speech.
If you were here when
[m father, Danny
Thomas,] was here and
had been able to watch
him as he walked the
halls, consulted with
doctors and nurses, spent
time with the families,
you would know how
deeply he felt for the
children, and for their
parents, and how
personally he took those
parents' desperate need to
reclaim their child's life.
When he said that a
child "dying in the dawn
of life is unacceptable,"
this wasn't a slogan for
him. It was a battle cry

Turkey
(continued from page 1)
returns to power with an
impressive 47% of the
vote, winning 342 seats in
the 550-seat parliament.
The victory of Mr
SErdogan's Justice and
Development (AKP) party
marks the first time in a
Turkish election that a
ruling party improved its
standing, giving it a strong
mandate for the future. It
was also a major slap in the
face for those who had
warned against offering
support to a man who, his
rivals alleged, was intent
on dismantling the
country's existing
constitution, the legacy of
Kemal Attaturk.
But in success Mr
Erdogan was gracious and
swift to reassure voters that
Turkey's secularist
ideology was under no
threat.
"Democracy has passed
a very important test
today", the prime minister

told crowds in Ankara,
after the results were
announced.
"Whoever you voted for
... we respect your choices.
We regard your differences
. as part of our pluralist
democracy. It is part of our
responsibility to safeguard
this richness."
With its roots in political
Islam the AKP attracts
support from Turks across
the length and breadth of
the country, especially
from socially conservative
Muslim merchants and
business people, often in
more rural areas.
During its term of office,
it has looked beyond the
major towns and cities in
its political mandate and
brought increased
prosperity to previously
neglected areas. Its policies
however, have frequently
infuriated Turkey's
powerful military generals,
who have ousted four
elected govermnents since
1960.
The sheer scale ef Mr

Erdogan's election victory
will make it more difficult
for the old guard of
politicians, industrialists
and bureaucrats who, with
the support of the army,
have monopolised power,
to intervene as Turkey
moves forward into a new
era of prosperity, one it
hope Jiwill eventually lead
to membership of the
European Union (EU).
Political observers have
said the scale of the AKP
success also shows wide
support for Mr Erdogan's
astute handling of a
potentially devastating
political crisis, following a

clash between the
government and the
military in April. The army
high command implicitly
threatened to throw the
prime minister out of office
after deadlock was reached
over the selection of a new
president.
Mr Erdogan nominated
his foreign minister,
Abdullah Gul, to succeed
President Ahmet Necdet

judge. But the fact Mr

contemporaries. They
cannot be different.
The 1993 Pontifical
Biblical Commisssion
instruction, The
Interpretation of the Bible
in the Church, explains the
actualization" of the word
of God. It wants to help us
understand what the I3ibl.e
is saying to us today. God
did not speak through the
inspired writers only for the
people of 2000 years ago.
Beginning with what the
scripture text meant for its
own time, actualization
invites us to do three
things: hear the text within
one's own situation,
identify the aspects of the
present situation
underscored by the text,
and draw from the text the
meaning that guides us to
the will of God. Although
the
1; Biblical texts have
been composed in the
languages of thepast, they
reveal their message for us
today as we apply their
message to present-day
circumstances and express
it in today's language.
What was Paul telling

us?
Paul describesfor us the
effects of Christ's
redemptive act, what he did
for humanity. He
comments on the various
effects of the redemption as
looking at the event from
ten different angles. From
one angle he explains that
Christ justified us --
justification; from other
angles, he depicts
salvation, reconciliation,
expiation, redemption,
freedom, sanctification,
transformation, new
creation, and glorification.
Each angle of vision
derives from Paul's Jewish
or IIellcnistic background
and education. Me tells us
that Jesus Christ justified
us, that he made it possible
for us to stand before God
the judge and hear a verdict
of acquittal as one would in
a court of law today
following a trial. Is there a
difference among all these
images or facets of the
saving act of Jesus? Not
really.
Christ Jesus did this, and
Paul simply uses different
images to convey the
results. In examining Paul's

For 50 years you've
raised the dollars to build
the finest institution in
the world for the study of
childhood disease, with
state-of-the-art
technology to diagnose
and treat the world's
sickest children.
For 50 years you have
raised the dollars so that
we could raise survival

where once there was
only despair.
And for 50 years you
have raised the dollars to
keep my father's promise
that no child will ever be
turned away for a
family's inability to pay.
To me, this is the greatest
testament to my father's
deep, deep compassion.
In these times when
confrontation so often

drowns out cooperation,
when a sense of
competition seems more
important than a sense of
duty, you are providing
the lifeblood for one of
the most crucial
dialogues of our time, a
passionate exchange of
ideas that permits us to
remain the beacon of
light that blazes in the
darkest shadows of
medical science. ...
If you look into the
faces of these children ,
you see the face of
humanity, you see
courage and compassion
and incredible strength.
You see a capacity for
joy in the face of
adversity that is simply
astounding. You see the
potential that is in all of
us. I travel a lot around
