Kalil-Taylor

When it comes to
interpreting reams, a
gurgling fountain means
happiness and fulfillment.
But Darin Taylor wasn't
aware of the symbolism
when he proposed to
Michelle Kalil, 33, beside a
famous fountain in
Savannah, Ga. He just has
goof instincts.
"I think it's really neat,"
Darin, 40, said of Forsyth
Fountain. The fountain,
which was seen in Forrest
Gump, was built in 1858
and features a woman
holding a rod. The rod
splashes water into two
basins below while more
water sprays from tritons
and swans surrounding the
base. For symbolists, it
couldn't be more
auspicious.
The couple met by
chance seven years earlier

Father Paul Coturier,
great apostle of Christian
unity, observed: "So
many Catholics are shut
up in their Church and in
their faith, like others in
their political party. They
yearn for a totalitarian
state. All this has nothing
to do with the gospel.
The Orthodox Eastern
Churcn and the non-
naiceaonian churches
have continued their
partriarchal organization.
For the Byzantine
Churches Constantinople
is still the senior see, the
first among equals.
However, its influence
has lessened. The
Patriarchs of Antioch,
Alexandria, and
Jerusalem have been
reduced in stature by the
events of history,
ecclesiastical and secular.

Democracy
For the first time in
Pakistan's history, the number
of religious-based parties is
rising, and suicide bombings
are becoming a common
occurrence of daily life.
Extremists have expandedtheir
presence beyond the' tribal
areas into more settled areas
like Islamabad, Karachi and
Tank. More militias, hiding
under the guise of madrassas
(Islamic religious schools),
have been established since
9/11. Now, armed vigilantes
are kidnapping police officials
at gunpoint in the heart of the
country's capital, barely a mile
from the country's Supreme
Court and Parliament
buildings.
Although he resolutely
eschews responsibility, Gen.
Pervez Musharraf and his
regime have stoked these fires.
Instead of building the strong,
stable and "enlightened
democracy" that he promised
after the 1999 coup, Gen.
Musharraf has undermined
secular forces by openly

rigging elections, clamping
down on media and free
speech, failing to pursue
investigations of innocent
civilians who have
disappeared, as well as
intimidating political
opponents by any means,
including physical attacks.
He will not brook any
opposition. In May, 48
peaceful protesters lawyers,
human-rights activists and
ordinary Pakistanis were
slaughtered on the streets of
Karachi as they rallied
peacefully against Mr.
Musharrafs unlawful
suspension of Pakistan's top
judge, Chief Justice Iffikhar

At the Bahri Dental

minutes, rather than
hanging out reading
gingivitis posters.
You can call it just-in-

really, you can; that's not

a joke. The behind-the-
scenes processes that
enable Bahri's office to
move patients through
quickly and smoothly
draw upon a series of
principles, including just-
in-time delivery, derived
from Japanese auto
manufacturer Toyota.
Bahri has taken these
principles, known as lean
manufacturing, and
applied them to his
practice.
Lean is both a way of
thinking and a set of
processes, all designed to

starting the job, or else to
relinquish their rights to
salary increases, time off and
other benefits.
Opposition critics believe
that replacing the
constitution's socialist
framework with a democratic
one and emphasising
"citizenship" rather than the
role of workers forging the
nation's future, will result in
further setbacks for workers'
rights. The new investment-
friendly constitution will in
fact pave the way for more
privatization of traditionally
state-owned sectors.
Meanwhile, subsidies on
basic utilities and
commodities are being
reduced as the state unloads
its socialist responsibilities.
Facing high prices, low
wages, reduced subsidies,
and the threat of job losses
due to privatization, worried
workers are beginning to act.
The last six months have
seen a surge in protests in
public and private sector
concerns, in cement, textile,

ceramic and sugar factories;
by state-employed teachers,
medical staff, rubbish
collectors, street cleaners and
railway workers. Recent
strikes in state-owned textile
factories involved up to
20,000 workers, and the
government was obliged to
grant their demands, namely
the small bonuses ($22) the
companies had promised, but
withheld, claiming
inadequate profits.
At the heart of the
workers' dilemma, is their
lack of representatives to
present their complaints and
negotiate on their behalf. The
surge of protests is directly
related to last November's
union elections, which
workers say were not
transparent. Egypt's most
active workers' advocacy
NGO, the Centre for Trade
Union and Workers' Services
has reaffirmed the workers'
right to choose their own
representatives, if necessary,
by forming their own unions.

effect than any of the prior
complications. In addition
to sacking Constantinople
and establishing a new
kingdom of Jerusalem, the
crusaders imposed
Western authority and
practice on the East.
The West was -
intervening in Eastern
Patriarchates. The
Patriarch of -the West
permitted a Latin (Roman)
hierarchy to be set up in
Constantinople and in
Jerusalem, area in which
Byzantine (Greek)
hierarchy already existed.
"Latin" and
"Latinization" became
synonymous with Roman
interference in, and
Westernization of, the
Church in the East. Eastern
Catholics' resentment
grew as these errors
multiplied.

Pontifical offices. After the
split, the papal function as
Supreme Pontiff was no
longer effective or
recognized in the East. The
West forgot that most of
the Pope's authority over
the Catholic Church rested
in his Patriarchal function
for the West, not his
Supreme pontifical
function.
Unfortunately, the
misunderstanding
continued when some
small ,bodies of the
Orthodox Eastern Church
were reconciled and
restored in their Roman
communion. This attitude
intensified when Western
missionary activity made
the Latin Church
worldwide. Even today, it
is important for Western
Catholics to regain
awareness of the
distinction between the
Pope as Patriarch of the
West and as Supreme
Pontiff.

among a growing number
of women and girls here
who are rethinking and
reinventing the abaya to
more closely reflect their
personalities and
religious beliefs.
The change is most
striking in Jiddah, the
kingdom's most
cosmopolitan city, where
many young women now
wear their head scarves
around their shoulders

and leave their abayas
open to reveal pants and
T-shirts.
Abayas with patches
of fluorescent color,
floral patterns, animal
prints, embroidery and
even zodiac signs have
started to show up in
other cities as well,
prompting clerics to
criticize the trend and
reiterate that abayas were
meant to deflect
attention, not attract it.
The redefinition of the
abaya mirrors the greater,
though still limited,
personal freedom
allowed in the kingdom
over the past five years.
A major factor in the
change was the
involvement of young
Saudis in the 9/11
attacks. Many people

The annual event allows

One exciting feature of
the event was the Meet

special session allowed
guests a wellrounded
view of the care and
treatment provided to 8-
yearold St. Jude- patient
Jazmine Davis, who
suffered from acute

lymphoblastic leukemia.
A host of caregivers, from
Jazmine's family to her
doctor and nurses, were
on hand to tell of the life-
saving treatment she
received at the hospital.
St. Jude patients John
Alston and Christian
Gizara, as well as their
families, also shared their
stories.
St. Jude Chief Medical
Officer Joe Mirro Jr., MD,
spoke to the group about
the hospital's ongoing

Jesus
(continued from page 3)
may be revealed." And
Mary said, "My soul doth
magnify the Lord my spirit
hath rejoiced in God my
Saviour." It means she
needs a Savior because she
is earthly. ,
Millions are worshiping
Mary rather than Jesus,
because they are ignorant
of the word of God. John
3:16 "For God so loved the
world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in
him should not perish, but
have everlasting life."
The word vicarious
suffering means suffering
endured by one instead of
another! Since Christ is
God incarnate the
substitute is God himself.
"Take heed therefore .unto
yourselves, and to all the
flock over the which the
Holy Ghost bath made you
overseers, to feed the
church of God. which he
hath purchased with his
own blood." Acts 20: 28
Secondly, it is satisfaction,
since holiness is Gods
fundamental attribute; it is
only reasonable that He
should be given some
satisfaction to remove the
outrage of sin. The death of
Christ supplies this
satisfaction, it satisfies the
justice of God, and the

Law of God. Its involved
in atonement in
perpetuation and in
reconciliation. Romans 5:
10: "For if, when we were
enemies, we were
reconciled to God by the
death of his Son, much
more, being reconciled, we
shall be saved by his life."
"Ephesians 2: 16: And that
he might reconcile both
unto God in one body by
the cross, having slain the
enmity thereby:" A truck
driver in NA when I asked
him St. Mary conceived by
the Holy Spirit of God and
brought a Son, tell me
please whose son is He, he
answered me fast "the Son
of God". God loves you!
Now from all that we have
read was good proof from
the OT and NT that Jesus
is the creator, He is the
Father. He is the Son and
He is the Holy Spirit one
God) As we said before,
the his Holy Spiritis filling
the universe and holding
everything by His power.
Hebrews 7:3 "Without
father, without mother,
without descent, having
neither
beginning of days, nor
end of life; but made like
unto the Son of God;
abideth a priest
continually." Believe it or
not! It is the chief purpose
of the incarnation. Mark

Unity
(continued from page 3)
Orthodox sees.
At the conclusion of
world War I, the churches
of the Serbsi and of the

Romanians

became

autocephalous (self-
governing) patriarchates,
too. The Bulgarian church
fulfilled an old ambition
and followed in 1953.
Prospects for Reunion
In the meantime the
Orthodox Eastern
Church, through a variety
of political and religious
pressures, has
fragmented. Autonomous
and national segments of
Orthodoxy have
multiplied. The question
is inevitable, then. It is
possible for the Catholic
Church to return in some
fashion to its structure of
administration before the
tragic separation?
History provides an
answer. The General
Councils of Lyons in
1274 an Florence in 1439
restored unity between
East and West. In both
instances, however, the
reunion lasted only a
short time. The basis of
reconciliation in both
cases was precisely the
recognition of the
distinction between the
pope as Patriarch of the
West and as Supreme

Pontiff. The Apostolic
See acknowledged the
respect due the autonomy
of the Eastern Churches
in matters of internal
government. Recognition
was clearly granted t this
important element of
earliest tradition.
Pope John XXIII
renewed the sincere
appeal of his predecessors
for Christian unity early
in his brief pontificate.
Shortly thereafter he
convoked Vatican
Council II and
commissioned the
conciliar fathers to study
the problem of
ecumenism, giving new
impetus to the hope of
reunion. The Vatican II
documents on the
Church, on the Sacred
Liturgy, on the Eastern
Catholic Churches, and
on Ecumenism all deal
with this question.
Unfortunately the
document on the Eastern
Catholic Churches has
been. the one least
examined and
commented.
Pope John Paul II has
continued to make heroic
efforts in this matter. Ut
unam sint addresses the
matter directly. Yet the
responses of the other
churches is cautious and
restrained. Repeatedly

Pakistan

Chaudhry. Pakistani media and
eyewitness accounts report that
members of the Muttahida
Quami Movement (MQM),
the ruling party and an ally of
the regime, shamelessly
opened fire on these unarmed
citizens. Hoping to silence any
challenges to their stranglehold
over the port city and
commercial jugular of
Pakistan, Mr Mushanafs allies
have also cracked down on
independent television
networks and opposition
leaders with impunity.
Meanwhile, opposition calls to
establish an independent
judicial inquiry into who
ordered the police to stand by
while citizens were killed have
been ignored.
Yetthis tigers clearly eating
his own tail. Mr Musbanafs
dictatorship is fueling
instability in Pakistan:
Oppressed citizens, who are
denied a truly representative
government that can address
their most basic issues, now

seek refuge in extremism and
religious fundamentalism. In
return, their basic needs for
clothing, food, shelter and
health are being met by the
political madrassas.
These madrassas have been
given permission to establish
FM radio stations to spread
their message, something not
yet granted to moderate
political parties. This has bred a
dangerous slide into the kind of
intolerance once alien to
moderate Pakistan. Faced with
growing threats to stability,
there is a widespread
consensus that restoring
democracy through free, fair,
transparent and intemationally-
supervised elections is the only
way to return Pakistan to
civilization, and to maginalize
the extremists.
Aretumtodemocracyisnot
just important for Pakistanis -
it is important for the entire
world. Yet Mr. Mushanaf and
his regime are promoting the
perception that he is the only
bulwark between the West and

business operation more
efficient.
For the dental office,
this means small things -
like arranging
sterilization areas in a
way that minimizes steps
- as well as large things.
One of the biggest
differences at Bahri's
office, for example, is
that patients don't move
from room to room or
have to deal with multiple
appointments even when
they have multiple issues
that need to be addressed.
Need a cleaning, an exam
and a cavity filled? Get it
all done in one go, rather
than coming back another
day.
For his efforts, earlier
this year the Lebanon-
born dentist received the
Shingo Prize, a national
award given companies
and researchers who use
and studies lean
principals. Bahri has been

- using lean techniques for
around a decade, after
running through a buffet
of management
philosophies.
Although his patients'
visits are shorter, Bahri
said, the time spent with
each is about the same.
The difference is that
the patient is supposed to
spend as little time as
possible being made to do
things he or she doesn't
want to do, particularly
things that don't lead to
accomplishment: Sitting
around the waiting room,
waiting for a hygienist to
show up, coming back for
another appointment
when a problem is found
on the first one.
"When the patient gets
in the chair, we don't want
to waste any time," Bahri
said. "I look at it from the
patient point of view."
That efficiency has
even helped change
patient behavior.
Knowing that they won't

prompted a statement signed
by 18 NGOs noting that
workers' dire financial straits
are incitement enough, and
that strikes are not a form of
civil unrest, but a necessary,
and time-honoured means of
establishing fair conditions in
the workplace that the state
fears and wishes to contain.
During last November's
union elections, another of
the state's preoccupations
became apparent. The
Muslim Brothers were
reportedly prepared to field
candidates for 50% of
GFETU seats, and 15% of
the seats allocated to
company boards, but last-
minute bureaucratic
demands and other forms of
'filtering' candidates
prevented them. The Muslim

Soroya
(continued from page 7)
have ignored the seductive
advances of macho
Hollywood actor Kirk
Douglas, to have formed a
relationship with Frank
Sinatra, to have been dated
by Italian gigolo Massimo
Gargia (who gained fame
and fortune for being Greta
Garbo's lover in her later
years) and also by German
millionaire Gunter Sachs.
Her name was linked with
that of actor Mel Ferrer
and even gay actor Rock
Hudson was not indifferent
to her charms. True or false
one thing was certain,
Soraya's enigmatic beauty
left no one indifferent.
This was certainly the
case for Italian film studio
Cineccita's young
a m b i t i o u s
directorlproducer Franco
Indovina. The latter was to
contact famed Italian film
director Michelangelo
Antonioni and together
they suggested a part for
the princess in their
upcoming film, I Tri Volti
(1965).
The film was explained
to the princess as a three-
part sketch, a very popular

genre in the 1960s. It was
also a way of illustrating
the wide spectrum of her
abilities as an actor, passing
from comedy to drama..
She was to be supported by
a cast of talented and
recognized actors such as
rising Irish star Richard
Harris and Italian comic
Alberto Sordi.
Indovina was to write
part of the script, which
was read to the princess for
final approval. After some
hesitation, Soraya was to
accept the offer with some
excitement. This film
experience, she believed,
would certainly allow her
to earn a living and also
alterthe public's perception
of her as a sad and lonely
princess. Italy was one of
her favourite destinations
and Cineccita Studios was
in its golden years thanks to
co-productions with
Hollywood Studios in such
mega productions as
William Whyler's Ben Hur
and Joseph Mankiewicz
Cleopatra.
In addition, Italy was
where she and the Shah had
stayed during their short-
lived exile in 1953, during
(continued on page 17)

Cloaks
(continued from page 7)
began to question the
official Wahhabi
ideology that was
believed to have partly
inspired the hijackers and
that had long dictated the
country's ultra-
conservative lifestyle.
Saudi women bear the
brunt of that puritanical
ideology. They are not
allowed guardianship
over themselves and need
male permission to marry
or travel. They cannot
drive or work alongside
men and are forced to
cover up with the abaya
in public.
The varied views here
on women's dress stem
from different
interpretations of
Koranic verses. Though
there is no consensus
among Muslims
regarding what
constitutes proper dress,
most believe that God
ordered women to wear

loose clothing that covers
their contours.
The first verse in the
Koran that deals with the
Islamic dress code for
women says: "0 Prophet!
Tell thy wives and thy
daughters and the women
of the believers to draw
their cloaks close round
them (when they go
abroad). That will be
better, so that they may
be recognized and not
annoyed. Allah is ever
Forgiving, Merciful."
Al-Sharif, the
newspaper editor, said it
was possible for a woman
to flout God's orders even
if she was wearing a
black abaya. "God
ordered women to dress
modestly, to be
respectable and to avoid
provoking lust. Many
young women here wear
the abaya and yet are all
about provocation."

Jesus
(continued from page 10)
10:45 "For even the Son of
man came not to be
ministered unto, but to
minister, and to give his
life a ransom for many."
Even for Muslims. It is the
fundamental theme of the
gospel. 1st Corinthians
15:1-4
"Moreover, brethren, I
declare unto you the
gospel which I' preached
unto you, which also ye
have received, and wherein
ye stand; By which also ye
are saved, if ye keep in
memory what I preached
unto you, unless ye have
believed in vain. For I
delivered unto you first of
all that which I also
received, how that Christ
died for our sins according
to the scriptures; And that
he was buried, and that he
rose again the third day
according to the scriptures:
There is a song about our
redeemer "I will sing of
my redeemer and his

wondrous love to me. on
the cruel cross he suffered
from the curse to set me
free." Matthew 28:18: And
Jesus came and spake unto
them, saying, All power is
given unto me in heaven
and in earth." John 14:6
"Jesus saith, I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no
man cometh unto the
Father, but by me." John
8:24: "I said therefore unto
you, that ye shall die in
your sins: for if ye believe
not that I am he, ye shall
die in your sin." Hebrews
2:3: How shall we escape,
if we neglect so great
salvation; which at the first
began to be spoken by the
Lord, and was confirmed
unto us by them that
heard? My advice, be lie&
in the Lord Jesus before
the wrath of God comes on
the ungodly.

Pope John Paul II has

Nothing could be further

Islamic parties have always
been a marginal force in
Pakistan's elections, having
never garnered more than 11%
in any parliamentary election.
And if free and fair elections
are allowed to take place now
they will be marginalized

state action against terrorists. A
recent poll by the International
Republican Institute confirmed
this view.
Furthermore, no Pakistani,
except those on the fringe,
disagrees with the movement
to rid Pakistan and the region of
terrorism, or any militancy
driven by misguided religious
dogma or sectarian extremism.
The truth remains that more
than two-thirds of Pakistanis
are distinctlymoderate and see
the tide of extremism currently
rippling out from tribal
Pakistan as a danger to its self-
image and stability. The notion
that the toppling of Mr.

Mushaanafs regime would be a
disaster for Pakistan (or a
nightmare for the West) is
nonsense.
Pakistan's countertenorism
objectives will never reach any
semblance of success if it is
hamstrung by a regime that is
dependent on the religious right
for its political survival. It is a
well-known fact that the
political structure that Mr.
Musharraf put into place
following the most recent
general elections has enabled
the Taliban to regroup. The
Taliban now has an irregular
army whose soldiers receive

be left sitting' around,
Bahri said, patients are
more likely to show up on
time.
The office is entirely
arranged around lean
principles scrawled on a
board in the breakroom
and discussed each
morning in staff meetings.
The changes include
tangible ones, like hiring
a flow coordinator who
makes sure there is no
wasted time while dealing
with patients (each one
with his or. her own
flowchart), as well as
more mental shifts:
Employees are
encouraged to develop
their own ideas for how to
be more efficient, for
example.
"They have some of
the most beautiful ideas,"
the dentist said. "I beg
them for their opinions."
The biggest suggestion
that Bahri is now looking

to put into place is to
combine the orthodontics
area with the rest of the
practice, just as caps and
cleaning are now done in
one place.
But other changes are
also welcomed, he said,
even minor ones, as long
as they lead to greater
efficiency.
"There's continuous
improvement through big
changes and small
changes," he said. "It
never ends."

Brothers' attempt to position
itself in NDP-dominated
unions reflects a degree of
penetration and influence in
the workplace
Even amongst the
opposition, there are many
who agree that ridding the
constitution of its socialist
constructs may help
eliminate hindrances to
economic growth. But some
are asking why, in that case,
has a key provision from the
socialist era been preserved,
namely the stipulation that
halfofparliament is occupied
by representatives of workers
and farmers? The answer lies
in the fact that the bulk of
these MPs are still NDP party
members. Their presence has
done less to improve the lot
of their constituencies than to
maintain the state's authority
over labour and agriculture-
related issues.
In response to critics ofthe
forthcoming amendments,
Parliamentary Speaker Fathi
Sorour has stated that ridding
the constitution of socialism
means eliminating

government control over the
economy, and that the final
draft will emphasise that
"Egypt is a democratic state
based on national unity and
social justice". But if the
concept of citizenship is to be
enlarged in the new
document, the government
will have to provide citizens
with rights and
responsibilities to go along
with it. Likewise, the role of
civil society, and political
opposition, would have to be
encouraged rather than
proscribed.
The Emergency Law, in
place since President Anwar
Sadat's 1981 assassination,
allows the state a free hand in
dealing with its critics,
including limiting public
gatherings, like
demonstrations and civic
rallies. While one of
President Mubarak's
campaign promises in the
2005 elections was to replace
the Emergency Law with
'anti-terrorism legislation',
presumably allowing
legislative space for civil
society and political

Soroya
.(continued from page 13)
the oil nationalisation crisis
that brought Prime Minister
Mohamed Mossadeg to the
international spotlight. In
1953 Italy had greeted the
royal couple warmly and it
was even said that the Shah
had hesitated to return to
Iran to regain his throne,
although he finally bowed
to the insistence of his
political advisors.
The princess proved to
be particularly photogenic
and Antonioni captured her
presence and humour in the
film.. However no kisses
were allowed due to her
royal status and in order to
avoid rumours. Richard
Harris was later to declare
in the Italian press that the
princess had star quality
and had impressed him
with her natural
professionalism and talent.
The film was presented
at the opening of the 1964
Milan Film Festival. By
then news of Soraya's film

debut had reached the
Shah's court. The monarch
seemed amused and
genuinely pleased for his
ex-wife but the news was
censored in the Iranian
Dress.
Soraya's autobiography
was published in the same
year. It was to become an
immediate international
bestseller but was also to be
censored in Iran.
The then unknown
Ayatollah Khomeini had
encouraged riots in 1963 by
using religious arguments
against the Shah's reign and
his western sympathies.
Iran also had its new Queen
Farah who had recently
given birth to Crown Prince
Reza, heir to the Peacock
Throne. The country was
eagerly waiting for news of
the announce ment of the
coronation of the royal
couple, which was to take
place several years later in
October 1967 and so any
news of Soroya was
deemed inappropriate.

In the meantime the

divorce from the Shah. The
two were eventually
engaged and she was
determined to marry him.
The Shah gave the couple
his approval and Soraya
was even invited to Tehran
on a private visit.
Her love for the Shah
never altered, as she
confirmed in the reedited
edition of her memoirs, but
she felt that Indinova could
give her the love and
happiness she needed.
Sadly, it was not to be: a
tragic aircraft accident in
the early 1970s killed
Indovina on his way back
from a business trip shortly
before their wedding day.
That year, Mallet-Jorris'
poem Je Veux Pleurer
Comme Soraya was put to
music by singer Marie-Paul
Belle and the song became
a chart hit. The princess

never quite recovered from
her loss.
The accident was to
make headlines and
underline Soraya's tragic
fate. Still the princess with
the sad eyes', she was to
join iconic female figures
such as Jackie Kennedy
Onasis and Maria Callas,
whose lives were linked to
personal tragedies.
After Indovina's death,
she spent the remainder of
her life unhappily, by her
own admission, wandering
through Europe, buying
antiques and high couture,
appearing at social events
in a desultory fashion, and
generally becoming known
as a serious depressive.
Soraya.is said to have died
of natural causes at age 69
and is buried in Munich. In
2002, her tomb was

defaced with the words:
'miserable. parasite',
followed by the phrase:
'Didn't work from the ages
of 25 to 60'. The vandalism
made headlines throughout
Europe.
Since Soraya's death,
several young women have
come forward claiming to
be her illegitimate
daughter, reportedly born
in 1962, according to the
Persian-language weekly
Nimrooz: the improbable
claims have never been
confirmed. The former
queen's belongings were
eventually sold off at

auction in Paris. Her
wedding dress, made by
Christian Dior, brought
$1.2m.
Soraya's great tragedy
was that she was never
entirely loved or accepted
for being just who she was.
Her inability to produce an
heir caused her rejection by
Iran; her royal affiliations
made it impossible for her
to pursue her chosen career.
The only, much loved
daughter of a proud
Bakhtiary father and a
German mother, Soroya
wascaught- between East
and West, an itinerant
ambassador of a vanished
kingdom that no longer
belonged to her.

Pakistan

regime needs the threat of an
"Islamist takeover" to keep the
rest of the world community
supportive of its continued grip
over Pakistan.
Anti-dictatorship sentiment
in Pakistan today has reached a
feverpitch.At its core, Pakistan
aspires to be a democratic
nation. The public longs for a
return to democracy through
the establishment of a cohesive
national government that can
oversee election reforms to
ensure flee elections open to all
political personalities,
including the exiled prime
ministers, observed by a robust
international monitoring team
under laws that ensure rigging
cannot take place.
Transparency International
said in a recent report that
corruption under the present
regime is much worse than

during its civilian predecessors.
Moreover, power shutdowns,
unemployment and poverty
have increased, despite the
massive international
assistance to Islamabad,
including $10 billion from
Washington alone.
Recent U.S. government
actions toward Pakistan are
increasingly encouraging.
Pressuring Mr. Mushanaf into
kick-starting the democratic
process is vitally important Itis
democracy alone that can
undermine the forces of
religious extremism as well as
give hope and opportunity to
the people of Pakistan. The
spread of political madrassas
and militancy across the
country during the eight years
of Mr. Mushanafs dictatorship
proves the point
