Qatar is at the

fanciful either when

when looking at the

With the giant North

This man of legendary
holiness had very humble
beginnings. St. Charbel
was born as Youssef
Zaarour Makhloufin 1928
in the small town of Skaa-
Kafra, a secluded village
in the shelter of the
Cedars. For Christians,
they were painful times
under the domination of
the Turks but they ensured
that their children received
.a proper religious
education.
The pious environment
of his home and the
inspiring landscape gave
birth to a lasting profound
spirituality in Youseef's
young soul. He loved
seclusion and relished
prayer. Youseef's parents,

W hen attorney Jeff Morrow wrestled a.100-pound sailfish out of
the Pacific Ocean early this year while sitting in an inflated
kayak, it became big news. For Jeff Morrow, it was another
example of taking a big challenge and going the unexpected.
Jeff Morrow grew.up in Clay County. He graduated from Orange Park
High School where he played football and basketball. Later he coached foot-
ball at Bishop Kenny, Those same energies created a bold and highly suc-
cessful trial attorney who aggressively prosecuted nursing home sexual
offenders in civil court, made sure drivers who cause death or injury are
held accountable, and-tried defendants charged with D.U.I. manslaughter in civil court for med-
ical bills and funeral expenses.
Jeff Morrow has participated in over 100 jury trials and over 100 appeals and oral argu-
ments before the Florida Supreme Court and the District Court.
-These are some of the reasons Law and Politics Magazine named Jeff Morrow a "Super
Lawyer." (top 5% of lawyers in Florida)
Jeff Morrow's legal experience and his passion for helping others will make him an
excellent judge.

Forgotten anything?
I- am not concerned

of the WEstern story to
which our Arab writer
refers to illustrate to his

extent to which she has
been. influenced by
Western culture., I do,
however, wonder,
whether this hapless
woman represents merely
an isolated phenomenon.
Is she alone deserving of
rebuke, or is she part of a
sickness that has infected
all our lives? Is being
enthralled by the West a
particularly female
malady, or is it an
epidemic. that affects
everyone, women and

The shift has strategic
implications for
SWashington, which views
Turkey as a bridge to the
Muslim world, a partner
in the war on terrorism,
and a model Tor how
Western democratic
values can coincide with
Islam.
Abdullah held talks
Tuesday with Prime-
Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan. The king's
schedule for Wednesday
called for meetings with
business leaders and a
tour of historic sites in
SIstanbul, once capital of
an Islamic empire that
included parts of Saudi
Arabia.
Since the Ottoman
Empire crumbled in.the
early 20th century, Turkey
has fixed its gaze on the
West and Erdogan has

But now, as the EU
questions whether it
wants to let in such a
large, relatively poor and
overwhelmingly Muslim
nation, Erdogan has
increasingly been
courting Middle Eastern
nations.
The prime minister
visited Qatar, Bahrain,
and Pakistan this year. In
February, he hosted
Khaled Mashaal, the
political leader of the
Palestinian militant group
Hamas. The next month,
Erdogan became the first
Turkish leader to address
a meeting of the Arab
League. And he recently
condemned Israel's
attacks on Lebanon in
deeply emotional terms.
The Saudi king's visit
is seen as a move to
tighten economic,
strategic and political ties
between the two nations.

Monastery at St. Cypran to
study for the priesthood.
His teachers were Fr.
Nemetallah Kassab and Fr.

were renowned for their
knowledge and piety.
Under their tutelage,
Brother Charbel
distinguished himself as a
leader in his studies.
On July 23 1959, Br.
Charbel was ordained to
the priesthood. He spent
the next fifteen years of
his life with the Brothers
in the Monastery of St.
Maroun and divided his
time between hard work

provided sustenance for
the Community. It was
customary for him to
spend whole nights in
prayer and to attend a

to enter the chapel and the
last to leave it. He
regarded himself as the

Community and was ever
at the service of his
Brothers.

In accordance with the

Charbel's Superiors

that he spent the next 23

accounts of those who
contacted him spoke of his
great kindness, piety and

Fasting is prescribed for you,
as prescribed .for those
before'you." (2:184)
So to keep a Fast, during-:
Ramazan. w\as made
compulsory for every
lMuslim male and female
subject to certain conditions.
Hazrat Ahmad reiterates
that the x\ord Ramazan
comes from the \ mord Ramz
S\\hich means \\armth of the
sun. That is, during this
month a person gives up
genuine physical needs and
-gets inclined. ,towards
attaining spiritual
excellences so much so that
this sort of Ramz moves the
person to piety and
righteousness. (Malfoozat.
Vol. ll,p. 210)

Fasting is an old.universal
institution; but Islam
regulated it. This month is,
then, given to Prayers,
general charity and seeking
of Allah's Blessings..
(Roohani Khazain, Vol, 2, P
203-205)
It is obligatory upon all
Mluslim adults, male and
female, to keep Fast from
Dawn to dusk. Exception,
.however, is for minors, sick,
on journey, women in
period, pregnancy, or
suckling a Baby. Those who
miss the Fast, ho\ e\er., can
complete 'the missing
number of days after the
month of Ramazan is over.
The aged person should feed
the poor 'and contribute to
charity called Fidya- an
amount equal to the price of
the meals of missing Fasting.
:Neither food, drink, 'not
intimate relationship is
permitted from dawn to
sunset.

better than Thousand Nights.,
The Angels descent, Prayers

Peace and Tranquility until

Saint
(continued from page 13)
he felt an acute pain in this
chest, leading to paralysis.
For eight days, Fr. Charbel
endured his suffering with
calm patience and
acceptance of God's will,
as had exemplified his life.
On Christmas Eve 1989,
Fr Charbel's soul passed
over to where it had
always lived while he was
on earth.
Following his death, the
monks removed -his
garment and found no
further proof of his love of
penance. He had a horse
hair-shirt next to his skin
and his loins were girded

with a rough cord. Fr.
Charbel was buried in the
Monastery cemetery. His
funeral reflected the
monastic simplicity of his
life. THere was a sense of
veneration during the
funeral and all those.
present felt that they were
burying a saint. Several
people observed a light
flickering around his tomb
on the night of his burial.
From the time of his death,
up to his beatification by
Pope Paul VI in 1965, his
body remained
miraculously incorrupt. n
.1977, Paul VI canonized
the hermit of Lebanon.

Saudi King
continuedd from page 9)
Erdogan on Tuesday
shortly after his arrival
and discussed ways bto
increase bilateral trade.
The king also oversaw the
signing of six economic
cooperation agreements.
Lebanon was also on
the agenda.
"Perhaps the biggest
proof of how our world is
full of danger is the Israeli
aggression that brotherly
Lebanon is subjected to
these days," Abdullah
said at a banquet hosted
by President Ahmet
Necdet Sezer.
What all this means for

Turkey's European
project is not entirely
clear, but the current
atmosphere is a far cry
from a few years ago,
when Erdogan toured
European capitals after
his Islamic-rooted party
took power.
"Erdogan has turned
his direction toward
countries outside of
Europe," said Ayhan
Simsek, a columnist with
the New Anatolian
newspaper. "Erdogan was
seriously disillusioned by
Europe and is now giving
priority to Muslim
