He changed his name to Charbel, after an early Christian martyr, and determined now to serve only one Master --the Lord Jesus Christ. All their pleadings with him to return were of no avail. Two years laer, the Monastery Council approved his request to become a monk. in 1853, he took the monastic vows in the presence of his Superior and the Community alone, vowing Poverty, Chastity and Obedience until death. He then received the monk's habit. He declared himself dead to this world and wished to meet with no one, not ever the members of his family. After receiving the habit, he was sent to the Monastery at St. Cypran to study for the priesthood. His teachers were Fr. Nemetallah Kassab and Fr. Nemetallah Kafry. Both were renowned for their knowledge and piety. Under their tutelage, Brother Charbel distinguished himself as a leader in his studies. On July 23 1959, Br. Charbel was ordained to the priesthood. He spent the next fifteen years of his life with the Brothers in the Monastery of St. Maroun and divided his time between hard work and prayer. His hard work provided sustenance for the Community. It was customary for him to spend whole nights in prayer and to attend a many Masses as his work permitted. He was the first to enter the chapel and the last to leave it. He regarded himself as the least of the members of the Community and was ever at the service of his Brothers. Hermit In accordance with the Rule, the major Houses of the Order had a hermitage nearby. Heaving witnessed his authentic holiness, Charbel's Superiors granted his appeak to live in the hermitage of Sts Peter and Paul. It was here that he spent the next 23 .years of his life and accounts of those who contacted him spoke of his great kindness, piety and compassion. Death and Incorrupt Body Well into his 70th year, Fr. Charbel enjoyed good health. Following his death, the monks removed -his garment and found no further proof of his love of penance. He had a horse hair-shirt next to his skin and his loins were girded with a rough cord. Fr. Charbel was buried in the Monastery cemetery. His funeral reflected the monastic simplicity of his life.
