William Tyndale (1491-
1536) began his translation
work in good faith within the
Roman Catholic Church, but
strayed and ended as a
Protestant. He sought
permission from the bishop
of London' to make an

Later he succeeded in
publishing his work in
Worms, and smuggled copies
into England in 1526. But his
efforts met with opposition
and were repudiated by the
authorities. Later he was
arrested and executed as a
heretic; Tyndale's was the
first English translation of the
Scriptures to be printed. His
work had chapter divisions
but no verse numbers. His

another dissident who had
helped Tyndale : with

editor. Coverdale did some of
the translation but leaned
heavily on the previous work
of Tyndale, and omitted the
controversial notes. Dubbed

flock by night. And, lo, the
angel of the Lord came
upon them, and the glory
of the Lord shone round
about them: and they were
sore afraid. And the angel
said unto them, Fear not:
for behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all
people. For unto you is
bom this day in the city of
David a Saviour, which is
Christ the Lord. And this
shall be a sign unto you;
Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger.,
And suddenly there was
with the angel a multitude
of the heavenly host
praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the
highest, and on earth
.peace, -good will toward
men. And it came to pass,
as the angels were gone
away from them into
heaven, the shepherds said
one to another, Let us go
now even unto Bethlehem,
and see this thing which is
come to pass, which the
Lord hath made known
unto us. And they came
with haste, and found
Mary, and Joseph, and the
babe lying in a manger.
And when they had seen
it, they made known
abroad the saying which
was told them concerning

this child. And all they that
heard it wondered at those
things which were told
them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these
things, and pondered them
in- her heart. And the
shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising
God for all the things that
they had heard and seen,
as it was told unto them."
Jesus is God in the flesh.
"I said therefore unto
you, that ye shall die in
your sins: for if ye believe
not that I am He (God), ye
shall die in your sins."
"Wherefore God also
hath highly exalted him,
and given him a .name
which is above every
name: That at the name of
Jesus every knee should
bow, of things in heaven,
and 'things in earth, and
things ,under the -earth;
And that every tongue
should confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory
of God the Father."
Put your trust in the
living and only Savior and
have eternal life. Your sins
will be forgiven. Pray this
prayer now: Lord Jesus be
merciful to me, a sinner.
Forgive my sins, enter my
heart and change my life. I
trust you. Thailk you for
saving my soul.

Emergence
(continued from page 3)
the "Great Bible" because it
was so large, this version was
placed in all English churches
by order of Henry. Among
other translations Coverdale
influenced were the Geneva
Bible and a revision of the
Great Bible known as the
Bishops' Bible. The
"Breeches Bible" was
another name for the Geneva
Bible, the first to contain
verse numbers, and was
made with the Calvinists
exiled to the Continent during
the reign of Queen Mary.
Coverdale died as a leader of
the Puritans.
From the earlier political
and religious turmoil the
seventeenth century saw the
appearance of two English
translations that would
endure in popular use into'the
twentieth century: the
Authorized version,
popularly called the King
James Bible, and the Douay-
Rheims Bible.
The Douay-Rheims Bible
'was the Roman Catholic
response to the Protestant
translation. The Council of
Trent during the reign of
Queen Elizabeth I realized
their c-religionists were at a

disadvantage among
Protestants, who could quote
by heart from the Bible in
English. They also feared that
Catholics would read
"heretical" Bibles laced with
textual notes strongly critical
of the Pope and Roman
Catholicism. The remedy
came in the person of
Gregory Martin (d. 1582), a
Catholic priest ordained a the
English College in Douai,
France. He returned to Douai
after starting the English
College in Rome. Later the
College in Douai moved to
-Rheims. It was at Douai in
1578 that Martin began to
translate two chapters of the
Bible each day and submit
them to an editorial
committee. He followed the
Latin closely while keeping
en eyeon the Greek text and
other English translations.
Copious notes, some
condemning Protestantism,
were attached to the new
translation. The New.
Testament was published in
1582, the year of his death,
and the Old Testament in
1609. The Douay-Rheims
Bible and its revisions
remained the official Catholic
version in English until the

told them how important
they are to the mission of
Danny Thomas and how
important it is for the
hospital and ALSAC to
work together so that we
can iceep this dream
alive.
We have had a
number of very
successful fundraising
events in the past few
months. Perhaps the
largest of these was the
Wall Street event, Taste
of New York, which was
held on Nov. 15. Thanks
to the hard work of a
very dedicated

committee, this event
raised $1.6 million to
support the children of
St. Jude.
Once again, Randy
Owen did a superb job at
the Radio Training
Seminar that was
recently held in
Memphis. More than
800. disc jockeys,
program managers and
station managers
attended the seminar,
which was capped off
with the Songwriters'

their participation in the
Country Cares and
Radio Cares programs
that raise nearly $30
million a year for our
sacred mission.
Speaking of Marlo
Thomas kudos to her
and the entire Thanks
and Giving committee
for a very successful
campaign, I am sure we
all saw Marlo, our
doctors and our kids on
NBC's Today -Show,
CNN's Larry King Live,
The Oprah -Winfrey
Show and several other
television programs. The
message of what we do
at St. Jude was loud and
clear. We are blessed to
have a spokesperson like
Marlo Thomas.
The public awareness
that was raised by the
Thanks and Giving

program is
immeasurable. The entire
staff of ALSAC that
worked with the Thanks
and Giving committee
deserves tremendous
praise for their
outstanding contribution
to this effort.
We begin the second
half of this fiscal year
with more enthusiasm
than ever. We will take
the momentum raised by
the Thanks and Giving
.program, and we will
build on it.
As I- conclude my
column, let me thank the
many staff members,
volunteers and donors
that we will continue to
provide the funds needed
to maintain this "miracle

Another breakthrough was
achieved at the end of

threatening to reallocate Waha
to other foreign firms.
Even once the
rapprochement between
Libya and the West had been
confirmed, negotiations
between Tripoli and the Oasis
Group proved difficult The
Libyan minister of energy,
Fathi Omar bin Shatwan,
insisted that the government
wanted the US companies "to
come back under the old
contracts that were operating
when we initiated the standstill
agreement but they (Oasis)
want new contract and
different terms." However, a
compromise was reached and
a deal announced on 29
December that should see the
Oasis Group return to Libya.
Under the deal, the group
will pay the NOC a total of
$1.3bn. to extend the
concessions covering Waha
by 25 years to 2031. T will
also make a contribution to
unmortised investments made
since 1986 of $30m, that were
originally agreed as part of the
1986 standstill agreement. The
NOC will take a 59.16% stake
in the venture, with the

Hassan-Beck continued: "We

high prices are here to stay,
upstream operators are
becoming increasingly eager
to secure new acreage and
production capacity. The bids
appear to be increasing as a
wealthy pool of oil companies
chase an ever dwindling
supply of available acreage,
much of which has been
ignored in the past because it
was not particularly
prospective but Libya is
something of a case apart.
The impact of sanctions is a
far more important
explanation of the lack of
development in the Libyan oil
sector and several other factors
now make the country an

attractive option. While
deepwater development will
undoubtedly be far more
expensive, Libya is well
known for its attractive
production costs of around $1
abarel, which make it a viable
option even during periods
when prices were low. In
addition, most Libyan oil is
low sulphur, sweet crude, a
blend particularly favored by
the refiners.
With so much acreage still
to be licensed, it would not be
surprising if Libya became
one of the main destinations
for oil sector foreign direct
investment over the decade to
come.
