John Wycliffe. This
century was fraught with
difficulties for the
Church. The pope was
living in Avignon, France,
and many :suspected he

French politics. In 1378
Pope Gregory XI returned
to Rome, but he died soon,
after. When two popes
were elected, one in
Avignon and one in
Rome, the Great Schism
resulted (1378-1417).

Eid-Ul-Azha is
variously pronounced as
Eid-Ul-Azhi, Edi-Ulu-
Adha. It is also called Baqr-
End that is End of
sacrificing a lamb, goat,
cow, or camel. Lamb or
goat on behalf of one
individual; and seven
persons can share the
sacrifice of cow or camel
on their behalf. The animal
to be sacrificed should be
free of any physical defect.
The lamb or goat should be
minimum of six months;
cow of two years; and
camel of five years.
The End is celebrated on
the 10th of Zil-Hijj, the
twelveth mbnth of lunar
year of the Muslim
calendar. This time, End-
Ulu-Aha is likely to be
celebrated on January 24,
2005, subject to the
appearance of the moon.

The event was the idea
of Emmy-award winning
actress Martha Byrne,
who plays Lily on As the
World Turns. Byrne has

always donated a portion

Jawhari shows the
ranking that classical
Islam assigned to the
Arabic language until the
19th century: Arabic was
known as the language
chosen by God. All
knowledge, including
religious and secular, is
dependent on this
language.
Al-Jawhari's words
reveal an element of
purism, a major feature of
the Arabic language and
one which has
accompanied the
language for more than
1,000 years. The very title
of his dictionary
expresses his major
concern with the precision
of the language: Al Sihah
translates as "correct."


According to classic Arab
thought, what is not part
of the language, i.e., that
which is incorrect, risks
corrupting the language
by disguising itself as
being correct.
Why is this? Since the
advent of the Arabic
language, Arabic speakers
have yearned for the
feeling of their language,
partially because of socio-
linguistic conditions,
which have led to the rise
of the Arabic language in
history. When Arabic
emerged in history around
the 7th century, it already
had a long history, as the
inscriptions attest. It was
characterized by "its
richness and its
flexibility," qualities that
made Arabic superior to
all the known Semitic
languages, according to

The language began to
change with the
disappearance of the
system of ending
declensions. In fact,
ending declensions,
which mark noun cases
and very modes, are a
major feature of the
Arabic language. This
system of marking cases
and modes was fragile
because it was archaic; it
has disappeared from
other Semitic languages
and had already eroded in
pre-Islamic times. With
the Islamic conquests that
began in the 7th century,
the system was totally
destroyed, this the
Bedouins settling in urban
areas rapidly lost their
feel for the language. It
became necessary to teach


the language through
grammar.
However, the Arabic
language met with great
fortune, for it was an
imperial language, the
literary language of the
classical Islamic age, and

the written language of

In classical works,
though, this language was
never designated "our
language," but rather
"their language." Arab
grammarians call the third
person pronoun "the
Absent" thus, we can say
that this language is "the
language of the Absent,"
the Absent referring to
"the Arabs," or the central

Enter John Wycliffe
(1330-1384), whom we
credit with the first
translations of the Bible
into English. Two versions
appeared with his name:
one was extremely literal;
the second, which
appeared after his death,
was closer to the spoken
English of his day. Both
were translated from the
Latin Vulgate, and copies
were made by hand. It is
unlikely that Wycliffe
himself made the whole
translation; he probably
sponsored it. However, the
translation did not receive
a welcome. John Wycliffe
was a dissident and his
followers called Lollards,
were condemned for
translating and for
preaching from the new
English Bible. Some were
burned at the stake.
A synod at Oxford
forbade the translation of
the Bible and the reading


of a vernacular translation
without the specific
permission of the bishop.
Yet that did not stop the
spread of Wycliffe's
Bible, and copies were
found in English homes
even in the' sixteenth
century. Two major events
after Wycliffe's time
altered the course of this
history. The first was the
invention of the printing
press in 1454 by Joharin
Gutenberg, a German
printer. No longer were
Bibles copied by hand.
The second event was the
Protestant Reformation
initiated by Martin
Luther, a German monk,
in 1517. The firm
separation from the pope
took root in England in
1534 under King Henry
VIII. The reformers
insisted on Scripture
alone, and aimed to make
the Bible available to all
people in their own
language.

we raised about $15,000,
Byrne says. The event is
now the second largest
gathering of daytime TV
stars, and has.raised more
than $1 million since its
inception.

what I wanted it to be,"

to be huge, and I knew it
had the potential to do so.
