The Power of
the Holy
Church
Acts 5:12,16-
20, 22-33
And by the hands of
the apostles were many
signs and wonders
wrought among the
people; (and they were all
with one accord in
Solomon's porch.
There came also a
multitude out of the cities
round about unto
Jerusalem, bringing sick
folks, and them which
were vexed with unclean
spirits: and they were
healed every one.
Then the high priest
rose up, and all they that
were with him, (which is
the sect of the Sadducees)
and were filled with
indignation, And laid their
hands on the apostles, and
put them in the common
prison. But the angel of
the Lord by night opened
the prison doors, and
brought them forth, and
said. Go. stind and speak
--in.the temple to the people
all the woids of this life.
But when the officers
came, and found them not
in the prison, they
returned, and told,

safety, and the keepers

the doors: but when we
had opened, we found no
man within. Now when
the high priest and the
captain of the temple and
the chief priests heard
these things, they doubted
of them whereunto this
would grow. Then came
one and told them, saying,
Behold, the men whom ye
put in prison are standing
in the temple, and
teaching the people. Then
went the captain with the
officers, and brought
them without violence:

St. Maron
Father of the
Maronite
Church
According to history,
Maron was not satisfied
with the ordinary
practices of asceticism,
but was "always seeking
for new ways to
accumulate the treasures
of Christian
wisdom." He was the
spiritual father of both
the hermits living near
him and of all the faithful
in the area. With wisdom
and holiness Maron
addressed their pastoral
care and apostolic
endeavors as counselor.
and healer.
Bishop 'Theodoret
described Maron's
disciples with this tribute:
"These anchorites were
virtuous and heroic,
totally dedicated to a life
of contemplative prayer.
They were strangers to
any other consideration of
the world. They were
obedient to" Church
authority and tried to
imitate their predecessor
in their exercises of
austerity. At times, their
acts of penance and
mortification were
excessive, but they were

By Brother John
SSamaha, S.M.
always obedient to
ecclesiastical authority.
Approximately twenty
saints are numbered
among Maron's disciples,
three of whom are
women.
Knowledge of St.
Maron's holiness spread
throughout the Empire,
Some scholars think that
St. Maron and St. John
Chyrsostom studied
together at Antioch before
398. Around 405 John
Chrysostom sent Maron a
letter expressing his great
love and respect, and
asked Maron to pray for
him..
Maron's death
occurred between 407 and
423; some place the date
around 410. Because of
his vast popularity among
the faithful, several riots
broke out at the time of
his death in villages that

Reba Boackle
David For
Vice President
2005

Dear Club Members,
As time approaches for the
summer convention our
thoughts turn to new Federation
Officers. Each club votes based
on their club membership. I
NEED YOUR VOTE!
May I take this means to ask
you, on the club level, to
evaluate the work I have
completed over the last fifteen
years in the Federation with your
help? Working on the Federation
level helps you at home in your
individual clubs. Look at your
young adults who have received
scholarships to college. I have
some new ideas I would like to
implement in the coming year-if
you will give me the opportunity.
The past three years I have
served on the Executive Board,
the last .year as the Vice
.Chairman. Ten years before that
I served on the Scholarship
Committee, the last three as the
Scholarship Director. During
these years there was over.
$148,000 given in scholarships
for our youth to go to college.
The Membership Scholarship
which each member is asked to
add $ 1.00 to send to the
Federation for that scholarship
was started at this time. A
scholarship brunch was started
to honor the donors and the
recipients. Today it is called the
Foundation Brunch. A donor, a
club or a foundation was
honored each year, that
continues today. I compiled a
Scholarship Director's
Handbook which is passed on to

each Scholarship Director.
Before I began my work on
the Scholarship Committee I-
served on the Charity Committee
for two years. As you can see I
am very proud of my heritage

and willing to continue to serve.
May I ask you to continue to
help me to make a difference?
Elect me as your Vice President
in June and let us work together,
for I believe in you and together

our destiny is assured. Thank
you and may God continue to
bless each of you.
Respectfully,
Reba Boackle David

ARABCOM
(continued from page 1)
At the end of June a new
breed of observer flocked
to this home of ancient
civilisation to be brought
bang up to date with the
very latest in high
t e c h nol o g y
communications systems
and services at Arabcom
2005.
Some 500 participants,
most of them trail blazers
in their field, took part in
the event, held under the
patronage of President
Zine El Abidine Ben Ali,
including Arab ministerial
delegations, GSM
operators, regulators,
service 'providers,
consultants investors, and
many others, all gathered
together for the 8th annual
international telecom
,development forum and

expo for the Arab world.
Katia Tayar, CEO of
the Dubai-based Arabcom
Group explained how the
event came into being:
"My inspiration to start a
forum and expo dedicated
to the advancement of
telecommunications in the
Arab states was based on
the realisation that no one
was then doing what
needed to be done to
ensure the Arab states do
not lag behind the rest of
the world in
telecommunications."
The decision to hold
Arabcom 2005 in Tunisia
was very much in keeping
with the country's
determination to establish
itself as a regional hub for
the burgeoning new- ICT
(information and
communications
technology) industry.

"Tunisia," noted Ms
Tayer, was "an obvious
choice" for the hosting of
Arabcom 2005, being "a
natural bridge between
Africa and the Arab world
and all set to become the
regional hub for ICT.
There is political
determination to make
this happen and
development of the ICT
industry is one of the
Tunisian government's
top national priorities,"
she added.
"Technology and social
development go hand in
hand and there have been
several major initiatives
by the government to use

technological
development to support
the development of
human resources. The
development of research
and innovation capacities
through modern
technologies is a key
factor in meeting the
challenges of the future
and enhancing the
country's economic
competitiveness.
Certainly the delegates
were full of praise for the
way the two-day event
was managed and
presented. Some of the
ICT sector's leading lights
were represented,

work has added up. St. Jude
now has 60 inpatient beds,
and they treat 180
outpatients daily; their
budget is in excess of $1
million a day; they've
treated children in all 50
states and 80 foreign
countries and presently

Chairman

historic Gait House on the
Ohio River, there is something
for everyone. In fact,
Louisville has all the earmarks
of a Convention that will be
talked about for years to come.
The outstanding program has
activities for everyone to
enjoy, no matter their age.
I'd like to take this
opportunity to thank our hosts,

Vice President
(continued from page 5)
need to know if each of you
will participate by being listed
Sib the book, as well as by
purchasing a completed
directory. .The;: Souther.m
Federation Boards feels that

have about 4,700 patients
in active status. No patient,
not a single one, has ever
paid for treatment. And, oh
yeah-about that goal of
curing cancer? Thanks
largely to research

85 percent of children with

So, when talking about

The Lebanese American

Federation Convention
Committee consisting of
Sharon Benson, Ray Caeser,
and Bill Frank for helping to
put together a convention that
most certainly will be one that
will be talked about for years
to come. They have worked
tirelessly, contributing endless
hours and much heart to make
this convention a reality for us

the directory would be
invaluable to all its members.
Please, please let your State
Vice President or me know if
you willsupport this endeavor.
Feel free to call or email me
concerning this matter. I will
bie glad to address ~ay of your

to any of my uncles out
there reading this, you can
let go of the idea that we
built the pyramids. We built
something even better ... an

and a first class event.
At this 7411, meeting of
The Southem Federation of
Syrian Lebanese American
Clubs we have much to do:
Join us as the good works
of the Federation Clubs and
Foundations are reviewed and
renewed.
Watch with pride as we
honor our youth.
Attend the deliberations of
the Executive Board meeting
and General Assembly.

Serving as Federation Vice
President has truly been an
honor for me. Both my
paternal and maternal
grandfathers came to this
country in the early 1900's.
They worked hard, became
very successful and left a
legacy of which I am very

healing known as St. Jude
Children's Research
Hospital.
Like his father, his
uncles and Danny Thomas
before him, film director,
screenwriter and producer
Tom Shadyac has an eye
for creating. success,
especially when it comes to
St. Jude.

Help us find the ideas,
financial resources, .and
continuing leadership as we
meet the issues of preservation
and responsibility.
It is only your participation
that can make our Federation
bigger and stronger, preserving
our ideals and heritage for
decades to come!
With Warmest Regards,
Albert F Johary, MD

proud. Being active in the
Southem Federation enables
me to continue to promote our
heritage.
Thank you for your
confidence in me.
