Almost 100 days after
the assassination of former
Lebanese Prime Minister
Rafik Hariri, Lebanon has
gone through a time warp
back into the future, if you
will. "If you don't look at a
newspaper's date, you
might think you are
reading the news from 20
years ago," exclaimed a
friend of mine not long

ago. With the death of
Hariri, a political void is
felt in Lebanon, and with
no new generation able to
reach the acme of power,
the country is left with the
same people who were
busy fighting each other
during the war. Except this
time round, they seem to

SAINT
MARON
Father of the
Maronite
Church
A poet has said that
every great institution is
the lengthened shadow of
one outstanding person.
For the Maronite Church,
that person is St. Maron.
And what a legacy he has
left the Universal Church
and his Maronite
progeny! Today the
Aramaic Maronite
tradition flourishes in
every corer of the world.
Maronite faithful and
hierarchy populate each
continent.
Whatever is known
about the spiritual father
of the Maronite Church
we have received from
Theodoret, Bishop of Cyr.
Cyr was somewhere
between Antioch and
Aleppo. In the fifth
century, about 444,
Theodoret began to
compile a church history
from the resources
available to him in Syria.
Much of his book,
Historia Religiosa,
describes the hermits
living in the region of
Cyr, and in chapter 16

By Brother John
Samaha, S.M.
writes about Maron, who
had a deep and lasting
influence on his disciples.
Theodoret never knew
Maron personally, but
learned about him
through Maron's
disciples. Theodoret
described Maron as "the
one who has planted for
God the garden which
flourishes now in the
region of Cyr." Little is
known of the birth or
youth of Maron because
Theodoret was not
concerned about such
aspects of his life. He felt
that Maron was not born
for this world, but for
heaven.
When Maron chose to
become a hermit and lead
an ascetic life in isolation,
he settled on a rugged
mountain, between Cyr
and Aleppo. On that
mountain was a large

The Amulet

I started reading The
Amulet (Al-Hamalat) and'I

found it interesting and
informative. The Amulet is

full of the history of Iraq..
This novel is about an
American College student,

was sent on an
archeological dig in
Northern Iraq by her father.
According to the legend,

A.M. Coplan, Publisher
The novel kept my
interest and developed
suspense as I rushed to learn
how the story ends. There is
suspense by interspersing,
romance, daily events and
the history of the area. Her
descriptions of these three
components of her story are
quite detailed and range
from the point of view of an
American teenager of the
late. 1970's to that of a
mature parent of three
children by the end of the
book. I recommend this
book as a good way for
adults to learn about Iraq; its

Women in Mosques
(continued from page 1)
women and children sat in
a separate area behind
tinted glass.
With barely a pause,
Asra Nomani made her
choice. Defying age-old
Islamic traditions, she
stepped over a low
partition, sat with the men -
and kicked off a furor.
A man brusquely
approached her: "You are
not allowed to pray here
with men. The women are
on other side." A female
elder coax her out, then lost
patience and tried to lift her
up by the elbow. A man
stared at Nomani and
muttered, "She must be
mentally sick."
Through it all, the petite
woman in pink veil and
long coat stood her ground.
No, she was not going to
move. Yes, she had an
Islamic right to sit there. As
a burly security guard
towered over her, she
'began softly chanrting
"Allahu akbar," God is
great, to keep herself
focused. But she noticed
her fingers trembling ,
Eventually, leaders at
the Islamic Center of
Southern California
cordoned offer space with
a red rope, called other
women to join her and
started the prayer.
"For that Friday prayer,
a woman was able to sit in
the main hall and create a
new reality for our Muslim
world," said Nomani, a 40-
year-old India native,
author and journalist who

lives in Morgantown, WVa.
"We have to take back our
mosques with an
expression of Islam that
fully values women."
Nomani's tactics outrage
many Muslims. Among
them are critics at the
Islamic Center, who
viewed her recent visit
there as a self-serving stunt
to publicize her new
memoir, Standing Alone in
Mecca, and an unfair
ambush of the Los Angeles
mosque, which is known
for its women-friendly
policies.
Mosques- have
traditionally kept the
genders apart because the
prophet Muhammad
ordered them to pray *in
separate rows, leaders say.
This has been interpreted
over the years, they add, as
a way to keep men from
becoming distracted during
prayers.
Still, friends and foes
alike agree that Nomani has
helped bring global
attention to a long-festering
issue: the limits on female
access to Muslim prayer
space, religious leadership
and decision-making
power. Today, a growing
group of Muslims, most of
them North Americans and
some galvanized by the
intense scrutiny .0 lam
since the 9/11 terrorist
attacks are pushing for
wider roles for women.
Such battles over
women's religious rights
and authority have raged in
many faith traditions -
ongoing struggles for

priests and greater female
access to Talmudic studies
in Orthodox Judaism, for
instance.
Among Muslims, many
women complain that they
live double lives, one in the
workplace and one in the
mosque.
"I don't know how
many women I've talked to
who are professors,
doctors, lawyers,
professionals in their
secular lives, treated with
respect, sitting in the front
of the room ... and then you
walk into the mosque, and
you are catapulted back
into some medieval world,"
said Sarah Eltantawi, 28, a
Boston-based
EgyptianAmerican who
says she was "spiritually
damaged" by lifelong
experiences of being
shunted to the back of the
mosque and chastised for
riot covering herself
properly.
Many Muslims are
tackling gender segregation
in the mosque. They are
urging that women be
allowed to pray as a group
behind men in the main
prayer hall, rather than be
physically isolated by
curtains, walls or separate
rooms as they are in .the
majority of U.S. mosques.
The most liberal are
arguing for a hall with men
on one side, women on the
other and a mixedgender
row in the middle for
families who want to pray
together.
Some are also calling for

greater shared leadership,
with more women serving
on governing boards and as
public speakers at
community programs.
Last year, the Islamic
Society of North America,
the nation's largest
umbrella group of
mosques, began a training
program for imams
highlighting the need to
give women leadership
roles and adequate prayer
space behind men in the
main halls.
The Council on
American -Islamic
Relations, a civil rights
group, is planning to
distribute nationally a new
booklet calling for similar
measures, saying that Islam
calls for spiritual equality
between the sexes,
Other Muslims,
however eve are pushing
edgier issues.
The Progressive Muslim
Union of North America,
recently launched by
Eltantawi and others,
sponsored a
groundbreaking town hall
meeting in Los Angeles in
June. to debate the
contentious question of
whether Islam allows
women to lead prayer. The
meeting, which packed the
Religious Center at the
University of Southern
California with both
liberals and traditionalists,
featured Khaled Abou El
Fadl, an Islamic law
professor at the University
of California, Los Angeles,
who believes that Islam

Women in Mosques
(continued from page 5)
requires the most
knowledgeable person to
lead prayer, regardless of
gender.
Arguing that most
Muslims are ignorant of
their own vast and diverse
intellectual heritage, Abou
El Fadl cites examples of
female prayer leaders in the
past, along with three
schools of thought in
medieval Islamic history
that embraced the practice.
Relatively few Muslims,
however, seem to buy that
view. Opponents argue that
evidence for women prayer
leaders in the past is weak
and that no innovations in
worship practices are
allowed. If women lead
prayer in front of
congregations, men will be
distracted by the sight of
them bending over in

prostrations, opponents
also say.
"Men are men," said
Imam Abdul Karim Hasan
of the Bilal Islamic Center
in South Los Angeles. "I
don't care how you cut it-or
shape it, they won't be
thinking about prayer."
While a few women
have quietly led mixed
groups in prayers for years
in the United States,
Canada and South Africa,
the issue exploded across
the Muslim world this year.
A female Islamic scholar,.
Amira Wadud, led a mixed
congregation in prayer at a
New York event covered
by the international media.
The March service by
Wadud, an Islamic studies
professor at Virginia
Commonwealth
University, drew a global
chorus of condemnations
and provoked threats of

violence. An anonymous
appeal for Osama bin
Laden to issue a decree
to kill Wadud was
circulated on the Internet,
prompting Virginia
Commonwealth to move
her lectures off campus -
with remote hook-up -for
the rest of the semester, a
university spokeswoman
said. '
"This issue is a major
challenge to the hegemony
of patriarchal authority,"
said Wadud, who argues
that qualified women have
the right to all positions of
public ritual leadership,
including leading Friday
prayers, delivering
sermons, and performing.
funerals and other
ceremonies.
The scholar asserts that
Islam's concept of
"tawhid," the oneness of
God, along with

Quranic stories that
creation came in pairs,
require gender equality.
But that equality; she says,
became lost over the
centuries as male scholars
and thinkers developed an
Islamic tradition that
relegated women to
"subservience, silence and
seclusion."
Some Muslims say
mosque practices that
appear discriminatory are
not intentionally so.
Shakeel Syed, executive
director of the Islamic
Shura Council of Southern
California, an umbrella
group of the regions
mosques, said much of the
segregation was driven by
purely logistical space
problems, rather than
condescending attitudes
toward women.

Q: Libya is hosting the
African Union Summit in
July and you are here at
the Economic Forum in
Jordan. Where does Libya
stand today, in terms of
allegiance and identity?
A: If you asked my
mother this question she
would say we are Arabs, if
you asked my father this
question he would say we
are African and if you
asked me this question I
would say we are
Mediterranean. We
belong to a continent and
also a regional block. We

are the founders of the
African Union (AU) and
you cannot forget that.
Unfortunately, in the Arab
world we have been
talking of unity and of a
regional block for 35
years and we are still
talking about it.
It is thanks to many
African countries and
their backing that today
we have been able to
reconcile with the West
and Libya is quickly
becoming a model of
successful reform.
In Africa we are seen as
a leading country as
founders of the African
Union and also in the way
we have been able to
tackle and undergo
reform. In the Middle
East, we are a model in
the field of democracy,
our approach to Weapons
of Mass Destruction
(WMD), and economic
reform. Sadly, the Arab
world is going through a
difficult period,

However, all processes

everyone has embarked

Q: Could it be that
Libya is not yet ready for
reform?
A: Reform is taking
place today but the
process was started a long
time ago. For a number of
years the government has
been sending thousands of
scholars to top
universities in Europe and
the United States. We
have upgraded our
schools and universities.
We have also set up
foreign language schools
and are actively
encouraging a greater
partnership with the
Libyan diaspora. We are
also taking a very
pragmatic approach,
including developing
practical business skills,
some of which deal with

the art of negotiating and
dealing with foreign
investors.
Q: There has been
much talk about you
being groomed for-
leadership after your
father, what do you think
of this?
A: In the first place the
Libyan people would not
automatically want me,
-and if that proves to be the
case, then I am not the
best suited for the job. I
have so much more to
learn. It is not because
your father is Picasso, that
you must necessarily be
an artist.

make any sense whatsoever.
No ideology can even
remotely justify what's going
on."
You want a -Muslim
condemnation of terrorism?
How would you like it
delivered?
In the past week, Muslim
groups have been condemning
the attacks via e-mail blasts to
the media, through news
conferences, during a personal
meeting with the British
ambassador, in prayer services
all over the country and,
coming soon to television
stations, with a public service
announcement.
This hardly is new. After-
Sept. 11, Mulim -leaders
issued statements, prayed for
the victims, encouraged relief
efforts and, in somecities, took
out a full-page newspaper ad
signed by 40 groups that said:
"We condemn in the strongest
terms possible the use of terror
to further any political or
religious cause."
Nearly 700,000 Muslims
have signed a "Not in the
Name of Islam" petition on
CAIR's Web site that begins:
"We, the undersigned
Muslims, wish to state clearly

that those who commit acts of
terror, murder and cruelty in
the name of Islam are not only
destroying innocent lives, but
are also betraying the values of
the faith they claim to
represent."
Yet when Ahmed speaks in
public, the most common
question is: Why don't
Muslims denounce terrorism?
This has been a persistent
drumbeat on talk radio, one
that was echoed last year by
syndicated columnist Michelle
Malkin after CAIR took on a
radio host in Boston.
The organization, she
wrote, won't condemn Muslim
fanatics, but it has declared
war on outspoken Americans
who will."
Just last week, following
the London bombings, New
York Times columnist Thomas
Friedman wrote, "To this day,
no major Muslim cleric or
religious body has ever issued
a fatwa condemning Osama
bin Laden."
Juan Cole, a University of
Michigan history professor,
quickly compiled a list of such
;condemnations.- Not -that

Muslim Leaders
(continued from page 14)
people remember diem.
They remember that some
kids danced in the street when
the towers came down.
"There always will be
lunatics who will try to justify
the unjustifiable," Ahmed
said.'
There certainly are
legitimate reasons to question
some Muslim groups (not to
mention some Christian and
Jewish groups). But to say that
Muslims have remained silent
after attacks not only is

inaccurate, Ahmed believes it
fuels Osama bin Laden's Sept.
11 goal of a religious battle.
"That trap needs to be
avoided," Ahmed said. "The
breadth of Muslim voices
against Al-Qaida, against
Osama bin Laden, against
9/11, against such terrorism, is
as broad as it can be, from the
most conservative to the most
liberal voices and everything
in between."
So why don't we hear
Muslim leaders condemning
terrorism?
Maybe we're not listening.
