HALBA, Lebanon A
powerful anti-Syrian bloc
claimed a sweeping
victory Sunday in the last
round of Lebanon's
parliamentary elections
and appeared to have won
control of the nation's
legislature, sending a
resounding message that
Syria's grip on Lebanon is
over.
"Our forecast is for a
clear sweep," said Hani
Hammoud, a spokesman
for the 'anti-Syrian
coalition. He said he
based the claim on exit
polls and a count of nearly
40 percent of the vote.
"This says the Lebanese
people can run their own
political destiny,"
Hammoud said.
A pro-Syrian Christian
leader, Suleiman Franjieh,
conceded defeat on
Lebanese television.
Official results weren't
expected before today.
The slate of candidates
sponsored by Saad Hariri,

the son of slain former
Prime Minister Rafik
Hariri, took command of
the election in northern
Lebanon, where dozens of
candidates battled for 28
seats. Hariri's slate
needed 21 seats to control
the 1284imber
parliament and appeared
to have won at least that
many.
"We want to see new

Acts of the
Apostles
Acts 1:6-12, 14
The disciples asked
Jesus, saying, Lord, wilt
thou at this time restore
again the kingdom to
Israel? And he said unto
them, It is not for you to
know the times or the
seasons, which the Father
hath put in his own power.
But ye shall receive
power, after that the Holy
Ghost is come upon you:
and ye shall be witnesses
unto me both in
Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria,
and unto the uttermost
part of the earth. And
when he had spoken these
things, while they beheld,
he was taken up; and a
cloud received him out of
their sight. And while
they looked steadfastly
toward heaven as he went
up, behold, two men
stood by them in white

apparel; Which also said,
Ye men of Galilee, why
stand ye gazing up into
heaven? this same Jesus,
which is taken up from
you into heaven, shall so
come in like manner as ye
have seen him go into
heaven. Then returned
they unto Jerusalem from
the mount called Olivet,
which is from Jerusalem a
sabbath day's journey.
These all continued with
one accord in prayer and
supplication, with the
women, and Mary the
mother of Jesus, and with
his brethren.

The Maronites
When violent
persecution erupted
toward the end of the
seventh century, many
christians were forced to
abandon their homes,
possessions and fertile
farm land and take refuge
in the protective
mountains of Lebanon.
The Maronites were led
by their first patriarch, St.
John Maron, all the while
preserving their Aramaic
culture and Catholic faith.
Through their efforts
Lebanon became and still
remains the land of
multiple Christian
Churches who maintain
their distinctive identities
and traditions in total
freedom. Eventually the
Maronties spread from
Lebanon Cyprus, Egypt,
Palestine, Iraq, and
Rhodes. In the Middle
Ages they assisted the
Crusaders and offered
them refuge after their
defeat.
Pope Gregory XIII
established in 1584 a
Maronite seminary in
Rome. Later another
Maronite seminary
flourished in Salamanca,

His dedication to the children,

While Dick Shadyac is
retiring as CEO ofALSAC, he
will be returning to the

guidance and advice will be
invaluable and welcomed by
the Boards that he served on as

It's not a message that
Asra.Nomani Muslim,

left-leaning feminist is
planning to heed though
she did contact the FBI
and her local police). Yes,
she's started locking her

But she won't :be

never.
There are those who
see Nomani, a
self-described
"overambitious child of
immigrants," as a
crusader, an activist
lobbying for the right of
Muslim women to pray
side by side with men.
This spring she launched
the Muslim Women's
Freedom Tour, traveling
from city to city to
encourage Muslim
women to assert
themselves in their
mosques. As part of the
tour, women pray in halls
usually reserved for men
and participate in
mixedgender prayer
services led by women.
"It's about time," says
religious scholar and
historian Reza Asian.
"This conception of the
separation of men and
women is something that
never occurred during the
prophet's lifetime." He
adds, "What she has done

Then there are those
who see her as an
opportunist who timed her
Freedom Tour to coincide
with the March
publication of her book,
which talks about her
struggles to reconcile her
faith with her feminism.

her father, Zafar, helped

petitioning to have her
banished for "disrupting

misinformation about
Islam."

Then there are the
threatening emails; the
articles, published around
the world, accusing her of
being a spy in cahoots
with the CIA and Israeli
intelligence; jihadist
message boards
demanding that a fatwa
(religious edict) be issued

glittering gem outcrops

amazing symmetry for a

If your tour guide
doesn't remind you.
refrain from touching tile
formations since oils from
human hands can stop the
rock growth,
Rocks aren't the only
growing things in the
caverns. Small, brown bats
can occasionally be found
taking a nap on the ceiling.
The harmless mammals
like to hang out -
Literally- especially
during colder months to
take advantage of the
constant 52-degree
climate. By summer, most
of them are outside but
don't be surprised to see a
few sleepy stragglers,
which are usually no larger
than a human thumb.
Speaking of wildlife,
be on the lookout for two
or three varieties of trout
in the caverns streams.
Trout play a large part in
the history of Linville

Caverns when, sometime
in the I 1800s, a group of
men discovered the
caverns while trying to
find where the fish in their
streams originated,
The caverns' are
actually three levels and
tourists are only allowed
on the middle one. The
lowest is the water level
where streams meander at
visitors' feet. The upper
level is, honeycombed
with flow stone, a slick,
glass-like form of
limestone, which is too
fragile to stand on. One
section is so perfectly
horizontal, slick and flat,
tour guides refer to it as-
the "ballroom floor
"To make sure nobody

visitors can make a game
out trying to match a
formation with an animal
or famous person. A hint:
George Washington lurks
somewhere in Linville
Caverns as well as a
mysterious figure known

n as "Mr.. Bones.
The history of Linville
Caverns is as fascinating
as its many exotic rock
formations.
Civil War soldiers used
the caves to hide from
enemy troops. Traces of
campfires still exist in tile
cavern's central
chambers. Unfortunately,
smoke from the fires
eventually made it out of
the mountainside and
soldiers thinking they had
found the perfect hideout
often discovered their
fatal mistake too late.
In 1937, the caverns
were open for commercial
touring by John Q.
Gilkey- one of tile larger
chambers is still named
after him.
Thomas Edison once
sent a team of explorers to
the caverns hoping to find
platinum an element

once thought vital in the
production of
incandescent lamps.
Although his team
found no platinum. the
variety of gems in the
caverns sparked more
interest in North Carolina's
geological variety and
helped establish it as "The
Gem State."
Near the end of the
tour, the caverns open to a
"bottomless lake."
Several years ago, when
its owners tried to gauge
the lake's depth, their
measuring device stopped
at its limit: 250 feet.
Visitors can stand on a
metal bridge and gaze
deep into the clear water
thanks to powerful
underwater lighting.
People suffering from
claustrophobia should

Libya's Man
(continued from page 1)
If you want to find
Muammar Gaddaffi's
man in Washington, look
no further than Suite 705
of the infamous Watergate
Office Building.
Since last December,
this three-person mission
has served as the interests
section of the Great
Socialist People's Libyan
Arab Jamahiriya the
official name of a country
that for 17 years' was
blacklisted by the State
Department.
Amazing, as A] i
Suleiman Aujali says,
how times have changed.
"We're very
optimistic," the
gregarious diplomat
declares with a big smile.
"Our relations are
warming up, and we hope
we'll reach full
diplomatic relations
between our two
countries as soon as
possible."
Aujali explained why
Libya decided to change
course, and what needs to
be done in order to renew
the friendship that existed
long before Gadaffi came
to power in 1969.
"I think both sides are
now realistic, after, all
these changes taking
place around the world -
globalisation, terrorism
and the collapse of the
Soviet Union. Both sides
have realized that we can
achieve a lot if we're able
to normalise our
relations," he said.

"it is true that what
we've achieved in the last
few months is incredible,
compared to the boycott
of the last two decades, At
the end of any crisis is
negotiation. People sit
together, talk directly,
explain their problems
and move on. This is what
has happened between
Libya and the United
States."
With only 5.6m
inhabitants, Libya is the
second-largest country in
Africa, rich in oil and gas
reserves. Yet it's been
off-limits to US citizens
since .1986, when Libyan
agents blew up a Berlin

by bombing residential

Benghazi, killing 101
people including Col.
Gadaffi's adopted
daughter.
In December 1988, Pan

apart by a bomb over
Lockerbie, Scotland. Four
years later, the United
Nations imposed
sanctions on Libya after it
refused to hand over for
trial two of its citizens
suspected of involvement
in the attack.
In 1999, however, the
US began secretly
negotiating with Libya
through backdoor
channels, and in August
2003, the Gadaffi regime
agreed to pay $2.7bn as
compensation to- the
families of Lockerbie-
bombing victims. Libya

also formally accepted
responsibility for the
terrorist attack in a letter
to the UN Security
Council, which promptly
lifted all sanctions.
"It was a calculated
economic decision,"
Aujali explained. "We
were suffering very high
costs because of the
sanctions, and.we weren't
able to get certain
technology. This was
costing us about $5bn a
year and we had to
resolve this problem.".
On 20 December, 2003
- as US forces remained
bogged down in Iraq
following their ousting of
Saddam Hussein Gadaffi
dropped another
bombshell by revealing
the existence and
immediate abandonment
of a secret programme to
develop weapons of mass
destruction.
Shortly after Gadaffi's
announcement, the Bush
administration lifted the

Libya's Man
(continued from page 13)
contribute to the Libyan
economy.
According to industry
estimates, Libya
possesses Oil reserves of
36bn barrels, roughly the
same as Nigeria's. Once
full diplomatic and
business ties are restored,
say experts, Libya could
easily rank as the fifth or
sixthlargest oil supplier to
the US, after Saudi
Arabia, Venezuela,
Mexico and Nigeria.
Despite the sanctions,
American oil companies
have used foreign
subsidiaries to monitor
their investments in
Libya, which never
revoked their licences. At
the same time, Libya has
freely traded with Europe,
and in 2003, the country's
oil revenues accounted for
95% of Libya's $14.3bn
in export earnings.
Besides oil, other
promising sectors include
agriculture,
telecommunications and
tourism. Commodities
giant Cargill, for example,
recently sold 750,000 tons
of wheat to Libya; the

country also represents a
large market for meat and
poultry exporters.
"The outlook is very
encouraging," said the
diplomat. "I can see this
reaction from all the
American companies that
have visited Libya."
Aujali, 60, is perfectly
at ease speaking English;
he's also quite conversant
in Spanish and
Portuguese, not to
mention his native Arabic.
Born in the Mediterranean
port of Benghazi, Aujali
studied economics in
college, but chose a career
in international affairs. He
joined the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs in 1969,
and in 1971 went to Great
Britain as third secretary
at the Libyan Embassy in
London.
In 1976, Aujali was
sent to Kuala Lumpur,
where he served for eight
years as, first,, secretary
and later ambassador -
before taking up residence
in Buenos Aires as the
Libyan envoy to
Argentina. In 1988, Aujali
was appointed
ambassador to Brazil,
where he spent another

five years. After over a
decade of international
service, he returned to
Tripoli, where he held
several high-level
positions within the
Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
In 2001, Libya
resumed ties with Canada,
and Aujali's diplomatic
experience made him
Gadaffi's obvious choice
to send to Ottawa, where
Aujali was responsible for
setting up the Libyan
Embassy and encouraging
companies like Petro
Canada and Calgarybased
Talisman Energy Inc. to
invest in his country.
That's exactly what the
seasoned diplomat and
father of five hopes to do
in Washington. But first, a
few minor issues must be
resolved.
For starters, even
though the title on his
business card says
"ambassador", Aujali is
clearly not. He's director
of the Libyan Interests

Section, which is the same
status held by other states
the Bush administration
does not fully recognize,
such as Iran and Cuba.
"We're still under the
protection of the United
Arab Emirates," he
explained. "We're treated
like other embassies and
invited to all functions
organised by the State
Department, but we have
to go through the UAE
Embassy whenever we
want to apply for
something. I hope this
won't last long."
As soon as the Libyan
Interests Section becomes
a liaison office, he said,
the mission will be able to
do many things it can't do
now, such as buy cars
directly and hire local
employees.
Tourist and business
visas for Americans,
however, must still be
issued by the Libyan
People's Bureau in
Ottawa, Canada; since

"Unfortunately," says
Aujali, "we've been
called terrorists, but the
leaders of these
organizations have been
guests of honour in many
countries. We supported
the South African struggle
against apartheid, and
when those leaders were
called terrorists, we called
them freedom fighters.
Now everybody's happy
to receive Mandela."
Some observers say the
only reason Gadaffi
decided to give up his
WMD programme was
the US-led invasion and
overthrow of Iraq's
Saddam Hussein. Was
Gadaffi perhaps scared
he'd be next on the list?
Aujali says absolutely
not.
"This discussion
between Libya and the US
goes back to 1999. The
fact that we came to an
agreement after the Iraq
invasion.is nothing more
than a coincidence," he
insisted.

During the interview,
Aujali barely mentioned
Gadaffi by name so we

"I've met him a few

she said.
Then, tapping her

this person would

"Then we were on the

things. Now change takes
place from the inside."
On Friday, The Florida
Times-Union honored
Saffy for her long career
of changing things from
both the inside and the
outside by giving her the

pressure. The abrupt
pullout left the remnants
of Christian militias, the
Shiite guerrilla group
Hezbollah and Sunni
political kingpins
competing to fill the
power vacuum.
Hariri's chief rival is
the popular former army
commander Michel Aoun,
a Maronite Christian and
relentless critic of the
Syrian regime who
stunned voters and
enraged the antiSyrian
opposition by creating a
ticket anchored by
politicians with close ties

to Damascus. Aoun's
gamble paid off in last
weekend's voting in the
Christian heartland,
where his coalition
delivered a serious
setback to the opposition.
Hariri 's slate had
easily swept the first
round of elections in
Beirut, and candidates
allied with Hezbollah
effortlessly took southern
Shiite strongholds. The
last two rounds, however,
pitched Hariri allies
against Aoun candidates
in tightraces.

Saffy
(continued from page 18)
"She's inspiring," said
Jeanette Helfrich, a retired
attorney who helped Saffy
found Gainesville's
chapter of the National
Organization of Women
in 1972. "She kind of
doesn't take no for an
answer. She prods you
into trying different things
until they work."
The Edna Saffy who
changed things from the
outside the woman who
helped start NOW
chapters and campaigned
passionately for the Equal
Rights Amendment was
the classic angry young
woman. Except she
actually wasn't that
young.
Saffy, who grew up in
Jacksonville and
graduated from Lee High
School, first went to
Gainesville in 1953 to
attend the University of
glorida, She -was, by her
own admission, rather
naive.
"I didn't know I
couldn't do anything I
wanted to do," she said.
That was before she
told an academic advisor -
a man that she was
interested in a career as a
doctor.
"That man rolled on the
floor laughing at me," she
said. "He told me,
'Honey, girls don't go to
medical school."'
Saffy said she was so
shocked by his casually.

toward women he
advised her that her best
career path would be to
find a good husband that
she packed her bags and
quit school without
bothering to officially
withdraw.
A decade later she
decided the time had
come to go back to UF.
"What made me want
to go back was men and
the way they treated
women," she said. "Men
weren't evil, mean or
ugly. They were just
stupid. I couldn't stand
being invisible."
But a semester's worth
of failing grades the
result of her failure to
officially withdraw -
created a problem.
"No one would let me
in," she said. "They didn't
even want to talk to me."
But she finally found
one professor who
listened.
I. explained to him I-
wasn't the same person,"'
she said. "He signed his
name, he sponsored me. I
had what life seldom
gives a second chance."
He told her he expected
a B average. Instead she
recorded straight A's.
Drawn to the idea. of
teaching, she earned her
bachelor's degree in 1967
and followed with of
master's degree in
rhetoric and public
address in 1968. She was
hired that summer as an
English instructor at what
is now Florida

She also became
deeply involved in the
women's move-, ment.
NOW had formed in
1966, and in '1970 Saffy
and some friends founded
a Jacksonville chapter.
She remembers their first
demonstration, standing
outside the federal
building on Bay Street
and carrying a sign
declaring, "I.don't give- a
damn about ring around
the collar," a reference to
an ad for a popular
laundry detergent.
After returning to UF
to work on her doctorate,
Saffy founded a NOW
chapter in Gainesville in
1972 and joined in the
battle against Florida Blue
Key, an influential
campus organization that
refused to open its
membership to women.
Blue Key eventually
chose to admit women
instead of losing its
funding.

In 1975, Saffy was a
key organizer of a march
on the state capitol in
support of the Equal
Rights Amendment. An
estimated 3,000 women
participated, and the
amendment passed in the
state House in both 1975
and 1977. But it failed by
a few votes in the state
Senate and never gained
approval in enough state
legislatures to become
part of the Constitution.
By then, Saffy was
beginning to make the
transition from passionate
outsider to influential
insider. She worked as a
delegate or -alternate
delegate at four
Democratic conventions,
the last in 2000. She also
served on. President
Clinton's Advisory
Committee on the Arts of
