Our Need for
2005
1 am the New Year. I
am the new chapter in
your book. I offer you a
new life that gives you
unusual joy, new treasure
of perfect peace and sure
hope of eternal life, I want
you that your days are
numbered, and your
thoughts, words and

heaven. God's computer
makes no mistakes; I am
your opportunity to
practice what you have
learned during the last
about life. Now receive
from your best resolution
of this coming year of
2005. 1 beg you to live it.

the LORD giveth

Is There a
Byzantine
Mariology?
Researching this
question leads to a
seeming paradox. On one
hand we find a
tremendous richness of
Marian thought in the
liturgy, but on the other
hand a virtual absence of
specifically Mariological
studies in theology. The
Mariological experience
and piety of the Byzantine
Churches Catholic and
Orthodox seem to be
embodied almost entirely
in their worship. But we
find no prominent
theological reflection on
the subject, nothing that
would parallel the
specialized mariological
treatises of the Western
Church. Theology
manuals contain no
chapters dealing with the
place of Mary in the
economy of salvation.
The veneration of Mary,
which is so central in
Byzantine worship has
not been extensively
expressed, analyzed, or
evaluated systematically.
This scarcity of
theological reflection may
seem to some a deficiency
in Byzantine theology.
How could the Byzantine
Church which never prays
to 'God or Jesus Christ

Libya
(continued from page 6)
is seeking to develop a,
continent-wide network
of service stations and
fuel supply contracts.
One matter that may
take Some Little to
resolve is. the control of
oil assets held in Libya by
US firms prior to the
imposition of oil industry
sanctions in 1986. The
Oasis Group -of US
companies, comprising
Amerada Hess, Conoco
and Marathon Oil,
operated a consortium in
Libya that produced
around 750,000 barrels a
day (b/d) in the mid-
1980s, while Occidental
Petroleum Corporation of
the US .also operated
fields in the country. The
assets of all four
companies in Libya were
frozen in 1986 and over
the past 15 years Tripoli
has threatened to take all
their, assets back into
public ownership for
redistribution to foreign

firms that were prepared
to operate in,the country.
The government did not
act upon this threat but
there is no doubt that all
fields will require some
redevelopment work after
being mothballed for 18
years
Apart from the four US
firms, Eni-Agip of Italy,
Hellenic of Greece,
Austria's OMV, Repsol of
Spain and Australian firm
Woodside we all already
active in Libya. In-March,
Anglo-Dutch oil giant
Shell signed a major deal
with the main Libyan
state owned oil company,
the aptly named National
Oil Company (NOC),
which controls over half
of the country's oil
production. 'the two firms
signed up to a long-term
exploration and
production deal and also
plan to develop liquefied
natural gas (LNG) plants.
Specific project plans will
probably be announced
over the coming year but

it is likely that LNG
projects could be
developed with the UK
market in mind, taking
into account the UK's
need to boost its gas
imports.Shell was
previously active in Libya
from the 1950s until the
early 1970s.
Libya possesses proven
oil reserves of 36bn
barrels but this is almost
certainly a gross
underestimate of its true
hydrocarbon riches,
because of the lack of
time and money put into
exploration work over the
past 20 years. Despite the
existence of a well
established oil sector, a
large proportion of the
country's acreage is
unexplored and only
around 25% of the land
surface has ever been
licensed.
US aid UN sanctions
not only prevented US
and other firms from
developing Libyan oil
fields but also prevented
the North African country
from importing vital
machinery. and spare
parts. The longer the
sanctions lasted the more
Libya struggled to
maintain production
levels. National
production peaked at
3.3m b/d in 1970 and the
government hopes that
this figure can eventually
be regained.
Current output of 1.7m
b/d should remain steady
in the short term, both
because of OPEC quotas

and the lack -of spare
production capacity, but
capacity is likely to rise
sharply over the next few
years on the back of large
scale foreign investment.
'the government's initial
target of increasing
production to 2m b/d by
2010 seems eminently
achievable. Its twin aim of
attracting $30bn
of foreign investment
by the same date seems
more challenging but is
possible if sufficiently
attractive deals can be
offered. Ultimately,
however, the oil law of
1955 needs to be redrafted
in. favour of private
enterprise.
French firm Compagnie
General de Geophysique
(CGG) has been awarded a
contract. by the NOC to
undertake seismic studies
of several offshore areas
during the second half of
this year and first six
months .of 2005. Apart
from the 60,000 b/d el-
Bouri field, most existing
production takes place
onshore but technical
advances in offshore oil
production over the past,
15 years could encourage
offshore exploration.
New acreage aside,
there is some scope for
developing -fields in
established areas, such as

attendees created
memories that will warm

As usual, the Big Easy
provided a perfect
backdrop for Lebanese
and Syrians from all over
the country to celebrate
their heritage. There were
many opportunities to
soak in the cultural
richness of our host city.
For starters, there was a
full city tour that

highlighted some of New
Orleans' premiere
features, including the
National D-Day Museum.
The singles celebrated
with karaoke at the Cat's
Meow on Bourbon Street,
while other partygoers
went to the famous Mid-

(Congratulations, by the
way, to our top three
bowlers: David Karam,
Eric Poje and Steve

While some hit the city
for fun, others took
advantage of activities in
the hotel. Of course, the
hospitality room was
stocked with delicious

provided by members of
the host clubs. And then
there was ZINGO, an
Arabic-style Bingo game
that provided hours of
entertainment for many.
In addition to these
festive activities, there
were several touching
celebrations that shaped
this convention. First,
there was the spectacular
Guardian Angel Reception

the future of Lebanese and
Syrian youth. Indeed, Dr.

powerful one, as a record
number of people attended
this momentous event

warming convention goers
was the sight of beautiful
young ladies waving from

From July 7-11 ",this
was definitely the place to

especially notable this
year. From the many

the disco and snacking on
pizza at the pajama party,
to that group of young
guys who led the dabke
all night long (you know
who you are), it was clear
that a new group of Syrian
and Lebanese youth is
finding its place in the
Southern Federation.
Certainly, this was this
goal -to make our heritage
an enduring one when the
founders of this
Federation set out to
create it 73 years ago.
The convention
culminated with the
annual banquet (filet
mignon and crawfish
cakes included!) where
the two host clubs
celebrated their joint
effort and positive

experience of coming
together to plan this
convention. Finally, there
was one last chance to
dabke, and we did so until
the wee hours of the
morning. When Sunday
morning came, Father
John Azar from Atlanta
said a beautiful Melkite
Catholic Liturgy and
amidst the backdrop of the
farewell breakfast, friends
and family bid each other
good-bye until the next
time. Until then, we hold
clear those memories
shared by all who passed a
good time in New Orleans
at the 73 rd annual
convention. Submitted by

yea, every good path.
When wisdom entereth

understanding shall keep
thee: To deliver thee from

from the man that speaketh
froward things; Who leave
the paths of uprightness, to

darkness; Who rejoice to
do evil, and delight in the
frowardness of the wicked;
Whose ways are crooked,

The Bible says the
judgment of God will
begin at the house of God.
1 Peter 4:17. To escape
this judgment, put your
trust in Jesus Christ, and
obey his word, the Bible.
This is my advice for
2004.
We believe that the

Holy Bible is God's only
book to man. God is not a
God of confusion to send
two books. God knows
the end from the
beginning. The Bible is
the only book that is
inspired by the Holy
Spirit of God and it is hard
to understand unless you
have the Spirit of God
through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Listen to what the
Bible contains.
This Bible contains the
mind of God, the state of
man, the way of salvation,
the doom of sinners, and
the happiness of believers.
Its doctrine is holy, its
precepts are binding, its
histories are true, and its
decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe
it to be safe, and practice
it to be holy. It contains
light to direct you, food to
support you, and comfort
to cheer you. It is the

pilgrim's staff, the pilots

In the Byzantine mind
this seeming absence of

The Byzantine scholar

proper locus of Mariology
is in liturgy and prayer,
that is in worship. This is
reminiscent of Prosper of
Aquitaine's maxim, "Lex

In Eastern Christianity,
worship and liturgy are
paramount. Liturgy is not
seen as an action of the
community. Liturgy is the
procession or entrance
into the eschatological
reality of the Kingdom of
God. It is the meeting

and the Kingdom of God

of salvation themselves,
because although these
occurred historically they
also occur outside the

While this Byzantine
tradition differs from the
theological elaboration
common in the West, it
nonetheless "belongs to the
full catholicity and the
apostolicity of the Church"
(Vatican 11, Decree on
Ecumenism, n. 17).
Some in the West have
speculated that the

which was lived in
Byzantine territory, may

have contributed to fuller
liturgical celebration of
the Theotokos in the East.
This development gave
the East a more satisfying
and habitual expression of
devotion to Mary, and
would support the notion
that the proper locus of
Mariology is primarily in
liturgy.
The West, which lacks
such regular liturgical
expression, sought other
means of elaborating
Marian devotion, such as
defining privileges and
giving impetus to various
movements.
