Jesus Is The
Living Word
Of God The
Bible Is The
Written Word

Of God
We read in the prophet
Isaiah 53:1 "Who hath
believed our report? and
to whom is the arm of the
Lord revealed?" The
Muslims believe that their
Coran .is the last message
from God. My answer to
the Muslims is that they
must understand that God
is God. He is Almighty.
He knows the end from
the beginning. He is not a
God of confusion or a
man to forget to give the
world two books. God
said in Revelation 22:18-
19 'Tor I testify unto
every man that heareth
the words of the prophecy
of this book, If any man
shall add 'unto these
things, God shall add unto
i him the plagues that are
written in this book: And

iev. rrea iviassaonl
if any man shall take
away from the words of
the book of this prophecy,
God shall take away his
part out of the book of
life, and out of the holy
city, and from the things
which are written in this
book." God doesn't
change His
commandments or change
His mind to correct a
mistake. I know for sure
that 75% of the Coran is
taken from the Bible to
deceive the world that the
Coran and the-Bible are
the same. Also, 25% of
*the Coran is myth and
curses upon the infidel.
We are not infidels! The
prophet Mohammed said

"Ecumenical"
or "General"?
The terms "universal,"
"ecumenical," and
"general" are ordinarily
used interchangeably, and
somewhat loosely. But it
is important to be
accurate and note the
distinctions.
"Ecumenical" comes
from the Greek word for
"universal." A truly
ecumenical council, then,
is a gathering that
included representatives
of the church from all
parts of the world. By that
definition, the first seven
major councils were
ecumenical, as Chalcedon
called itself in 451,
because they included
bishops from the eastern
and western parts of the
Roman Empire,
considered to be the entire
world at that time. In fact,
very few western bishops
were present at some of
those meetings.
While the separated

see that man is three in
one, body, soul, and spirit.
God created us in His

same nature of God. In
Luke 1:46, "And Mary

my spirit hath rejoiced in
God my Saviour." This
proves that Jesus is her
God and Saviour. From
this we understand that
Jesus is older than his
mother. Jesus was before
the foundation of the
world (as Creator). We are
not Heathen (meaning
that we believe in more
than one God) as the
Muslims claim. In the

father's name. Once I met
in Africa a truck driver, I
stopped him and said,
Mary conceived by the
Holy Spirit and she gave
birth to a son, whom
Joseph named "Jesus"
whose Son is he? He
answered me fast, "Jesus
is the Son of God." I told
him he would go to

Be sure! I love you

Numerous provincial or
local councils or synods
met during the first three
centuries of Christianity,
especially during tile third
century, to handle matters
of doctrine and discipline.
These earliest church
meetings in North Africa,
Rome, Gaul, Asia Minor,
and Iberia paved the way
to Nicaea 1, the first
general council. Many
local meetings, some
attended by popes or their
delegates, also met during
the Middle Ages. Today
regional synods of
bishops continue to meet,
sometimes in Rome, and
frequently in die home
countries as national
synods or conferences.
A Concluding Review
The time between
councils, their duration,
and their attendance
reveal a wide variance.
Counting twentyone
general councils may lead
one to think
that they were -called
about one each century.

Samaha
(continued from page 11)
A. Three centuries elapsed
before Christianity was
recognized by the Roman
Empire. Only then was the
first general council
convened. Then eight
councils sat in the 545
years between Nicaea 1
(325) and Constantinople
IV (869-870). Two and a
half centuries later the
seven medieval councils,
Lateran I (1123) to Vienne
(1311-1312), met over the
next 189 years. With the
passing of another century
two more general councils
met within three decades:
Constance (1414-1418) to
Basel-Ferrara-Florence-
Rome (14311445). In the
sixteenth century Lateran
V (1512-1517) followed
mote than sixty years later,
succeeded by Trent, which
met in three stages over
1545-1563. Three
centuries transpired before

the next council, Vatican 1
(1869-1870). Another
century, and Vatican 11
(1962-1965) met.
General councils varied
in duration. Lateran II sat
only a week, while
Constance (1414-1418)
met for three and a half
years of steady activity.
But length of time is no
indicator of importance or
achievement, for Lateran
IV gathered for only
twenty days and was the
most impressive of the
medieval councils.
Vatican 11 met 281 days
over four autumn
gatherings, but, as at most
councils, a great deal of
work took place before
and after the four
sessions. Lateran V met
for five years, 1512-1517,
but accomplished little.
Concerning
participation, as few as a
dozen members were
present during a low point

at Constantinople TV
(869-870), and only
seventeen during one
session of Trent in 1551-
1552. In striking contrast
2,540 packed St. Peter's
Basilica for the first
session of Vatican 11 in
1962. But the historical
period of a general
council was not

necessarily a big
influence on attendance.
In spite of difficulties in
travel and communication
during the ancient and
medieval eras, about 600
took part in Chalcedon
(451), more than 400 at
Lateran IV (1215), and
nearly 900 at Constance
(1414-1418).

Even though each
general council exhibited
distinctive characteristics,
a common thread runs
through all. Each council
rose to the occasion and
responded to the urgent
needs of its day,
Hopefully this brief and
broad view of conciliar
history offers a context for

a better appreciation of
our church's growth and
development, and places
the church's life in clearer
perspective. Perhaps it
will. whet our appetites
for delving a little deeper

Maalouf
(continued from page 17)
will see some changes. B)
Some Arab countries
would refuse to allow any
declaration of the large
projects we finance. C) At
the Department of. State
and USAID there is a
sense of not taking credit
publicly for programs we
sponsor. I think this is
changing somewhat
nowadays and our public
diplomacy is working
toward more public
acknowledgement of the
work we're doing.
Q-5: Let's talk about
MEPI. Why did the press
and/or the governments of
the Arab World drop the
word "partnership" when
referring to the initiative?
Was that intentional or a
given reflex reaction, or
both?
MEPI started 3 years
ago, still exists and no one
has dropped the
"partnership" aspect out

of it. But President Bush
started another initiative
called the Greater Middle
East and lately and after
the G8 meeting in. Sea
Island, Georgia the name.
changed to the Broader
Middle East and North.
Africa in an effort to
engage our European
allies. The MEPI program
is still going strong; it is
managed by an office in
the Bureau of Near
Eastern .Affairs at the
Department of State; its
director is Alina
Romanowski. State,
USAID, and other U.S.
government agencies are
working closely together
to make this Presidential
initiative a success.
Q-6: President Bush
has repeatedly said in
many occasions that there
is a difference between
Islam the religion, which
he respects, and extreme
militant interpretation" of
this great religion. Yet,

somehow, US policies are
very unpopular in the
Arab World. Why is that
so in your opinion?
President Bush said
several times that Islam is
a great religion, and upon
the 9/11 disaster President
Bush made a trip to the
local mosque in
Washington to send
exactly this signal to all
Americans. Dr. Rice said
that first we must work to
dispel destructive myths
about Americarf society
and about- American
policy. Second, we must
expand dramatically our
efforts to support and
encourage the voices of

moderation and tolerance
and pluralism within the
Muslim world. So, as you
see, there is much effort
underway, especially
since President Bush is
the first US President to
call for a Palestinian State
living side by side with
Israel in security, peace
and prosperity. I call on
all the Middle Easterners
to realize this fact and act
accordingly.

world. President Bush
said that the United States
has no desire to dominate,
nor ambitions of-
becoming an empire. Our
aim, he said, is a
democratic peace a
peace founded upon the
dignity and the rights of
every man and women.
So, I hope the people of
the Middle East will see
this and understand our
actions. We are there to
help them and make their
lives better
Q-8: President Bush's
MEPI talks about
fostering and rooting
democracy in the ME, yet
opponents to this
initiative claim that
previous US
administrations have
supported some "less-than
democratic" regimes in
the region that are in
power today. What do you
*say to them?
We are not responsible

for the past actions of
others. Today President
Bush has a forward
strategy of freedom and
he means it; and, most
importantly, he is.sincere
about it. The President
believes that for the last
five decades, America and
our allies excused and
accommodated the lack of
freedom in the Middle
East, hoping, as President
Bush said," to purchase
stability at the price of
liberty". Of course, we
got neither. And Dr. Rice
in a speech before the
U.S. Institute of Peace
elaborated more about the
new policy.
Q-9: According to the
reports I have, the Bush
administration has
promised more to the
Palestinian cause than any
other US administration.
It has also done and
invested in many projects
in the region than any
other previous
administration. Yet, there

remains a high level of

the administrations' role

so, and is that particularly
frustrating to you, and the
State Dept.?
You are right and
Chairman Arafat said
recently that he made
many mistakes regarding
this issue. It is important
that the Palestinians
realize that the road map
is the only way to solve
this centuries-old

problem, and I hope they
will stop all suicide
bombings and bring new
leadership to tackle this
issue. On the other hand
Dr. Rice said: "Israel must
meet its responsibility
under the road map and
help create conditions for
a democratic Palestinian
state to emerge". So you
really-need two to tango.

To all members of the Islamic
community.
My-name is Samina Ameen and I am the
director of Ameen People Islamic
Montessori School in Tarrant County. It has
been brought to my attention that the
board of directors and Religious director at
AI-Hedaya have distributed a letter in
which they claim, and I quote, "AI-Hedayd
is the only full-time Islamic school in
Tarrant county," The letter is signed by
Imam Moujahed Bakach and Nizam
Peerwani. I just want to set the record
straight that this is completely untrue
statement and Imam Mujahid Bakach and
Nizam Perwani who are completely aware
that there is another full-time Islamic
school in Tarrant County choose to make
this false statement to raise money for their
school. We at Ameen People do not see
AI-Hedaya as our competition. We are a
Montessori school and they are traditional.
Two different methods of education being
offered to the community allowing you to
choose which is best for your child. In fact
because we only go up to fourth grade, I
have on many occasions recommended Al-
Hedaya for parents who seek an Islamic
school with higher grades. It was a
complete shock to me to see that the
Imam and Treasurer of an Islamic school
could make such a fictitious statement. I
used to respect these individuals,
influential members of our Islamic
community, but if we cannot expect
honesty from our Imam and leaders of our
schools then how can we trust them to
educate our children in the Islamic way,
teaching them honesty in all situations.

Q-1 3: Is Iraq the ideal
starting point to foster and
promote democracy in the
Arab Word, or is it
Lebanon as many have
argued given its long
history of its "quasi-
democratic" system, and
public mood?
No doubt that Lebanon
had a long experience in
democracy, and the civil
society is much better
organized than any other
country in the region. In
my opinion Lebanon
might have been the
launching pad for
democracy in the region,
but obviously we remain
deeply concerned by the
current course of events.
Our view is very clear:
that Lebanon -and the

Lebanese should be able
to determine their own
future, free of any and all
outside interference. Iraq,
however, is in a central
and unique place in the
Fertile Crescent, and
-change there could reach
both ends of the crescent.
Q-14: Implementing
and rooting democracy in
a region such as the
Middle East- will
undoubtedly take many
years- Is the Bush
administration and
s u b s e q u ent
administrations
committed to this
undertaking, and is
congress committed to
continue funding it until it
sees it through?
The Bush
administration is totally
committed to the Broader

Africa's Initiative. In its
recent meeting the G88
allies pledged their
support and .called forz

democracy. Congress is
calling for hearings to
evaluate our public
diplomacy efforts; So,
yes, this is a huge
undertaking and President
Bush and our allies
around the world are
serious about it.
Q-15: Democracy and
Reform supporters in the
region are concerned that
they maybe left out of the
equation, and possibly
lose the current support
should the current players
in the region reach an
understanding. What can
you say to them to address
their concerns?
President Bush is

trying by all means
possible to convince all
parties' in the Middle East
that the new policy of
pursuing a forward
strategy of freedom is the
answer to so many needs-
in the region. I think many
people are seeing this,
and, in my judgment, it is
going to have a greater
affect in the years to
come.

Afghan Women
(continued from page 5)
was 18, her family sold
her for the equivalent of
about $1,200 into a forced
marriage with a man she
had never met. She moved
from the city to a village,
where her new husband
never allowed her to leave
the house. She was treated
as little more than a
servant, taking orders
from her in-laws even
from an 11-year-old girl.
Eight months ago,
Mohamedi poured cooking
off over her head and chest
and announced that she
was going to set herself on
fire. Her in-laws dared her
to. They beat her and held
her. She broke free and lit a
match, immediately
engulfing her face and
upper body in flames.
"It was a kind of protest
against the pressure," said
Mohamedi, who survived
the ordeal but carries its
scars her left arm is
badly burned and her. chin
is bound to her chest by

her own skin.
"I didn't care about my
life," she said, speaking
quickly and .softly,
tugging at the beige shawl
that covers her disfigured
features. "If I was killed, I
would be free of him. If I
survived, I would be free
of him, too."
Mohamedi's story is
hardly unique in
westernmost Afghanistan,
where, three years after
the fall of the Taliban,
women remain subject to
many legal, religious and
cultural restrictions, and
domestic violence is
endemic. So far this year,
at least 180 women and
girls have been taken to
the rudimentary burn

ward in Herat's hospital.
More than 100 have died.
All are believed to be
victims of self-
immolation, though many,
in the presence of their
husbands or relatives,
later deny they were
attempting suicide and
blame their injuries on
cooking accidents. The
majority of them, like
Mohamedi, were in their
teens or midtwenties, sold
into forced marriages and
victims of constant abuse.
Last year, the
Afghanistan Independent
Human Rights
Commission, using
records from the burn unit,
recorded 300 suspected
cases of women and girls
setting themselves on fire;
more than 80 percent of
them died.
'The commission says
the actual number of
women who have resorted
to selfimmolation is far
higher than what is
reflected in hospital
records. In addition to

those taken to the hospital,
many more may be dying
in isolated villages, rights
workers say
"Why does it happen?-
Because of poverty in
society," said Qazy
Ghulam Nabi Hakak, the
Herat regional program
manager for the human
rights commission. "The
families that can't survive
engage, their young
daughters to older men....
AnCther problem is the
tradition of the people.
Conservative -families
don't allow their women
to sit with men, to work
with men in an office or to
walk open-faced from
their houses. Women feel
like they are in prison, and
under that pressure, they
commit suicide."
Herat province, which
borders Iran, is more
religiously conservative
than many parts of
Afghanistan. In rural
areas, men expect women
to stay indoors or to cover
