Matthew 24: 27. 34 -
39, 44
For as the lightning
cometh out of the east,
and shineth even unto
the west; so shall also
the coming of the Son
of man be. Verily I say
unto you, This
generation shall not
pass, till all these things
be fulfilled. Heaven
and earth shall pass
away, but my words
shall not pass away.
But of that day and
hour knoweth no man,
no, not the angels of
heaven, but my Father
only. But as the days of
Noah were, so shall
also the coming of the
Son of man be. [38] For
as in the days that were
before the flood they
were eating and
drinking, marrying and
giving in marriage,
until the day that Noah
entered into the Ark,

flood came, and took
them all away; so shall
also the coming of the
Son of man be.
Therefore be ye also
ready: for in such an
hour as ye think not the
Son of man cometh.

Rev. 19: 1- 20
And after these
things I heard a great
voice of much people
in heaven, saying,
Alleluia; Salvation, and
glory, and honor, and
power, unto the Lord
our God: [For true and
righteous are his
judgments; for he hath

Why did the rose
become a relatively
important symbol
through the Christian
ages? Is there a
Biblical foundation?
Although wild roses
grew in Palestine at the
time of ancient Israel
and of Jesus, the rose is
mentioned neither in
the Hebrew Bible nor
in the New Testament.

lin the Greco-Roman
culture, the rose
represented beauty, the
season of spring, and
love. It also spoke of

feast called rosalia was
a feast of the dead.

In Latin Christian
iconography the first
use of the rose appears
in scenes representing
the next world,

When Lou read a

three children were

Lou said. "In my eyes,

his efforts to capture a

"I knew my God was

Speaking in uniform

"Putting a man with
such extremist views in
a critical policy-making
position sends entirely
the wrong message to a
Muslim world that is
already skeptical about
America's motives and
intentions," said CAIR
Executive Director
Nihad Awad.
"Everyone is entitled
to their own religious
beliefs, no matter how
ill-informed or bigoted,
but those beliefs should
not be allowed to color
important decisions
that need to be made in
the war on terrorism.
General Boykin should
be reassigned to a
position in which he
will not be able to harm
our- nation's image or
interests."

Awad said Muslims
worship the same God
as Christians and Jews.
He noted that Arabic
language Bibles use the
word "Allah" when
referring to God and
quoted the Quran,
which states: "Say ye:
"We believe in God and
the revelation given to
us and to Abraham,
Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob,
and the Tribes, and that
given to Moses and
Jesus, and that given to
(all) Prophets from
their Lord. We make
no distinction between
one and another of
them and it is unto Him
that we surrender
ourselves." (Quran,
2:136)

"We call on
Americans of all faiths
to reject any attempts to
turn the war on
terrorism into a
religious crusade.
President Bush and
Secretary Rumsfeld
should also take this
opportunity to further
distance themselves
from those who
actively promote the
clash of civilizations
and religions," said
Awad.

Iranian Wins Nobel Peace Prize
continued from page 1

the peace prize.
Ebadi --- who also is
Iran's first female judge --
was hailed around the
world as a courageous
champion of political
freedom after the
norwegian Nobel
Committee honored her
for promoting peaceful
and democratic solutions
in the struggle for human
rights.
The prize, announced
yesterday in Oslo,
Norway, also gave hope
to the dispirited reformers
challenging Iran's ruling
clerics that the 56 year
old lawyers's newfound
clout and international
stature may breathe life
into their tired ranks.
"This prize doesn't
belong to me only. It
belongs to all people who
work for human rights
and democracy in Iran,"
Ebadi said in Paris, where
she was attending a
conference.
Ebadi, who was jailed
for three weeks in 2000,
has been a forceful
advocate for women,
children and those on the
margins of society.
"As a lawyer, judge,
lecturer, writer and

activist, she has spoken
out clearly and strongly in
her country, Iran, far
beyond its borders," the
Nobel committee said in
its citation.
Reformers in Iran may
now expect even more: a
firebrand willing to
directly battle the
powerful theocracy in the
model of other history-
shaping Nobel laureates
such. as Nelson Mandela
and Lech Walesa.
"She is an international
figure now," said Isa
Saharqis, a prominent
reformer and editor of the
monthly political journal
Aftab. "The conservatives
can not close their eyes to
this."
Iranian state media
waited hours to report the
Nobel committee's
decision -- and then only
as the last item on the
radio news update.
It was not until late
yesterday that Iran issued
an official statement, with
government spokesman
Abdollah Ramezanzadeh
congratulating Ebadi for
her prize.
"We hope more
attention will be paid to
the opinions of Mrs..

Ebadi both inside and
outside Iran more than
before," he said.
At her news
conference in Paris,
Ebadi said Iran's most
pressing human rights
crisis is the lack of free
speech, and she urged the
government to
immediately release
prisoners jailed for
expressing their opinions.
"There is no difference
between Islam and human
rights," Ebadi said.
"Therefore, the religious
ones should also welcome
this award. The prize
means you can, be a
Muslim and at the same
time have human rights."
Reformers appear
ready to look for direction
and unity from Ebadi,
who is scheduled to
return to Iran on Tuesday.
One of the first tests
could be February
parliamentary elections,
which many reformers
have suggested they
would shun as a show of
frustration.
Ebadi served as Iran's
first female judge in the
waning years of the
Western-backed
monarchy, which was
toppled by the Islamic
REvolution of 1979,
when she was forced to
resign.
She turned her law
office into a base for
rights crusades and
assaults on the
establishment on issues
such a persecution of
dissidents and now-rare
punishments such as
stoning and flogging for
social offenses.

Before
establishing AMEEN,
CHF engaged Dr.
Baydas to conduct a
study on the Lebanese

study clearly showed
that small businesses

Dr. Baydas relates
that, "AMEEN started

years in the southern
town of Ghazieh
applied for a $500 loan
to buy a used sewing
machine so he could
work more efficiently
and with higher quality.
After repaying his loan,
he applied for a second
loan of $1,500 to repair
the ceiling of his tailor
shop. He again repaid
the loan with on-time
monthly installments

Dr. Mayada Baydas

and then applied for a
third loan of $1,300
which he used to
purchase supplies and
build up his inventory.
Similarly, a 62
year-old woman who
has been running a
small grocery shop in a
Beirut suburb for 30
years was able to
secure two loans, the
first for $500 and the
second for $700, to
purchase additional
items to stock her
shelves, thus increasing
the volume of her
business. Additional
beneficiaries of
AMEEN include the
small restaurant owner
who borrowed $1,000
to buy a chicken
rotisserie as well as the
42 year-old baker who
was able to open her
second bakery thanks
to two successive loans.
Within the space
of only four and one-
half years, 17,546 loans
totaling $21,089,050
have been disbursed

hate crime.
The Washington-
based Islamic civil
rights and advocacy
group said the woman,
who was wearing an
Islamic head scarf, was
attacked from behind in
a K-Mart parking lot in
Springfield, VA. The
white male teenage
attacker allegedly
shouted, "you terrorist
pig," before running
away.

The 47-year-old
convert to Islam was
treated at a local
hospital for a 2-3 inch
deep wound on her
lower back. She was
released from the
hospital later that same
day. Lt. Butch Gamble
of the Fairfax County
Police Department told
CAIR the incident is
being treated as an
"apparent bias crime"
(Anyone with
information about the
attack is asked to, call
Fairfax County Police
at 703-691-2131 or
Crime Solvers at 703-
691-8888.)

"Unfortunately, we
are seeing a rise in
Islam phobic attacks
that parallels the
ongoing right-wing
campaign to demonize
Muslims and Islam,"
said CAIR Executive
Director Nihad Awad.
"This smear campaign
is having an impact on
those in our society
vulnerable to the siren
song of hatred and
prejudice. As we have
requested many times
in the past, elected
officials and other
opinion leaders must
speak out against this,
and all other forms of
religious intolerance."

Since the beginning
of the year, CAIR has
received a number of
reports of physical
assaults against
American Muslims (or
those perceived to be
Muslim) and Islamic
institutions. Those
incidents included a
recent arson attack on a
Georgia mosque, a
cross burning at a
Maryland Islamic
school, the kidnapping
and beating of a
Massachusetts pizza

delivery man whose
attackers thought he
was Muslim, and the
shooting of a Sikh man
in Arizona who may
have been mistaken for
an Arab. Similar
incidents have been
reported in a number of
other states.

Last month, CAIR
demanded that federal
terrorism charges be
brought against an
Illinois man who got
off with two years
probation and "anger
management" classes
after he bombed a
Muslim family's van.
In Florida, a man was
sentenced to just 12
years in prison for
plotting to attack some
50 Islamic institutions
in that state. CAIR,
America's largest
Islamic civil liberties
group, is headquartered
in Washington, D.C.,
and has 16 offices
nationwide and in
Canada.

flowers. These flowers
also became symbols of
virtues and of
categories of the elect;
for example, the red
rose for martyrs, and
the lily for virgins.

The rose as the
queen of flowers was
evidently a privileged
symbol for Mary,
Queen of Heaven and
Earth. The rose is a
symbol of Christ, too,

as we see in the
German Christmas
song from a poem by
Goethe, Es ist ein' Ros'
entsprungen.

The Marian
symbolism is well
illustrated by Dante in
his description of
paradise. His guide,
Beatrice, invites him to
contemplate among the
heavenly inhabitants
the beauty of Mary, the
Mother of God; "Why
are you so enamoured
of my face that you do
not turn your gaze to
the beautiful garden
which blossoms under
the radiance of Christ?
There is the Rose in
which the Divine Word
became flesh; here are
the lilies whose
perfume guides you in
the right ways",
(Paradiso, 23, 71 75).

But Dante uses
also a. more general
symbolism of the rose,
that of the universe
(Paradiso, 31, 1- 3),
like the lotus in Asia.

Indeed, with its
multiple petals the rose
is a beautiful image of
our expanding cosmos.

Wonderful examples
of this symbolism are
found in the gothic
cathedrals and their
rose windows, the
circular, stained-glass
windows that enhance
the three entrances of
these churches. These
immense roses
symbolize the world of
salvation offered and
revealed by God to our
lost human race
through the Old and
New Testaments.

Christ is at the
center of these rose
windows, where he
appears usually as
judge or in the mystery
of his incarnation. In
the latter example we
see Mary presenting the
Child Jesus. All around
are figures and scenes
of the Bible illustrating
the history of our
salvation. In this
artistic creation the

universal symbolism of
the rose found one of
its most -exalted
expressions.

The symbolism of
the rose assumed a
Marian association in a
privileged manner
through two themes:
the rose garden and the
devotion of the rosary.

During the Middle
Ages the theme of the
rose garden developed
from the symbolism of
the rose in the literature
of courtly love, using
the rose as the symbol
of the beloved lady.

Later the influence
of the Song of Songs
led to the rose
symbolizing the
mystical union between
Christ and, his Church,
or between God and
each member of his
people. Because Mary
was honored as the
model of our union
with God, the rose

MARYLAND / VIRGINIA

Sin City
continued from page 1

at Skin, the poolside
lounge at his family's
Palms Hotel & Casino,
Maloof smiles at the
debauchery unfolding
below.

Painted in green and
purle lights, a dozen
bikini-clad bombshells
from two of Las Vegas'
biggest strip clubs
frolic in the water.
Hundreds of young
partygoers sip
expensive cocktails and
dance as a DJ pumps
out the latest hip-hop
hits.

"Just another night in
Sin City," shrugs
Maloof, the 39-year-old
owner and operator of
the Palms. "The true
spirit of Las Vegas is in,
partying. Young people
don't want attractions.
They want to drink,
dance and have a good
time."

Under Maloof s
guidance, the Palms,
which opened in
November 2001 about
a quarter-mile west of
hte Las Vegas Strip, has
become a Pary Central
for young adults. The
Palms exudes sex, from
its Playboy-themed slot
machines to its
"playpen" bachelor
party suites. MTV used
the hotel to film a
season of the Real
World, a reality show

that chronicled the sins
of seven strangers.
Frequent visits by pop
stars and pro athletes
add to the cachet.

But sex appeal is
only part of the draw.
During the day the
Palms caters to a
different crowd:
retirees who come to
the casino for its slot
machines, generous
player perks and cheap
buffets. That simple
blend of sex and slots
ahs been a jackpot for
Maloof arid his family
who, with their
ownership of the Palms
and pro basketball's
Sacramento Kings;
stakes in Wells Fargo;
and a Coors
distributorship, are
worth at least $1
billion, according to
FORBES estimates.

Maloofs timing for
the Palms couldn't be
more perfect. Vegas is
in the midst of an
image makeover. In the
19990s casino
operators made a
concerted effort to sell
the city as a family
destination. Deeper-
pocketed competitors
like Steve Wynn and
Sheldon Adelson built
lavish theme resorts
anchored around
expensive attractions,
from ancient Egypt (the
Luxor) and
Renaissance Europe
(the Venetian) to big art
collections (the

Bellagio).

But sin never left the
desert. City marketers
have since abandoned
their efforts to portray
Vegas as a Disney on
Dice, and are once
again enticing visitors
with hedonistic
slogans, such as
"Vegas: What happens
here, stays here."

All of which plays
perfectly into Maloofs
hand. Though small by
Vegas-standards -- only
430 rooms, 7
restaurants, 3
nightclubs -- the Palms
is producing solid
returns.. Maloof
expects to earn $50
million in operating-
profit from the Palms
this year. Unlike its
highly leveraged

competitors on the
Strip, the Palms carries
very little deb on its
balance sheet,
generating a 20%
pretax return on
Maloofs $265 million
investment.

The Palms is just the
latest score by the
Maloof clan. It all
began in 1892, when
George's grandfather
Joseph Maloof opened
a grocery store in New
Mexico after
emigrating from
Lebanon. His father,
George Maloof Sr.,
steered the business
into wine and liquor
distribution, banking
and hotels. By the time
George Sr. died in
1980, he had become
one of New Mexico's
richest men.

MARYLAND

Samaha

became a privileged
symbol of the union
between Christ and
Mary. The Litany of
Loreto includes the
title, "Mystical Rose."

Mary holding a rose
(and not a scepter)
appears in the art of the
thirteenth century. The
theme of Mary in a rose
garden or under a rose
arbor or before a
tapestry of roses,
inspired many artists of
the Rhineland.

During the
Renaissance the rose
garden theme came to
represent human love
and lovers. But at the
same time the religious,
Marian symbolism of
the rose was
popularized by the
devotion of the rosary.

The structured
prayer form of 150 Hail
Marys was termed a
"rosary." This
expression came from
the Latin rosarium or
rosarius, a name given
to works collecting the
best of some teaching.

For example, Arnold of
Villanova wrote a
R o s a r i u s
Philosophorum,
explaining that it was a
compendium, a
thesaurus, a treasury of
philosophy. Here the
symbolism of the
rosary ended in abstract
use. In contrast, the
rosary stands as a
precious anthology of
spirituality.

Our Lady of the
Rosary is Our Lady of
the roses, because the
flowers are the symbols
of greeting offered to
the Mother of God. We
greet her with spiritual
flowers.

In a different
perspective, Mary and
the Child Jesus offer
the rosary to their
devotees. In his Feast
of the Rosary (1506),
Albrecht Durer
represents Jesus and
Mary handing out
crowns of roses.

materials), possesses a
number of artistic
portrayals of the rosary.
In some are a circle of
fifteen medallions
depicting the main
events of the lives of
Jesus and Mary, which
constitute the rosary
prayer. Each medallion
is separated from the
others by ten roses
representing the ten
Hail Marys that
accompany the
contemplation of each
mystery of the
Christian faith.

Another use of the
rose as a spiritual
symbol is emblematic.
The rose became a
moral emblem to
illustrate various
adages or maxims. For
example, "Life is a
rose. Its beauty fades
rapidly." or, "As the
rose blossoms under
the sun, I shall blossom
under the eyes of God."

In another emblem
the rose of our life
blossoms among the
thorns--pain, hard
work, wickedness,
disappointment. But
God brings good out of
our miseries.

The universal
symbolism of the rose
in Christian practice
may be summarized in
a brief prayer: May
God look with favor
upon our world, the
rose he created, that it
may more and more
expand its petals and so
glorify him, our Creator
and Father, in imitation
of the rose of Nazareth,
Mary, the servant of the
Lord.

Prayers, (Malfoozat,
Vo. 4, P. 336).

People wear new
clothes, new shoes, that
is new outfit altogether.
Women put on their
expensive ornaments to
decorate themselves.
With everything to put
on new, happiness of
the children knows no
bounds. Actually, to
wear new clothes, new
shoes, and perfume for
every member of the
family is insisted upon.
The father should have
enough spending
money to give every
member of the family
as 'Eidee' to let them
enjoy and spend at their
own sweet will.
People, then, have to
proceed to 'Eid-Gah'
that is a designated
open space, where Eid
Prayers, in
congregation, are to be
offered. After the
prayers, there is a scene

of hilarious and ecstatic
occasion, where among
the chanting the Praise
of Allah saluting one
another, people joyfully
shake hands and
embrace each other.
The women have
offered their prayers
separately under an
enclosed canopy, apart,
but close to men. The
same scene of
happiness is expected
there.

After the Eid prayer
are over, people return
to their homes, from
different direction.
This is a custom for
Muslims to display
their unity,
togetherness, all around
the area, displaying
their beautiful attire,
with the expression of
Praise of Almighty
Allah. People are
invited to each others
homes. Gifts are
exchanged. Meals are
shared. Even the
uninvited people are

since all of these fine
folks have been here, so
we want to do our best
to have them come
back again.
"Ok, go on, tell us
what your club has
planned........." Well
officer, the last time we
had a Mid-Winter in
Mobile was 1993...and
well, it snowed It has
never done that before,
you see. So far, we
haven't decided to have
it snow aglin; but we're
still working on it. And
we do have a lot of
other things planned for
our guests:
March 4 7, 2004
The dates to remember!
Oh THURSDAY,
March 4 there's going
to be a lot of activities
planned. Some unique
tours, youth activities,
games, indoor drive-in
movie, costume
selection, workout at
the Y, and encounters.
Later that evening, we
are going to be treated

to an elaborate Wine &
Cheese Reception at a
100-year-old Neo-
Classical Historic
Home. There will be
quite a bit of heavy
hors d' oeuvres, and
beverages. I
understand there will
also be a classical treat
for entertainment, if all
.goes as planned. From
there, the entourage
will return to the
Adams Mark Hotel for
the evening's hafli. I
understand that it will
be exceptional and
very special!
"I see, tell us what
happens next?" Ok, on
FRIDAY, March 5
there'll be a full day of
activities you know,
historic home tours,
visit places like 'the
world renown and

at the Y, more games,
costume selection for
the big Mardi Gras
event the next day just
to name a. few. We'll
probably have a few
meetings too....you
know, just to keep it
legal. But things will
really get interesting
later that evening,
though. We will go 1
block away to the
famous, and unique
1700's reconstructed
Fort Conde, for an
incredible Seafood
Extravaganza. We'll
havre a great variety
from the Gulf of
Mexico. This is a
really distinctive and
popular spot. There's a
buzz going around that
there'll also be some
'surprises' at the
fort....but nobody's
talking! After that, we
will go back to the
hotel for the Hafli. The
popular, and talented
band 'SAHAR' will

crank up the dabke
dancers to the max. We
also will have a 'late
nite' hospitality room
open for midnight
snacks.
"Get some sleep, you
say....Why's that?"
Well, it's your own
business, you know, but
SATURDAY, March 6
is going to be one heck
of a busy day for
everyone! yes, the
hospitality room will be
hummin' you know
the sittie's will have
been making all your
favorites! Don't forget
to pick up your
costume for the
evening's event. So
what's for lunch, you
ask? How about an
incredible Barbecue
feast at the beautiful
Cooper's Waterfront
Park.....directly across
the street from our
hotel, on the river.

been giving what we
can to charities and
scholarships.

This year, at our June
meeting, which was
held at a "Alborz",
representatives from
each of the local
charities chosen to
receive donations were
present to tell a little
about their organization
and how our money
helps. In years past, the
charity committee
members have gone to
these organizations and
toured the facility and
given the checks. This
year the committee,
consisting of Patsy
Sconci chair, Lisa
Nicholas and Meomi
Mecey, believed our
members would benefit
from hearing directly

from the organizations
we support.

By talking together,
both the organization
representatives and
club members learned
about each other, and
the mission of our
various organizations.

The charitable
organizations chosen
by our committee
include those who
assist the elderly,
provide hospice care
for all ages, feed the
poor, and provide
emergency shelter and
court advocates for
children. We believe by
supporting these
various agencies we are
able to touch more lives
throughout various
components of our
community.

the play Black Rabbit
opened in the Egyptian
capital three years ago,
the full house gave the
longest standing
ovation in 140 years to
veteran actress Amina
Rizq who, at the age of
91 made a comeback to
the stage after 25 years
absence.

In a career spanning 81
years, including over
500 stage plays, 250
films and countless
television dramas, Rizq
amassed a plethora of
national and
international awards
and became a member
of the Egyptian
parliament's upper'
house in 1991, where
she served until her
death.

Rizq played a

demanding central role
in Black Rabbit, a
psychological terror.
Rizq played a crippled,
cold-hearted,
domineering mother
who hardly leaves her
armchair. Employing
Pinteresque pauses and
powerful expressions,
frequently conveyed
via her large dark blue
eyes, Rizq mesmerized
the audience,
delivering the chilling
message of the play to
their hearts as
effectively in her 90s as
she had three decades
earlier.

Her talent was first
recognized in the silent
movies of the 1920s,
especially her sensual
portrait of Suad the
Gypsy in the 1928
classic Suad El
Ghagariyah.

Since her appearance in
Egypt's first talking
movie, the romantic
comedy The Aristocrats
in 1932, critics have
raved about Rizq's
ability to express a
maelstrom of human
emotions just by her
facial expressions.

Although during the
course of her career she
appeared in scores of
films and later
television dramas,
theatre remained her
life's passion following
her first stage
performance at the age
of 11.

Born to civil servant
Mohammed Rizq in
1910 in Tanta 80 miles
North of Cairo, the
young Rizq had
displayed a talent for
acting by the age of six.
Her role-model was her

aunt -- Amina
Mohammed -- who fell
in love with performing
arts after attending a
screening of the first
film to be shown in
Alexandria in 1896 and
went on to play a
number of minor roles
in theatre arind films.
Fostered by her Aunt
Amina when she was
orphaned in 1918, the
eight year old Rizq
moved to Cairo, then at
the centre of Egypt's
budding film industry
that had burst forth a
decade earlier with
documentaries. Six
decades later Cairo was
the fourth largest film
production centre in the
world.

The first stage role for
12 year old Rizq was

During the last 10 week

lonely time in hospital
reciting entire plays to
herself. Her fans are '
still debating which
part she was narrating
when her final curtain
call came as the sun
rose on Cairo on 24
August.

Latin America -- they
would perform a
repertoire of some 40
plays, including Greek
tragedies and
translations of classic
by Racine, Hugo,
Dostoevsky, Marlowe
and Shakespeare, one
each night, to the
Arabic speaking
diaspora. She would
move with amazing
ease -- often in the
same day, -- between
playing Ophelia and
Gertrude, from Juliet to
Lady Macbeth, or from
Electra to Helen of
Troy; always the
consummate
professional. She made
it a point to learn whole
plays by heart, not just
her own lines, and this
would be the case even
when she was playing a
number of roles during
the same period.

Egytian
Tourism
Bounces Back
The shock waves that
followed the attacks of 11
September 2001 spread far
beyond Ground Zero in
New York to change
political, economic and
social lives across the face
of the globe. The fact that
the attacks on the Twin
Towers of the World Trade
Centre and the Pentagon in
Washington were launched
via commercial aircraft did
nothing to help the
fortunes of the world
aviation industry, already
under considerable
economic pressure.
The terrorists have not
laid down their arms but, as
is the human condition, we
are learning to live with the
threat. Slowly, confidence
has returned and it seems
clear the world travel
industry has turned a
corner.
In the wake of 11
September, economists at
Egypt's Institute of
National Planning (INP)
released a report: The
Consequences of the 11
September Terrorist
Attacks Against America
on the Egyptian Economy,
which painted a gloomy
picture. One of the hardest
hit economic sectors, the
report predicted, would be
tourism, which accounts
for almost a. quarter of
Egypt's foreign exchange

receipts. The INP
expected the attacks on the
United States would cause
a decline in tourist
revenues of over 70%, or
approximately $2.7bn (out
of a total revenue of
$4.3bn).
However, what the INP
economists failed to take
into consideration was that
while the effects of the
terrorist attacks on the US
would reduce the number
of westerners prepared to
travel to the Middle East,
the number of Arabs
wanting to visit western
destinations would also
register a sharp decline.
By the end of 2002,
Egypt's Minister for
Tourism Mahmound El
Beltagui said that while
tourism receipts had
declined overall by around
$900m during the 12
month period. (September
2001 September 2002),
the latter months under
review had recorded an
upturn. Ministry figures
show, for example, that
during August last year
tourist traffic into Egypt
was up 15%, compared
with 2001. The major
reason, El Beltagui
confirmed, is that Egypt
successfully managed to
attract a greater number of
Arab tourists, who had
been scared off
destinations in Europe and
the US.Today, travellers
from Arab states and the
West are returning to the
land of the pharaohs with

enthusiasm. As the
gateway to one of the
world's fastest growing
tourism markets, and with
200,000 hotel rooms
planned over the next 15
years, Egypt is in the
process of realizing one of
the world's largest tourism
development plans.
"Egypt will always be high
on the li-st of places people
want to visit", a leading
London-based travel
company official
explained. "It has history,
atmosphere and culture. If
you have never witnessed
the timeless spectacles of
sunrise over Giza plain or a
felucca gracefully
navigating the waters of
the Nile, just as they have
for centuries, then you
have much to look forward
to." Sentiments clearly
shared by the unknown
author of a comment,
which appears in the
ancient tales of the 1001
Nights; 'He who hath not
seen Cairo, hath not seen
the world.'
From the latter part of
the ninth century, a
succession of Arab rulers
made their mark on the
city; Ibn Talun built his
royal-city, El Qatai. Later,
the Fatimids built the
walled city of El Qahira,

from which Cairo takes its
name. In the 13th century,
a tribe of Turkish
soldier/salves rose to
power, followed by the
Ottomans, the French
under Napoleon and finally
the British.
It would be difficult,
although not impossible, to
do justice to the many
attractions Egypt has to
offer in a single visit. 'Most
travellers tend to
concentrate on either the
cities or the fabulous new
coastal resorts of Hurghada
and Sharm El Sheikh.
Cairo, unquestionably
on of the largest, most
fascinating and
cosmopolitan cities in the
world, offers a wealth of
monuments and centuries
of civilization, including
pharaonic dynasties,
Roman, Christian, and
Islamic landmarks.
Situated on the West
Bank of the river Nile is
the most important and
frequently visited sight of
Egypt -- the plain of Giza,
home to the three great
pyramids and the sphinx.
For those visiting the
Egyptian capital this is an
experience not to be
missed.

Upper Egypt has

Luxor encapsulates the
greatness and majesty, of
the ancient Egyptians, a
civilization that dates back
7,000 years. The entire
area is crammed with 'once

the Nile, in the City of the

Temples of Luxor and
Karnmak. On the west bank
of the river is the City of
the Dead, the wonders of
the Valley of the Kings
with its ancient tombs and
monuments. In Luxor,
Egypt's 5,0.00 years of
history are apparent
everywhere. Testaments to
desire for immortality, built
for eternity in sandstone
and granite, the temples,
tombs and palaces stand
still, surrounded by souqs
and luxury hotels.

Some 80 miles or so up
the Nile, Aswan, Egypt's
sunniest southern city has a
distinctly African
atmosphere. Small enough
to walk around, the pace of
life is slow and relaxing.
Here, the Nile is at its most
beautiful, flowing through
amber desert and granite
rocks, around emerald
inlands covered in palm

Explore the souq, full of
the scent and color of local
herbs and spices, perfumes

Elephantine Island with its
timeless artifacts dating
from pre-Dynastic times

been coming to Aswan for
many years to experience
the tranquility and the
magic is still very much
apparent today.
