Sometimes the flip of a
switch can affect a
person's life forever. Such
a situation occurred
nearly 30 years ago, when
Howard Jones came home
from the office and turned
on his TV set.
"My wife and I were
watching a television
show that featured Danny
Thomas talking about
St. Jude. It was one of
his original promotions
where he performed to
solicit donors for the
hospital," Jones recalls."
We were so touched by
the program that it
brought tears to my wife's
eyes."
That interlude in front
of the television
transformed the Joneses'
lives; their subsequent
donations of time and
money in turn have
affected countless
children suffering from
catastrophic diseases.
"We have been sold on the
hospital since that first
encounter and have
continued to be
supporters through the

years," says Jones, a real
estate investor who lives
in Santa Ana, California.
He later met the
entertainer when Los
Angeles County honored
Thomas for his

From the Book of Luke
As it is written in the
book of the words of
Esaias the prophet,
saying, The voice of one
crying in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of
the Lord, make his paths
straight. Every valley
shall be filled, and
every mountain and hill
shall be brought low;
and the crooked shall be
,made straight, and the
rough ways shall be
made smooth; And all
flesh shall see the
salvation of God.
John answered,
saying unto them all, I
indeed baptize you with
water; but one mightier
than I cometh, the
latchet of whose shoes I
am not worthy to
unloose: he shall
baptize you with the
Holy Ghost and with
fire: Whose fan is in his
hand, and 'he will
thoroughly purge his
floor, and will gather-.

Now when all the
people were baptized, it
came to pass, that Jesus
also. being baptized, and
praying, the heaven was
opened, And the Holy
Ghost descended in a
bodily shape like a dove
upon him, and -.a voice
came from heaven,
which said, Thou art my
beloved Son; in thee I
am well pleased.
And devils also came:
out of many, crying out,
and saying, Thou art
Christ the Son of. God,

The recent
canonization of Saint
Juan Diego elicited
worldwide enthusiasm
for the recognition of
another Christlike lay
person. This latest saint
of Mexico was the
Virgin Mother Mary's-
chosen messenger of
evangelization in the
nascent Church of the
16th century New
World. He is an
illustrious example of a
Christian in action.
The contemporary
significance of the
canonization and the
occurence at Guadalupe
is multifacted. But the
implication for the new
evangelization -in our
day is overwhelming.
The honor bestowed on
Saint Juan Diego
extends the clarion call
addressed to all
Christians to respond

The Arabic word
'Haun' or .'Hudna' is
translated in English as
'Meekness'.
The Arabic word
means not to inflict any
injury or pain on any
one else. This also
results in a peaceful life
for an individual. And
as such, helps to
'establish peace on
earth'. The injunctions
in the Holy Quran are:
"Surely all Believers
are brothers. So make
'peace' between your
brothers.
And fear Allah that
Mercy may be shown to
you." (49:11)
The Verse of the Holy
Quran 49:11, lays
special stress on Muslim
brotherhood. Islam
tolerates no discord or
dissention between
brothers. If there

strength lies in this. ideal
of 'brotherhood' which

Greryhound Profiles Muslim
Bus Passenger
Traveller Denied Right to Sit in Front
Seats

WASHINGTON, D.C.,
7/11/02 -CAIR is
demanding that
Greyhound Lines Inc.
apologize to a Muslim
passenger from New
York who was kicked off
a bus in Washington,
D.C., apparently because
ofhis faith and ethnicity.
The 29-year-old
traveler, an American
citizen of Middle Eastern
decent, told CAIR the
incident occurred June
29th during a stopover in
the nation's capital, on a
trip from New York City
to Richmond, Va.
According to .the
Muslim passenger, he

moved to the front of the
bus during the stopover
because his seat in the
back was too cold due to
the location of the air
conditioner. The driver
said he could not sit in
the empty front seats.
When he tried to re-board
the bus after passengers
were taken off because of
a "problem with the bus,"
he was prevented from
boarding by Greyhound
personnel who said the
other passengers did not
want to travel with him.
He says Greyhound
employees treated him
like an "animal."

Yemenis Resist US Pressure

Despite considerable
public opposition to a
US Military presence,
30 troops from the US
Special Forces have
arrived in Yemen to
train local soldiers.
However, since their
arrival, increasing
internal resistance has
made observers wonder
if the American
presence will hinder
rather than help the
Yemeni government's
cause.
In late Spring, a new
terrorist group emerged
that targeted not US
interests but the Yemeni
government. The Al
Qaeda Sympathizers
(AQS) carried out
around half a dozen
bombing raids in Sana'a
and Aden demanding
the release of 173
detainees, allegedly
linked to the Al Qaeda

But with the detainees

"traitors' they accuse of

According to the

Because of his prior

commitment to the kids at
St. Jude," Jones says.
"When he came to receive
his award, he even
brought a pair of shoes
with him that represented
the children who had

Each visit to St. Jude
reminds Jones of that
special day, because the
plaque awarded to

imprinted on the plaque
have special meaning to
Jones because he wrote
them.
Some people might not
understand why a person
who lives in California

would support a hospital
in Memphis, but Jones
understands that St. Jude
research findings help
children everywhere. That
is one reason he has
embraced the hospital as
one of his most important

This is yet another in a

Executive Director Nihad

Awad added that
fingerprinting tens of
thousands of law-abiding

contemplate violence are
unlikely to register. He also
said it is counterproductive
because resentment caused
by such discriminatory

Saint Juan Diego
(continued from page 3)
salvation needs the
cooperation of us all. In
the Guadulupe event
God chose to give the
miraculous image of
Mary, his Mother and
ours, to a humble,
lonely widower. The
engaging, simple story
of Our Lady giving her
picture to Juan Diego
touches hearts and
disposes them for the
grace of baptism. This is
a special chapter in the
evangelization of the
world.
Today we find
stirring of new interest
in the unchurched, the
alienated, and the
disenchanted. Faster
travel and easier global
communication portend
a new fullness of time in
spreading the gospel.
Since the beginning
God has depended on
his creatures to fulfill
his plan. Today there is

Meekness
(continued from page 3)
The enforcement of the
Muslim Brotherhood is
the greater social ideal of
Islam. On it was based the
Holy Prophet of Islam'
Sermon at his last
Pilgrimage. And Islam
cannot be completely

a desire for unity among
Christians. The work of
theHoly Spirit is uniting
them in prayer, love,
and works of charity. In
the past century Pope
Pius XI and Pope Pius
XII began to re-
empha.size the
importance of th.e role
of the ,laity. Long
before Pope John XXIII
convened the -Second
Vatican Council to
renew all in Christ, the
lay apostolate was a
point of emphasis and
concern. One of the
sixteen documents of
Vatican II is the Decree
on the Laity
(Apostolicam
Actuositatem, 1965),
and the role of the laity
is treated in several of
the other documents.
Some years later. Pope
Paul VI sounded a
prophetic call to
evangelization with the
apostolic exhortation
On Evangelization in
the ModernWorld

(Evangelii Nuntiandi,
1975). Our present
pontiff John Paul II, has
preached a new
evangelization and
following a Synod of
Bishops issued an
apostolic exhortation on
The Lay Members of
Christ's Faithful People
(Christifideles Laici,
1989). The Handmaid of
the Lord, the Spouse of
the Holy Spirit, who
first brought forth the
Savior for us, plays her
part in bringing his
Good News to all.. The
19th century apostle of
Mary, Blessed William
Joseph Chaminade, is
among the strongest
voices still reminding us
of our baptismal
obligation to participate
in the apostolic mission
of Mary to complete the
Whole Christ. Like Juan
Diego, all the faithful
are called to spread the.
fragrance of the roses of
Tepeyac wherever we
are, whatever we do.

"Thy kingdom come, the
daily petition of the Our
Father, has always
needed for its
fulfillment the work and
collaboration of the
laity.
To all Christians is
given the commission to
make Christ and his
teaching known, loved,
and lived. "The Spirit
breathes where he wills"
(In 3:8) and the people
of God have always had
the charisms .to help
spread God's kingdom
on earth. Our times need
strong and dedicated
Christian lay persons
more than ever before.
All fields of human
progress are directed by
the laity. Competence in
the social, commercial,
and political spheres is
in the hands of the laity.
Only they can bring the
spirit of the gospel into
these arenas.. In the
words of Paul VI, lay
persons are "the bridge
to the modern world."

realized until this ideal is
achieved. Again,
"The conferences of
such as enjoin charity,
goodness, or the 'making
of peace among
mankind"'.

Quran, 4:115, points out.

their usual Sunday
evening outing, stopped
by their polling stations to
cast their votes.
In the small village of
Ghdhaouinia, population
500, registered voters,
223, I asked several
people why they thought
it was important to take
- part in the referendum. "It
is my duty in a
democracy," said
Hamouda Jebali who
described himself as a
worker. "The reforms will
bring better services to
our community and make
us more politically
aware," he continued. "A
lot has been achieved,
especially the Solidarity
Fund and micro credits to
farmers like us but we
expect more in the future.

These reforms will allow
us to demand more from
our representatives in
government."
How did he view the
fact that the amendments
will allow President Ben
Ali to stand for another
term of office? ".I fully
agree. He has done a great
deal for Tunisia and
especially for us, the poor.
His work is not yet
finished. Ifhe stands, we
will all vote for him."
These sentiments were
broadly echoed in the
more affluent sectors of
Tunis. Here the voters
drove up in their cars and
often came in family
groups. The gender
breakdown, at least at this
station and for the hour or
so I spent there, was
roughly 60% women,
40% men. The majority
were professionals -

a professional artist.
What did the
referendum mean to the
ordinary person I asked.-
"It is very important,"
replied Mariam Younous,
a software designer. "The
constitutional reform is a
critical step in the
political and social
development of Tunisia.
Some 39 of the 78 clauses
in the document are being
amended. We have the
right to have a say in such
a major development and
we are exercising it."
Lassoued Bechir, an
engineer, was equally
clear what he was voting
for. "Tunisia at heart is a
conservative society. We
do not like change for the
sake of change or to
satisfy the expectations of
foreigners. They have
their societies and do
what is right for them; we

have ours and do what is
right for us.
"These reforms take us
to the next step in our
political development.
Human rights have now
been written into the
constitution and a legal
reform is on the way.
More &eedom for the
people is balanced by a
constitutional demand for
greater civil
responsibilities. The
emphasis on plural
politics is balanced by
abolishing the limitations
on presidential terms and
the institution of a second
cham- ber. In shon, the
reforms will allow
Tunisian society to evolve
and change with the times
without sacrificing
stability. And that sums up
Tunisians for you -we
want to go as fast as
possible but as carefully
as possible."

Farhat, a student added
that since 'The Change'

more than in Europe.

said, "we have equality in

exercise choice if you

first fundamental of
democracy, in my
opinion, is to ensure
security, stability and
prosperity for the people.
Then when the people

informed position, aware
that if they vote in the

the right people, they will

staggering by western
standards where a 40%

healthy. But in a
developing world context
neither the turnout nor the
size of the affirmation is
particularly unusual. The
often-cynical attitude to
elections in the West has
not yet crossed over to the
developing world where
the power of the vote is
taken very seriously.
Nevertheless, the result
took no one by surprise -
although some 16 and a

voted against the
amendments indicating
the existence of a nucleus
of opposition to the Ben

certainly underscore the
role of writing, and by
extension language and
indeed calligraphy, in
Islamic culture. It was
realized that communal
memory through the rich
oral tradition could not be
totally entrusted with the

sacred task of relaying the
details of the divine
revelations. Since Mecca
was a commercial centre,
where writing was in
common use, it is
probable that many of the
revelations were written
down in Mohammed's
lifetime. It seems that his
secretaries in Medina
wrote down some of
them, yet still, the Koran
was not compiled into a
single book. By the late
16th centuty, the arts of
the book had reached
unprecedented heights of
refinement and splendour,
with illumination taking
an equal position with
calligraphy. This
flowering, especially in
Persia, was the inspira-
tion for the arts of the
book in the Mughal and
Ottoman empires.
The introduction of
moveable type in Europe
in the mid 15th century
brought about the
democratisation of the
book there, as books
became cheaper and more
accessible. But in Islamic

medium of Islamic art,
ensured that it would be
centuries before printed
books would be
acceptable in the Muslim
world, although
interestingly, block

printing had traditionally
been used there on textiles
and leather.
Although Arabic
calligraphic designs may
seem to the uninitiated
like an abstract carpet or,
in the later Ottoman
evolution, a flurry of
extravagant loops, they do

in fact follow an inspired
system, a symbolic
interpretation of the order
of the universe, in which
the factor of change
inevitably repeats its
cycles. Continuity of life
is represented by
meandering lines; eter-
nity by the circle; birth

and, maturity by rosettes
and palmettes. For the
goal of this unique art of
literacy is to achieve a
perfect bal- ance between
beauty and meaning,
decoration and
spirituality.

Kentucky Derby. War
Emblem also won the
Preakness before
stumbling in the Belmont
and finishing eighth,
failing to become the first
Triple Crown winner
since Affirmed ill 1978.
The U.S.-educated
Ahmed spent $900,000 to
buy War Emblem just
three weeks before the
Kentucky Derby, after the
horse won the Illinois
Derby. "I think this is one
of the best investments I
ever made in my life,

besides buying oil in
Arabia," Ahmed said after
War Emblem won the
Preakness.
Point Given, though,
was perhaps his finest
horse, winning the 200 1
Preakness and Belmont
and being named horse of
the year. Point Given had
finished fifth in the
Kentucky Derby.
"I'm shocked and
saddened," said jockey
Gary Stevens, who rode
Point Given to victories in
the Preakness and
Belmont stakes in 2001,
which were The
Thoroughbred Carp.'s

first Triple Crown wins.
"We were very close
friends outside of racing."
The colt was
unexpectedly retired last
August after he strained a
tendon in his left foreleg.
Point Given earned
$3,968,500, with nine
victories in 13 career
starts.
Point Given's success
helped The Thoroughbred,
Carp. rank second in
North America last year
with earnings of
$8,000,763, with 66
victories from 367
starters.

of military forces in key
areas and-in a country
notorious for the private

weaponry-takes steps
to restrict the sale of
materials needed for the
manufacture of
explosives.
Although the Yemeni
government is pushing
hard to wipe out
terrorists, some fear it is
almost cause and say that
the AQS is just a first of
several terrorist groups
that will soon emerge.
According to the Sultan
Al Barakani, chairman
of the General People's
Congress, the ruling
party headed by
President Ali Abdullah,
anger is boiling up
among Arabs about the
conflict between the

Israelis and the
Palestinians. There is a
very real danger that the
feelings of impotence
and rage may spill over
and produce more
terrorists. "We, have
caught many of those
involved directly or
indirectly with the Al
Qaeda Sympathizers but
it may already be out of
control" says Al-
Barakani. "The Arab
people are fed up and
will start creating new
groups. As long as the
conflict continues,
terrorism will go on.
The continuing
conflict between the
Israelis and the
Palestinians has put the
president in a precarious
position. "Saleh is
facing an enormous
obstacle," explained one
foreign diplomat.
"Publicity he has to

support the Palestinians
but politically he must
show support for the
United States. Because
of its support for Israel,
the people are against
America. It's a very
tricky balancing act.
We want the

administration to stop
working with the United
States because this is
what Washington wants
from us," says Saeed
Thabet, spokesman for
the Islamist party, Islah.

According to Al
Barkani, the ruling party
has so far overruled the
demands of opposition
parties and has toed the
US line by continuing
with its rooting out of
-terrorist elements in the
country.
President Saleh's
attempt to persuade
tribal leaders to
cooperate on the war on
terror and prevent

been critical. Sheikh
Abdul Karim Bin Ali
Murshed, the president

the tribal leaders
regularly, claims that
most of the leaders have

shown h commitment to
the government. Others
disagree. "Support from
the tribes is already
receding," says Thabet.
"This is partially due to
the plight of the
Palestinians, but the
main reason is that
terrorism is not a
priority in Yemen. The
biggest concern here is

underdevelopment, a
weak educational
system, and no

would drop their guns if
they had good schools,
jobs, and a higher
standard of living."
Along with rampant
poverty and
unemployment, over
60% of the Yemeni
population continue to

electricity in their
homes. Yemen is the

"Our view is that
there are a large number
of people in any
particular country that
do not have the prospect
of a better life which

"The poverty reduction

diplomatic source put it,
"With Arab outrage and
hatred towards America

limited prospects to

frustrations are going to
