By Rachel Christian Staff Writer ree statewide recounts are going on right now across Florida and thats never happened before. Employees at the Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office have been busy since Saturday prepping ballots for a machine recount taking place later this week. Its been a long weekend, Kari Ewalt, public relations o cer for Osceola County SOE, said Tuesday morning. Recounts were o cially triggered Saturday after authorities determined that numbers submitted by all 67 counties le races for Senate, governor and agriculture commissioner were too close to call. What are provisional ballots and why was everyone talking about them? Nov. 8 was the last day for provisional ballots to get counted. Ewalt said the Supervisor of Elections office received numerous calls and visits from concerened residents. But according to Ewalt, provisional ballots are pretty rare, at least in Osceola County, and are normally given to people who dont have identification with them on Election Day. Voting with a provisional ballot allows that person cast to vote, and gives the Supervisor of Elections Office a couple days to Informing readers. Helping build a stronger community. 50 CENTS WWW.AROUNDOSCEOLA.COM Thursday, November 15, 2018 LOG ONFollow us at https:// www.facebook.com/ osceolanewsgazette FOLLOWFollow us @ AroundOsceola By Rachel Christian Staff Writer A fundraiser sponsored by a downtown Kissimmee merchant this Saturday is set to feature a sweet mix of cupcakes, kids and creativity. And for the icing on top, all proceeds from the special Kids Cupcake Competition will bene t a nonpro t campaign aimed at ending childhood hunger in America. e competition is a fun chance for young bakers to show o their skills to a panel of judges while earning bragging rights and cooking gear along the way. Its a great way for kids to help kids, said Leia Perez, owner of custom cake shop Candyland Designs on Broadway in Kissimmee. Its also something fun for people in the community to check out and participate in. Perez is the accountant-turnedentrepreneur cake artist who opened Candyland Designs with her husband earlier this year. The true momand-pop shop hosted a week-long summer bake camp for young adults since opening, along with weekend classes to spark interest in aspiring pastry chefs. As a self-taught cake artist, Perez said she wants to encourage a love of baking and decorating in others, regardless of age. A few months ago, Perez had an idea to combine a few of her biggest passions baking, teaching others and giving back into a single event into this weekends Kids Cupcake Competition. I just thought, Wouldnt it be great for these kids to use their skills and do something amazing with it for their peers, Perez said. It will give them experience at an early age of giving back to others, a habit they hopefully keep as they get older and become adults. The young participants will bake 100 to 120 mini-cupcakes prior to the event and bring them to the community center Saturday What is going on with recounts in Osceola County? The numbers alone are staggering, yet diabetes continues to be misunderstood and often disregarded. This November, in recognition of American Diabetes Month, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) aims to create urgency about diabetes, help educate others, break down stereotypes, and to correct myths and misunderstandings surrounding the disease. For those who have been diagnosed, diabetes impacts nearly every decision they make dailyfrom what theyll eat, wear, and do to how theyll take care of themselves and their loved ones. e ADA is looking to share stories about what it truly means to live with diabetes through its new campaign: Everyday Reality. As part of this years campaign, actor Winston Duke, best known for his role as MBaku in Marvels Black Panther, has joined the ADA to help spark a national dialogue about diabetes awareness and prevention. Duke has seen the painful mark diabetes can leave on families firsthand and is doing everything in his power to change his familys future story and the story of millions more. Diabetes carries a social burden, as too many Americans wrongfully assume the disease is the result of poor choices, said Tracey D. Brown, CEO of the American Diabetes Association. We must work to bend the curve and change peoples mindsets about diabetes, which will, in turn, help them change behaviors to better manage the disease and reduce the risk of complications and increased diagnosis. The only choice we have as a nation is to support people with diabetes and help them not only manage it but also thrive with it while we work towards a cure. This years campaign highlights the personal stories of people impacted by diabetes, which will be shared throughout the month via diabetes.org/ everydayreality and via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: Tracey D. Brown, based in Virginia, ADAs CEO who was diagnosed with gestational diabetes 14 years ago, and then later with type 2 diabetes. Mary Xu, a mother from Washington, D.C., who was diagnosed with gestational diabetes for her rst two pregnancies, and now with her third pregnancy is preparing for the same diagnosis. Hunter Sego, a college athlete from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 7 years old and is now navigating diabetes while living away from home and his family. Mike and Olivia Nelson, a father, age 40, and a daughter, age 4, from Salt Lake City, Utah, who both live with type 1 diabetes. American Diabetes Month posters, social media messages and graphics are available to share with the public at diabetes.org/ everydayreality. While the everyday reality of diabetes can seem overwhelming, there are things everyone can do to improve the lives for people with diabetes and those at risk. Everyone can encourage people to know their risk by taking the ADAs Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test, become an advocate, magnify the voices of all those living with diabetes and support the organizations mission by donating today. Join the conversation, share and engage with stories on social media as the ADA highlights the personal accounts and #EverydayReality of those living with this chronic disease. The ADA is pleased to welcome two national sponsors for American Diabetes Month: National Oral Care Strategic Partner Colgate Total and CVS Pharmacy. Were proud to be partnering with the ADA for the tenth consecutive year, said Bill Van de Graaf, Vice President and General Manager for Oral Care North America at Colgate. Through our partnership, we hope to help raise awareness about the link between diabetes and oral health during American Diabetes Month. The everyday reality is that people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop gum disease. Colgate Total is the only toothpaste approved by the FDAs NDA process and American Dental Association-accepted to help prevent gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease. Its an easy choice people can make to improve the reality of life every day.Discover the #EverydayReality during National Diabetes Month in NovemberCUPCAKESContinued from Page 1 aernoon. e bakers will have time to decorate their creations before sending their treats to the judges table. To increase community participation, anyone who purchases admission to Saturdays event also gets to serve as a judge, with their ticket doubling as a vote cast for their favorite young baker. Each participating baker is evaluated on taste, decoration and presentation, with prizes awarded for first, second and third place. Prize packages are valued at $1,000 and include winnings such as bowling and Crayola Experience tickets. All participants will go home with a basket of baking goods sponsored by companies like Betty Crocker. Six bakers are already registered, but Perez said shed like to get three or four more youngsters between the ages of 7 and 13 signed up before Saturday. Registration is $50 a child, but there is still a free sponsorship spot available thanks to Kissimmee Main Street, who worked with local merchants to waive registration fees for four kids. All proceeds from ticket sales and registration will benefit No Kid Hungry, a national fundraising campaign that encourages people to host bake sales that raise money and awareness for childhood hunger. Locally, No Kid Hungry donates to groups that provide students with breakfast, aer school and summer meals. The Kids Cupcake Competition takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church Community Center at 101 Dakin St. To register or purchase tickets for the competition, visit www. candylanddesignsco.com and click on Events. Page 4 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Thursday, November 15, 2018 INSIDERSTips and Advice from Local Professionals WATER AUTHORITY THEInsidersTips & Advice From Local Professionals Believe it or not, toilets have their day on the calendar as well. November 19 is World Toilet Day. Why would such a mundane appliance have a day dedicated to it every year? Without toilets and sanitation systems our health, water resources, and environment would be signicantly impacted in a negative way. roughout history and sadly today many diseases, illnesses, and deaths are caused due to lack of toilets and sanitary systems. An unfathomable fact is that more people in the world have phones than toilets. Even in our recent history, 25% of US homes still lacked indoor toilets and in some Southern states that number topped 50% in 1950. Government legislation, health and environmental laws were enacted to improve our public health standards. Today, many of us in the western world dont give toilets a second thought and take them for granted. New technologies and methods strive to improve our sanitary systems to make them more ecient. Toilets which account for about 30 percent of the homes indoor water use also continue to evolve. Prior to the 1990s toilets could use up to 6 gallons per ush. In the early 90s, federal law mandated that all toilets manufactured and installed had to have a 1.6 gallon ush. Now you can get toilets that have a 1.28 gallon ush. If you live in a home built before 1992, you may have old toilets using up to six gallons per ush. Changing them to 1.28 gallons per ush toilets would reduce your toilet water use up to almost 80%. When shopping for a toilet look for those labeled WaterSense. Toilets improve public health, but they need care too. Over time toilets can start leaking. A leaking toilet can waste 1,000 gallons a day. It is usually the toilet apper. A quick way to test is to place a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within 15 minutes without ushing, you have a leak. Flush the toilet aer this test to avoid staining the tank. Toilet appers are easy and cheap to replace. Yes, toilets and sanitary systems play a vital role in our daily lives ensuring healthy living and protecting our natural resources. By maintaining our toilets and upgrading our old toilets we too create a positive impact. Toho Water Authority will denitely be celebrating this day. We will be on social media bringing awareness about the importance of toilets and sanitary systems. Regrettably, there are billions of people around the world living without toilets and sanitary systems. We hope you will join us in this worldwide campaign. Just over 160 provisional ballots were cast in Osceola County this year, according to Ewalt and more than 100 were confirmed and counted shortly after Election Day. I think the provisional ballots confused a lot of people this year, Ewalt said. Voting by mail isnt the same, and everyone who votes a provisional ballot gets paperwork that lets them know what they need to do to get their vote counted and where to call if they have any questions. That deadline passed 5 p.m. on Nov. 8, and by Saturday, statewide machine recounts were ordered. Now what happens? Aer today, any race that remains within a margin of 0.25 percent or less will have another three days until Sunday to conduct a hand recount. By Monday, Floridians hopefully will know who their official Senator, governor and agriculture commissioner are. ats assuming nothing unexpected happens, Ewalt said. Its hard to say if thats a possibility because this many huge recounts has never happened before. Current Florida recount laws were put into place aer the 2000 presidential election. The new rules created an insanely short timeframe to conduct recounts, Ewalt said, though she added the Supervisor of Elections Oce is up for the challenge. Were working hard because we really do want every ballot counted, she said. Higher voter turnout more ballots to count There is an upside to the recount process. More residents cast ballots in Osceola County this year then any midterm election in over two decades. Voter turnout was huge, hitting 53 percent, which was up from 41 percent four years ago. Were always happy to see people get out and vote, Ewalt said. Even if we do need to recount their votes. A recount timeline Tuesday, Nov. 6: Election Day Thursday, Nov. 8, 5 p.m.: Deadline for provisional ballots to get counted. Saturday, Nov. 10: Three Florida state races (U.S. Senate, governor and commissioner of agriculture) are deemed too close to call and recounts are ordered. ursday, Nov. 15, 3 p.m.: When Supervisor of Elections across Florida must submit machine recount tallies to the state. Any races still within a margin of 0.25 percent or less will go to a manual recount. Sunday, Nov. 18: When hand recounts are due from all Supervisor of Elections oces. Schaffer wins circuit court judge race By C harlie R eed For the News-Gazette In the local race for Ninth Circuit Court Judge, Laura Schaer, a juvenile defense attorney and a former supervising attorney for the Department of Children and Families, beat Dean Mosley, a criminal defense attorney in private practice who has also worked civil, municipal finance and personal injury cases. Schaffer took 63.59 percent of the 101,670 votes cast in that nonpartisan election for circuit judge. There were also 10 elections for positions on nonpartisan community development and facilities districts, which are boards that govern certain aspects of planned residential communities including Brighton Lakes, Celebration, Harmony, Indian Point and Remington. More than 15,000 votes were cast in those elections, excluding the seat for Harmony Community Development District Seat 2. Results for that three-way race had still not reported by the Supervisor of Elections as of ursday. Also, State Rep. Josie Tomkow held on to the Florida House District 39 seat against Democratic challenger Ricky Shirah for the second time this year.

Page 6 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Thursday, November 15, 2018 VETERANContinued from Page 1 headed to Norfolk to pick up new crew, including McCartney, and to prepare for convoy duty across the Atlantic Ocean. The ship departed for Belfast, Ireland, providing protective coverage for ships carrying equipment and supplies for Operation Overlord the Allied invasion of Normandy. McCartney was a gunners mate in the 3rd Division on the Nevada. I remember it all, he said about being part of the historic D-Day invasion. The gunners provided cover for the guys on shore and took out the German targets. I loaded the guns, put the ammunition in the 14 guns; I loaded the powder for them. We just got started ring, he said. Following Normandy, McCartney went on to serve in South France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At Okinawa, the ship was hit by an enemy aircra and 11 men were killed, but the crew continued to provide coverage for the ground troops. In a book about the USS Nevada, McCartney pointed out a photo of him and his fellow crewmen celebrating the end of the war. at was a happy time, he said. Aer he returned home in February 1946, one of his first priorities was to find his girl, Mary. They had known each other in school, but McCartney said Mary didnt like him so much then. He always remembered her though. I got to thinking: I kind of liked the Navy, but if I stay in the Navy, somebody might get her, and I might want her, McCartney said. He returned home to Pennsylvania and they went to a movie and got married in May. It was a long engagement, he said with a laugh. The McCartneys have been married for 72 years and have four children. Aer the war, McCartney went back working in construction, which he had done before the war. The family moved to St. Cloud in 1968, where Bud and Mary still live. For his service in World War II, McCartney received the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two stars and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with three stars. Napoleon Bonaparte established the French Legion of Honor in 1802, and it is Frances highest distinction, recognizing exceptional service to France in various elds. On the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings, France decided to grant the Legion of Honor to all the U.S. veterans who fought on French soil, many of whom gave their lives in the name of freedom. To receive the medal, veterans must have fought in one of the four main campaigns of the Liberation of France: Normandy, Provence, Ardennes, or Northern France. Thursday, November 15, 2018 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Page 7 By Ken Jackson Sports Editor It wasnt supposed to end like this. e Osceola Kowboys football playo run ended, not long a er it started, with a 28-17 loss to Bradenton Manatee Friday at Henry Ramsey Field. The Kowboys, who beat the Hurricanes, 44-16, in the rst round last year, played from behind the entire night in the Region 8A-2 quarter nal. I knew it was a tough matchup for us when I rst saw it, OHS Coach Doug Nichols said. Yeah, we beat them last year but it was a tough game going into hal ime and they had a lot of guys back who got a good look at us last year. Its the second rst-round exit from the playo s in three years for a team thats been in the playo s annually since 2007 and been to the state championship game three times in that span. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes (7-4) will travel to Sarasota Riverview, a 41-22 winner over Treasure Coast in next weeks regional semi nal. While Osceola (9-2) possessed and moved the ball seemingly at will, it couldnt break into the end zone from the red zone, or take advantage of three forced turnovers. On the ip side, Manatee used a handful of big plays to score or set up scores when they did get the ball. When you get turnovers and cant score o of them ... thats our speech every Thursday, Osceola Coach Doug Nichols said. If you get three of them you should win the game. We just didnt take advantages of opportunities we got and hurt ourselves with penalties. Yes, those penalties hurt, to the tune of 13 calls for 110 yards; Osceola had two touchdown runs called back for ags a er their rst drive of the night was extended when Manatee muffed a punt return. Manatee fired off its first big play when Irone Jackson got just open enough for Anthony Squitiri to hit him on a 68-yard scoring strike eight minutes into the game. Osceola answered with a 28-yard Spencer Richards field goal, but Squitiri red again to extend the lead, hitting Wes Coleman on a 51yard pass and then Keyon Fordham on a nine-yard slant route for a touchdown that made it 14-3 at the half. I didnt say much or change much at halftime, because I felt like we could keep moving the ball, and that if we came out and got a defensive stop and a score wed have changed the whole ballgame, Nichols said. But the Hurricanes scored to open the third quarter when Fordham took a jet sweep, snuck through a receiver-sized hole and went 51 yards to the house to make it 21-3. Osceola quarterback Devon Wells went 39 yards on the Kowboys next drive to set up Dwayne McGees 37-yard Bowl winnerLiberty takes Larry Gergley Gridiron win.Page 8. Manatee wrangles and shocks Kowboys, 28-17 By J. Daniel Pearson For the News-Gazette The buzz was palpable at Harmony on Friday, the first night the playo s had come to the Longhorn gridiron in 11 years, and win would mean a matchup this week at the top-seeded and venerable Lakeland Dreadnaughts. But, the Longhorns o ense never found its familiar passing gear, and a special 2018 season came to an end with a 13-6 home loss at the hands of the Kathleen Red Devils in a Class 7A Region 2 quarter nal Friday. Instead, Kathleen (6-5) and Lakeland (11-0), cross-town rivals, meet Friday at Bryant Stadium. Two long touchdown plays and key mistakes were too much for Harmony to overcome, Coach Don Simon said. A really tough one to take and certainly not the way we wanted to end our season, he said dejectedly a er the game. We had a lot of chances to take control of this game and were unable to do so. Harmony was 9-2, with the nine wins book-ended around Friday and a season-opening loss to Space Coast that the Longhorns rebounded from as well as any team could have. e Longhorns controlled much of the rst half Friday, as its defense recorded three interceptions and started in pluseld position on four of its rst ve drives. But Harmony could only manage a 3-0 lead on a Reece Allison 33-yard eld goal in the second quarter. But a pair of scores by Kathleen running back Torean Sealey in the late stages of the rst half a 90yard touchdown run, and a 44-yard catch on the last play of the half, set up earlier when Harmony was called for roughing the punter in the Red Devils end zone. Time was running out and Im not sure whether our kids just froze on the play or whether the receiver just ran by our guy, but it was an obvious mistake. Give their quarterback some credit for throwing a great ball though, Simon said about the play that put his team down 13-3 at the half. ree third-quarter trips to the red zone in the second half ended on Harmony turnovers as Kathleen held on. e Longhorns got a break when they blocked a punt to set up a rst goal inside the Kathleen 10yard line, but could only muster a 23-yard Allison eld goal to cut the See Longhorns, Page 8. Page 8 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Thursday, November 15, 2018 By Ken Jackson Sports Editor Whether Liberty was frustrated about missing the playo s at 8-2, or showing that they were a playo -caliber team or both the Chargers went out with a bang ursday in the Larry Gergley Gridiron Bowl in Winter Park. Highlighting their big-play makers from the basis of the season, the Chargers will be one of the few teams in the state to end their season with a win, a 36-22 victory over the Ocoee Knights. e Swint brothers senior receiver LaRandy (six catches, 111 yards, two touchdowns) and freshman tailback JaRandy (19 carries, 117 yards, 1 TD) had big nights, and the defense got in on the act with two sacks. At 9-2, the 2018 Chargers now hold the best record in school history, which was not lost on senior quarterback Jaelen Ray, who relished one last chance to take the eld with his teammates. We were told, if we lost, we tie the record, so, yes, there was something to play for, he said. A lot of points were scored this season, we had a lot of chemistry on o ense. Defensive end Sterly St. Felix, who had a tackle for loss and blocked a punt, said the team had to nish with a win to make anything else it did this year matter. We were out to show that it was a mistake we werent in the playo s, he said. But the best record in school history, yeah. well be proud of that. Ray hit LaRandy Swint on rst-half touchdown passes of 32 and 24 yards, and Liberty used the bruising attack of brother JaRandy, who had 112 of his yards by hal ime and scored the games rst points on a six-yard run two minutes in, to build a 22-0 hal ime lead. By that point, Ocoee (5-6) had run 15 plays and gained 35 yards. e Knights scored on their rst two second-half drives, but the Chargers answered with more of the same: two fourminute drives, and a 13-yard scoring toss from Ray to Elijah Stefanici and a three-yard Donovin Johnson three-yard run. Pennington acknowledged that playing a bowl game that ends the season, win or lose, was a bit abnormal. rough the week was a little strange, we went a little lighter with the kids because they chose to stay and do this, he said. I was a little nervous we wouldnt be serious enough in the game, but we dominated the rst half, and still didnt play with a lot of energy. Not only did the Chargers win nine games, but did so in Penningtons rst year as a head coach, including eight and a row to close out. We started making jokes around the Lake Nona game of how many rst-year coaches make the playo s, just the points didnt work out for us, he said. But it was a pretty good year. Ill take it. Ray, the Chargers 220-pound running quarterback, accounted for 45 touchdowns (25 passing, 20 rushing), an JaRandy Swint (1,169 yards, 15 TDs) had the most successful freshman season in Osceola County in recent memory. One of my assistants who coached him in Mighty Mites said they had an idea hed be a god one. We started getting him the ball as the No. 1 carrier in the Harmony game, Pennington said. Him, Lamar Patterson (15 catches, 335 yards, seven TDs) and Luis Maddox (14-225-4) will be the future of our o ense in some fashion. LONGHORNSContinued from Page 7.KOWBOYSContinued from Page 7. touchdown run that gave OHS life, but Manatee answered with a 79-yard drive ended by Squitiris one-yard scoring sneak. Down 28-10, Osceola kept ghting and made it 28-17 on the rst play of the fourth quarter when Wells hit Colton Weismore over the middle for a 30-yard touchdown pass, and then linebacker Kiyante Harrison recovered a fumble at the OHS 36 with 10:57 le in the game. But Osceolas last two drives ended with a dropped pass on fourth down and an interception by Manatees Dre Evans that dashed any hopes of a comeback. ey scored right before and right a er the half, so this could have been a 7-3 game in the third quarter, Nichols said. But credit to our kids when it was 21-3, they kept fighting to get back in the ballgame. Osceola ran the ball 55 times for 311 yards, led by Wells (19-130) and McGee (15-99), and held Manatees ground game in check. But the Kowboys could not stop Squitiri, who hit 8-of-11 passes for 167 yards. lead to 13-6 with less than ve minutes remaining. Harmony then forced a punt, and quarterback Nate Herstich moved the o ense from the Longhorn 35 to the Kathleen 18 with 24 seconds remaining, when RyShawn Clayton sacked Herstich, stripped the ball and recovered the subsequent fumble. Defensively, Harmony had three interceptions, a blocked punt, five quarterback sacks and made Kathleen turn the ball over on downs twice. But the Longhorn offense, which came into Friday averaging more than 47 points a game, was held touchdown-less with just 251 yards of total o ense. Our defense certainly played well enough to win, but on o ense we simply could not finish drives. Kathleen came up and loaded the box with eight and pressed us from the beginning. We werent able to run e ectively and our passing game was out of rhythm, Simon said. Herstich finished the game 13-of-29 for 155 yards, he also rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries. Running back Justin Gleason had 48 yards on 14 carries to nish just shy of a 1,000-yard season. Again this game was disappointing but I could not be prouder of these guys and especially our seniors, Simon said. When we got here a couple of years ago we were coming o a fourwin and season and we have now won 16 games in two years. Its something these kids should be proud of and something I am proud of. By Ken Jackson Sports Editor The deck was stacked against Gateway headed down to play the undefeated an No. 1 seeded Vero Beach Indians in Fridays Class 8A Region 2 playo s, and the hand played out about as expected. Despite scoring on their first drive, the Panthers saw Vero Beach senior quarterback Nick Celidonio show why the Indians were worthy of their credentials. He was 21-of-26 passing for 333 yards and four touchdowns, and scored a rushing touchdown in the 48-6 win. Vero Beach (11-0) built a 34-6 lead by hal ime and cruised from there. Gateway finishes 5-6 in a season that had Coach Marlin Roberts apprehensive at the start of the year, as it was clear how much the opening of Tohopekaliga Highs program depleted its depth. I dont want this playo game to be the mark of our season, because these kids busted their butts a lot to earn their place in the playo s, said Roberts, whose team needed a 55-47 nal-week win over Mount Dora to get in as the No. 8 seed and stop a three-game losing skid. It wasnt that long ago when Luke Bryan was an early a ernoon act at numerous Country under events you just never know when youre going to discover your new favorite artist or the next big thing, he added.
