By Rachel Christian Staff Writer A closely watched race for St. Cloud City Council seat 5 became a major victory for Keith Trace, a young up-and-coming engineer, who crushed incumbent Donny Shroyer by snagging 64.6 percent of the vote. Trace, who has been involved in the engineering, surveying and land development profession for 15 years, is married to Kelly Trace chief strategist of a prominent marketing rm called Reach. The couple watched results come in alongside friends and supporters Tuesday night at downtown St. Cloud spot, Brews N Blues. In the last 11 months of campaigning, I met St. Clouds best asset, its people, Trace said after the results came in. Im honored they selected me to be one of ve to lead this City and Im ready to get to work. Trace attributed his win over an established incumbent to a grassroots campaign that wanted to see a fresh face on the city council. I had a huge wave of volunteers, friends and Informing readers. Helping build a stronger community. 50 CENTS WWW.AROUNDOSCEOLA.COM Thursday, November 8, 2018 LOG ONFollow us at https:// www.facebook.com/ osceolanewsgazette FOLLOWFollow us @ AroundOsceola By Rachel Christian Staff Writer In what was expected to be a closer race, Osceola County Commission district 2 incumbent Viviana Janer crushed Republican opponent Wanda Rentas Tuesday night by grabbing 70.6 percent of the vote. Victory celebrations could be heard around the block as Janer, alongside supporters, friends and hospitality union workers, cheered and danced at the elected officials watch party at downtown Kissimmee caf, Buchito. A er the results were in, Janer said she was honored to be re-elected. The local official attributed her win to outreach efforts, community support and her involvement in the district during her first four years. The margin (of victory) is just an indicator of all the hard work that has not only been put into this election, but into the last four years of serving the constituency of district 2 and Osceola County. During her second term, Janer said she plans to continue working on issues like roads and transportation improvements, a ordable housing and bringing high wage jobs to the area. This will be Janers second four-year term on the County Commission, where she represents Buenaventura Lakes and other prominently Hispanic neighborhoods. Janer led an expensive race against Rentas, who is termed out of her current position as a Kissimmee city commissioner this month. The newly reelected official received just over $179,000 in campaign contributions this election season, compared to Rentas, who received just under $12,000. In the commission district 4 race, incumbent Cheryl Grieb, cruised to an easy win, claiming a 61.7 percent victory over Republican opponent Adam Michelin. Grieb celebrated her win at her Lakeshore Drive home surrounded by friends, family and campaigners. Keith Trace Congressman Darren Soto, state Rep Mike La Rosa win re-election By Ken Jackson Staff Writer While Democrats Andrew Gillum and Bill Nelson couldnt win the governors race or retain a U.S. Senate seat, it wasnt for their lack of support in Osceola County. Much like in 2016, when Osceola was one of seven Florida counties Hillary Clinton carried in the race for the White House, the county cast a majority of votes for Gillum, who lost to Ron DeSantis and incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson who trailed Gov. Rick Scott at press time Wednesday. Gillum garnered 59.7 percent of the county vote (68,609) to DeSantis 39 percent (44,586). For perspective, DeSantis won election by roughly 55,000 votes of the 8.1 million of them cast statewide. Nelson carried 58 percent of the county vote, 66,969 to Scotts 47,836; Scotts vote margin of about 34,500 was slimmer. Osceola was one of 13 of Floridas 67 counties that Gillum and Nelson won. For reference, Democrat Patrick Murphy carried Osceola County and eight others in the 2016 Senate race, won by Republican Marco Rubio. MR. SOTO GOES (BACK) TO WASHINGTON: On his way to another victory, U.S. Rep. Darren Soto (D-Kissimmee) carried Osceola County, which makes up the bulk of the 9th Congressional District, with 63 percent of the county vote over Republican Wayne Liebnitzky. Q&A WITH TERESA CASTILLO MEMBER, OSCEOLA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARDTeresa Terry Castillo is the most recently elected official to the Osceola County School Board. She defeated her opponent, Shel Hart, in the August primaries, and will now assume her district 1 seat. She replaces Jay Wheeler, who held the seat for 16 years. We sat down with Castillo to discuss education, gender and the future of Osceola County schools. Osceola News-Gazette: The education field has traditionally been dominated by women, yet you are the only female on the School Board. What are some of your thoughts about female leadership in education and bringing diversity to the board? Terry Castillo: I know that I will certainly bring a very dierent perspective to the School Board, not only because I am a woman, but because my life experiences are so vastly dierent from that of the gentlemen I serve with. I am a single mother of color, and while I will be wearing this lens as a member of the board, I am also bringing with me working knowledge of the education eld, my experience as an indebted college graduate and my experience as a rstgeneration American. is awareness of the challenges that our graduates and parents face is really what will set me apart from my colleagues. ONG: Your predecessor served in his position for 16 years. What positive new changes and perspectives do you hope to bring to the position? Castillo: Sixteen years is a very long time to serve. To put it into perspective, I was just two years out of high school when Mr. Wheeler began his term. One thing that I am going to bring to my position is a focus on the strength of our districts diversity. While visiting with neighbors from across the district, I was able to experience rsthand how distinct each neighborhood is. I would like to leverage these dierences to strengthen our educational landscape. Fresh face for future of education Teresa Castillo See Castillo, Page 6.

The money will fund programs focused on foster kids before they reach their critical adolescent years. is approach will focus on an often overlooked population of 6to 12-yearolds in licensed care, said Glen Casel, president and CEO of Community Based Care of Central Florida. Nearly 40 percent of teenagers currently in foster care have been removed from their homes at least twice. LISA CONCEPCIONPoinciana WriterCASTILLOContinued from Page 2 ONG: What is the most interesting new thing youve learned or experienced since you joined the School Board? Castillo: Since being elected 10 weeks ago, I have not stopped learning. Most recently, I was able to participate in the STEM lab bus tour. As an advocate for STEM education, I experienced the innovative curriculum o ered by Mr. Luciano and the Special Programs team. I was unaware that this is the only program of its kind in the country. ink about the importance of that. Our school district is at the cutting edge of innovation and this is certainly something to be celebrated. ONG: What seems to be the most rewarding aspect of serving? Castillo: Osceola County has been very kind to me. Whatever success Ive had professionally is a direct cause of the teachers and administrators in our school district. From Mrs. Vazquez calling me over the summer to ask me why I was not enrolled in her collegelevel English class to Ms. Hinson who allowed me to develop my leadership skills as president of the espian Club, I owe a lot to this community. Now that I am able to be an e ective leader, I am paying it forward. Protecting public education as a way to ensure more Osceola County students have the opportunity to do great things is the most rewarding aspect of this role. ONG: Why do you think you won the race and what were some of your first thoughts a er winning? Castillo: I won because the community was behind me. I personally knocked on thousands of doors in our district and ran a very engaging race. I had hundreds of one-on-one genuine conversations with my district 1 neighbors. is is also how I intend to interact with the community for the next four years. I spent election night alone at home drenched in sweat and rainwater. It was a tough day. When my campaign manager informed me that I won, my rst thought was: Vindication. My spirit was tested that day and I felt vindicated. ONG: What is one goal or initiative you would like to tackle as a board member before the school year ends? Castillo: As I learn the ins and outs of my new role, one thing that is always on my mind is how we can improve the work conditions of our teachers. ere are things out of our control with respect to how we conduct the business of the school board. Still, there are things within our control. Finding a more e ective way of measuring success as well as rewarding the expertise of our teachers in a more equitable manner is at the top of my list. As a result, the County Commission Chambers, located at 1 Courthouse Square in Kissimmee, will be closed for approximately one month. Meetings scheduled for the space are being moved to other locations. For more information visit www.osceola.org/events/. Our systems are about 10 years old, and thats several lifetimes in a technological timeline, said Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins, Jr. We were ahead of the curve years ago when we installed the existing equipment in the Chambers, and this upgrade will meet public demands to make our meetings easy to access both in the chambers and online. e improvements in quality and reliability will be noticeable, and will serve to meet the current and future needs of our citizens. Due to the renovation and alternative locations, meetings typically scheduled with a live stream broadcast will be recorded and posted on the Countys website on a delayed basis. Live streams will not be available until renovations are finished. The board chambers are expected to reopen in midto-late December. e closure of the board chambers is necessary to begin the installation of more than $250,000 of equipment. Major upgrades included in the project are production/streaming video equipment, HD cameras, a new hearing assist system, new display monitors and an improved document camera to display printed materials. A new high resolution projector for the audience installed earlier this year also will be switched over from an analog to a digital signal. This is the first major upgrade of the electronic equipment in the chamber since 2008. ough a users Internet connection is a prime factor in determining the quality and reliability of the video streaming experience, this new technology should eliminate any issues of the video feed distributed by the Countys system. Led by the Information Technology Department, work is being done by Arnco Construction and In nity AV & Security.STATE RACESContinued from Page 1 LA ROSA, CORTES GOING BACK TO TALLAHASSEE: Voters in District 42 have sent state Rep. Thursday, November 8, 2018 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Page 7 By Ken Jackson Sports Editor e Liberty Chargers are gearing up for a football game this week, but its likely not the one players and coaches had hoped for. Instead of suiting up for a Region 7A-2 playo game, the Chargers, despite going 8-2, will play tonight at 7 p.m. in the Rotary Bowl against Ocoee (5-5) at Winter Parks Showalter Field. Coach Brandon Penningtons team got caught up in the math problem that is the FHSAAs playo points formula. It entered the week eighth in the region but was passed by other teams getting more points for playing opponents with better records. By last Tuesday I gured that Lake Nona (a 6-4 team who Liberty mauled 62-28 on Oct. 26) would pass us because theyd get ve more points for losing to us when we became a Tier 1 team (at 8-2), he said. But when the brackets were announced Sunday it was Tampa Gaither, rather than Lake Nona, earning a bid. At least it was Gaither, Nona would have been a tough pill to swallow. We had our kids and coaches in and when it was announced, it got real quiet. Im really glad that our kids get By Ken Jackson Sports Editor Its time for Osceola to begin its annual climb up the playo football mountain. e Kowboys, 9-1 aer a 21-13 win over Lake Brantley on Friday to close the regular season, will welcome back Bradenton Manatee (6-4) to Henry Ramsey Field this Friday for Region 8A-2 quarternal. The goal is Camping World Stadium, home of the state championships in four weeks, is the goal. e Kowboys made it to backto-back title games in 2014 (Class 7A) and 2015 (8A) before falling in the quarternal in and in the seminal last year, to eventual 8A state champion Dr. Phillips. So this aint Osceolas rst rodeo. The Kowboys swallowed the Hurricanes under, 44-16, last year thanks to six sacks from a defense that held Manatee to minus-19 yards rushing. Manatee (6-4), off a 44-13 loss to reigning Class 7A state champion Venice, comes in with a new quarterback this year, senior Anthony Squiteri (5-10, 180). But the offense runs through senior playmaker Keyon Fordham (5-7, 170), who can line up behind center, in the backeld or split out wide. e new quarterback throws it pretty well, OHS Coach Doug Nichols said. e problem is they will get it to (Fordham). He is dangerous, well have to stop him to win. If its Friday, Nichols looks to run the ball, meaning an oensive line of Delfin Castillo, Nash Nelson, Kalil Holly, Jomar Estrada and Cody Carter will have to continue to push piles and open holes for a running attack that averaged over 280 yards and four touchdowns per game. The defensive line of Mario Kendricks (the only 2017 starter), Bryce Barrett, Boris Espinosa, Jake McKinney and Dylan Ruiz has also been giving teams ts this year. I think both of our fronts, the offensive and defensive lines, will need to play really well Friday, he said. Osceola clinched the No. 2 seed in the region with the win over Osceola Lions Orlando City plans for OHP training site.Page 8. Kowboys welcome back Manatee in 8A quarterfinalGateway faces tall task of winning at top-seed Vero Beach By Ken Jackson Sports Editor Harmony will host its first regional playo game in 11 years Friday when the Longhorns put their nine-game winning streak on the line against the Kathleen Red Devils in a Region 7A-2 quarternal at 7:30 p.m. e Longhorns (9-1) were idle the last week of the regular season and have had two full weeks to prepare for ... well, some playo opponent, who finally had an identity Sunday in Kathleen (5-4). ey were second place in District 7A-6 to Lakeland, and Fridays winner likely gets the No. 1 seeded Dreadnaughts (10-0) in Lakeland next week. Kathleen was also o last week. Harmony Coach Don Simon said he doesnt expect his team to have to work o a layo or knock o rust early in Fridays game. The byes not going to be a factor. We didnt take it easy these last two weeks, weve gone at our same pace every day, he said. Well approach it and prepare the same way as we have any other game this year. e phrase, Take em one game at a time has never been truer than this. Oddly enough, Kathleen won four of ve road games this season while going 1-3 at home. eyre comparable to Gateway or Liberty, big and athletic and can run the ball. Its a good draw for us, Simon said. Harmonys oense this season attacked in multiple ways. Quarterback Nate Herstich threw for 1,506 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for another 572 and eight scores. Running back Justin Gleason (154-936-11) will likely become the countys fourth 1,000-yard rusher this season. Twelve of 6-5 wideout Caeleb Bass 37 receptions went for touchdowns. I like where we are coming out of the season, Simon said. We did a lot of taking was given and attacking. Despite making the playos in 2013 and as district runnersup, the Longhorns have not won a playo game since 2007, when they beat Hudson and Eustis before falling at Citra North Marion in the regional nal. We saw them in a summer camp. eyre strong, big, athletic and have all kinds of tradition of being where they are. Well just have to slow the game down and play keep away from their oense. Can we get it done? Well see. Our kids have been defying expectations all year. e Indians favor a passing attack on the arm of senior quarterback Nick Celidonio, whos thrown for 2,418 yards and 24 touchdowns against just ve interceptions this year. e go-to guy is senior Demarcus Harris (56 catches, 1,342 yards, 13 TDs) but four receivers have caught at least 22 balls. The Panthers needed the win Friday in Mount Dora just to sneak into the playos, and looked to be well on their way. ey held a 2714 halime lead on the strength of three Tyler Tyrell rst-have touchdowns, and were still up 41-28 through three quarters. But Mount Dora wrapped touchdowns around an onside kick, tying the game at 48 before Panther junior Phillip Bangura scored with 1:45 le to put Gateway back on top. e Hurricanes still had a chance at the end, but safety Ken Normil batted down a pass in the end zone. e third-quarter lull has been a problem for us, but we have a group of seniors who decided not to let it happen again, Roberts said, ey wanted to go out winners and get to the playos. Page 8 OSCEOLA NEWS-GAZETTE Thursday, November 8, 2018 SPORTSanother game that they earned, because they played hard for us, LHS rst-year coach Pennington said. Just to be in the discussion, Liberty had to take care of business against winless Lake Region Friday and did so early, taking a 34-0 lead a er one quarter and cruising to a 53-6 Senior Night victory. Freshman tailback JaRandy Swint (nine carries, 157 yards, 3 TDs) and senior quarterback Jaelen Ray (2-27-2) ran for first-quarter touchdowns, Luis Maddox hauled in a 33-yard touchdown catch, and Lamar Patterson (104yard interception return) and Sterly St. Felix (blocked punt) had defensive scores. Everybody who we wanted to see play, and all our seniors got signi cant time, Pennington said. Libertys top playmakers will get to add to their numbers tonight. Ray (1,525 passing yards, 22 TDs, 773 rushing yards, 20 TDs) made the spread-option o ense go, and Swint (1411,063-14) eclipsed the 1,000yard rushing mark. Osceola ran for 179 yards, a season-low in victory, but had four runners get 30 yards. Soccer fields would replace four baseball fields at the facility, scheduled to open in July 2019. By Ken Jackson Sports Editor St. Cloud may have posted back-to-tack 4-6 seasons, but the one just wrapped up looks better to Coach Bryan Smart than 2017. e Bulldogs nished o a four-game winning streak Friday with a 52-8 win over Lake Alfred Discovery (4-6) at home. Do-it-all senior Seth Johnson closed his career with a bang, rushing for 155 yards and a touchdown and catching six passes for 108 and another score. Sophomore quarterback Garhett King, who started the year as the backup, took the reigns of the job and hasnt looked back. He was 11-for11 for 256 yards and five TDs Friday, and managed to throw for 1,078 yards and 16 touchdowns in just less than half a season as starter. Garhett really stepped into the role in a big way. Koron (Perrin, the original starter) is still very important, too, as a slot receiver. Perrin, Romeo Medina, and Javon Shackleford also caught touchdown passes Friday. Our goal coming out of the Liberty game (where they were tied 16-16 at halftime against the 8-2 Chargers) was to get to 4-6, Smart said. It would have been easy for the kids to fold the tent at 0-6, but when Seth Johnson is your teammate, you dont quit. Aside from King, other young players emerged like Medina, and defensive backs Tyler Ford and Trace Clark. The benefit of being young this year is that were in a great spot for next year, because I know these kids are going to work hard, Smart said. I wish we could have been in the playo s, but I wish Osceola, Gateway and Harmony all the luck in the world. Poinciana also nished its season Friday, going 2-8 after a 33-0 loss to George Jenkins. e Eagles, in Coach Phillip Priors rst season, got wins over Tohopekaliga and Christ Church Academy. Tohopekaliga and Celebration had byes on Friday after finishing 2-7 and 2-8 seasons. e Tigers defeated the Storm on Sept. 14 for their rst win, and got another the next week over Bartow, as Coach Anthony Davis led the team in its rst season. e Storm were 2-1 out of the gate a er wins over Poinciana and Cypress Creek in Coach Jay Sobkes second year leading Celebration.Bulldogs nish season with four-game winning streak Orlando City Soccer reveals plans to build training center at Heritage Park By Ken Jackson Sports Editor e Orlando City Soccer Club announced late last week that it will open anew training complex at Osceola Heritage Park in July 2019, midway through the next MLS season. Renderings show that the soccer elds will replace at least four of the baseball fields currently behind Osceola County Stadium at the northeast side of OHP. The new facility will become the permanent training complex for OCSC and the National Womens Soccer Leagues Orlando Pride. The training complex is the heart of our soccer operations. Its where our product on the eld reports to work every day, where they eat and recover, and most importantly, where they build the team culture and attitude that carries over to the stadium on match days, Orlando City SC CEO Alex Leito said in the statement. Weve worked hard to secure the best opportunity to support both player development and the recruitment of top talent over the past four seasons with the establishment of a top-notch soccer stadium in 2017 and now the addition of a new state-of-the-art training complex in 2019. Robb Larson, General Manager of Osceola Heritage Park/SMG, said this was the kind of deal SMG had been looking for when an agreement was reached in 2017 for the facility manager to take over the baseball complex operations this October; Osceola County had been operating it. We began eyeballing opportunities that we could approach when we to took over; when the Houston Astros le (in 2017) it le a black hole in that part of the complex in what the Florida Fire Frogs werent using, Larson said. When I heard Orlando City might have a need, and we had a void to fill, we reasoned it would be a logical and great opportunity for us and them. e move, coupled with the arrival of the Orlando SeaWolves of the Major Arena Soccer League later this month, turns Osceola County into an epicenter for professional soccer. We saw that correlation, along with whats happening nationally with soccer, Larson said. Sources say this complex was in the works for months, and SMG, not Osceola County, carried out the deal to address Orlando Citys request for total con dentiality. Eyewitnesses sawLeito and associates touring the portion of the facility that included the former Astros minor-league building and rear cloverleaf fields beginning late last summer. e club said the complex will have four full-size grass soccer elds, seperate locker rooms for the Orlando City Lions and Pride to be near replicas of the home locker room at Orlando City Stadium, tness, training and recovery centers, lm review room and players lounge and dining area. e administration building will be renovated to include ,000 square feet of o ce space for working sta and facilities to support media operations. Osceola County Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins, Jr., who acknowledged the secrecy of the deal from Orlando Citys end, called the project, Great for Osceola and for Heritage Park. There are only a few top-flight professional sports teams in the area, so for two of them to build an exclusive training facility in Osceola County to use for years to come is very signi cant, he said. 062818.TNG 1424 Hamlin Avenue, Unit C | St. Cloud, FL 34771407-957-5959 REPAIRS STA RTING AT $20.00FREE ESTIMATES!
