Unseasonably warm temperatures have made outdoor activities for individuals like this angler fishing on Lake Hernando even more enjoyable. Conditions are predicted to change significantly this week, as a cold front passes across the region sending nighttime temperatures into the 20s Wednesday morning.

Pat Moore can't talk about her daughter, Melissa, without telling the alligator story.
They lived in Homosassa, by the Homosassa River, and Melissa and her friend, Mack, said they were going "alligator hunting;"
Moore, who thought it was cute that these two kids were playing hunters, laughed it off until she found them dangling a piece of chicken tied to a cane pole over the water.
Seeing an alligator jump for it, Moore yelled, "What are you doing? What if that alligator comes out after you?"
In typical Melissa fashion, the little girl shrugged. "Well, we'll just run."
The girl who was fearless, who never met a stranger, who was vinegar and sass and whose smile could melt an iceberg, died Dec. 17 after a long battle with Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA), a progressive nerve disease.
She was 25.
At one time, Melissa's life was normal. Until she was 3, she liked wearing prissy dresses, but after that no way.
Her mother and father divorced when Moore was pregnant, and Melissa grew up with just her mom and an older brother, Samuel.
"Music was always her thing," Moore said. "When she was 3 or 4, she wanted to be the next Cindi Lauper."
She wanted to sing and dance on stage. When she got older, she would listen to tapes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and say, "He came

Deadline today to set political party affiliation
Today is the deadline to change your party affiliation for the Jan. 29 presidential preference primary.
That date is important because Florida is a closed primary state, meaning registered Democrats may vote only a Democrat ticket and registered Republicans may vote only a Republican ticket.
Voters who are registered as neither Democrat nor Republican do not participate in choosing nominees for president in the primary.
However, all voters regardless of party registration may vote for the constitutional amendment on property taxes.

Vandals hit Beverly Hills
Swimming pool at recreation association damaged, nearby Lions Club also struck
jeff bryan jbryan@chronicleonline.com
Chronicle
More than $14,000 in improvements to the Beverly Hills Recreation Association swimming pool took a hit late Friday night or early Saturday morning, after vandals struck.
Members of the association recently had the pool resurfaced and new tile work completed in early December.
Vandals threw a concrete bench, a metal gate, a wheelbarrow, two concrete blocks and a wooden bench into the pool at 77 Civic Circle. The skimmer, which had also been resurfaced
during the remodeling project, was cracked in two places on the east side of the pool. Plans for refurbishing the pool took 18 months, said Mike Colbert, Beverly Hills Recreation Association's first vice president.
"I guess people just get a charge out of destroying other people's property," Colbert said.
Obviously, if you can catch them at it, it would be wonderful, he added.
"If they set out to hurt people and make them feel bad. They succeeded on all points," Colbert said about the damage to the pool.
There was a surveillance camera in place, which Citrus County Sheriff's
officials confiscated so they could review it in hopes of obtaining identities of those responsible for the incident. More information is expected later in the week, according to sheriff spokeswoman Gail Tierney.
According to association members, damage is estimated at a minimum of $2,000, but the figure could go up depending on if there is any damage to the bottom of the pool. Members of the association have yet to remove the items that were thrown into the pool during the incident.
The vandalism at the Recreation Association may also be linked to an incident that happened at the nearby Beverly Hills Lions Club, which is also on Civic Circle.
At about 7 a.m. Saturday, a community patrol unit found the club's picnic tables in the roadway and the bingo sign broken in half and lying on the
ground. Damages are estimated as less than $200, according to Tierney.
This isn't the first time.vandals have struck facilities at the Beverly Hills Recreation Association.
In January 2006, then 18-year-old Jason Hall and a girlfriend set fire to the association's gazebo. Hall pled no contest to second-degree arson charges in late 2006. In February 2007, Hall's 10-year sentence for the arson charge, as well as lewd and lascivious battery were reduced to 10 years' probation. He was also ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to the association for the damage to the gazebo.
"Obviously, I wish there was something that could be done to amuse these characters for their so-called energies," Colbert said. "God knows if I could think of it, I'd help do something about it or see to it that our organization did something."

years running," Citrus County School Board member Ginger Bryant said, adding every year, the bar is set higher for teacher's and students.
To keep on the fast track to success for the 2007-08 school year, school officials and administrators planned to maintain students' high achievement scores and target weak academic areas, measured by the FCAT. In August, Himmel said she intended to develop last year's initiatives and strengthen existing programs to help students thrive.
School board members spent time in meetings during the past few months analyzing and discussing ways to measure the effectiveness of existing initiatives and programs. They asked officials to provide data to track the progress of students and teachers involved in programs.
"We're into our second (school) year now with this ninth-grade academy concept," board member Pat Deutschman said.
School officials and administrators launched the ninth-grade academies during the 2006-07 school year. The purpose of placing ninth-graders in academies is to get freshmen to academically graduate to the 10th grade, better prepare them for the FCAT and have them exhibit satisfactory attendance and behavior, according to school officials.
The students have homeroom each day to learn study habits and social skills, which educators hope will help students better transition from middle school to high school classes. Also, teachers in math, English, science and social studies teach the same group of students. The teaching team has the same planning periods each day to meet and discuss students' progress.
School board members and officials are keeping a close watch on the ninth-grade academies to see if fewer students drop out of school, Deutschman said. It will take another two years to determine if the venture paid off long term because only then school board members can see how many of the initial ninth-graders involved in the academies graduate, Deutschman said.
Deutschman also said school board members are tracking the progress of students who were sent to the Renaissance Center after they were expelled for serious offenses, such as drug possession; there, they can continue schooling while going through intervention and therapy. In January, board members are expecting a report about how many students stayed with the program, complied with the rules and returned to their original schools without repeating offenses.
Generating new programs to fuel students' growth was just as vital this year as improving existing programs. Recently, school officials and administrators teamed up with Citrus County Sheriff's Office officials to launch a teen-driving program for Citrus County high school students. The Teen Driver Challenge is a course that teaches teenagers how to react in a variety of emergency situations. Starting in January, all juniors and seniors, who have driver's licenses and access to vehicles, can opt to attend four hours of classroom, instruction, followed by six hours of on-the-road training.
Also this school year, school officials and administrators looked for ways to better educational environments for students, teachers and faculty. Budgeting for necessary maintenance and capacity projects to combat growth, meet class-size amendment standards and maintain updated facilities is an ongoing process, Himmel said.
Continued from Page 1A
l In August, after a three-year battle, the school district received financial compensation for the upset and inconvenience caused by flawed construction at Homosassa Elementary School in 2004.
i In October, Superintendent Sandra "Sam" Himmel received a letter from Florida Department of Education officials stating the "B" grade assigned, to Inverness Primary School in the spring, based on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores, was upgraded to an "A."
i In November, former Citrus County School Board vice-chairwoman Linda Powers was voted school board chairwoman.
i In November, school board members approved the decision made by teacher's union members to discontinue involvement in the state's performance pay program, the Merit Award Program (MAP).
i In December, Inverness Primary School student Jordan David "Booka" Hays, 9, died after he was dragged underneath a wheel of a float and run over at the Plant City Christmas Parade.
The class-size reduction amendment calls for no more than 18 pupils in a classroom in kindergarten through third grade, no more than 22 pupils per class in grades four through eight, and no more than 25 students per class in high school classes. Meeting the standards set in the amendment has been a challenge for school officials, especially with recent state budget short-falls resulting in local budget cuts. On a limited budget, officials have to continuously create more classroom space and hire more teachers, all of which are costly
Therefore, school board members thoroughly discussed and prioritized construction projects based on concrete studies this year The 2007-08 five-year district facilities work plan, approved by board members in September, outlined necessary facility projects and projected costs.
The projects were divided into two categories, maintenance projects and capacity projects. Maintenance projects involve renovations and remodeling for reasons other than addressing growth, such as replacing an old roof.
Capacity projects, such as new schools, are based on population growth and projected student enrollment
Officials prioritized the projects using facilities assessment studies and administrative input For maintenance projects, officials walked through schools, as they do annually, with a checklist to make sure conditions are satisfactory according to a
2006 baseline, countywide facilities condition study. Principals also had access to project request forms.
"It's a total change in how we previously tackled projects," Deutschman said. Assessment tools allow officials to make objective decisions based on data rather than subjective decisions based on only administrative opinions, Deutschman said.
In January, board members will review studies regarding upcoming renovation projects at Crystal River Primary and Crystal River High School set to begin in 2008. Also, the construction of the new elementary school, Central Ridge Elementary, will conclude in 2008. Current Rock Crusher Elementary Principal Nancy Simon will be principal of Central Ridge Elementary School when its doors open for the 2008-09 school year. Current Rock Crusher Elementary School Assistant Principal John Weed will take her place as principal of Rock Crusher Elementary next school year
In order to fill Central Ridge Elementary School with students and combat countywide school overcrowding as a result of residential growth, five schools' attendance boundaries were modified this year based on Elementary School Attendance Boundary Study findings. For the 2008-08 school year, about 700 students will relocate to new schools as a result of zone changes.
"We got through the rezoning and I think everybody is excited about the new school," Himmel said.

Citrus County students ranged from the 63rd to 79th percentile in reading and from the 64th to 81st percentile in math.

from around here, and if he can do it, so can I."
Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, she got to travel to California to meet Petty when she was 16.
It was while in fourth grade that Melissa's normal life started turning abnormal. She developed learning and attention span and behavioral problems, which prompted a series of psychological tests. Then, her feet started turning in and her teachers at school thought she had scoliosis.
She went to All Children's Hospital and Shands for tests; nobody could figure out what was causing her symptoms. At 15, she was finally diagnosed at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As her disease progressed, she lived life from a wheelchair.
Melissa was born in Inverness, but grew up in Homosassa, then Crystal River She attended Lecanto Primary School, Homosassa Elementary School, the Marine Science Station in Crystal River, Crystal River Middle School and Crystal River High School.
She also participated in a veterinary assistant program. Although she was unable to complete the course because of her illness, she received an honorary certificate.
In February 2004, Moore and Melissa moved into a Habitat for Humanity home in Inverness, complete with a mural of a tropical rainforest on Melissa's bedroom wall and personalized handicap-accessible features just for Melissa.
Her story was told in the May 2005 issue of Ladies Home Journal.
In 2005, Melissa told the Chronicle that during her home's construction, she hammered a nail in the back of her closet by herself.
"It was just one nail, and it took a long time, but it made me feel a part of the process," she said.
She also told the Chronicle that she thought of her wheelchair as a platform for encouragement to others and a vehicle for sharing her Christian faith.
"I think God has me in this wheelchair to be an example for other people in wheelchairs who are down and out, because I'm free-spirited and I give all thanks to God," she said.
Moore said her daughter's faith was strong and her attitude was almost always upbeat, but at times she would hear
Melissa's prayers cries of "Why God, why?" and "When I get to heaven, I've got some questions I want answered!"
"She always wanted to help other people," Moore said. "She gave her hair to Locks of Love three times and wanted to do it again."
Several months ago, she told her mother that she wanted her body to go to medical research "so other children don't have to go through this."
"I used to look at her sometimes and stroke her hair and say, 'My poor baby,' Moore said. "But she would always say to me, 'I'm not poor I'm rich in love.'"
Carmen Brown, part of the Morning Cruise radio team at Joy FM, the Christian radio station that broadcasts from Sarasota, is one of the people who made Melissa's life rich. Melissa kept the radio station on 24/7, listening to the music and e-mailing the DJs.
"Every summer, we take what we call a 'Summer Cruise' to locations around the area, and in July 2006 we were in Inverness doing a live broadcast at Tire Kingdom," Brown said. "In comes Melissa with Matthew (her service dog), and it was her smile that first caught me. She just grinned from ear to ear
"I spent much of the day talking with her. She was so happy and so full of joy, and she knew everything about every Christian artist She was like an encyclopedia of Christian music," Brown said.
Melissa's most recent favorite artist was Brandon Heath and especially loved his song, "I'm Not Who I Was."
In 2007, the Summer Cruise was at the Vine Cafe in Inverness, with special guest star, Brandon Heath.
"It was pouring down rain and in comes Melissa," Brown said. Heath signed a CD for her, and befriended her, which made her day. He sang at her memorial service, Dec. 20, after

rearranging his touring and professional schedule.
Brown said that every year they do a drawing for a VIP vacation to Disney's Night of Joy in October, and out of thousands of entries Melissa's name was drawn.
"It was pure Providence," she said.
Two months later, days before, Melissa died, Brown sat on Melissa's hospital bed and sang Brandon Heath songs with her..
She loved music and sang; alto in the choir and women's ensemble at her church, Gulf to" Lake Church in Crystal River., Nancy Bertine,^ the music director and pastor's wife, called Melissa "courageous and lov-' ing."
"She wanted" badly to sing with us, and w& did everything we could to accommodate her and her wheelchair," she said. "It always leaves such a void when some-', one dies. She'll be missed."
Melissa loved pepperonj pizza and knew the movie" "Labyrinth" by heart She was an honorary member of the^ Citrus County Cruisers, had her own jacket
When she realized she'd; never be on stage as a singerr she wanted to work with animals. She loved old TV comedy' shows "The Cosby Show," "I; Love Lucy," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Sanford and' Son."
Her favorite color was hotl pink She had every R.L. Stine-"Goosebumps" book. She was a' huge "American Idol" fan. She was outspoken. She loved people and animals and being with-her cousins at Christmas. ; *
The doctors had predicted she wouldn't live to be 19, but she did.
"She was so proud of that,"-her mother said. "She'd always' | say, 'They said I'd never make it; but I'm still kickin'."

Awareness of trailer park plan made big difference
People got pretty upset when they heard that a number of mobile homes had been purchased for the purpose of creating a trailer park for sexual offenders and predators. And that was the goal of Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy and County Administrator June Fisher when they informed the newspaper of the purchase. The sheriff and Mrs. Fisher knew that this was not good for the county, and wanted to raise the awareness of local residents.
Public dissension paid off and HAR-COR, the corporation that planned to model the property after a Tampa Bay area trailer park called The Palace, abandoned the idea and re-sold the land this past week.
The Palace houses more than 80 sexual offenders and predators who have been released on parole or probation. While the project in Citrus County would not have been as large, it most certainly would have been as dangerous.
A lot of people talk about protecting the character of Citrus County. From the waterways to the roads to the building of infra-

OUR OPINION:
This is a better plan.
structure and the attracting of new business, everyone must be involved if we are to maintain the uniqueness of this area. The safety of county residents is at the top of the list of concerns.
This could have very easily taken place and no one would have known until it was too late, but the fast action of our public officials raised the awareness, rallied public opposition and surprised the corporation to the point HAR-COR president Dobkin changed his
where Harris mind.
Sexual offenders and predators must have a place to live when they are released from prison, but there are larger areas and communities with many more services and safety measures in place to help them make a successful transition back into society.
Sheriff Dawsy and Mrs. Fisher did the county a favor by bringing the issue to light. HAR-COR has moved on and the trailers in Inverness have been purchased by someone else who reportedly plans to renovate them and sell them to individuals. And that's a better plan.
Life on death row
I like (the) letter to the editor, "Murderers' appeals." That's the problem in this country; murderers get to live 25, 30 years or longer after they murder a victim. The victim's dead and stopped breathing, but they're still alive at taxpayers' expense. They ought to get one appeal and it should be done within a year. Then they should be put to death and it should be up to the victim's family whether they get the injection or murdered the way they murdered the victim.
Front page quote
Today, Dec. 27, on the front page, Rudy Giuliani said, "For Americans generally, the demise" which means death or abjuration,.which means to give up, renounce formally "of the religious right is good news." Christians, wake up.
Editor's note: The quote is clearly attributed to the Chronicle's Opinion page, 8A, not the news story about Rudy Giuliani on Page 3A. The person quoted is syndicated columnist and radio show host Bill Press, author of "How the Republicans Stole Religion," not Giuliani.
Gift cards rejected
Dec. 26, the day after Christmas, great sales going on everywhere. Go to (a store), have $150 in gift cards, get to the register, have $146 in purchases and they tell me that they cannot accept the gift cards because, fantastically, the machine is not working, yet it still took my credit or debit card. How convenient for (the store), and how inconvenient for the customers.
Why have dog?
What's the reason? I am a dog lover and assume, all too often, that others love their animals the same ...You have a home,.fenced, and you used to have a black young dog in that large fenced yard. I thought that's the reason you have a pet, to
keep them a part of your life and family. But now you decided, after months, to pen this poor baby in a small, small pen away from all of you and what he was used to. Now the question is why? What's the reason you have a dog at all? He must now just be a bother to you all. You may feed him and water him, but you took away his opportunity to do what he was used to being a part of your family and being a part of your life. Now he's just a bother. Shame on you.
Just do without
I, too, am upset about the person who stated that candy canes are made in Mexico now
fbecause American companies have moved south because of lower wages that they have to pay employees. I think one way you get around this thing is if this country unites and sticks together and quits buying this junk. Start making your own bread at home. Start doing your own stuff, like we did back in the '30s and '40s. Stop buying for about a week and you're going to see a big change going on because those people aren't going to be making the money they think they are. Quit buying this junk. Do without it or find an alternative source. How did we do it back in the '30s and '40s?
No to parkway
I'm not at all for this Suncoast (Parkway) coming through Citrus County, so I think the county commissioners better start thinking about it. They're wasting a lot of taxpayers' money and taking a lot of the land away from people who have been here for many, many years, just so they can build a highway. Nobody wants the highway to go through Citrus County. And for now, it takes me $5 one way just to go from here to Tampa, whea before it used to only cost me $2.50 for the cross-town expressway. So what am I saving? I'm paying for that highway. No, no, no, that's too expensive.

Socks of Love
The week before Thanksgiving, during National Hunger and Homeless-ness Awareness week, Mid Florida Homeless Coalition encouraged Citrus County residents to donate food and hygiene items to shelters and emergency service providers across the county.
We would like to thank those who reached out to assist their fellow residents by donating these basic items to our local service providers. We also appreciate the opportunity given to us by those organizations that invited us to share information about the homeless of our community. We are grateful for the continuing generosity of this community.

Common knowledge
Reading Sound Off brings to light the most obvious problem for the future of Citrus County, namely uninformed voters. Homosassa is not a city, nor does the county commission have anything to do with putting up Christmas lights or repairing U.S. 19. And no one within this county removes Jerry Springer from cable and puts on a religious show. This lack of common knowledge about how this country/county operates is well reflected in most of the stupid calls to Sound Off. Yes, it is a laugh to most readers, but these same callers also vote with the same lack of knowledge. And that is really, scary!
The last election is an example of money and newspaper endorsements

having swayed the outcome. I can't blame anyone for using all the resources they can to get elected. But big, red flags should have been waving when someone is working with a $70,000+ campaign budget to get a $50,000-a-year position. However, I do find it a bit funny that now the Chronicle is critical of its two endorsed candidates, and the voters also are upset with their performance most of the time. Something as simple as banning fast-release fertilizers can't come to a vote in two years. And solving the space problems is about to be resolved at the most expensive outcome to the taxpayers, yet great for the businesses of Inverness. And the Suncoast II will be supported, no matter how badly it splits the county in half. Nothing is a surprise when we have
a homebuilder and a real estate agent on the commission. They will support growth, as it is the way they make their living. I do not slight them at all. But it is truly funny to see the endless unsigned issues printed in Sound Off. If I were that lacking in what makes the world operate, I would not sign my name, either.
Please take time to learn about people you vote for, and soon! Perhaps then we can keep Citrus part of the Nature Coast, instead of the newest housing Mecca in Florida.

Nelson helpful
I recently had cause to deal with one of the federal agencies. Knowing what a colossal challenge that can sometimes be, I contacted Sen. Bill Nelson, Sen. Mel Martinez, and Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite for any assistance they could provide.
Although all three elected officials displayed some interest in providing some assistance to me, it was Nelson and his fine staff who demonstrated superlative efforts and persistence in dealing with my inquiry.
The object of my inquiry resulted in a very positive outcome for me, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciated the work of Nelson and his staff. They kept me updated, and at all times they were courteous, sincere and followed through on everything they stated they would.
I am grateful for their assistance, and will not forget my positive and rewarding experience with Nelson and his fine staff.

The PlusCode number printed next to each program is for use with the Gemstar VCR Plus+ system. If you have a VCR with the VCR Plus+ feature (identified by the VCR Plus+ logo on your VCR), all you need to do to record a program is enter its
PlusCode number.
If you have cable service, please make sure that your cable channel numbers are the same as the channel numbers in this guide. If not, you will need to perform a simDle one-time procedure to match up the
cable channels with the guide channel numbers using the convenient chart printed in the Viewfinder. This procedure is described in your VCR user's manual. Should you have questions about your VCR Plus+ system, please contact your VCR manufacturer.
The channel lineup for KLiP Interactive cable customers is in the Sunday Viewfinder on page 70.
