Haviland soon found himself on the shore — and the only line of communication from the ship to the front line. “All our tanks tipped over, and heavy artillery was lost,” he said. “It was a bit unorganized, but everything turned out all right.” It was during this operation Haviland experienced his rst close call with enemy re. “I stood up, and a sniper got off three shots,” said Haviland. “One bullet was just eight inches away from my stomach. When they say eight inches of sand will stop a .30 caliber bullet, it’s true. The shell just spun in the sand.” But it was during the 60th Infantry’s drive along the Tunisia-Algeria border, when he was assigned as a colonel’s radio operator, that Haviland calls one of his most riveting memories. “I was a Private First Class, and the Colonel asked me to get a hold of 2nd Battalion,” said Haviland. “When I couldn’t, the colonel was rather sharp with me, wanting to know why I couldn’t reach them. I just looked at him, not saying a word. ‘Well?’ he insisted. I said, ‘Are you getting an answer?’ I paused for a moment while the colonel just stared at me and added: Well, neither was I.’ It was maybe my best and worst moment,” he chuckled. That colonel soon reassigned Haviland to the 2nd Battalion. More than ten radio operators had already died in that battalion — the very one he couldn’t reach — but Haviland said he miraculously survived what he knew was a suicide mission, making it through his rst day, despite feeling a hail of machine gun re bouncing off his pack. Throughout his years of service — and the completion of all eight campaigns by the 9th Division, including debarking at Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge — Haviland said the key to being a soldier is to take things a day at the time. “You have to focus on what you have to do, not that you might get hurt doing it,” he said. That focus led to Haviland earning numerous commendations and medals, including two Bronze Stars, before being honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant. Haviland also gave some food for thought for those celebrating the upcoming Memorial Day holiday Monday, May 26. “When I came back from the war, my job on the assembly line at the Pontiac plant in Michigan had been given to someone else. He has also gotten several raises in that time,” he said. “The President had (encouraged employers to give those returning from war their old job back at their old pay), but they wanted to put me in the press room. I said no thanks. If that’s all the respect they had for a man who came back from serving this country, I wanted no part of it.” Likewise, Haviland says all veterans should have respect. “Those coming home from Vietnam took an awful beating from those who didn’t agree with the war. I didn’t agree with Vietnam, but those guys didn’t ask to be drafted, and war is a tough thing. We owe those guys a thanks, and we should remember all who sacriced on Memorial Day. To quote a famous general, there is no such thing as a good war or a bad peace.” HONOR from page A1 general. “Fire inspections identify and correct hazards that may exist,” said Dixon. “It’s our desire to reduce re risks due to con formance with re codes and increase public awareness of risks (through) con sistency of enforcement and safety...” Dixon tasked commissioners with correcting the issues, and the board is expected to take action when they meet again in regular session at 9 a.m. Thurs day, May 29. That is, fruitful to schools not from the Panhandle. Trent Johnson had 10 strikeouts in a two-hitter and started a fth-inning rally with a single, as Williston defeated Chipley 4-0 for the Class 1A state baseball title at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. The Tigers nished 23-8 and short in their bid for a rst state title in baseball. Williston, about 30 minutes southwest of Gainesville, nished 25-4 and won its rst title since 1923. Chipley matched Holmes County as state runner-up in the three seasons of the new 1A classi cation created to give smaller schools a better opportunity. The area has seen Rural titles in all other sports, boys and girls basketball, volleyball and softball, but none so far in baseball. The Tigers squandered their best chance in the fourth when Daniel Floyd singled, Williston committed one of its two errors and Logan Justice drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Johnson (10-2) stiffened and induced a y out by Andrew King for the rst out. Colby Wiggins opened the next atbat with two quick strikes but worked the count full. Wiggins started to trot to rst base when the umpire made a late call for the third strike. Nolan Spencer struck out on a 2-2 pitch to end the inning. Williston broke through in the fth against three Chipley pitchers. Starting and losing pitcher Jordan Finch (6-3) exited after a Haydn Cano bunt single to lead off the frame. Cameron Coffey singled off reliever Shelby Savell, who was then replaced by Dallas Oliver. An Oliver wild pitch moved runners up to second and third. Johnson singled in the rst two runs of the game on the next at-bat. The Red Devils added two more runs on grounders Savell collected Chipley’s other hit. Justice reached on Johnson’s two walks. Johnson, Coffey and Austin Langworthy each had two hits for Williston. The Red Devils rapped out eight hits with Langworthy’s double the only for extra bases. CECILIA SPEARS | The News The Tigers received a heroes’ welcome from their hometown when they returned home as State Runners-up Wednesday, May 21. The team was led by an escort of several Chipley re trucks, parents and friends as soon as they arrived off of the I-10 off-ramp, leading all the way to the Chipley High School with sirens and horns blaring. Halifax Media Group VERNON — Vernon coach Bobby Johns said Thursday that not all football teams can transition immediate gains in the weight room to the football eld, but that was not the case for the Yellow Jackets. Vernon overcame early mistakes and cruised to a 50-21 victory against an overmatched Freeport team in a spring football classic. Johns said the game was halted with about 6 minutes left when an injured Bulldogs player required medical attention. “We were very physical, I was most pleased with our physicality especially on the offensive and defensive lines and we ran the ball very hard,” Johns said. “We put in a brand new offense out of the shotgun trying to feature quarterback Tristan Porter and receiver Austin Brown. Tonight we ran the ball better than I expected.” Johns said that an interception on Vernon’s opening possession led to a Freeport touchdown, and the Bulldogs scored again in the rst half aided by three personal-foul penalties on the Yellow Jackets. “We were sloppy early, especially on defense,” Johns said. The Yellow Jackets then displayed a number of playmakers as they hope to improve on last year’s 7-4 record. Ryan Malloy and Darrius Peterson each scored two touchdowns, Darrien Peterson scored on a 70-yard run, Jonshae Works had a rushing touchdown and Brown caught a TD pass from Porter. “Freeport is a very young football team with only about three seniors, but they are much improved from last year,” Johns said of the Bulldogs.
