WATERMELONS smaller, but SWEETER

for this year's festival

JAY FELSBERG
Managing Editor
.. : afelsberg@chipleypaper.com
2';.. CHIPLEY The melons were rolling
in literally on Thursday as this
weekend's 54th annual Watermelon
Festival in Chipley drew closer.
Washington County Extension Service
Agronomist Collin Adcock said that
:, 45 entries already had been delivered
N^. on Thursday for today's watermelon
auction.
'There's usually a rush at the last minute,"
Adcock said Thursday morning.
So far the melons are a bit smaller this season
because .:.f the extra rainfall, but word is that they
are sweet and good to eat. The largest melon
entered by 9 a.m. Thursday was 44 pounds,
and Adcock said that while a 60-pound-plus
rrel.:n could be turned in before the auction
ca 12:30 p.m. Saturday, smaller melons
offered an advantage.
"You can actually eat them,"
Adcock said. "The huge ones are
really not very good to eat."
Bigger melons are often turned
in as late as possible so they can
remain in the field as long as
possible to gain every bit more of
size that could make for a winner
Saturday. The largest melons get
B :,. prizes for the growers.
The melon auction, conducted by
well-known local auctioneer David
Corbin, is a major fundraiser for
the annual Watermelon Festival,
said Festival Chairman Colby
Peel. Better-than-usual response is
expected this year as it is an election
year, and political candidates usually
S strongly support the auction.

JAY FELSBERG I Washington CountyNews
ABOVE: Early entries for today's watermelon
.:uc o, already totaled 45 melons by Thursday
morning.

CRA plans

alleyway

revitalization

project

JAY FELSBERG
Managing Editor
afelsberg@chipleypaper.com
CHIPLEY The Chipley
Community Redevelopment
Agency is looking at a new
approach at revitalization
- alleyways. There was
wide-ranging discussion of
the subject at Wednesday's
regular meeting at the Wash-
ington County Chamber of
Commerce.
The concept is to provide
grant funding to turn alley-
ways into yet another attrac-
tion for downtown Chipley.
The initial project could be
the alleyway on South Rail-
road Avenue between State
Road 77 (Main Street) and
5th Avenue. Ideas considered
included lighting, cobblestone
walkways, planters with drip-
system irrigation and murals
of historic Chipley.
As the alleyway would
become a public walkway, it
would be eligible for a CRA
facade grant to fund renova-
tions. Such a project would be
done in multiple phrases.
The CRA board also ap-
proved the warranty deed to
transfer the Sangree park-
ing lot at the corner of State
77 and U.S. Highway 90 to
the City of Chipley, and ap-
proved funding the striping
of the parking lot. The CRA
purchased the lot and turned
it over to the city to ensure
downtown parking.
The board also tabled
three requests for facade
grants to improve the exte-
rior of buildings from Sassy
Scissors at 705 7th St., the
owners of Sapp Jewelers at
845 Main St., and the Salva-
tion Army store at 841 Main
St. The three projects for a
total of $30,000 were tabled so
that more details of the proj-
ects could be obtained from
the applicants.
There was a great deal of
spirited discussion about the
three projects and the appli-
cation process, ending with
a decision to use a checklist
to make sure each applicant
understands the application
process and the options avail-
able.

Labonte ends TRG deal

Bobby Labonte, the 2000
Sprint Cup Series Champion,
bnmiri his deal with TRG
Motorsports.
Due to sponsorship issues,
TRG Motorsports was look-
ingtobecomea start-and-park
operation, which was some-
thing Labonte could not han-
dle atthispointinhiscareer.
"I just don't want to do it,"
Labonte said. "I don't want to
do the start-and-parkthing."
Labonte will drive Robby
Gordon's No. 7 car this week-
end at New Hampshire, and
then move into James Finch's

No. 09 for Daytona and
Chicagoland, with the possi-
bility of more starts in the
Phoenix Racing vehicle if
sponsorship canbe found.
Labonte started 23 Sprint
Cup events for owner Kevin
Buckler's TRG organization
dating to late last season, but
hasbeenunabletocrackthetop
20 this year and has dropped
out of four recent races with
mechanical trouble. At the
idea of becoming a start-and-
park driver, the 21-time race
winner on the Cup circuit dis-
agreed.

LaJoie suspended for bad test

Randy LaJoie, a crew
member for the No. 18 team in
the Nationwide Series, has
been indefinitely suspended
from NASCAR for violating
the sanctioning body's sub-
stance abuse policy.
On June 11, LaJoie was
found to violated the
NASCAR substance abuse
policy..
LaJoie, who works as a
spotter for the team, won the
1996 and '97 then-Busch
Series championships as a
driver. He made 350 starts in
the series between 1986 and
2006. He also made 44 starts
in the Cup Series and seven in
the Truck Series.
Appearing on Sirius
Speedway on Tuesday, LaJoie
said that he took a drug test on
June 3 in order to secure a
spotter's license. The test
"indicated residue of marijua-

na," he said.
"The use of marijuana was
an isolated incident" following
the Sprint Cup Series race at
Charlotte in May, LaJoie said.
"I take full responsibility for
my actions and I respect
NASCAR's decision," he said.
"I wish to apologize to my
wife and family first, to
NASCAR, to my fans and to
the various media companies
which I work for, including
ESPN, Sirius Radio and
Performance Racing
Network.
"I plan to follow the rec-
ommendations of the sub-
stance abuse counselor and
suggestions of NASCAR and
hope that someday I can prove
to NASCAR and all the peo-
ple with whom I associate that
I have taken such steps to see
that instances such as this do
not reoccur."
