VERNON ELEMENTARY FIELD DAYS

May 6 and 7 found
students at Vernon
Elementary School giving
their all while competing
in the many competitions
being held during the
school's field days.
P.E. coaches and staff
worked hard planning
this two-day event. Many
volunteers also helped
to make these two days
a success. Students had
the opportunity to climb a
rock wall and along with
several relay races, there
were other events such as
tug of war, a three-legged
race, an egg and spoon,
egg toss and balloon sit.

The RMS Beginner Band entertains the crowd.

The bands at Roulhac Middle School
presented their Spring Concert on Tuiesday,
May 11 in the RMS Auditorium. The packed
house full of family members and support-
ers were treated to a great concert present-
ed by the school's two bands.
On stage first was the 46-member Be-
ginner Band, comprised of Sixth Grade stu-
dents who have completed their first eight
months of training on their instruments.
They performed a variety of tunes and
styles ranging from classical themes to rock
arrangements. RMS Band Director Rich-
ard Davenport presented awards to some of
these students for their progress. The most
improved musician awards went to Sixth
Graders Caleb Rogers and Dakota Fran-
cis. Beginner band outstanding musician
awards were presented to Trenton Brock
and Colby Williams. The recipient of the
beginner band most valuable player award
went to Euphonium player Daniel Floyd.
The RMS Concert Band then took the
stage to continue the concert. This ensem-

ble, is made up of 55 Seventh and Eighth
Grade musicians, delighted the audience
with difficult, but entertaining pieces includ-
ing a suite of John Williams movie themes
and a medley of Western themes.
Awards were also presented to members
of this group: most improved musicians Ka-
cie Crews and Jacob Moore from the Sev-
enth Grade; and most improved Eighth
Grader, Tyler Roberts; outstanding musi-
cians were Seventh Grader, Josh Chambliss
and Eighth Graders, Cary Laird, Chase Dal-
ton and Daniel Lane; most valuable player
awards were presented to Eighth Graders
David King and Richard Wayne Davenport.
It was also announced that the members
of the Concert Band that earned straight
Superior ratings at District Assessment
back in March would be presented with
their medals at the RMS Awards Day in
June.
Davenport also thanked those in atten-
dance for their support of the RMS Band
this year, which has been a great one.

WALTERS from poae Al

address came bas as unde-
liverable, Wilson said, be-
cause Walters apparently
gets his mail at a post office
box. "The judge continued
the case to give him the op-
portunity to respond at the
next arraignment." Walters'
arraignment is now sched-
uled for June 7 at 8:30 a.m.
According to the com-
plaint, Walters used
OHSWCD's consumer ex-
emption certificate that pro-
vided exemption from sales
taxes from February to May
2008 to purchase materials at
a local building supply house
for a lake house being built
by Ward Griffin Godfrey, Jr.
Two employees testified to
Koch that Walters used what
is called a consumer exemp-
tion certificate to purchase
supplies at the supply house
without paying sales taxes.
Godfrey told the investi-
gator that Walters agreed to
pay the sales tax prior to in-
voking his Fifth Amendment
rights.
According to the com-
plaint, Walters told the in-
vestigator that he created an

account at the supply house
for the building project, and
that he authorized use of
the sales tax exemption to
purchase building materi-
als. According to the com-
plaint, Walters said he knew
that use of the certificate to
purchase materials for the
lake house was improper,
"but that his calling is help-
ing people and he did it to
make his job easier and not
to break any laws." The com-
plaint also notes that prior to
authorization for use of the
exemption Godfrey donated
$7,500 to the former Take
Stock in Children organiza-
tion that Walters was collect-
ing donations for.
According to the com-
plaint, Walters purchased
a total of $27,557.97 worth
of building materials ex-
empt from sales tax using
the OHSWCD exemption.
Sales tax of $1,649.06 should
have been paid for these
purchases according to the
complaint.
Walters said he could not
comment on the complaint
when contacted Wednesday.

Vickers is side

Sprint Cup driver Brian
Vickers is expected to miss at
least three n inl.ths *,i!iL: under-
going treatment for blood clots,
a source close to the situation
told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
Red Bull Racing officials
said they continue to wait for
fmal recommendations from
doctors and that details of
Vickers' prognosis will be
announced on Friday at
Charlotte Motor Speedway,
where the 26-year-old driver
and general manager Jay Frye
will appear at a news confer-
ence.
Casey Mears replaced
Vickers last weekend at Dover
International Speedway and
finished 22nd. Mears again will
drive the #83 in Saturday
night's All-Star Race after Red
Bull requested a driver change
on Wednesday.
Vickers' former boss, Rick
Hendrick, said Wednesday on

lined

his Amp Energy video confer-
ence that he has spoken to
Vickers. "We are good friends
and I actually hooked him up
with my doctor," Hendrick said
on the chat. "He's doing well.
They have to be careful. When
you're dealing with blood clots
you have to be extremely care-
ful."
Team officials have not used
a specific medical term in
defining Vickers' condition. Dr.
Victor Tapson, an associate pro-
fessor for the division of pul-
monary medicine at Duke
University and co-chair of the
Council for Leadership on
Thrombosis Awareness and
Management, and two other
doctors said Vickers' symptoms
are a sign of deep vein throm-
bosis with a pulmonary
embolism. Tapson, who is not
treating Vickers, described the
driver's condition as life-threat-
ening.

Mayfield suit dismissed

A federal judge on Tuesday
dismissed Jeremy Mayfield's
lawsuit against NASCAR, a rul-
ing that presumably ends the
yearlong saga surrounding the
first Sprint Cup driver suspend-
ed for failing a random drug test.
U.S. District Judge Graham
Mullen in Charlotte, N.C., ruled
that Mayfield had twice waived
his rights to pursue any claims
against NASCAR when he
signed documents both as a driv-
er and as an owner to participate
in the stock car series.
"Plaintiffs thereby waived
their right to pursue their claims
for defamation, unfair and
deceptive trade practices, breach
of contract, and negligence,"

Mullen wrote in his decision.
"Plaintiffs' claims are hereby dis-
missedI
"The U.S. District Court's
ruling is a powerful acknowl-
edgement and affiunation of
NASCAR's rulebook and its
ability to police the sport,"
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey
Poston said in a statement.
"NASCAR has been very clear
with its competitors as to its poli-
cies and what is expected of
them."
Mayfield's wife, Shana, said
the couple had no comment on
the ruling, which can be
appealed only after NASCAR's
suit against Mayfield is
resolved..
