on Friday

JAY FELSBERG
Managing Editor
afelsberg@chipleypaper.com
CHIPLEY The area was
preparing for the possibility
of snow as a winter weather
advisory for snow was set
Thursday afternoon by the
National Weather Service in
Tallahassee. While little snow
was expected in Washing-
ton County, local emergency
services were urging drivers
to take care as ice formed
on roads, bridges and over-
passes.
"North of Interstate 10
should got some snow," said
Lynne Dorch of the Washing-
ton County Emergency Op-
erations Center, who had just
left a conference call with the
National Weather Service in
Tallahassee at about 2:30 p.m.
Thursday.
"The heaviest precipita-
tion is .expected between
9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday. A
winter warning means we
should get a mix of rain and
, snow but little or no accumula-
tion except on grassy areas or
bridges or overpasses, and just
a little under an inch overall.
"However tomorrow night
the extremely cold tempera-
tures could cause freezing, and
motorists are urged to use ex-
treme caution if they are driv-
ing."
Holmes County closed
schools for Friday as snow was
expected to fall, especially in
the northern part of the coun-
ty. Snow was considered a cer-
tainty by weather forecasters
in lower Alabama.
The advisory was in effect
until 6 p.m. Friday with rain
expected to develop around
midnight Thursday and turn-
ing into sleet Friday morning.
Snow was expected to mix with
sleet early Friday morning
and possibly turn to all snow
by Friday midday. Rain and
show was expected to end by
Friday afternoon.

Special to the News

CHIPLEY -- W Charlene
Ammons, nee Wendy Bax-
ter, was guest speaker at the
Feb. 4 luncheon meeting of
Friends of the Washington
County Library. She is au-
thor of "The Plan," a book
she says is not for the faint
of heart.
Wendy wrote her first
book during her senior year
at Florida State University.
It is centered on a fictional
town named Omega, Ala.
To become acquainted with
Omega, she suggests you
picture yourself "taking a
ride in an old pickup truck
down bumpy, dusty dirt
roads as you gaze at the roll-
ing farm land that makes up
northern Jackson County."
Her imaginary town has old
streets, stores and restau-
rants similar to those seen
in Eufala, Ala.
Wendy attended Chipola
College in Jackson County
after graduating from Chi-
pley High ,School in 1995.
She says she has happy
memories of that area so
she based her "distinctly
southern town" on it.
Why is the book recom-
mended for those who have
a strong heart? Well, she
says, it deals with idola-
try, adultery, religion, race,
the class system and child
abuse/incest. There also are
ghost stories, legends and a
love triangle. She credits her
husband, Brian Ammons,
and CHS twelfth-grade Eng-
lish teacher Luwanna Locke
for encouraging her to write
and publish "The Plan."
Although the book is a
work of fiction, Wendy says
sub-plots are based on Jack-
son County legends she
learned. from her father,
Robert Baxter. They include
the Bellamy Bridge Ghost
and the Torture of John
Henry. Robert Baxter was
Chief of Police in Chipley
during the late 1970s and
early 80s. Wendy admits to
being a daddy's girl and says
that played a big part in her
chosen career path.
She studied criminology
at FSU where she received a
Bachelors Degree. She has
been employed in a variety
of jobs ranging from drug

Plans for new

Sunny Hills fire

station under way

CECILIA SPEARS
StaffWritel
cspears@chipleypaper.com
CHIPLEY Washington County Board of
County Commissioners set plans in motion to
build a new Sunny Hills fire station and MSBU
building on county owned lots behind the for-
mer fire station. The decision was made. dur-
ing a special called workshop Tuesday after-
noon.
"Those lots were researched and it was
confirmed they are county owned without en-
cumbrances," County Attorney Gerald Holley
said.
In order to proceed with these plans, a site
plan is to be drawn up and presented for re-
.view by Friday morning's special called meet-
ing so that it can be submitted to Deltona to
get the necessary procedures under way to
start the building process.
The new fire service, Washington County
Fire Department Sunny Hills District, has been
operating out of a private building since it was
awarded the contract to deliver fire service in
the Sunny Hills district on Oct. 22, 2009.
The BOCC is involved in litigation with the
former fire service, Sunny Hills Volunteer Fire
Department, Inc., about equipment and other
issues. SHVFD holds the deed to the former
fire station.
