WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE I Special the The News
Chipley Fire and Rescue put out the fire started by John Taylor. Below, law enforcement
sealed off the scene of three deaths by gunshot at Spanish Trail Park east of Chipley.

dock is still a
puzzled man.
The sheriff and
his investiga-
tors know what
happened when
three people,
died Tuesday
afternoon at
JOHN Spanish Trail
TURNER JR. Trailer Park
east of Chipley.
The problem is they don't know
why everything happened.
The afternoon was shat-
tered when John Henry Turn-
er Jr., 47, killed his girlfriend,
Roselyn Jackson, 50, and
neighbor, Step!anie Hysmith,
19 with a shotgun. Turner also
shot up his television and a
pickup truck and then turried
the pump-action Mossberg 835
on himself.'
Turner had talked about
taking his own life and had
purchased the weapon, from
a private individual, Haddock
said. His lawn care business
was not doing well and friends
were having to cheer him up
during down moments. Inves-
tigators are checking to see
if there is any background of
mental health issues and if
Turner had any contact with
any other agency.

QUOTES ON THE CASE
"He (John Turner) moved down here, to a county
that didn't have very much of an employment rate, but
was doing the best he could with what he had.
"I know that's why he shot the truck, because it was'
broken and couldn't get him to his next job. And that's
why he shot Crystal's mom, because anguish overtook
him, the Devil got into him and in sorrow for not being
able to protect the woman he loved; he shot her."
Alphonso Wiley

"Stephanie was a joy in the classroom and in life.
May she now join her mother and rest in peace in
heaven. What a shame this person who killed her
didn't get the help it sounds like he needed."

'NO REASON' from page Al

I have lived in'
Washington County for
a very long time and for
one reason or another
I have had to live in
other places for short
times. It was always
nice to get back home. I
believe that we have a
very progressive county
government and a number
of civic organizations
that are truly interested
in the overall welfare
of the citizens. I live
here because I like the
environment and am well
pleased at the progress
that has, and is, being
made in the business
community.
I also have occasion to
eat out frequently and have
been in some very good
restaurants that seem to
have a thriving business
even though they don't
serve alcoholic beverages.
Yes, I oppose the sale of
alcoholic beverages from
a moral standpoint. I
believe each family should
have the opportunity t6o
rear their family in a quiet
surrounding where they
are exposed to the least
amount of unhealthy
temptations. As I look in
the nearby wet counties,
I really don't see any
outstanding restaurants.
We continue to enjoy
the freedom of speech
and press in our country
today and I certainly
agree with this. It is one
thing that is important in
keeping a good healthy
government. Therefore, I
feel that I would be remiss
if I failed to offer my
opposing opinion. I have,
at the time ot this writing,
just finished watching
the President sign a bill
putting extremely harsh
guidelines on tobacco
products. I am not
criticizing this act. Maybe
it is good or maybe not,
but I have yet to listen
to the ten o'clock news
or read in the daily news
paper where there was
a fatal accident, believed
to be caused by tobacco
products. Personally, I
don't use tobacco in any
form. Others do and that is
their privilege.
I have also just finished
watching a news report
telling how great an
economy we could be
enjoying in Washington
County if our businesses
were allowed to sell all
kinds of alcoholic drinks.
Here again, I don't use
it in any form. If you do
that is certainly your
choice. However, I ask
you the question, "How
many times have you
read or heard about a
fatal accident when the
last comments were, "We
believe it was alcohol
related?" Granted this is
not always true, but many,
many times it is. I also
saw what was broadcast
as "breaking news,"
telling about a drug bust.
They reported how many
pounds of marijuana or
other types of drugs were
recovered. Both drugs
and alcohol are mind-
altering substances. It is
just as easy to overdose
on alcohol as it is on any
of the other substances
mentioned. Lets call it
what it is; a Drug. This is
why we need to get them
removed from the streets.
I believe that this is a
worthy cause since many
promising young people
have lost a career or even
their lives because they
became addicted to some
of these substances. And
yes, I know it is impossible
to completely remove all
of these from our county.
My point is, the easier it is
to come by the more it will
be put to use. Personally,
I don't see the counties
where alcohol is sold
racking in all the gold.
However, it is my belief
that we need to take a
long hard look at whether

we should bring alcohol
into this county and not
just from the standpoint
of business. It needs to
be looked at from the

standpoint of the loss of
life and the destruction of
property, as well as, the
added expense of policing
the area and the effect it
will ultimately have on
many homes. If a person
is able to walk around the
corner to gamble or buy
alcohol, they are certainly
more likely to do so than
if they have to travel a
distance to get it.
When asked if I
had seen the poles
that indicated an
overwhelming desire
for the county to go wet,
at that time I had not.
However, poles are very
misleading and can be
used to support ones
personal agenda. In short,
they are best used for
propaganda purposes.
May I urge you to take
a serious look at every
aspect of this issue, not
just the financial end,
before you make up your
mind.

back of the trailer park on

"Then he got into a fuss
with his girlfriend with her
grandchildren present,"
Haddock said. "She told
them to go into the yard
and they heard shots and
a scream and took off to a
neighbor."
Taylor then shot and
killed Hysmith, who had
apparently just made a
sandwich and was watch-
ing a movie when the com-
motion brought her to the
door of her trailer. She was
killed by a single shot.
. "We can't figure out why
he went next door," Had-
dock said. "There's no rea-
son." Haddock said rumors
of a "lover's quarrel" of
some sort were completely
unfounded.
Once Turner shot Hy-

Angela Roberts attends

Premiere Orlando Hair Show
Angela Roberts, owner of Angela Roberts
Hair Design in Vernon, recently attended the
Premiere Orlando Hair Show. During the
two-day event, she worked with well-known
stylist Sandra Yu. "These hair show events
allow access to well-known hairstylists and
provide an opportunity to see what's hap-
pening and hot in the beauty industry," said
Roberts.

CHIPLEY Free child
safety seat inspections will
be by appointment only at the
Chipley Police Department.
Officer Richard Heming, of
the Chipley Police Depart-
ment, recently attended train-
ing through Safe Kids USA
and is a nationally certified
child passenger safety techni-
cian.
Each year, an estimated
975 child occupants younger
than 14 years of age die as

a result of a motor vehicle
incident. Young children re-
strained in child safety seats
have an 80 percent lower risk
of fatal injury than those who
are unrestrained.
CPS Technicians put their
knowledge to work through
a variety of activities, includ-
ing child safety seat checks,
where parents and caregivers
receive education and hands-
on assistance with the proper
use of child restraint systems

and safety belts.
Motor vehicle crashes are
the leading cause of death
among children ages 2 to 14,
due in large part to the non-
use or improper use of child
seats and seat belts.
Parents are reminded this
program is for education, not
for law enforcement.
"We want parents or
caregivers to be able to
come to the Chipley Police
Department to make sure

their restraint systems are
installed correctly without
worrying about getting a
citation or having to pay a
fine," Heming. said. There
will be no fees or fines for
this service, and it will be
provided to any individual in
our area wanting to have the
check done.
For more information or
to make an appointment, call
Heming at the Chipley Police
Department at 638-6310.

Mayfield gets
NASCAR on Wednesday
asked an appeals court to ban
Jeremy Mayfield from racing,
alleging the
participation of
"a proven
methampheta-
mine user"
could lead to
fatal conse-
quences for
other competi-
tors and fans.
NASCAR Mayfield
has asked the
4th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals to overturn U.S. District
Court Judge Graham Mullen's
decision last week to lift
Mayfield's indefinite suspension
following a positive drug test.
Mayfield's attorney John
Buric scoffed at the idea
Mayfield is a pot fential danger

tested twice
and revealed the driver was test-
ed twice Monday once at an
independent laboratory and once
at his home by NASCAR.
"He's not a danger, and they
have the right to test him anytime
to find that out," Buric said. "In
fact, they did test him on
Monday night at his home. A
group of people went to his
home and watched him pee in a
cup. It was humiliating."
Mayfield was suspended
May 9 for failing a random drug
test eight days earlier. NASCAR
has said he tested positive for
methamphetamine, but
Mayfield has denied using the
illegal drug.
NASCAR's appeal did not
mention random test, but
spokesman Ramsey Poston con-
firmed Mayfield was tested
Monday evening.

Truex will join Waltrip Racing in '10

Tuesday at Michael
Waltrip Racing headquarters,
Martin Truex finally got the
opportunity to make the offi-
cial announcement of his
move to MWR under a multi-
year agreement with the
Toyota team, the specific
terms of which were not dis-
closed.
"I'm excited," said Tiuex,
who will drive the No. 56
NAPA Camry next season as
team owner Michael Waltrip
scales back to an abbreviated

Concurrent with the Truex
announcement, NAPA con-
firmed a multi-year extension
of its sponsorship agreement
with MWR. NAPA also will
sponsor Waltrip's car in the
2010 Daytona 500. Beyond
that, Waltrip, 46, a two-rime
SDaytona 500 winner, hasn't
set his schedule for next year
but says he could run as many
as 10-12 races depending on
sponsorship.

NASCAR's Hall of Fame

Now the debate can begin on
By BILL GAMBLING
sports@srpressgazette.com
Who will be in?
Who will be left out?
NASCAR will induct it's first Hall of Fame Class in 2010 and
the list of possible names to be considered is a virtual 'who's who'
in stock car racing.
In the first class nominated are Bobby Allison, Buck Baker,
Red Byron, Richard Childress, Dale Earnhardt, Richie Evans,
Tim Flock, Bill France Jr., William H.G. France, Rick Hendrick,
Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Bud Moore, Raymond Parks, Benny
Parsons, David Pearson, Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Glenn
"Fireball" Roberts, Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner, Darrell Waltrip,
Joe Weatherly, Glen Wood, and Cale Yarborough,
The question is who will be in the
first class based onthe following for-
mat.
We know the25 candidates the
first class will be chooscn from,
but picking five from this giooup
would be an excellent starting
point.
Most are agreeing on I
Richard Petty, the ffiii se\en-
time Sprint Cup Seriel
Champion as well as Bill
France, Sr., the founder of f
NASCAR, and the late
Dale Earnhardt Sr., ,
also a seven-time
champion in the
series.
After that the
debate begins.
Some of the debate
centers on Cale
Yarborough who was
the first driver to win
titles in three consecu-
tive years (1976-197S i
and during the domi-
nance he won 28 races
He also is a three-tiire ch-tmpi-
onship runner-up.
Darrell Waltrip is a three time
champion and is known more for
his wars on the track with Eamhardt
Sr., despite winning 12 races in his champi-
onship season of 1982.
Another argument could be made for David Pearson, known
as the "Silver Fox" If Pearson showed up at the track, he usual-
ly won.

Now we have a format to start our debate.
The yearly HOF classes will have five inductees selected by a
votingpanel consisting ofNASCARindustry leaders, manufactur-
er representatives, former competitors, the media and fans.
To be eligible, former drivers must have competed 10 years in
NASCAR and be retired from racingfor a minimum of three years.
