and Nichole Lewis.
Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church was es-
tablished in 1907 when God moved in the hearts of
a few men and women impressing them to organize
the church on a "SURE" foundation.
Their first worship service was held in the Odd
Fellows Hall, located near the first church, north
of the present location.
Construction of the present temple began in
1909 and was given the name of Jerusalem by
a group of men working on the church, while
singing songs and hymns. The one song that was
most pleasing to all was "Jerusalem, My Happy

A day-long service conducted Sunday, July
15, at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in
Chipley, commemorated the congregation's 100th
year as a Christian lighthouse in this community.
The theme for this mammoth occasion of praise
was, "We Rejoice, We Celebrate!"
Celebration was the order of the day beginning
with a Prayer Breakfast at 7 a.m. with an hour-long
worship service concluding with a bountiful and
nutritious early-morning meal.
The Rev. Price Wilson, pastor of Jerusalem
Baptist Church, was the speaker for that beginning
service. He was assisted by Minister Patrick Lewis

With one month until school
starts, Washington County School
District still has about 14 teaching
positions open. Officials aren't
concerned yet.
"The number changes almost
daily," said Jayne Peel, assistant
superintendent. "We've probably
hired 25-30 teachers already."
Washington County is not alone
in its quest for teachers. Cheryl Et-
ters, information specialist with the
Florida Department of Education,
said 18,000 to 20,000 teachers are
needed for positions statewide.
"The need for teachers stems
from growth, retirement and class
size." Etters was referring to a con-
stitutional amendment that reduces
the number of students in Florida's
classrooms, with limits set by stu-
dent age.
Peel said Washington County
wants to meet class size require-
ments at the classroom level this
year, although it's not until 2008-
2009 that that level of compliance
is required.
Etters explained that in the first
years of the amendment, districts
had to demonstrate the appropriate
student-to-teacher ratio at the dis-
trict level, and this year, compliance
is expected at the school level. Next
year, each classroom must have the
correct student-to-teacher ratio.
Peel and Bill Lee of the District
Central Office have been recruiting
teachers since March.
"We wanted to get the best. We
have employed some very well-
qualified teachers," Peel said. "We
wanted highly qualified teachers
in these positions, not warm bod-
ies."
Teacher recruiting can be chal-
lenging for Florida's small and rural
districts.
"If they are from this area or
married and have a family, they
want to come here," Peel said. "If
they are young and just graduating,
they want to live in cities where
they have a social life."
Washington County's rural way
of life has been a draw, Peel said.
"We have some well-seasoned
teachers who came on board this
year. They like the personal touch

With hurricane season underway, emergency
services throughout the state are making plans
to deal with the effects of these devastating
storms. Washington County is no exception,
and two recent exercises were part of local
preparation.
Emergency planners believe that local busi-
ness should be involved in hurricane prepared-
ness, and the Washington County Chamber of
Commerce is no exception. Chamber repre-
sentatives were part of the recent exercises,
and Lynn Jordan of Washington County EMA
was on hand at Thursday's monthly Chamber
breakfast to explain how business benefits from
emergency preparedness.

The first exercise was May 30-June 1 and was
sponsored by the Florida Department of Emer-
gency Management and the National Weather
Service. This exercise was done by computer

The second exercise was a tabletop exer-
cise at Blue Lake on June 19, as reported in
the Washington County News. One element of
this exercise was how vital information could

be passed from the EOC to citizens, evacuees,
responders and local decision makers.
Jordan said that during an actual activity
alert numerous county leaders are involved
in disaster preparedness. The Chamber is on
hand to represent local business and to ensure
that businesses receive information necessary
to dealing with a natural disaster and to aid in
recovery after the disaster hits. State guidelines
make it essential that small counties are well
prepared.
"Local plans are essential for a return to
normalcy as soon as possible," Jordan said. For
example, quickly reopening roads after a storm
not only helps rescue workers and residents, but
also allows people to shop at. local businesses.

Chipley 9-10 Stars end great season

Chipley's 9 and 10 All-
Stars looked sharp and rep-
resented Chipley well in
the 2007 AAA Dixie Youth
State Tournament held in Se-
bring. The information was
provided in a news release
last week.
Chipley's first game was
Saturday, July 7, against
West Volusia. The defense
held a tight game with out-
fielders Chris Lee and Nick
Ruschmeier making great
catches.
Chipley maintained a 3-2
lead into the bottom of the
sixth but lost out as West
Volusia took last bat and
went ahead 4-3 ending the
game.
On Sunday, Chipley took
on Paxton, District runner-
up. Chipley battled it out
hitting the ball well. Daniel
Floyd and Bradley Hall went
4 for 4 with others placing
nice hits along the way to
win the game 15-12.
Monday Chipley faced
Callaway. After four innings

propriate and fitting song

home,

When will my sorrows
have an end?
And the joys when shall

The present church site
was purchased from the
Washington County School
Board in 1958. The first ser-
vice was held in the newly
constructed edifice the third
Sunday in July 1961. A for-
mal dedication was held in
July 1962.
The Rev. Price Wilson
was chosen as pastor of Je-
rusalem Missionary Baptist
Church on Sunday, Oct. 16,
1977. He continues to serve
the church, along with Rev.
Clevelando Wedderburn as
assistant pastor.
Nine men preceded
Price Wilson in leading the
church. They are the Revs.
George Tymus, John Baker,
H.B. Banks, W.L. Johnson.
Brooks, G.T. Parker, L.C.
Herring, N.B. Blackshear
and L.P. Davis.
When this church was
constituted, it had only one
deacon, Peter Collins. Pres-
ently there are 13 deacons
serving the congregation at
Jerusalem Baptist Church.
A beautiful printed pro-
gram, complete with pictures
of the past, was prepared and
available to worshipers for
this glorious day.
The order of services is
contained in.the colorful,
souvenir-type booklet, as
well as much historical and
statistical data pertaining to
the church. It is a keepsake
within itself.
The sermon for the morn-
ing service was delivered by
the Rev. Derrell Davis Sr.,
pastor of L.P. Davis Me-
morial Evangelical Baptist
Church in St. Petersburg. A
delicious lunch was spread at
the church for all to enjoy.
The afternoon sermon
was conducted by the Rev.
William Harvey, pastor
of Buckhorn Missionary
Church in Marianna.
Throughout the entire
day, numerous other par-
ticipants in special singing,
scripture reading, memori-
als, recognition, word of
appreciation and reflections,
took part in the joyous and
historic event.
Dorothy Lewis Washing-
ton, long-time member at Je-

her parents, Louie Lewis Sr.
and Alma Broxton Lewis,
were members and served in
leadership capacities.

person of the Steering Com-
mittee for the 100th celebra-
tion and spoke on behalf
of her committee with the
following statement regard-
ing Jerusalem Missionary
Baptist Church: "For years
this church has stood as a
sentinel, pointing men and
women, boys and girls, to
the Heavenly Way."
Even in the face of world
turmoil, war and strife and
with the ideals of the world
crumbling, she concluded
with the statement of Christ,
"Upon this rock I build my
church and the gates of hell
shall not prevail against it."
(Matthew 16:18).
Many of the families of
present and former church
members traveled great dis-
tances to attend this memo-
rable tribute to a landmark
location still shining as a
guiding beacon to man-
kind.
Services concluded at
Jerusalem on Sunday with a
"pot luck" supper.
The Rev. Price Wilson
stands as a stalwart in this
community. He is a native
of the Orange Hill area, hav-
ing been born as the third in
a sequence of 11 children,

to Oliver Wilson and Mae
Nona Conley Wilson. He
was reared in the large farm
family.
Price Wilson served in
the U.S. Army for three
years, attaining the rank of
sergeant.
He is a graduate of Roul-
hac High School in Chipley
and holds a master's degree
in education from Florida
A&M University.
In addition to his ministry,
he was a classroom teacher,
a school principal and an
assistant principal in the
Washington County School
System, where he retired
after 30 years service.
Wilson became a licensed
Florida barber early in life
and operated his own barber
business in Chipley for many
years. In "retirement," Price
Wilson continues to serve as
city councilman for the City
of Chipley.
His wife, Kathryn Carolyn
Campbell Wilson, mother of
his children, died in 1994.
In 2003, Wilson married
another long-time Chipley
citizen, Fannie Boston Reed.
She stands by his side and
supports his ministry.
Attending the memorable
day of tribute to Jerusalem
Missionary Baptist Church
were five of Rev. Price Wil-
son children. They are Kathy,
Marion, Carol Lynn, Loretta
and Price Hugh.
Matthew, Chapter 25, 11-
24 will surely convince the
reader that the Rev. Price
Wilson measures up to the
description of the use of
talents as described in the
scripture.
Price Wilson continues to
wear many hats in our com-
munity, and he wears them
all well, thus making him the
valuable and versatile person
that he is to all people.

Hurricanes like Ivan in 2004 destroy everything

Area business owners
are urged to take steps
now so their small busi-

Forty percent of small
businesses that close be-

The first step toward
protecting your business
is to make sure you have
a Business Disaster Plan.
To determine if you are
prepared, ask yourself
these questions:
*What would I do if my
building were damaged or
destroyed?
*What is my company's
back up system for all my
important records?
*Have I reviewed my
insurance policies with
my agent to make sure I
have adequate coverage?

things businesses could do

and Economic Development Council spoke at Ki- Wall present Scout Master David Bradford a check
wanis meeting on economic development impact- to apply toward the purchase of a used enclosed
ing Washington County. trailer for local Boy Scout Troop 39.

Guest speaker at Tues-
day's Chipley Kiwanis
meeting was Ted Everett
of the Washington County
Chamber and Economic
Development Council. He
spoke about things that
are impacting Washington
County and-its economic
development.
Everett discussed the
three Enterprise Zones of the
county, Chipley, Vernon and
Ebro, noting that, from Oc-
tober 2006 through July 11,
2007, the Council has saved
almost $119,000 in taxes
for businesses in these three
zones and almost $2 million
in just over two years.
Everett said that the rea-
son for the increase in the
number of banks doing busi-
ness in Chipley is because
money is coming into the
city via economic growth
- with more to come, as
new businesses in the area
become a reality.
For example, the new
airport in Bay County south
of Ebro will surely bring
even more money, jobs and
growth. Expansion of water

and sewer services in the
Ebro area, Highway 79 and
Highway 20, would surely
result in economic growth.
If a 30,000 to 50,000 square
foot building becomes avail-
able to house a new manu-
facturing facility, more jobs
will be created.
If a rail spur can be con-
structed in one of Chipley's
industrial parks, more jobs
will be created---big time.
Everett said that people
will know details in a cou-
ple of months about a new
business endeavor planned
for the former Winn Di-
xie building that will cre-
ate jobs. Actually, three
businesses may be involved
in that project.
Comments from the au-
dience voiced support for a
possible Music In The Park
idea and a Civic Center that
could accommodate events
too large for the Ag Center.
Everett seemed interested in
working with the City and
the County on projects of
that type and remains com-
mitted, ready and able to
support a variety of econom-

ic growth ideas for Wash-
ington County through the
Chamber of Commerce.
Also, during the meet-
ing Dell Corbin and Dar-
rin Wall presented a $500
check to Scout Master Da-
vid Bradford to apply to-

ward the purchase of a used
enclosed trailer for local
Boy Scout Troop 39. With
the recent increase in Troop
39 membership, the trailer is
needed and will be used to
transport equipment and
gear during camping trips.

This keeps hard-working
people from being produc-
tive, Pritchard said.
"Unless determined to
be in a crisis situation, no
consumers were able to
make it off the waiting
list," Pritchard said. Thanks

Free tuition
Chipola College is offering free tuition for a new program
to help college graduates enter the teaching field. Chipola
pays the tuition through a Succeed Florida grant.
The Florida Department of Education in 2006 designated
Chipola as an Educator Preparation Institute (EPI). The
program is designed for college graduates with a bachelor's
degree, in a subject other than education, who want to earn
the credentials to become a Florida certified teacher.
Dr. Kitty Myers, Chipola's vice president of Instruction
and Baccalaureate Programs, says, "This is a wonderful
opportunity for anyone with a bachelor's degree who is
interested in entering the teaching field."
Myers says the course of study offers the required six
to eight classes leading to certification in four areas: math
education, science education, exceptional student educa-
tion and elementary education. A new bachelor's degree in
Applied Business Management begins in January of 2008.
Free tuition may be available to the first 20 applicants. For
information, contact Dr. Myeis at 850-718-2276.
