A 'welcome' addition

JASON MATTHEW WALKERi ,,itA 1I 'P01t,-
The new downtown Lake City sign, seen here at Marion Avenue and U.S. Highway 90, welcomes visitors to the area. The
sign, along with its counterpart on the north end of downtown Lake City,.cost approximately $20,000.

Signage up in time for July 4 festivities

"V visitorss to Lake City have,
a couple of new signs
welcoming them to the
downtown area.
Lake City's new wel-
come signs, which were installed on
Thursday and Friday on the north
and south sides of downtown along
Marion Avenue, are up just.in time
for the busy Fourth of July weekend,
when the area is expected to see an

influx of visitors for the city's
fireworks display.
"They're not completed as far as.'
landscaping and lighting, but tem-
porarv landscaping will go in for the.
Fourth of July weekend., and lighting
and permanent landscaping will be
put in after that." said Downtown
Redevelopment Manager Jackie
Kite. "They're gorgeous signs,
absolutely beautiful. I think they've
turned out well, and people who
have commented on them to me said
they fit well in downtown."

.The $20,000 project came about
fo11.owing the continued deteriora-
tion of the old welcome signs. The
sign on the south side of downtown
was torn down last year because of
its declining condition, but by then a
plan was already in mind to replace
the signs with updated ones. Kite
said the city began seeking design
conceptions last September, and
after several months in the design
stage, bids went out in January

A woman was taken to an area hospital following a two car
crash on Main Boulevard Monday afternoon. The crash
occurred near Long Street a few minutes after 5 p.m. The
extent of the woman's injuries was unknown Monday night,
and no further information was available.

Crash slows 1-75 traffic
Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Pace (left) and Trooper
Mark Birchard inspect a Mercedes Benz box truck that
crashed on northbound Interstate 75 Monday evening at
approximately 6:57 p.m., just north of mile marker 428. No
further details were available Monday night.

Baseball calls for 'Who's on first?'

It has been a long time,
if even, when I have
given an entire column to
'humor.' There comes a
time when it is altogether
proper and wonderful to reflect
on two of the greatest comics
in history, Bud Abbot and Lou
Costello and their baseball his-
tory routine.
Since they lived and per-
formed years before many of
you were born, you may find it
a 'drag' being unable to picture
their radio broadcast of "Who's
on First." Let's try it anyway.
BUD: Strange as it may seem,
they give baseball players pecu-
liar names nowadays. On the
St. Louis Team "Who's" on first,
"What's" on second, and "I don't
know" is on third.
LOU: That's what I want to
find out. I want you to tell me
the names of the St Louis team.
BUD: I'm telling you. Who's
on first, what's on second and
I don't know is on third. LOU:
You know the fellows' names?
BUD: Yes. LOU: I mean the
fellow's name on first base.
BUD: Who. LOU: Who? BUD:
The fellow's name on first base
for St Louis. LOU: Who?
BUD: The guy on first base.
LOU: Well, what are you asking
me for? BUD: I'm not asking
you, I'm telling you, who is on
first That's the man's name.
LOU: That's who's name. BUD:
Yes. LOU: Well go ahead and
tell me. BUD: Who? LOU: The
guy on first. BUD: Who. LOU:
The first baseman. BUD: Who
is on first LOU: (trying to stay
calm) Have you got a first base-
man on first? BUD: Certainly.
LOU: Well, all I'm trying to
find out is what the' guy's name
on first base. BUD: Oh, no, no,
what is on second base. LOU:
I'm not asking you who's on sec-
ond. BUD: Who's on first. LOU:
That's what I'm trying to find
out. BUD: Well, don't change
the players around. LOU:
(starting to get angry) I'm not
changing' anybody. BUD: Now
take it easy. LOU: What's the
guy's name on first base? BUD:
What's the guy's name on sec-
ond base. LOU: I'm not asking
who's on second. BUD: Who's

on first. LOU: I don't know.
BUD: He's on third. We're not
talking about him. LOU: (beg-
ging) Howcould I get on third
base? BUD: You mentioned
his name. LOU: If I mentioned
the third baseman's name,,who
did I say is playing third? BUD:
(Starting all over again) No,
who's playing first.
LOU: Stay off of first, will
ya? BUD: Now what is it you'd
like to know. LOU: What's the
fellow's name on third base.
BUD: What's the fellow's name
on second base. LOU: I'm not
asking ya who's on second.
BUD: Who's on first. LOU: I
don't know. BUD AND LOU
TOGETHER: Third base.
LOU: (tries again) You got
an outfield? BUD: Oh, abso-
lutely. LOU: The left fielder's
name? BUD: Why. LOU: I don't
know, I just thought I'd ask.
BUD: Well, I just thought I'd
tell you. LOU: Then tell me,
who's playing left field? BUD:
Who's playing first LOU: Stay
outta the infield. BUD: Don't
mention any names there. LOU:
(firmly) I want to know what's
the fellow's name in left field.
BUD: What is on second. LOU:
I'm not asking you who's on
second. BUD: Who's on first.
LOU: I don't know. What's the
left fielder's name? BUD: Why.
LOU: Because. BUD: Oh, he's
in center field.
LOU: Wait a minute. You got
a pitcher on that team? BUD:
Wouldn't this be a fine team
without a pitcher. LOU: I don't
know. Tell me the pitcher's
name. BUD: Tomorrow. LOU:
You don't want to tell me today?
LOU: I'm telling you, man.
LOU: Then go ahead. BUD:
Tomorrow. LOU: What time?

BUD: What time what? LOU:
What time tomorrow are you
gonna tell me who's pitching?
BUD: Now listen, who is not
pitching. Who is on ... LOU:
I'll break your arm if you say
who is on first. BUD: Then why
come up here and ask? LOU: I
want to know what's the pitch-
er's name. BUD: Whafs on sec-
ond? LOU: You gotta catcher?
BUD: Yes. LOU: The catcher's
name. BUD: Today. LOU: Today
and tomorrow's pitching? BUD:
Now you've got it.
LOU: That's all. St Louis got
a couple days on their team.
That's all. BUD: Well, I can't
help that. What do you want
me to do? LOU: Gotta catcher?
BUD: Yes. LOU: I'm a good
catcher, too, you know. BUD: I
know that LOU: I'd like to play
for St. Louis. BUD: Well. I might
arrange that. LOU: I would like
to catch. Now tomorrow's pitch-
ing on the team and I'm catch-
ing. BUD: Yes.
LOU: Tomorrow throws the
ball and the guy up bunts the
ball. BUD: Yes. LOU: So when
he bunts the ball, me being a
good catcher, I want to throw the
guy out at first base. So I pick
up the back and I throw it to
who? BUD: Now thafs the first
.thing'you've said right LOU: I
don't even know what I'm talking
about BUD: Well, thafs all you
have to do. LOU: I throw it to
first base. BUD: Yes. LOU: Now
who's got it? BUD: Naturally.
LQU: I throw the ball to first
base. BUD: Then who gets it
LOU: He'd better get it But the
guy runs to second. BUD: Uh-
uh. Who picks the ball up and
throws it to what, who throws 'it
to I don't know and I don't know
throws it back to tomorrow -a
triple play. BUD: Yeah, could be.
Abbot and Costello's record-
ing of "Who's On First?"
became the first gold record
placed in the Baseball Hall of
Fame in Cooperstown, New
York, believe it or not
