At least five downtown businesses
have been burglarized during the past
week. The rash of burglaries plaguing the

downtown business corridor has result-
ed in a greater police presence in the
area.
"Between U.S. Highway 90 and Railroad
Street is where (burglars) are hitting,"
said Lake City Police Department pub-
lic information officer Lt. Joe Moody.
"They've hit Tucker's (Steak & Seafood)
about three times."

Consulting firm says
city's workers are
loyal and underpaid.
By JEFF M. HARDISON

SA comparative pay analysis
study presented Tuesday night
to the Lake City City Council
reflects generally that munic-
ipal employees are loyal and
underpaid.
SWhile either statement is
not all-encompassing, the pre-
sentation by Brian Wolfe and
Eugene Sherman, of Evergreen
Solutions of Tallahassee, gave
City Council members a wealth *
of information about condi-
tions for the approximately 4
265 employees during the
workshop session.
To overcome a problem with
a pay plan that was last reviewed
in 1994, the consultants created
a complete plan from scratch. A
number of workers had salaries
below the proposed minimum
pay grade. The approximate
cost of this step is $405,860,
according to the report.
A 3 percent increase is also
seen as needed for a market
adjustment for 20 employment
titles for approximately anoth-
er $50,648. Adding another
$61,530 for compensation for
tenure-based salary adjust-
ments brought the need for total
increases to $518,038 in salaries
alone.
. Wolfe and Sherman recom-
mended making these changes
over a three-year period. City
Manager Scott Reynolds said
the first two years of the plan
can be completed in the coming
Uscal year.
The new plan has minimum,
midpoint and maximum sala-
ries for the many class titles of
possible city jobs.
" Evergreen Solutions found
information from 15 similar cit-
ies in Florida in its research
tf determine fair salaries. The
consultants said Lake City is a
progressive city that is in one
of the top small business mar-
kets in the south. It is the "eco-
nomic hub for Columbia County
and North Central Florida,"
Sherman said. The (

Teen arrested after bottle strikes

,vehicle traveling on Interstate 10

By TONY BRITT
tbritt@lakecityreporter.com
A 17-year-old Jacksonville boy was
'arrested Sunday morning for allegedly
,throwing a bottle out the car he was
:traveling ifi and striking two other cars,'
, according, to police reports. ,
The teenager was arrested at 10:25 a.m.
Sunday and booked into the Columbia
County Jail. The youth has been charged
with throwing a deadly missile. The
Florida Highway Patrol, the arresting
agency, is not releasing the boy's name
due to his age.
According to reports, FHP troopers were
I called by motorists traveling westbound on
Interstate 10, who reported a passenger
in a red Ford Taurus had thrown a bottle
N
i -----:------

which struck a Kia and then, struck the
windshield of the motorists' Lexus.
Additional calls were made from the
Lexus' passengers who reported they
were 'being boxed-in by a white Dodge
Durango, a green Volkwagen Jetta and the
red Taurus.
Three FHP troopers stopped the vehicles
near the 1-75 mile marker 433 in Columbia
County where reports say the 17-year-old
said he threw the bottle, but did not intend
for it to hit the Lexus.
The FHP investigation revealed that the
vehicles they had stopped were traveling
together to Ichetucknee Springs.
All occupants were teenagers, and they
were released after authorities received
parental permission. The 17-year-old was
taken to the Columbia County Jail.

FORT WHITE The town of
Fort White earned $35,000 or about
$1,700 per minute for 21 minutes on July 19,
by auctioning its surplus equipment.
Fort White resident and certified
auctioneer Roy Brewer of Brewer Auction
Service organized and advertised the
auction for the town.
Brewer is one of only 1,000 auctioneers
worldwide to be certified by the Certified
Auctioneers Institute (CAI). The profes-
sional designation is awarded to practicing
auctioneers who meet the experimental,
educational and ethical standards set by
the Auction Marketing Institute, Inc.
Brewer has been certified for the past
five years but has been offering his servic-
es gratis to the American Heart Foundation
for the past 27 years, and more recently, to
the American Cancer Society.
Brewer will call the live auction at
Saturday's Cattle Barons Ball in Lake City.
Brewer also holds auctions for the Boy
Scouts of America.
The auction went rather quickly, "but
that's not surprising," said Liz Brewer,
Roy Brewer's wife, noting that her hus-
band was the 2004 State Bid Calling
Champion and is past president of the
Florida Auctioneers Association.
Among the 16 items up for auction were
several rotary mowers,, a garbage truck, a
compact tractor, two farm tractors, a limb
chipper, used edgers and an old grader.
The town no longer needed a road
grader said Public Works Director
*Edmund Hudson.
"About 95 percent of our roads are
paved, and the other 5 percent are
basically covered with grass."
The money generated from the auction
was placed in the town's General Fund,
Mayor Truett George said.
"We will replace a couple of our old golf
carts with some of the money raised by
the auction," George said. "The carts are

"It was equipment that
we no longer use or
needed.We made the
decision to auction the
items about six weeks
ago to give the
auctioneer time to set
up the auction."
Edmund Hudson,
Town of Fort White Public Works Director
a very efficient way for us to do business
in town."
George said the carts are ideal because
they use no fuel, need no insurance or a
license, and they are quiet.
"We can go into neighborhoods at 7 a.m.
to read meters without waking anyone,"
he said.
George said that the Parks and Streets
Department also uses a golf cart to pick
up road debris from roadsides before
mowing.
"It was equipment that we no longer
use or needed," Hudson said. "We made
the decision to auction the items about six
weeks ago to give the auctioneer time to
set up the auction.
"I've been here for 30 years and that's
only about the fourth auction we've held
that I can remember," Hudson said of
Tuesday's event.
'We are very impressed with the Town
of Fort White," Liz Brewer said. "We've
done similar auctions, but Fort White was
extremely organized because of Edmund."
The Brewers also were impressed by the
cleanliness of the items to be auctioned.
"(The town) had all the equipment
cleaned, and that definitely added to the
price Roy was able to get for some of the
items," Liz Brewer said. 'We heard that the
person who bought the old grader was
shipping it to, Mexico, and one gentleman
even drove his tractor home with a big
smile on his face."

Truth Revealed About

Anti-Aging Creams!

DEAR DONNA: I am a "Baby
Boomer" and am noticing
wrinkles around my mouth, lips
and cheeks, which are making
me look older than I am. I also
have very dark circles under
my eyes.' I see so many ads
with model and actresses for
"miracle" creams. Do any really
work?
Confused Boomer, Dallas, TX '
DEAR BOOMER: There ire two
products for your aging skin that
really work. EB5 Facial Cream
was invented by an Oregon
pharmacist, and extensive
clinical tests have proven that
when used twice daily, EB5 does
smooth the appearance of facial
wrinkles, especially "crows'
feet" and those "feather lips"
EB5 contains the same effective
ingredients as
the more expensive creams,
anti-oxidants and hydrators,
which will make your aging
skin almost disappear. And it's

not expensive! In fact, EB5 is
like having 5 creams in one
jar: a Wrinkle Cream, Throat
Cream, Firming Cream, 24-
Hour Moisturizer and Make-
Up Base...all in one. And as for
those puffy, dark-circled eyes,
there is EB5 Eye Gel Formula
that effectively relieves puffiness
and reduces the appearance
of dark circles while firming,
moisturizing dry eye areas. It's
perfect for the older woman
with deep circles or the younger
woman just beginning to notice
symptoms of aging eyes. Note:
All EB5 formulas are available
at JCPenney. To learn more
about EB5 formulas, phone toll
free: 1-800-929-8325 or visit
online at www.eb5.com.

LAKE CITY REPORTER OUTDOORS WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 2008

Anglers

swarm

to state

By BOB WATFENDORF
W ith great
natural
resources
and the
efforts
of the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation
Commission and
responsible anglers,
Florida is home to some
of the highest quality,
most diverse fishing in the
world.
The results are like a
well-chummed fishing hole,
attracting anglers who vote
for their favorite fisheries.
with their best cast and
hard-earned cash.
It has also earned Florida
the title of "Fishing Capital
of the World."
The latest national
statistics showed Florida
has 2.8 million resident
anglers, while annually
attracting 885,000
tourists who fish here.
As a result, Florida's
economy benefits by a
whopping billion dollars
in direct sales. And even
though Texas has more
inland water area
(5,056 square miles vs.
4,672 for Florida) and
people (22.9 million vs.
17.7 million from the
2006 Census data), Florida
has more resident anglers
and more than four times
as many tourist anglers
(885,000) than Texas
(218,000).
With summer vacations
in full swing (or cast, as
the case may be), and gas
prices restricting travel, we
will likely see more anglers
from neighboring states
and those along
the Interstate 10 and
Interstate 95 corridors
coming to wet a line in our
prolific waters. Moreover,
more Floridians are likely
to stay within the state
borders to conserve fuel
and avoid nonresident
fishing license fees.
A resident freshwater or
saltwater license only costs
$17 and is valid for
365 days from date of
purchase. Since the aver-
age number of fishing trips
per angler in 2006 was
17.2 days, with many
fishing trips lasting four
or more hours,
fishing remains an
exceptional recreational
value, even without
catching dinner and
bringing it home.
Florida earned the
title "Fishing Capital of,
the World" by coupling
its great resources with
responsible management
of those resources by the
FWC. Anglers will be ,.
coming in abundance to
test their skills, and we
hope to get them to try
out some new fishing
opportunities.
By targeting a wide
variety of species and
spreading anglers out
across the state rather than
over-fishing historically
publicized locations, we can
lessen the strain on any
specific fishery and help
promote sustainable use.
You can help keep
Florida the fishing capital
by following sound
conservation practices and
encouraging others to do
so as well.
Our Web site at
MyFWC.com and
publications, along with
work we do with the
Recreational Boating
and Fishing Foundation

TakeMeFishing.org, and
VISIT FLORIDA at
VisitFlorida.com, provide
additional information to
help anglers locate new
areas and learn to fish
ethically for a variety of
species.
E Bob Wattendorf
works for the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Commission and writes a
column on a variety of
outdoors issues.
