The symbol for the cele-
bration of Lake City's 150th
anniversary as a city was
unveiled Monday night by
its creator, Duffy Soto.
The branding icon for
Lake City's yearlong sesqui-
centennial celebration was
made official by a unani-
mous City Council vote.
The kickoff event is Jan.
15, 2009, and the year will
include monthly celebra-
tions throughout 2009.
Nick Harwell chaired the
logo subcommittee.
Soto thanked city leaders
for allowing him to explain
the art. He said the piece is
less of a graphic piece than
it is a historic representa-
tion. He made rerfernce to
Hernando DeSoto, who was
a distant relative, having
passed through this part of
Florida when DeSoto went
from what became Tampa
Bay and traveled toward
what is now Tallahassee.
Agriculture, he said, is
the key theme to the his-
toric art. Dark dots making
the border represent burlap
bags that held crops, and
were even used for clothing
by some farmers, Soto said.
The dark brown color sym-
bolizes the good dirt that
bore crops here.
"King among the crops
was tobacco," Soto said.
The texture of tobacco is
seen in the background and

Investigators approach the entrance to Columbia Bank's Turner Road branch at the

believe the bomb threats
were a diversion for the
bank robbery. We are
treating them as related."
The bogus bomb calls
sent an estimated 150
people, mostly employ-
ees and several visitors in
the municipal buildings,
scurrying to the Olustee
Park area. Some people
left the. area while authori-
ties checked the build-
ings, but reports indicate
many stayed in Olustee
Park for more than an hour
before authorities said the
buildings were clear of any
danger.
No explosive devices or
any paraphernalia were
found during the sweep of
the two buildings.
"We asked supervisors
from each department to
walk through with our dep-
uties to ensure there was
nothing suspicious," Gootee
said. "We had mutual aid on
standby, but we did not find
anything suspicious."
The courthouse resumed
normal business by

.-. i .

9:30 a.m.
While Columbia County
Sheriff's Office deputies
were dealing with the bomb
threats, a man walked into
the Columbia Bank branch
and after confronting a tell-
er, made off with an undis-
closed amount of money.
According to authori-
ties, the robber was the
first customer to enter the
bank, had a note which
demanded money and he
indicated he had a gun, the
sheriff said.
No one was injured
during the robbery. The
suspect fled the scene on
foot with an undetermined
amount of cash, running
into a wooded area north of
the bank.
At 10:30 a.m. bank
employees had the doors to
the bank closed with a sign
on the door: "Please visit
one of our other Offices, we
are closed temporarily due
to technical difficulties."
Authorities were able
to determine the bomb
threats originated from a

pay telephone at an S&S
Food Store at U.S. Highway
90 and Pinemount Road -
directly across the street
from Columbia Bank.
Deputies who were near
the bank were dispatched
to the pay telephone, but no
arrests were made.
Columbia County
Sheriff's Office deputies
and detectives responded
to, both calls and estab-
lished a perimeter around
the bank as the suspect was
tracked by Baker County
Correctional Institute
canine units.
Authorities are search-
ing for a white man, in his
late 20s to early 30s, who
is about 6-feet tall with a
medium build. The man
was last seen wearing blue
jeans, brown shoes. and
a navy-colored hooded
sweatshirt. He wore wom-
en's designer sunglasses
on his head. Anyone with
information on the rob-
bery is asked to call Crime
Stoppers of Columbia
County at 754-7099.

MUSICAL:

Set in the Oklahoma ter-
ritory in the early 1900s,
"Oklahoma!" tells the
story of Curly McLain, a
cowboy, and his romance
with Laurey Williams, a
farmer's daughter. Nearly
two dozen songs tell the
story of the play.
"It's really comparable
to what we've done in the
past it's extremely com-
parable to "Cinderella"
(LCCC's 2007 summer
production) but it's a
much bigger show because
this was Rodgers and
Hammerstein's first col-
laboration and the music
just has a much bigger
impact on the audience,"
said musical director Owen
Wingate. "It's a fine, whole-
some, all-American musi-
cal that is really appealing
to this community."
Director Bob Gerard said
the play was suggested by
LCCC President Chuck
Hall as a kickoff for the 60th
anniversary celebration for
the school.
In the play, the charac-
ter Laurey is played by
Live Oak resident Malone
Thomas while Dylan
Gerard portrays the char-
acter Curly. Wingate said
four of the surrounding
counties will be repre-
sented on stage during the
production, and others will
be represented behind the
scenes and in the orches-
tra, which is directed by
Harry Wuest. The chore-
ography for the produc-
tion is put on by Jennifer
Owens, whose Fancy
Dancer students will also
participate. "We've got the
voices and the actors to do
this," Wingate said. "When
you gear up to do these
musicals as you see that
you have the talent."

crops DeSoto mentioned as
growing in Lake City.
The star marks Lake City
in the Columbia County
outline as the focal point of
the county.
'We were, we are, the
center, a focal point, a major
point. People coming and
going," Soto said.
People using the fine
hospitality industry at the
Interstate can testify to
this being the entrance to
Florida, he said.
There are dark spots
at the top and bottom of
the county outline, he
said, which represents the
root and the top, and it
represents the starting and

ending points for travelers
going through the area.
After the presentation,
Soto told the Lake City
Reporter he loves the city,
because it has been a won-
derful place for he and his
family.
"If my great relatives
had any sense they would
have stayed," he said. "If
they had the. opprotunity
to come back, they'd sure
find the hospitality worth
staying for."
Lake City, he said, is a
great place to live, to do
business, and to bring
business.

Linda Catherine Salo
Born: October 26, 1948
ReturnedtoHeaven: May20,2008
The light of Faith, The Warmth
of home, The love of family.
May these be your
gifts at Christmas.
Stay forever young at heart
Holy Spirit, Guide my life
Help me to follow Christ's
example, And word in
all that I say and do.
Linda Salo was born in West
Palm Beach, Fl and resided there
until moving to Ft. white, Fl
in 1985. She loved the country
and animals and moved there to
run a working cattle ranch. She
loved all people and did what she
could to help them, no matter the
circumstances. She never turned
her back on anyone. She also
shared the same care for God's
furry or feathered creatures,
sometimes denying herself to
ensure that the needs of others
be met. She was truly a pure and
selfless person. Why God took her
at such a young age is a mystery
as she had so much more to do.
Linda leaves behind a loving and
grieving husband of 43 years,
Ron, and a daughter, Robyn
Davis of Jacksonville, Fl. she
is also survived by her mother,
Catherine P. Loyal and both of
Lantana,.Fl. In addition she leaves
behind a multitude of friends and
family from around the world.
She leaves everyone in shock and
awe due to her sudden passing.
At an early age she would
always volunteer, and help
people. When Robyn started
kindergarten, Linda volunteered
as a teacher's aide for four
years. When Robyn was nine
years old, Linda and a friends a
4-H club with fifty kids. Linda
converted to Catholicism a few
years after getting married and
she always said it made her
feel proud and fulfilled. When
she moved to ft. White, she
ran the cattle ranch until Ron
could join her permanently. She
also volunteered at a church
run community thrift shop in ft.
White for four years where her
nick name was "Miss Sunshine".
She became the secretary-
treasure of the -Columbia
Southfork Homeowners
Association while also running
the ranch .and tending to her
many pets and animals.
Linda never lied and always
had a smile on her face and a
kind word to say to all. Linda
was one of a kind and will
be sorely missed. I pray that
God has good plans for her.
A memorial date will be
forthcoming and will be
announced at a future date.

Middleton
checkers
at Dillon
Lake City driver
wins second ASA
asphalt event.
By ELGIN TRAYLOR
Special to the reporter
ATHENS, Ga. When
you're hot, you're hot. Jay
Middleton knows that
feeling too well.
A back-up car, a new
racetrack, and hot and
humid conditions on
Saturday night could
not slow the RC Cola/
MoonPie ASA Southeast
Asphalt Tour point
leader at Dillon Motor
Speedway.
Middleton overcame
all the odds at the South
Carolinafacilityto become
the first repeat winner in
series history.
The "SENECA
Tabaccoville USA 100"
was his playground on
Father's Day weekend.
Middleton dedicated the
triumph to his dad Scott
Middleton.
"I am happy and blessed
that I get to be the son who
gets to win ,on Father's
Day,". Middleton said in
victory lane.
Middleton's victory
looked to be a cakewalk,
as he easily pulled away
from Alabama driver John
Bolen early in the race.
Bolen was waiting until
the closing laps to make"
his move before a flat tire
on a restart shuffled him
back.
That brought pole-
sitter Preston Peltier up
to second for the final 40
laps. As the race wound
down, Peltier laid right
behind Middleton's tire
tracks looking for him to
make an error.
Middleton and Peltier
displayed a nose-to-tail
battle lap after lap in
search of the victory. The
two had broken away
from the pack before a
yellow with eight laps.
During the ensuing
restart Peltier spun his
tires, and that enabled
Middleton to move ahead
to the victory.
'They were able to
make a race of it at the
end because the 5 car
(Peltier) was so strong,"
Middleton said. "I can't
say enough about Preston
(Peltier); he's a good
quality racer. He ran me
clean; so one day when
the roles are reversed, I'll
run him clean."
Peltier was happy with
second, but he knew, even
without the late-race cau-
tion, there was not much
he could have done with
Middleton.
"I would have rather
won the thing," said
Peltier, who remains sec-
ond in the national stand-
ings. "This is good for the
team and good for Chevy,
AP and ARP bodies. I
probably wasn't going to
get him. I was putting as
much pressure on him
as I legally could. I did
everything but move him.
I was hoping he would
make a mistake, but he
didn't. He was ice cold."
The victory marks
a hat trick of triumphs
for Mike Cope Racing.
Travis Cope (Mike's son)
won at Senoia Speedway
in Georgia, sandwiched
by Middleton's wins at
i Dillon and Bronson Motor
Speedway.
"For Mike Cope Racing,
this is three in a row,"
said Middleton. "He just
makes my job so easy.
All I had to do was lead

every lap, and I got all the
bonus points we could."
