LAKE BUTLER Lake City rest-
dent Reynolds Marion, inventor and
designer of the Marion Hyper Sub, a
one-of-a-kind hyper-submersible com-
bination power boat (HSPB),
returned recently from a visit with
Special Operations Command
(SOCOM) in Tampa and Special
Warfare Command (SPECWAR)
located in Coronado, Calif., just
across the bay from San Diego.
"What was different about this visit
was that the members of the Special
Warfare Command are end users,"
Marion said. "We were talking direct-
ly to Navy Seals and Riverrines.
"What an elite group of guys we
met there. We were honored to be
speaking to them because they defi-
nitely get it. They understand the
capabilities of the hyper sub," Marion
said.
Marion said three members of his
management team made the trip to
Tampa and California with him.
"Vice Admiral Jim Amerault,

retired; Dave Smith, our chief finan-
cial officer; and our attorney Russell
Wade and I met with the military to
discuss the recent successful test
dives of the hyper sub," Marion said.
"Amerault used to head up the
entire budget for the U.S. Navy."
Marion said that SPECWAR

acknowledged that they have opera-
tional and capability gaps.
"They basically told me that there
is nothing else like it and that it is a
technology that they need in their
inventory now.

EDITORIAL

New year

offers a

fresh start

Today is the day, Columbia
County. Back to work,
shaking off the holiday ,
sluggishness that always
follows the peak of
Christmas and New Year's. On top of
this, the weather isn't cooperating and it
doesn't even feel like Florida.
Happy freezing new year!
This is the turning point. This is the
time when everyone starts with a fresh
slate and everyone has a chance to
forget 2007 and move forward with new
goals, new energy and a new focus on
what will be accomplished in this
upcoming year.
A new year can be an uphill climb, or
it can be a controlled cruise that
focuses on achieving milestones. What
determines this is our individual
attitudes.
Goals and resolutions are easy to set
in the early days of a new year. But
today's goal depends on the daily
execution of a systematic plan -
tomorrow and every day.
Want to be successful in 2008? Then
act like nothing can stop you from it.
The year will be what we make it.
Each of our individual mindsets will
determine what we accomplish, how far
we go and where we are as people this
time next year. Each of us controls our
own destiny.
What will you do with your new year?

H I G H L IG H TS
IN HISTORY
Today is Wednesday, Jan. 2, the
second day of 2008. There are 364 days

Policy" to facilitate trade with China.

Granada, the last Arab stronghold in
Spain, surrendered to Spanish forces.
In 1788, Georgia became the fourth
state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
S In 1921, religious services were
broadcast on radio for the first time as
KDKA in Pittsburgh aired the regular
Sunday service of the city's Calvary
Episcopal Church.
In 1929, the United States and
Canada reached agreement on joint action
to preserve Niagara Falls.
In 1935, Bruno Hauptmann went on
trial in Flemington, N.J., on charges of
kidnapping and murdering the
, 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne
Lindbergh. (Hauptmann was found guilty,
and executed.)
In 1942, the Philippine capital of
Manila was captured by Japanese forces
during World War II.
In 1960, Sen. John F. Kennedy of -
