Safety

urged

during

holidays

Lake City Fire Department
emphasizes awareness and
safety around the house.
By TONY BRITT
tbritt@lakecityreporter.com
The Christmas holiday season is
one of the most joyous times of the
year, but also happens to be one of
the most dangerous.
Live Christmas trees with dry nee-
dles near heat sources, too many
cords in electrical outlets and burning
candles near flammable items all are
holiday accidents waiting to happen.
The Lake City Fire Department is
warning local residents about the
dangers of holiday fires as part of its
annual safety campaign promoting
its smoke detector program.
Don Wilson, Lake City Fire
Department public education coordi-
nator and driver/engineer, said the
fire department has had the smoke
detector program for at least 15 years.
As part of the program, local fam-
ili:- who don't have smoke detec-
tors or families who cannot afford
smoke detectors, can get themifrom
the Lake City Fire Department.
"The program helps area families
by protecting them," Wilson said.
"For families that can't afford smoke
detectors, it gives them the security

Smoke Detector.Quick Tips
Firefighters recommend
installing a smoke detector on each
level and one in each bedroom or
sleeping area of a home:
For maximum protection. use a
dual sensor smoke detector, which
has an ionization and photoelectric
sensor;
Smoke alarms should be tested
weekly;
I Clean the smoke alarm monthly
by gently vacuuming the outside of
the smoke alarm using the soft
brush attachment of the vacuum.
Never use water, cleaners or
solvents since they may damage the
unit. Test the unit afier cleaning.
If the smoke alarm becomes
contaminated by-excessive dirt, dust
and/or grime and cannot be cleaned
to avoid unwanted false alarms,
replace the unit immediately;
SRelocate the unit if it sounds
frequent, unwanted alarms;
Change the batteries every six
months; and
Replace your smoke alarms at
least every 10 years.

JOLLY ONE TALKS WITH LAKE CITY REPORTER

JALA HARRIS/Lake City Reporter
Santa Claus makes one of his stops at the Lake City Mall recently before he heads on to visit other children
around the area.

Christmas Exclusive:

An interview with Santa Claus

Ageless wonder takes
time from schedule to
answer questions.
By LINDSAY DOWNEY
Idowney@lakecityreporter.comrn
Between preparing for his
annual Christmas Eve sleigh ride
around the world and talking to

children every night at Olustee
Park, Kris Kringle has been keep-
ing busy. Before he makes his final
2006 appearance from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.
today at Olustee Park, Santa made
time for a rare telephone interview
with the Lake City Reporter. Santa
said he hopes boys and girls will be
oh their best behavior this holiday
season and he looks forward
to delivering presents with his

reindeer on Christmas Eve.
Reporter: What are children
asking for this year?
Santa: "Well, the girls are asking
for a lot of dolls. The boys and some
of the girls want skateboards and the
boys are also wanting four-wheelers,
a lot of Xboxes and PlayStations -
and bicycles, of course. The big craze
this year are the Heelys (shoes that

roll on a ball built into the heel).
Almost everybody is wanting those."
R: Have children asked you
for anything besides toys and
clothes?
S: "I've had a couple of kids ask
me for their dad to come home so
they could be with their dad. And

EDITORIAL

Florida Trail

Association

made a

great choice

The Florida Trail Association
recently named the Town
of White Springs its first
Gateway Community along
the Florida Trail. That's
quite an honor for the quaint river town
that so majestically serves as a natural
tourism Mecca for the area.
White Springs is worthy of such an
honor and we're glad the administrative
board of the Florida Trail Association
was eager to recognize White Springs
for what we already knew it's a great
location that is unified in support of
Natural Florida and all the open
countryside offers.
In many areas, the Florida Trail is
difficult to access and very remote.
White Springs is the exception because
the trail runs directly through Stephen
Poster Folk Culture Center State Park,
then hugs the bank of the Suwannee
River as it curls west toward the
Panhandle.
The Florida Trail meanders more
than 1,400 miles from deep in the
Everglades north through the middle of
the state, turns west in the Osceola
National Forest and crosses the
Panhandle to Pensacola.
The trail encircles Lake Okeechobee
and the Orlando area, has a spur that
runs to the Atlantic Ocean near Palm
13each, then explores Florida's forested
wilderness areas of the Ocala and
Osceola National Forests. It delicately
glides through the sugar-white beaches
along the Gulf of Mexico in the
Panhandle.
There are many points of interest
along the trail and many towns and
small cities that could have been .
chosen as the first Gateway Community,
but White Springs makes the m.nst
sense and the Florida Trail Association
recognized this. It's a great place to
gain easy access to the Florida Trail
and begin exploring Natural Florida.
People who didn't know of the area's
grandeur, now have another chance to
gain exposure to the Suwannee Valley.
We all will benefit from the increased
tourism this accolade may bring.

All the way is a long time

Statistics show that
teenage marriages in
America face the
highest risk of -
divorce. We have
kids marrying kids and
having kids and they have
difficulty maintaining the
first and fundamental
commitments.
Somewhere years ago I ran
across a clipping that I kept
and used. Who wrote it and
where it came from I do not
know. It is rather frightening
or sobering and needs to be
read seriously. By the way, all
teenage marriages do not end
up broken. Ann and I have
been married now for 54
years. I was 19 and she was 18
when we said our vows. Read,
carefully the witness who
, speaks of, how life is for her.
"Let me tell you what it is
like to be married at 17. It is
like living in this dump on the
third floor. Your only window
looks out over somebody
else's third floor dump.
"It is like coming home so
tired you feel nearly dead from *
standing all day at your
checker's job in the supermarket
But you don't dare sit down
because you might never get
up. And there are so many
things you have to do cooking
and washing and ironing. But
you go through the motions
and you hate your job.
"You ask yourself, why
don't you quit?" And you know
why. Because there are
grocery bills, and drug bills
and rent to pay, and Jimmy's
crummy little check from the
lumberyard won't cover them.
That's why.
'Then you tell the sitter
goodbye and you try to play
with the baby until Jimmy
comes home. Only sometimes
you don't feel like it. But you
do it anyway because you feel
guilty about being away from
her all day. Then you mix the
formula and wash diapers, and
you hate doing it. You wonder
how long it will be before she
can tell that you hate it. And
wouldn't it be awful if she
knew already?
"Then Jimmy doesn't come
home and you know he's

OTHER

decided to go with the boys
again and do the things he
should have gotten done
before he married you..
"So finally you eat the lousy
meal by yourself and go to
bed and cry your eyes out.
"When he does come home,
you can tell he's been
drinking, but you don't say a
word because he hates to be
told anything. So you try to go
to sleep and dream about your
parents, and your brothers
and the kids you knew at
school. You think about the
great meals your mother used
to cook, and how nice your
room was at home. Then you
remember how she tried to
talk you out of marrying so
young and you got mad at her
and called her a dried-up old
woman and accused her of
having forgotten what it was
like to be in love.
"You try to push the
thoughts of other boys out of
your mind, but they keep
coming back. Especially that
certain boy who gave you
your first kiss. He won the
state science prize and is
going to be a doctor.
"You wonder how different
life would have been if you
had gone to college. You have
that feeling that Jimmy and
the baby are all part of a bad
dream. But you know it's no
dream. It is real. So you reach
over to touch Jimmy, and he
pushes you away and says
something mean. So you cry
yourself to sleep and wake up
with a splitting headache.
What a way to start another
day of hard work!'
"If you meet anyone who
thinks she knows what it is like
to be married at 17, please tell
her about me or better still,
give her this letter."

Be careful what you do with
the words that this girl wrote.
Times have changed and in
many cases, the boy and girl
are not husband and wife,
they are just "living together."
The ugly specter of divorce,
wife or woman beating, child
abuse and all the side effects
has touched most every family
in some way. "The way of the
transgressor is hard," John
writes, "Whosoever committeth
sin transgresseth also the law,
for sin is a transgression of
the law" (I John 3:4).
A young man walked up to a
woman, "Hey you wanna go
all the way?" She could see in
his eyes a beginner, in the
game that men love to play.
"Giving pleasure to men is my '
business," she said, "You're
just 16 years old to the day;
don't you know there's a ,
whole lot of difference, in one
night and all of the way?
"I know that there's a room
in a motel just waiting, with
satin sheets and mirrors
within, but believe me that's
not really loving, just a cheap
way for you to begin.
"All the way is a long, long
journey, and the bed is only a
sign; for a lifetime of loving
one woman," she said. "All the
way is a long, long time.
"Some day you'll want your
own family, and have some
kids and a life of your own.
Your joys and heartaches will
continue to happen, but you
don't have to bear them alone."
As they parted the lady
remembered her own life of
passion and wine. She
brushed a tear from her check
as she whispered, "All the way
is a long, long time.
"All the way is a long, long
journey, and the bed is only a
sign; for a lifetime of loving
one woman," she said. "All the
way is a long, long time."
I wrote this "Country and
Western song" many years
ago. It was never put to music.
There is a great truth in the
title, "ALL THE WAY IS A
LONG, LONG TIME."

that they can go to bed at night, go to

Wilson said the smoke detectors are
often donated to the fire department by
Lowe's, the International Association of
Fire Chiefs and the First Alert Corp.
The Lake City Fire Department will
provide the smoke detectors to any fami-
lies that don't have smoke detectors.'
"Anyone (who), doesn't have a smoke
detector and needs one, we'll put one in
their home," Wilson said. 'The program
requires us to install the smoke detectors,
we just can't give them to the people."
As part of the program, the fire depart-
ment will install the smoke detectors, and
if the homeowner requests it, the fire-
fighters can take a quick look around the
home pointing out possible fire hazards.
'The most common fire hazards we see
are probably electrical wires," Wilson

R: How old are you,
Santa?
S: "Santa's been around for a
long time. I'm so old I don't
even know how old I am."
R: How is Mrs. Claus
these days?
S: 'Mrs. Claus is doing won-
derful. She makes all my outfits
for me and she can do that in one.

bake for the elves. Of course, you
know elves they love sweet
stuff It's got to have sugar in it so
they can be active."
R: How many elves do
you have?
S: "I have about 400 elves at
the North Pole. It (the number
of elves) is growing every year"
R: What are the elves
doing while you're in Lake
City, talking to children at
Olustee Park?
S: "The elves are loading the
sleigh with all the presents so all
I'll do when I get there (to the
North Pole) is pop in and go."
R What's your secret to
getting to everyone's home
in one night?
S: "Magic dust."
R- "How do you get inside
homes that don't have fire-
places?
S: "I can't give all my secrets
away. There is not a house or
an apartment (or any other
place) that I can't get into."

cords in one outlet all piled together,
cords running together and underneath

R: How are Rudolph and
the rest of the reindeer
preparing for the big
night?
S: "The kids always ask me
where my reindeer are and I tell
them they're at the North Pole.
They're being groomed and
they're training. They'll be real-
ly skinny when I get back."
(Note: Santa said he uses
his jet, Santa One, for trans-
portation while the reindeer
are at the North Pole).
R What do you do when
you're not getting ready for
Christmas?
S: "I get prepared for next
year I get out my list and check
it twice to see who's been
naughty or nice."

R: Do you ever get tired of
all the cookies and milk
children leave for you on
Christmas Eve?
S: "No, I never get tired of
cookies and milk. My favorite
cookie is chocolate chip.
Rudolph loves carrots."

R: What would you say to
children who try to catch a
glimpse of you on
Christmas Eve?
S: "Because of the magic dust,
they're not going to be able to see
me. I can get in and out before
they can even blink an eye."
R: What else would you
like to say to the children of
North Florida?
S: "I just want all the kids to
know I want them to be very
good, have a Merry Christmas
and that Santa sends his love to
everyone."

rugs and of course, no smoke detectors."
Wilson estimates that the Lake City Fire
Department has given out 30-40 smoke
detectors to local families this year.
"It's important for families to have
smoke detectors in there homes because
it saves lives," Wilson said.
In addition to smoke detectors, many
families also install carbon monoxide
detectors, '.lhich can increase a family's
safety.
Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odor-
less gas that robs blood of oxygen. When
inhaled, it bonds with the hemoglobin in
blood, displacing life-giving oxygen.
Exposure to carbon monoxide can make
people sick and victims exposed to
enough carbon monoxide can suffer brain
damage or even death.
Though the fire department doesn't have
a program where it can provide carbon
monoxide detectors, firefighters do advo-
cate them as important safety equipment

Tigers
sweep
first two
rounds of
tourney
Columbia High
defeats Newberry,
Bronson.
From staff reports
The Columbia High boys
varsity basketball team
opened the Hitchcock
Challenge Tournament with
two wins this week,
defeating Newberry 69-55
on Thursday and
toppling Bronson 73-32 on
Friday.
Columbia head coach
Trey Hosford said the
Tigers had trouble finding
their rhythm early against
Newberry, but put
together an impressive
second half. -
"We came out a bit slow (
and started off down 8-6," he
said. "Then we went on a run
to go up 15-12 at the end of
the first quarter, and we
were up 31-21 at the half, and
we distanced ourselves in
the third. Going into the final
quarter we lead 54-35"
The Tigers played their
type of game a full-court
press with points scored in
transition, Hosford said.
"It was a good win, even
though I don't think we
played our best basketball,"
Hosford said of
the performance against
Newberry, but the 73-32
win over Bronson was
enough to satisfy the
coach.
"I think we really came
out and played well even
though we knew we were
better," he said. "A lot of
times teams get caught
up playing to the level of
their competition, but we
really played as close to a
complete game as I've
seen."
Hosford said his only
complaint was a 12-point
second quarter by
Bronson.
"We had a couple
breakdowns, and we gave
up a few points then," he
said.
The lead allowed Hosford
to bring in players off the
bench, and 11 of 12 on the
roster scored points for the
Tigers.
Vince Fulston led CHS
with 14 points, Kenny
Williams scored 12, Byron
Shemwell scored nine all
in the first quarter and
Ryan Bell scored eight,
including two three-point-
ers.
Against Newberry,
Fulston led CHS with 13
points, Williams and
Tavares Reynolds each
scored 12, Jakeem Hill
scored 11, J. Bradshaw
scored six, Shemwell had
four, Cameron Reynolds
scored three and Bell had
two.
The Tigers will now play
the winner of Friday night's
Palatka-Santa Fe game at
8 p.m. on Saturday,
and Hosford said the
championship game
atmosphere surrounding
the tournament is just what
he was looking for.
"Usually we just play a
tournament after Christmas,
but that gives us a 10-day
break," he said. "But by
playing it before Christmas
we can get in some practices
and three games and it gives
us the feel of a district
tournament.
"There's no junior varsity
team playing before you,
you just get three road

games on a bus."

New Years Eve
service planned
Olivet Missionary Baptist
Church will have its New
Years' Eve service and
memorial at 7 p.m. Dec. 31.
Children need
fathers nurturing
COLORADO SPRINGS,
Colo. James Dobson,
chairman of Focus on the
Family, says "the two most
loving women in the world
cannot provide a daddy for a
little boy."
Dobson is responding to
news that Mary Cheney, the
lesbian daughter of Vice
President Dick Cheney, is
pregnant and plans to raise
the baby with her partner of
15 years, Heather Poe.
In an op-ed posted Dec. 12
on the Time magazine Web
site, Dobson said most social
scientific research concludes
that children do best when
raised by a married mother
and father.
U.S. criticizes
Egyptian court
WASHINGTON The
U.S. State Department has
,condemned an Egyptian court
ruling that denies Bahais the
right to have their faith
recognized on official
identification documents.
Rejecting a lower court
decision favorable to Bahais,
the Supreme Administrative
Court ruled that the Egyptian
constitution recognizes only
Islam, Christianity and
Judaism.
"It is certainly a ruling that
flies in the face of stated
Egyptian commitments to
freedom of expression,
freedom of religion," State
Department spokesman Sean
McCormack said Monday.
"We would hope that the
Egyptian government would
take steps that would allow
people of the Bahai faith to
obtain these identification
cards."
The cards of Bahais have a
line through the section for
the person's religion.
The dispute directly affects
only the country's Bahais, '
2,000 or so of the more than
72 million Egyptians. Civil
rights advocates in Egypt,
however, said it's evidence
that the court ignores all
existing protections of
religious freedom.
Alabama church
recalls bombing
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. In a
new building and with the
mayor and hometown
congressman on hand, Bethel
Baptist Church
commemorated the 50th
anniversary of the racist
bombing that targeted the
Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth as he
led the fight against the city's
segregation laws.
No one was injured in the
bombing of the black church
on Christmas Day 1956. And
Shuttlesworth told the
anniversary crowd last
Sunday that the bombings,
threats and beatings he
received were just part of his
job.
"I just had the unmitigated
gall to challenge things," said
Shuttlesworth, 82, who retired
earlier this year as pastor of
Greater New Light Baptist
Church in Cincinnati, which
he founded 40 years ago. He
led Bethel Baptist from 1953
through 1961
Mayor Bernard Kincaid and
U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala.,
were among dozens of guests
at the commemorations in the
church's new building just
down the street from the origi-
nal structure.
During Shuttlesworth's
tenure at Bethel, his church
was bombed three times, his
home was dynamited, and he
was beaten when he tried to
enroll his children in all-white
Phillips High School.
On Dec. 25, 1956,
dynamite was placed between
the church and
Shuttlesworth's onsite home.
He took the pulpit for a few
minutes before the bomb
went off. While no one was

injured, the home was badly.
damaged.
