Dear Classified Guys,
While most people are toasting with
eggnog at their office parties, I'm
singing the blues. It turns out I work
for Scrooge! I put in extra, hours
almost every week this year and
worked harder than ever before. I
didn't mind because I thought my
boss rewarded hard work. When the
bonus checks came around this sea-
son, there wasn't much of a reward.
You could say my check was made
from coal dust. It has me making a
New Year's resolution to never let it
happen again. Even though the
employment ads are a bit thin
this time of year, I've been ,.
scanning them ever since I )
got my check. A few have "-7'
caught my interest and I plan on
interviewing with them. I don't
mind working hard, but I want to find
someone who will reward it come
holiday time. Is there any way to tell
if I'll be working for one of Scrooge's
relatives at a new company?

Cash: You could hope that the three
ghosts of Christmas will visit your boss,
but you probably shouldn't bank on it.
Carry: While you may be disap-
pointed, it is possible that your boss is
not Ebenezer Scrooge. Depending on

the size of your company, the decision
for a bonus check may not even be his
to make.
Cash: If this is a larger company, it
could be that managers in a higher posi-
tion make the decision. For many com-
panies, bonus checks are often a
percentage of salary or based on man-
agement levels.
Carry: Now if this is a small compa-
ny where your boss is the owner,
finances could limit him if the company
didn't perform as expected.
Cash: Before you lose your
Christmas spirit from a check made of
coal, consider talking with your boss.
If a financial reward isn't possible,

maybe he could compensate for your
additional efforts with alternatives such
as more vacation time or flexible work -
hours.
Carry: Then next year, you won't
mind as much when you receive your
bonus check on vacation!
Cash: If you still plan on looking for
a new job, know that it may be difficult
to foresee how a company will act at
the holidays. After all, they do call it a
"bonus check" for a reason.
Carry: Remember though, your best
opportunity for an increase in salary is
to negotiate it at the time you're hired.
That way there won't be any disappoint-
ments when it comes to the holidays.

Scrooged
What would Christmas be without the
story ofA Christmas Carol by Charles
Dickens? First published in 1844, the
story took Dickens about six weeks to
complete. Desperately in need of money,
he hoped the royalties of the book would
help his financial crisis. Despite the
book's success, selling out the entire run
of 6,000 on the first day, Dickens made
little money. Today his original manu-.
script of the book resides at Pierpont
Morgan Library in New York City and is
typically on display around the holidays.
Party Crashers
Every year, many companies treat
their employees to an office Christmas
party. It's one of the few times a year
when all levels of staff have the opportu-
nity to mingle and socialize. However,
for some the party can break their career.
Surveys suggest that about 15% of all
office parties have employees with inap-
propriate behavior. The expertsadvise
that moderation is best during the festiv:-
ities, dressing appropriately and keeping
your eating and drinking in check. After
all, no one wants to be the next day's
conversation at the water cooler.

Mix It Up:

How to Easily
Change Your

Dog's Food
If your dog is a finickN eater or shows
signs of a reduced appetite, consult oaur
veterinarian and discuss the possible
need for a change in his diet If
you decide to make a change, a
ke. to a successful transition
is to introduce the ne., food

food with 75 percent
of the old food, and
graduallI adjusting the
proportions o.er the
course of three days

percent of the new
food. Dogs love
routine, so feeding
them at the same time
and place every day
%ill help the transition.
Also keep in mind pre-
mium pet foods often
contain more nutnents,
therefore, smaller portions are usually
recommended.

Doggiecice

Dos and Don'tS
'According to leading experts, trim pets
that eat well and enjoy plenty of physical
activity can live, on average, 15 percent
longer than overweight pets.
Physical activity is just as important as
nutritional health in the life of a dog Des-
pite today's more sedentary lifestyles, dogs.
like humans, are made for activity. And the:,
especially love social activity. So for both
man and his best friend, exercise, whether
daily walks or playing fetch, is so much
more enjoyable together.
For dogs, lack of exercise can result in
behavior problems or even lead to physical
ailments. Bad-dog behavior such as biting,
chewing, digging and house-soiling is signi-
ficantly lower when dogs get
enough exercise. An exercised
dog rests more calmly at home
and is less nervous when left
alone. Consider these dos and
don't when it comes to dogs
and exercise:
The best exercise provides
both physical and mental
Stimulation, *
a Letting a dog out into the
yard is not enough. They
rarely exercise alone, but
wait for "their people" to
play with them.
Let your pet play with other
dogs to help him learn to
enjoy other dogs and people.
Consider taking him to a
dog park.
a Retrieving is easy exercise.
Throw a toy or ball far
rather than high. Jumping
high in the air and landing
awkwardly can lead to knee
injuries.
Playing tug games is a great
substitute for walking if
exercise space is limited.

JUSTIN LANG/Lake City Reporter
An unidentified man anc boy get away with jumping from a bridge on State Road 47
into the Sante Fe River Monday afternoon. The act is unsafe and illegal. They were
among a group of people swimming in the river at Sante Fe River Park just south of
Fort White. Recent rains had led forecasters to call for a flood warning for that area
of the river, but canceled it after levels remained below flood stage and began to
slowly fall over the weekend.

Forecast calls for
more precipitation
this week.
By JUSTIN LANG

The constant crack of
lightning during thunder-
storms that sliced through
Columbia County Sunday
night could have been but
warning shots for the week
ahead.
After those storms rum-
bled regularly with thunder
and produced a short-lived
but heavy downpour on
most of the county, fore-
casters were calling for
much of the same today
and most of this week.
After a lightning bolt
split a 40-foot tall wild cher-
ry tree down the middle in
the backyard of county res-
idents Lea and James Blue
Sunday, they and others
were hoping for a more
calm forecast.
"I thought it had hit the
house to begin with,"
James said of the strike,

The power of the light-
ning brought down a large
limb and caused bark to
explode off the tree, land-
ing as far as 20 feet away.
Some of the debris had fall-
en in the Blues' watermel-
on patch, leaving James to
clean it up for much of
Monday morning.
Though lightning strikes'
had popped all over
Sunday, he said "that was

the only one real close."
According to the Parks
Camp, meteorologist with
the National Weather
Service office in
Jacksonville, thunder-
storms with heavy rain will
again be likely this after-
noon, with the same out-
look expected until Friday.

A free

justice

spirit

W hen he was the nominee
to be U.S. attorney gener-
al, Alberto Gonzales got
the usual confirmation
grilling from the Senate,
but once the microphones were off, he
faced really only one question: The drapes.
Do they stay or do they go?
We now have an answer. They're gone,
and the Spirit ofJustice once again stands
th all half-naked; 12-l/2-foot aluminum
S1i'ri in the Gr -t Iill of the Department
of Justice. With't fanifaire or .announce-d
ment, the department removed the blue
drape that covered her bare breast since
shortly after the prudish John Ashcroft
became attorney general.
That modesty came with a considerable
cost $8,000 for the drapes and ridicule
for the department. And the department
clearly didn't want to dwell on its skin
back, so to speak. The Associated Press
says it wasn't allowed to photograph the
newly unveiled Spirit, which is not only
churlish but probably violates some regu-
lation because the statue is, after all, public
property.
Spirit was thrust into the limelight when
Ronald Reagan's attorney general, Edwin
Meese, was photographed waving a
pornography report with the half-nude
statue prominently in the background. The
photographers gleefully did likewise with
Ashcroft, and that's when the drapes
appeared.
Spirit is done in the monumental, even
overbearing style of the 1930s the build-
ing opened in 1934 that has been long
out of style. If it were not for her strategic
positioning, she would have gone unre-
marked like so much of her fellow statuary
in the capital. Still, it was no way to treat a
lady.
In the case of the Justice Department v.
Spirit of Justice, it's fair to say that justice
was done.

'Sound of
Music' great
I had the privilege to attend
the musical play, "Sound of
Music" at Lake City
Community College. I wanted
to tell those of you who have
not gone out to the college to
see a play or hear a concert,
that you are certainly missing
out on a wonderful experi-
ence.
All you senior citizens look-
ing for entertainment at a rea-
sonable price, this is it.
"Sound of Music" was
delightful. The music and act-

ing superb and on a par what
could be seen on Broadway.
What a wonderful thing to
have available to us here in
Lake City.

Science Fair
help lauded
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the
many sponsors of the
Suwannee Valley Regional
Science Fair.
I would like to particularly
thank the sponsors of the

International delegates,
Jessica Stanton and myself.
The International Science
and Engineering Fair was a
very enlightening experience.
It definitely motivated me to
explore the field of science
even further. I hope that many
more delegates will be able to
attend the International
Competition in the future and
that they will enjoy a similar
rewarding experience.
I would like to thank for
their generous contributions.
Their support of the Science
Fair is noted and appreciated.

force than normal, with a lot of
deep moisture in the area,"
Camp said.
He said a "tropical wave" of
moist air moved in off the
southeast coast of Florida dur-
ing the weekend and took up
residence over much of the
state.
"For this time of the year,
,we start getting those coming
across occasionally," Camps
.said.
Today's forecast calls for
mostly cloudy conditions with
highs in the mid to. upper 80s
and a 60 percent chance of
rain for most of the day.
Wednesday is expected to be
more of the same, according
to the NWS, but with a 70 per-
cent chance of rain. However,
Camp said that trend is not
expected to survive into the.
weekend with the rain chance
to drop" to 40 percent, with
highs returning to the low to
mid 90s.
Though the NWS issued a
flood warning for the Santa Fe
River near Three Rivers
Estates, late last week, it was
lifted Monday morning,
despite Sunday night's heavy
rain. According to the NWS,
the river in the Fort White
area was churning below the
flood stage of 19 feet. -

'The Santa Fe is in pretty
good shape right now," Camp
said. "But we are analyzing the
situation and we are watching,
it."
He said the Suwannee River
in the White Springs area has.
not yet been a flood concern,
but that the NWS is nmonitor-
ing its level.
Tom Mirti, a hydrologist
with ,the Suwannee River
Water Management District,
said that other than the "minor
flooding" of the Santa Fe last
week, the river levels are start-
ing to drop.
Also, he said, right now the
groundwater level is about 75
percent of which he catego-
rized as "relatively high, but
doesn't necessarily mean river
flooding."
"If we get a lot (of rain) that
could be an issue, but other-
wise more rain is good for the
aquifer," Mirti said.
SThliugh .,it may seem, to
many that the weather has
been especially wet over the
past few weeks, he said it has
mostly been scattered and
short-lived rainfall.
On Sunday, Mirti said
most of Columbia County
received about an inch of
rain, which is easily
absorbed by the soil.:
'Typically you don't expect
any kind of flooding from typ-
ical summer rainfall," he
said.

educated about and work

MacRae was nominated and
selected for an Excellence
award by the Florida Coalition
Against Domestic Violence.
for work she has done with
Three Rivers on behalf of
domestic violence victims. She
received the award at a May
ceremony in Orlando.
"I was excited about it, that
my peers thought highly of
me," she said. '"When you get
an award like this it encour-
ages you to keep going. You
know you are having a positive
effect on many people's lives,
so it's worth it."
MacRae. has been with
Three Rivers for about 15
years, serving the last six as a
managing attorney in the Lake
City office. A graduate of law

school at/ the University of
Miami, shle is also wife to
George Congi and mother of,
Caitlin, 10, and Kimmie Congi,
8.
Three Rivers provides legal.
services for many low-income
people otherwise unable to
afford legal representation.
Much of its work is referred
through the three domestic
violence shelters in Florida's
Third Judicial Circuit, such as
Another Way in Lake City.
MacRae said since she has
been educated about domestic
violence and its effect on vic-
tims, families and communi-
ties, she.has strived to make
sure its victims are served.
She said all of the Three
Rivers staff are educated and
as committed to helping
domestic violence victims.
"When they are here, we
want them to feel comfortable
and know that we are on their
side," she said.

Howard to lead Lady 'Wolves

I ape Former Budfliolz
N coach takes over

By TIM KIRBY
tkirby@lakecityreporter.corn
Rebuilding the Lake City
Community College softball
program has been turned
over to someone whu knows
the importance of the sport to
the community.
Donna Howard was
S- announced as the Lady
-- Timberwolves coach by
Athletic Director Tom Clark
on Monday.
Howard spent last year as a
volunteer assistant coach for
the University of Florida. but
Lake City fans will remember
& .1: bct-.a d hi coach-,4,
Buchholz High.
"'My big goal is to start
bringing the tradition back -
getting Lake City softball
back on track," Howard said.
'"That's the main thing every-
o body talks about."
.- Through slow pitch and fast
pitch, Lake City Community
*College has been the premier
program in the Mid-Florida
Conference, arguably the best
in the state and on par with
any in the country. The Lady
'Wolves won 25 of 27 Mid-
Florida Conference titles and
state and national titles in
__ both brands of softball.
It all came crashing down,
wwith a six-win spring that
including the firing of the
head coach at the start of the
season.
"Donna has got her work
cut out for her," Clark said. "I
think she is going to do a
good job.
"I expect definite improve-
ment, but not miracles."
Clark listed the LCCC pri-

orities:
* Recruit the caliber of ath-
lete worthy of,playing in this
program;
Restore the confidence of
the athletes;
Work hard and be a good
role model;
Help our ladies with
scholarships to four-year
schools.
Lake City has nine return-
ing players and Clark has left
filling iut the squad to
Howard. He said her year at
Florida was a help.,

"Donna's exposure to. col-
lege made me feel more com-
fortable," Clark said. "We
wanted whoever we got to
bring in their own players.
She was very successful in
high school.
"Coaching is coaching; she
has just got to throw recruit-
ing into it now."
Howard has the coaching
credentials, especially at
Buchholz where the Bobcats-
had a three-year run. when,
they went 79-11 including a
state runner-up finish in 2002.

Howard left Buchholz after an
11-11 rebuilding year in 2004.
"I had reached the point
where I really wanted to
coach softball full-time,"
Howard said. "I was looking
to get to the college level and
that was another reason to be
a volunteer at Florida. I got
more experience at the col-
lege level."
Howard is from the Atlanta
area, and she attended
Georgia Southern on a bas-
ketball scholarship. She
earned her undergraduate

and Master's degrees at the
Statesboro school.
She coached basketball
(18-4, state final four) and ten-
nis (region champion) at
Bulloch Academy in States-
boro. At Statesboro High, she
coached softball and was dis-
trict runner-up.
Howard then moved to
Trenton High where she
taught and coached for nine
years. Her basketball teams
compiled a 107-57 record and
won a district title.
In softball she had a record
of 50-12 as JV coach, was var-
sity assistant when the Lady
Tigers won state in 1992 and
was runner-up in 1993.
After taking over as head
coach in 1995, Trenton went
14-5 in Howard's first year and
made tdi playoffs. In tIi.x sec-
ond 'year. Trenton was 23-7
and advanced to the final four.
Howard left Trenton for
Gainesville to become an ath-
letic director at Buchholz, but
the coaching bug was back
after a few years.
"There are some really
good points about being an
AD," Howard said. "You know
the names and faces, but you
don't get that day-to-day con-
tact and the great things
about being on a team."
The first day for fall classes.
at, LCCC is Aug. 22 and
Howard will use the time
recruiting Lady 'Wolves.
"I have already started the
process," Howard said.
"Another appeal of Lake City
is I can stay in Florida and
have all my contacts. Lake
City has such a tradition, kids
want to come here and play.
" "I want the best players
who we feel fit our mission -
do well, and continue on and
end up with a four-year
degree."
