\ The Navy seemed to be a natural choice for her. Her mother-in-law
was one of the first! WAVES to volunteer for service during World WarII
her father-in-law is a retired Chief Radioman; her husband, John
is'a PHAN at VP-16; her brother-in-law is currently at Boot Camp;; ;
and her father was a mustang Lieutenant Junior Grade during World
War II. A niece, ten years her junior, outranks her-she's an RMSN in

Puerto Rico. ,.
After nine weeks of Boot Camp in Orlando, AA Anderson reported :
directly to HS-1. "I turned down a school," she explains, "because I '
didn't know what wanted to do..what I could do." "
During her short time at HS-1, she has determined to become an .
.Aviation Electronics Technician! (AT).Her counselors suggested the job
on the Line so she could get to know the aircraft and its systems.
Anderson says, "I guess they figure I'll be able to do my AT job
ta eA 6"qv q, better if I've worked on the bird andknow_ just how demanding the .
pilots are about the systems being 'up'. I would be,if I were flying."
She says, "The men on the Line were a little concerned about how I
would be treated-the language gets a little rough when things get
tense.They were also concerned about my lifting heavy things.
"One day, I was struggling to attach the fuel hose to the bird so I
WAY, SIR"-AA could refuel it. It seemed lighter and I thought, 'Gee, I'm finally

Airman Anderson smiled when asked about still being feminine in
her job. "I don't wear makeup because either the sun melts it or the !
rain washes if off. A hairdo? I don't even try. Sun, rain, rotor wash,
h Mickey Mouse ears..I'm at work. I'm busy."
Then she got a wistful look and regarded her neatlymanicurednails.

7 is the data set for the annual St. Augustine "Pal

rpft Day", a day set aside in the Anchient City to say "thanks" to servicemen -
and their families.
Sponsored by the.USO Council of St.Augustine and St. Johns County,
in cooperation with the entire community, Pal Day features a day of '
fun in the nation's oldest city.

12 The only admission requirement .i is. that servicemen be in uniform
# and tours.dependents have ID cards if their husbands or fathers are on


aw Pal Day features free admission to St. Augustine area attractions,
including Marineland of Florida, a complimentary dinner served from
2-6 p.m., and free transportation around town and to and from

C, -A Marineland.Plenty of free parking will be available, with visitors invited to parkat
the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Information Center. This lot is
1Iv within easy walking distance of the Ketterlinus Junior High School

Gym, where a free lunch will be served.

the COMNAVAIRLANT Battle "E" and the CNO Safety '
Award in ceremonies onboard the USS Independence.
Both awards were presented by VAdm. F.H.
Michaelis, COMNAVAIRLANT.The .

Battle "E" recognizes HS-5 as the best Atlantic
Fleet Squadron in the areas of operational readiness and
proficiency. During the year and a half competition
period, the "Nightdippers" met their operational .
commitments to the Sixth Fleet in both ASW and Utility
roles.

HS-5 was a major ASW asset to the Sixth Fleet during ,
deployments to the Med and squadron pilots and air- ) .
crewmen also made numerous military and civilian
