Another recent Chile item is the 500 escudo com-
memorative of the International Symposium on & : :i
Volcanology held Sept. 9 in Santiago.

BOGOTA, Colombia--Newest Universal Postal Union

Another Colombia emission of note is the 10 peso V :
commemorative of author Jose Eustasio Rivera. V;; V

he was a member of the commission which settled a
border dispute between Colombia and Venezuela.

Jax A special problem we have
experienced with this column is
providing our readers with a variety of recipies. Therefore we are
constantly alert for special recipies. We .

recently retested one which we acquired several when $* ; k
years ago ;
we had a bountiful supply of venison following a most successful : i
hunting season. With the local deer season just a few days away, some !
of our sportsmen readers may find our jerky recipe of interest. j !
We have used it for both venison and beef and the finished product
from either is delicious.

Quick Jerky
This recipe eliminates the long slow process of drying jerky in the r
sun as it is made entirely on top of the'stove and in the oven. The entire n t F; /
process takes about two to three hours. The procedure combines a
pickling process and a drying process. .
The venison or beef is prepared by cutting into y4 inch strips.Tough
cuts should be cut across the grain. Fat should be trimmed from the
slices. 7 r

After preparing the strips they should be boiled for about five :'
minutes in a pickling solution of 1 quart water, '& cup vinegar, 1 cup
salt and 1 tablespoon black pepper. A small amount of garlic powder,
onion powder, or other spices may be added to suit individual tastes.
This solution sufficient for the preparation of five pounds of meat.

After boiling we drain our strips in a collander and after they have
cooled slightly, roll them out flat with a rolling pin to remove excess IN THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT-AR James M. Rudd tries his luck at "Rope The Witch's Foot"
moisture. If the excess moisture has a pink tint the meat requires during the USO's Hospital Halloween Party. Looking on are ((2nd from Left-Right) Mrs. B.B. Sharp

take a little longer and the meat will be a little saltier.

The strips are then arranged on a baking sheet or broiler rack for
drying in an oven that has been set at 200 degrees.Leave the oven door
ajar during the drying process to allow excess moisture to escape. LITTER HOT LINE '
Drying should be complete in IVi to 2 hours. .
f
After drying the strips may be seasoned with your favorite steak
sauce if additional flavor is desired. It is then ready for storage in Dial 2568QUALITY
plastic bags or glass jars. We use the wide mouth peanut butter
jars and find them ideal. Properly stored and kept dry, your jerky
could last for years. However, if your turns out like ours it will
disappear in a few days.

I '' '. -- Jax -NARF's new $5 million foundry and die forming facility has
'W1' .... been in operation, and proving its worth, for the past year.
." :" -i' Construction of the 200-foot insulated metal-on-steel structure beganin
I October 1971.Last year the building was completed and made ready
to receive tons of new equipment acquired to enhance the quality and
quantity of casting and heat treat operations essential to the
processing of aircraft and aircraft components.
According to A.F. (Tony) Fragale, the congenial foundry supervisor -
"the new facility was created to provide a shop which could
perform close, accurate and exotic types of heat treatment on metalsof
all kinds used in aircraft overhaul."
Mr. Fragale, whose diversified production background includes
experience in personnel and manufacturing,as well as the sheet metal
ar skills, is satisfied that the "barnstorming techniques" which
characterized heat treat processes during World War II have now
been sufficiently refined to guarantee a foundry operation which
reaches maximum efficiency as a basic requirement of aircraft
overhaul.
; rtr Before the new facility came into being,Mr.Fragale pointed out, the
a t heat treater performed his work on the part to be processed,
R F authenticated his operation and stamped the part for installation in
the aircraft. His record was the official record.
The current reporting system is geared to circumvent human error.
7. --- LI Every part on which heat treating is performed is recorded on a
pyrometric chart located in the air and temperature control telemetryroTne
