the Corps and, by fitting acts, to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular
interest to Marines; to promote fellowship among all Marines and further the Ideals of American
freedom and democracy; to promote and encourage good citizenship; hold sacred the memory and
history of those who have given their lives to the Nation; to foster love for the principles which have
been supported by blood and valor since the founding of the Republic; to maintain true allegiance to

civilian alike, and to their widows and orphans.
League members sponsor and participate in many worthwhile projects, including a program to

4 VP education program helps squadrons, students

Jax--The one-room schoolhouse lives again at Hangar 1000.
Starting at 12:30: p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday, one teacher-Carol Miner-
teaches Arithmetic, English, History and Civics in a program set up by Florida
Junior College (FJC) and the CPW-11 Patrol Squadrons.
The ten-week course leads to a General Equivalency Diploma and is offered to
armed forces personnel and their dependents who are at least 16 years old and
have been out of school at least one year.
The program is made possible under the auspices of the FJC Adult and Con-
tinuing Education Program,under the direction of Mr. Paul McCoy. PN2 Baxleyof
VP-16 was also instrumental in arranging the course and acting as liaison for
the squadrons.The .
s squadrons involved in the project (VP-49, VP-16 and VP-24)) and the CPW-
I\ 11 Staff are more than happy to allow the men to attend classes in lieu of their
I normal professional> duties. All feel that a well educated man is of more value to
I the Navy and himself than an uneducated one.
Enrollment costs$2 per man and about$4 is needed for books.At .
the completion of the course, a two and one-half day is administered at FJC.
According to Mrs.. Miner, the wife of a VP-24 officer, about 80 percent of the
: students eventually "make the grade".

Jax-When you think of a Navy officer,you automatically think of a ', ',,', :;1> .: .' ft
man. When you think of a Navy helicopter pilot surely you think of a .-'f'\" 'T"

man.Well, Ens. Anamaria Scott is an officer in the Navy and a Navy ,:" ::lt.y:'
helo pilot, but she certainly is not a man
Ens. Scott attended the University of California at Santa Barbera
and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and then
attended the Womans Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island She
was commissioned in May, 1973 and received her pilots wings a year
later.

After graduating from the University of California, Miss Scott was
attracted to the Navy's policy of equal pay for equal jobs and, having a
been previously involved in flying,this policy was an attractive assettoa i
aR '+ Sg'w
woman aviator.
Miss Scott obtained her private pilots license before entering the
Navy and includes flying among her list of hobbies (which also Include
scuba diving,dirt bike racing,Judo and playing the string bass).
When asked how she felt about being a woman officer and pilot in .
the Navy, Miss Scott said that she had, in general, been treated very i (
fair.She also felt that the majority of male officers tried to help her in -
every way possible,as they would any other young male pilot. : /
Presently, Ens. Scott is going through the Replacement Pilot
Training at HS-1.After completing this training,she will be attached
to HC-6, based in Norfolk, Va., flying political officials and military )
dignataries around the Washington DC area.
Miss Scott plans to make the Navy her career and is looking forward
tn her assignment with HC-6.

LUCIA, Windward Islands-This Caribbean island in the British \
West Indies has just issued a four stamp set commemorative of for-
mer governors.
Shown on the five-cent stamp is Baron de Laborie ((1784)),on the 35-cent
Sir John Moore ((1796-1797)), on the 80 cent ,Major General Dudley St.
Leger Hill, and on the one dollar item Sir Frederick Joseph Clarke
((1967.1971)).
The latter governor is one of the first of West Indian descent in the t .
Commonwealth. He was educated at St. Vincent's School and the k i'' ,' .'
School of Medicine at Edinburgh, Scotland. He developed a general .',
medical practice and became District Medical Officer for St.Lucia in
1946. In 1961 he was promoted to Chief Medical Officer.He s.
left the civil service in 1963, then went into private practice while i ";'.
remaining active in politics as Speaker of the Legislative Council from
