Inaugural Conference for the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic

Fleet (CINCLANTFLT) Advisory Group on Career Development of Navy

Women was held recently at the Navy's Human Resources Management Center

in Norfolk, Va.
The conference was held in response to a recent announcement by the office of

the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), regarding intentions to develop a career

plan for Navy Women comparable to that for men.

CINCLANTFLT, addressed the conference, stating the Navy's intent to work

toward equality for women.
The main objective of the conference was to identify problems pertaining to

assignments, career development and retention for women in the Navy and
recommend solutions to at least 10 of these. By the end of the four-day session 16

individual problems were identified and their proposed solutions were submittedto

CINCLANTFLT who will, in turn, forward the group's findings to CNO for

evaluation.This .
a group will continue to function in an advisory capacity, conducting
periodic surveys of the fleet commands and submitting their findings to CIN

reorganization of the Naval Reserve.

Under the command of Cdr. E.C. Combs of Miami, RTU-62 flew 253 hours training i its crews in
submarine surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. For the first time, a US. nuclear submarinewas
provided for the unit's training missions.
In addition to flight training,over 500 manhours were devoted to ground training for maintenanceand i

flight crews.

APIA, Western Samoa-Here in this tropical l paradise, the most
run unusual of all the current,Universal Postal Union centenary stampswas
released this month.As .
> pictured below, the 50 sene item shows veteran seaman William
an Willis,who at age 70 made his second trip by raft from Callao,Peru to
the Samoan Islands.That's a distance of over 6,700 miles.Tacking on a
inne jaunt from Samoa to Australia, after completion of his second trip, Y
Willis's total journey was between 10 and 12 thousand miles ,
altogether.The .
ce first trip was completed on Oct. 14, 1954 when Willis was 61.
With 44 years then as a seaman,the New Yorker took 115 days to reach
- Samoa with a raft of seven balsa wood logs.The raft was named"Las
'IJ Siete Hermanitas" (the seven little sisters).On board with him were a 1w
cat and a parrot in a cage. Two days before he made Pago Pago, a
dolphin leaped aboard and its thrashing caused the parrot's cage to f1i-1i
burst open. The cat then killed the parrot.
Death was not very far for Willis on both the Samoa trips,for his raft
prey.was quite often circled by schools of sharks waiting and looking for

The second trip was completed to Samoa in November 1963. This r.
time his raft-4'Aged Unlimited"-was made of three steel pontoons
filled with plastic material to prevent sinking in case of leakage.This
raft cost $15,000, weighed five tons, and was designed by space r
engineers and veteran draftsmen. July 5, 1963 it was towed off the
Peruvian coast and cast adrift in the Humboldt Current.
When Willis arrived at Upolu,Western Samoa 130 days later,he was
so tired he had not realized that his radio was broken. .. .

Little did Willis realize that his feats of seamanship helped to underscore -
the archeological theories of Thor Heyerdahl who made "FLEET ANGEL" RETIRES--AFCM William J.Hobson Is piped over the side at HC- 2 after
similar journeys with his "Kon Tiki". All of these journeys helped completing 31 years of Naval Service. Master Chief Hobson spent the last four years as the "Fleet I

,, assigned officially to NARF JAX under the provisions of a recently
'.N!, ,i" restructured Naval Reserve concept designed to develop an effective
Navy-wide contingency support capability

t: NAVAIR Rework 208,commanded by Cdr.William Ellis,a professor
nuclear engineering at the University of Florida,is one ot five reserve
units aligned with rework facilities to meet mobilization requirementsof
the Naval Air Systems Command. Fringe benefits to the parent
w command will be generated by using the talents of the reservists for
---- c'r ; special projects and absorbing them in the workforce during individual *
r two-week active duty training cycles.

The Naval Air Systems Command announced the alignment of 22
