The conference was held in response to a recent announcement by the office of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), regarding intentions to develop a career plan for Navy Women comparable to that for men. x of broad cross section of Navy The advisory group is composed a personnel, '1--N male and female, enlisted and officers, primarily from the Norfolk area. Also i in attendance were representatives from the Bureau of Naval Personnel in I :o Washington, D.C. and the Recruit Training Center for Women at Orlando, Fla s Rear Admiral J.C. Sheppard, Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics Readinessat CINCLANTFLT, addressed the conference, stating the Navy's intent to work toward equality for women. The main objective of the conference was to identify problems pertaining to assignments, career development and retention for women in the Navy and recommend solutions to at least 10 of these. With 44 years then as a seaman,the New Yorker took 115 days to reach - Samoa with a raft of seven balsa wood logs.The raft was named"Las 'IJ Siete Hermanitas" (the seven little sisters).On board with him were a 1w cat and a parrot in a cage. Two days before he made Pago Pago, a dolphin leaped aboard and its thrashing caused the parrot's cage to f1i-1i burst open. The cat then killed the parrot. Death was not very far for Willis on both the Samoa trips,for his raft prey.was quite often circled by schools of sharks waiting and looking for The second trip was completed to Samoa in November 1963. This r. time his raft-4'Aged Unlimited"-was made of three steel pontoons filled with plastic material to prevent sinking in case of leakage.This raft cost $15,000, weighed five tons, and was designed by space r engineers and veteran draftsmen. July 5, 1963 it was towed off the Peruvian coast and cast adrift in the Humboldt Current. When Willis arrived at Upolu,Western Samoa 130 days later,he was so tired he had not realized that his radio was broken. .. . -- ----- - Little did Willis realize that his feats of seamanship helped to underscore - the archeological theories of Thor Heyerdahl who made "FLEET ANGEL" RETIRES--AFCM William J.Hobson Is piped over the side at HC- 2 after similar journeys with his "Kon Tiki". All of these journeys helped completing 31 years of Naval Service.
