I. L STAMP CIRCLES

By Albert B.Close
ANCON, Canal Zone-In this tropical townsite of the federal
reservation called the Panama Canal Zone lives a lady who has made ., : ,\ ( "
postage stamps an important part of her life. ,,'. ;, ..r.;..! .. .
Her name is Sister Gertrude Marie Shaughnessey of the Maryknoll ',. ". ; #: i. ,.. />
-
Sisters Like most of her fellow workers,Sister Gertrude is a teacher, ,
but she also has a mission for the poor which is supported by selling (.!, '." '.','"', .:. ',
used postage stamps given as donations. '.
Every Saturday morning by an entrance to the Maryknoll Sisters'
\ ConventSister Gertrude can be seen passing out clothes, food and .....
,\ ,/ medicines to the dozens of familes which come for help.At .
Christmas time, she does special gift buying and packaging for
the patients of Palo Seco Hospital for lepers. This involves many visits
for size-taking and individual taste noting.
Gorgas Hospital's halls are familiar paths for SiSter Gertrude, too, _
as she visits the ill in general, and does special work with terminal
illnesses. She has made a study of this area and, even with her own e
advanced years, comforts those in their last hours and offers practical yhm
help to the family concerned. : 1F
Many sons and daughters of U.S. Armed Forces personnel in the
Canal Zone know Sister Gertrude from the catechism classes she
k
teaches at Howard Air Force Base and Fort Kobbe.
Another area of her attention is the aged U.S. citizens who live in
Panama City, retired on minimal incomes, or forgotten by time and
faraway relatives. Sister Gertrude knows many of them and brings
them information, games, jokes and financial help when necessary.
This writer knows of no other person who puts postage stamps to as -
good a purpose as does Sister Gertrude. She accepts used stamps from I
any country.
If you have any unneeded used stamps tucked away in an envelopein ... .
your desk or at home, won't you mail them to Sister Gertrude -

.. HS-3 back from deploymentJaxThe

"Tridents" of HS-3 returned here yesterday after a six-month
deployment to the Mediterranean on board the USS Forrestal. The .
cruise saw the squadron"Mod Squad"accumulate over 1200 accident free
hours in their Sikorsky SH-3D's, while providing Antisubmarine Warfare
protection, plane guard and search and rescue services, and general utility
support for the Forrestal and other Sixth Fleet units.
While accomplishing this, the squadron maintained a 99.9 percent sortie rate
through the ever diligent efforts of maintenance personnel who consistently
performed well beyond all expectations. Their three 30-day line periods accounted -
a
for a large portion of the 131 days the "Tridents" were at sea during the

deployment.They .
participated in Operation Umpires Decision, and also spent most of July
and August providing support for the evacuation of United States Nationals from
Cyprus during the Summer conflict. HS-3 also took part in many other exercises,
including Dawn Patrol, International Week II and Operation Poop Deck.
Interspersed with these exercises were port visits to Cannes, France; Palma,

Spain, Athens and Corfu, Greece; and Naples, Italy.
Many individual contributions made the cruise a success. Twenty-five pilots
I and aircrewmen were awarded the Sikorsky Winged "S" for life saving rescuesin
the SH-3D. Rescues and relief operations included the rescue of three Air Wing

r pilots, one from a downed A-7E and two from an RA-5C; two men overboard, one
from the Forrestal and one from the USS Patterson (DE 1061)); five emergency
Medevacs; assisting two foreign merchants and one sailboat in distress.

HS-3's skipper is LCdr. Frederick C. Brockhausen, Jr.

R Z I 4 A Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a bulletin warning

motorists against the risk of injury in using B.F. Goodrich "Space

"
2 Describing the hazard as a possible "explosive separation of tire

said it has received 16 user-reports of serious injuries-two of them

1 t.' II i 4 fatalsustained when the tires exploded and separated from the

w "Space Savers" are easily recognized by their greatly reduced

diameter and uninflated state-though mounted on the spare rim-

-i when stored in the vehicle as a spare tire. Users are supplied with a

special, pressurized cannister to inflate the tire. .

j In all but one of the serious injuries reported to NHTSA, the victim

L was the person inflating the tire.

The Space Saver was standard spare tire equipment on the following

recipe this week. We won't though as we have a very, nice recipe for ..
banana bread submitted by Mrs. Florence Anders: of the Navy Disease
Vector Ecology and Control Center.
BANANA BREAD
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 4 cups plain flour
1 cup shortening. oleo or butter 2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla
4 eggs 112 cup chopped pecans
6 ripe bananas (mashed) (use more if desired)

Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs one at a time and mix well. { k
Slowly add flour and baking soda, mixing well. Add bananas a small
amount at a time until throughly mixed. Add vanilla and nuts and mix
until well blended.
Bake in lined pan for 45 minutes at 350 degrees Test with toothpick and
bake longer if necessary. If loaf pans are used cooking time may be
reduced to 30-40 minutes. A "SHORT" FAREWELL-Dwarfed by Jacksonville's Mayor, Hans Tanzler, VP-5 Public Affairs
desired.cake may be frosted with your favorite frosting. Officer, Ltg(| ) Fred Stegner, acting as a representative for the "Mad Foxes", receives an official
'Good-bye and good luck,'from the Mayor and the City of Jacksonville. The"Mad Foxes"depart for

background on what went on and the promises that were made. Please read carefully:

PROMISE: "NAGE will furnish you an attorney to represent you in grievances".

fact, when NAGE refused to represent several employees, an Unfair Labor
