Jax--Smith and Jones know how it feels to play long shot and win. 9 Ii

James A. "Snuffy" Smith and Bernard Jones were on the job at NARF when
they received their notices of selection to the prestigious government intern
program. Only 30 percent of intern appointees are selected under the merit H:1

promotion, while 70 percent come from college campuses and competitive t 'i

examination rolls. I
.
_ In exchange for a declaration of mobility and three years of satisfactory ;. P
performance, the two young men are assured of advancement from their
present GS-7 grade level to that of GS-12 i in approximately 36 months.

The intern program, which covers a variety of disciplines, is the government's
in-house producer of highly trained, highly qualified candidates destined to step Y ,
into job vacancies created by retirement of veteran employees. wM.. 1

Involved in a comprehensive, high level three year training program em-
bracing their particular specialty, the best of the current crop of interns will be'
slated for top government jobs in a 1980 timeframe, according to Larry Webb,
Director of the Logistics Intern Development Center in Mechanicsburg, Pat

qualified candidates required to fill critical government positions vacated each
: year, Mr. Webb views the program as an excellent source of manpower supply,
as well as a top notch opportunity for those enrolled in the program. Normal ,
advancement for a GS-5 entering the program is four to six steps in three years; K.
I'a GS-7 should advance to the rate of GS-11 or GS-12 in the same period. i

From a logistics standpoint, Mr. Webb noted that the Navy is dealing with } + ,f
billions of dollars in assets each year, with control over tens of billions in in-
ventory. It is obvious that top managerial capability must be assured on a r"j
continuing basis. ON TO WASHINGTON to pursue his government career as a

Smith and Jones possess that enthusiasm. From a casual conversation with GUITAR PLAYERS
interns working at NARF, the two employees became interested in applying for
the program. Letters of application followed, as did phone calls and interviewsand STUDIO
requests for more information. After what seemed like months of waiting,
the notifications of selection came. Jones left almost immediately for the Naval ,
