New ethnic codes



for personnel filesCHINFO


BUPERS has announced that the system of identifyingan
individual's race in the master personnel data files has been expanded .
by identifying 12 ethnic codes to be used in combination with

the existing racial codes.
The information is used solely to determine that the various
4 minority groups are being afforded equal opportunity within the Navy
being asked to designate themselves as a
& Navypeopleare member of

D one of the folloWIng ethnic groups: Spanish descent, American Indian
Asian American Puerto Rican, Filipino, Mexican American, Eskimo,'
Aleut, Cuban American, Chinese Japanese, Korean, "Other", or
1IwtttI "None". Personnel whose ethnic group is not included in the 12 groups
I -- will be classified as "Other". Individuals who do not choose to selectan
ethnic group will be classified as "None".
A The classification by ethnic groups is entirely voluntary reports
BUPERS, and is based on a personal interview with the individual.
e Formerly, racial classifications were only broken down into five
R groups. These five groups Caucasian, Negro, Mongolian, Indian and
Malayan will still be used, along with the new ethnic codes, to monitor
equal opportunity programs in the Navy.
The expansion of categories meets the requirements of DoD that
each service be able to better monitor the opportunities afforded its

home after having visited Disney World and the Ken-

nedy Space Center.
While in the area they were given a guided bus tour of
