STOMP CIRCLES

By Albert E.Close
Jax-To digress this week from the usual stamp fare, I would like to
.
Those are the early jazz dance
S / S write about "stomps. forms which
made famous such musical giants as Joe "King" Oliver, Jelly foil
Morton and Fletcher Henderson. They're wearing new clothes in
Dd today's Rock and Roll bands. i
Accompanying this article are photos of three Netherlands Antilles
stamps of the past year which exemplify that area's salute to Youth i
Rock music and what their generation's message is all about. !
Every generation Youth is in some form of rebellion. Sometimes .
this is beneficial; sometimes it's not; but if it weren't for such young t
musical rebels as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Benny
Goodman-who in their youth rebelled against old traditions and
1 / started new ones-American music would be much poorer in quality

and originality.It .
person ii ist is significant that Louis and Duke, while living, were commemorated -
ary ; e S on many postage stamps issued by the newly independent .
nations of Africa: Chad, Mali and Togo, for instance.
1 enl of pv far *jedlis Other jazz greats have been similarly honored: Sidney Bechet, the '

.:. '' .'" /: .'. "' -... v-.-.' .- -..' v".f New Orleans clarinetist and soprano saxophonist; pianist Errol .
, Garner, vocalist-pianist Nat King Cole; and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.
/ I / This should be of great pride to all Americans, because these 1'

-'
V* : ;-1'1.!: --XV'i y. : ,7'-v: ; 'j- musicians developed, and in most cases thrived, in our country and t

/ I. / / / culture. Their music is truly American, just as the Rock music of 1\'
today is American.
There are musicians of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's
caliber among today's generation of Rock musicians, but, as usual,it .
isn't easy to find them because the commercial music world tends to '{
disguise or hide them in deceptive stage or vaudvillian type trappings. :

Wmt an automatic postage Nevertheless stamps.,they are there, and one day they too will be shown on

HC-2 Del 66 heading homeJax

-- HC-2 Det 66 will return home Saturday after a highly successful 11-month
.
operational period aboard the USS America.
Headed by LCdr. R. W. "Woody" Knight, the detachment flew over 1,860 ac
cident-free hours providing plane guard, search and rescue services and general
utility support for the ships and Naval units involved in training exercises in the
r! Atlantic and Caribbean and during a six-month deployment with the 6th Fleet in
the Mediterranean.
During this prolonged period, the detachment conducted numerous search and
1 rescue evolutions which resulted in 12 at-sea rescues involving both civilian and

Navy personnel.Of .
particular note was the assistance provided to the stricken schooner HarryB.
Adams off the east coast of Florida on Nov. 1, 1973. As the first rescue unit on
the scene, a Det 66 helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer to the flounderingvessel
to check its situation for the on-scene commander.
Three teen-aged crewmembers were subsequently evacuated by the chopper
while another Del 66 aircraft flew in emergency pumps for the schooner's
remaining crew.
Another rescue involved seven crewmembers of an EA-3B which ditched off
the America on March 8. Due primarily to the skill of the rescue swimmer and
precise crew coordination, the victims were hoisted from the cold water and
safely enroute to awaiting medical aid aboard the ship within ten minutes of the
1tl ditching.In .
its utility support mission, Det 66 provided a multitude of services to the
America, other Navy units and to Naval units of other NATO countries.
The largest single transport effort was made during a visit to Fort Lau-
derdale when, due to cancellation of boating, the detachment was tasked with
transporting 125 civilian visitors aboard America ashore and most of the 2,500

ii i ii During the deployment, the detachment also flew several medical evacuation

i 3 3I 1 missions, two of which involved 300 mile round trip.night flights with critical

i patients.

i Overall, 4900 passengers, 35 pounds of mail and 68 tons of cargo were trans-
