Navy helps disadvantaged youth Q..,

Jax-- Breakthrough, a Navy domestic action program carried out by
the Chief of
Naval Reserve, has gone into effect this summer in five U.S. cities,
including Jacksonville.Breakthrough .f

!! with is a day camp program designed to provide disadvantaged 6tywwrt i z.
youth
learning and recreation experiences. The plan is for the Navy to

develop the program, operate it for, a summer, then to interest the city in
assuming the leadership and operation for ensuing years.

The local program, under the coordination of Cdr. L. Del Plato, began June 24,
with a visit to NAS Jax. Since then, about 250 children from the Jacksonville area

have been the guests of the Navy. They've enjoyed such things as tours through T

ships and airplanes, picnics, crash truck rides and a full day at St. Augustine. .

Each child is given a bag lunch, a Breakthrough T-Shirt, and hopefully a

donated white hat.So far the only large white hat donation has been by the Naval

Drug Rehabilitation Center, under Capt. W. Moore. The request for white hats is

still being made and they can be taken to Bldg.411 or call 772-2684.

Jax-Our biggest current day concern-Energy Conservation-will be k, d e
highlighted on a U.S. 10-cent< commemorative to be issued Sept. 23.
The first day of issue will be in Detroit,Mich during the World Energy c
Conference there. F L
The Conservation features the '
Energy stamp words "Energy _
Conservation" in a blocked free form style which is common to tii
modern poster art. The letters are seemingly cluttered and out of
proportion, but their aim apparently is to catch the eye and hold it.The
latter is not an uncommon goal in art or design. ,

The key words are superimposed upon bright sunlight. In the lower
right hand corner appear the words "United States lOc". In the lower a +
left hand corner appear molecules,a drop of gasoline. and a drop of oil,
symbolizing various forms of energy.
This new stamp was designed by Robert W, Bode of Chappagua,
N.Y. He was the designer of the Johnny Appleseed (1966)) and Davy
Crockett (1967) stamps in the American FolkloreSeries., As an artistin ,- I t
